Complained about not getting the UHD channels when new customers on ultimate oomph get them.

Received a call yesterday said they couldn't add them for free to my package but managed to recontract me for 18 months on ultimate oomph with UHD for £96 which is £9 less than I was paying before so happy with the win

Can't add UHD for nothing but effectively add UHD for -£9 the world has gone mad!

The only thing they have gained is tying you into a new 18 month contract - you might have kept virgin for that long anyway.

Area 20 is a billing reference. They cover multiple geographic areas, so any pilot updates will always be smaller than the billing regions.

Only option for broadband for me as BT can only give me 6 to 8mb and have no plans for fibre in my area at present.

Having 2 kids who are online gaming a fast stable BB connection is what we need

BBC 3 is going back to the same spot and same times - it's going to be sharing channel space with CBeebies which will reduce it's hours to accommodate BBC 3

It's been there for a year or two. Or are you meaning a streaming version?

They are going to have to add more content either way, there are only 5 shows listed on it on My5 right now!

I agree, but it seems that all hope of SA coming to VM is now lost. Virgin is not willing to add Now to the apps as BT and Talk Talk have done either, which is understandable, although they could have done this by tying it in with the need for customers to have the Sky channels in their package in order to access it. But there is no real advantage for Virgin viewers in that because I dare say Sky would not permit integration, which means we couldn’t search for SA programmes on the V6.

The channel may be wound up anyway at the end of Sky’s contract with HBO.

Very unlikely considering they also show SKY originals, Showtime and Starz content on there amongst others.
SKY are planning to seriously invest in original content, and by serious we're talking big money.

As LK2K states, this seems unlikely - HBO programming has been farmed out across multiple channel brands so it is not completely reliant on that output and remember it is a pan-European brand for Sky's high end drama output especially as they increase their content budget and fill their Sky Studios pipeline with new shows.

HBO's deal gives them a clear runway and a buffer to build that pipeline and it's shows like Hausen, Das Boot, Domina and Django that really suggest the future of Sky Atlantic as the primary home for high end drama ordered by Sky Studios, made across the UK/IE, Germany and Italy but serving all of those territories.

I’m sure you are right, but the name ‘Atlantic’ would no longer be appropriate.

To be honest, they could put all the Sky Studios stuff on Sky One and drop some of the dross. That would make it a pretty good channel.

Well I wouldn't imagine there would be a total loss of US programming - I would imagine there would still be acquisitions, co-productions, other possible output partners and (most likely) closer integration with NBCUniversal - plus the name is fairly distinctive among their portfolio so why drop it?

Aye they really should. a lot of companies keep a ton of channels open which could be condensed a great deal.

i know this is controversial but i always thought getting rid of BBC3 and keeping BBC2 and BBC4 was slightly redundant since they were aimed at the same at the same audience and had such similar shows.

I wouldn't say similar shows, but they basically moved several genres of shows off BBC2 to create BBC4 back in the day. My BBC2 watching reduced dramatically after BBC4 became available.

I think there's some non-UK/US content on Atlantic at the moment isn't there? Like Radio Times it's a strong brand which I'm sure will outlive its original framing.

As long as Sky makes money from having Sky One and Sky Atlantic then I see no reason for it to drop one of these channels. As others have noted, the cost of running an extra channel is marginal if you already have rights to the content. And how many people might ask why their subscriptions are rising this month if the number of Sky channels is being reduced?

Absolutely - they’ve had shows which have originated from Australia like Upright and don’t forget some of Sky’s biggest critical and cultural hits have come from Italy and Germany like Gomorrah, The Young Pope, Das Boot and Babylon Berlin... I don’t think the name of the channel is as literal as it may have been back in 2011.

iPlayer for TVs is getting an update. There's no indication of the platform update schedule, but I've checked my V6 and the changes aren't implemented on it yet.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/internet...e-2966cf499ae2

The changes are mainly to do with playback controls and subtitles. Button changes and more flexibility for sizing basically.

It said 'Not authorised' in the same way that RTE Radio did three years ago when there was a software fault.

It seems to have righted itself upon checking this morning, I had wondered if VM had blocked Sky Comedy as they felt it innappropriate to show this during a period of national mourning, but then found that Sky Documentaries was blocked too!

It would be up to the channels themselves what they show or don't show, not the platforms they're on.

Yeah but I thought that VM might have taken it upon itself to not show material on it's platform that may cause laughter in the current circumstances, even though Sky had decided not to pull the channel.

It would be interesting to know if a carriage agreement means that those who pay for channels have to show them once they've paid for them??

Under agreements carriers are not allowed to block channels without exceptional reaso..

RichardCoulter 10-04-2021 16:52

Re: Changes to Virgin TV (2021)

Thanks. It would obviously be pointless, but I wasn't sure if a platform could buy the right to broadcast a channel & not do so when I was trying to work out why Sky Comedy was blocked.

It makes sense that it would be in the contract that they have to show a channel that they've bought the rights for as this would help the channel owner to increase ad revenue.

I've only ever known this happen on Freeview where one of the 'text n tits' type channels finished broadcasting for the night. An error meant that a frozen picture of a woman's breasts carried on being broadcast, prompting complaints from people when children started channel surfing later on that morning.

The channel couldn't be contacted to remedy the situation, so in the end Arqiva had to be contacted to cut the feed.

OLD BOY 10-04-2021 20:17

Yes, but I expect the channel was breaching its contract in allowing that picture to be displayed outside its broadcasting hours.

I agree, I don’t see how Richard can see the two situations as comparable.

If someone in the supply chain is aware that a channel is broadcasting 18 or 15 rated content out of hours (inadvertently or otherwise) then I’d expect them to take reasonable steps to pull the plug. I’m sure OFCOM would take the same view.

The extent to which these processes are automated would be a reasonable defence for operators.

I really like 360 and even my wife prefers it to the TiVo software
All4 is missing but a lot of the content is available via on demand anyway.

My5 has just arrived recently

If you have 2 boxes with harddrive it works a lot better than the TiVo system (subject to a strong connection)

HD channels are swapped out if your package has them in it and the SD channel removed so the EPG is less cluttered with duplicates.

Yes there are a few features that TiVo has that 360 doesn’t but it’s a lot more slick and smoother.

Re: Changes to Virgin TV (2021)

There is a warning on the app before you trigger the upgrade that says that recordings and series links will be deleted. I'm pretty sure it's also in the instructions that come with remotes too:

https://www.virginmedia.com/help/vir...box-to-360-box
Quote:

  1. Please read these instructions first – keep the remote(s) in the box for now
  2. Watch any recorded shows before you upgrade (we can’t transfer them, and you deserve a duvet day). Just bear in mind your service will automatically update 5 days after this package arrived
  3. Start your upgrade by selecting upgrade to Virgin TV 360 from your Home screen - you will find the 360 App on the Home screen but you can also find within the Apps & Games folder.
  4. Follow the steps with your existing V6 remote until you’re asked to swap. Need a verification code? Enter: 847446
  5. Make sure you have the latest version of Virgin TV Go on your phone or tablet – just head to your app store

I was notified of this on numerous occasions throughout the process

As part of the sign up for 360 online

With the remote controls in the box

Even during the process there was a warning that ALL recordings and settings would be deleted, it gave an option to cancel at that point.

Someone has clearly given you the wrong info.

Unfortunately, you've found out the hard way not to believe anything that you're told on the phone by VM. Sometimes it's through lack of knowledge and, in my opinion, sometimes it's blatant lies to get a sale or extend a contract. The internet is full of similar complaints about this sort of thing.

No, quite the opposite. The 4.31 update has broken the on-screen guide on both my 360 boxes (formerly V6 boxes). The guide of the shared profile is unaffected but the guide of my personal profile is broken. Before in the guide, I could tap in a channel number and that page of the guide would display. Now, whatever channel number I tap in I am taken to the final channel listed. Same with voice command, it goes straight to the end of the list whatever I say. Now the only way to navigate my profile guide is with the up/down buttons. A re-boot did not cure this. It must be a bug - a very annoying bug.

How annoying.

Just one thought occurs to me. When you first set up the 360, it takes you to the bottom of the menu in the TV Guide because there is an introduction to the software there. I don't suppose they've added something there that they want you to view? If so, view it and then the channels should behave as they did before.

That's not the case. The last channel on my personal profile list is BBC One SD and that's only there because the London regional news is unavailable on BBC One HD. It's annoying to have to do this but when I can find some time I plan to create a new profile and see if this behaves normally.

Virgin Media is turning into an joke it Telewest aka ConWest is all but name all Virgin care about is your money.

Also as of April 13th ITVBe +1 is only on Virgin Media (Channels 120/162).

Blue means Not in Scotland.

The Sky UHD service has launched among other services.

Quality over quantity should be better, as they can launch loads of new channels with low quality content it is a waste of time and money.

Virgin Media is a business and if you don't feel you are getting value for money, vote with your feet and leave.

There have been huge devlopments over the last year MB, it's just not on the broadcasting front. Although I would never rule out new channels, I would expect to see a grdaul decline of channels from now on. The best we can hope for is some SD channels get the HD treatment like the Sony one.

It’s the end of the era of new channels, MB. You should open a new thread to keep yourself busy - ‘Going soon from Virgin Media’.

Fewer channels and more streamers is what you have to look forward to now. You heard it here first! ©

During a pandemic with an impact on the global economy it's hardly a surprise that new channels aren't popping up all over the place. The best you can hope for is GB News and it remains to be seen whether or not that will appeal to a significant amount of viewers.

Sky Atlantic is still the elephant in the room. With Sky using that for their own productions, they may wish to gain more exposure. Then again, they are well aware that Virgin Media viewers desperately seeking access to the channel will possibly have a Now subscription and may not wish to lose that source of income.

The state of the economy may make it more likely that consumers decide that they can't afford to subscribe to several different streamers. It's too early to make a realistic prediction.

We don't need new channels, there's enough absolute dross as there is, what we need is new content, as in new dramas, etc, but as others have said the reason for no new shows is definitely down to the pandemic imo.
