I've no information, but surely if a number of channels were to close on Freeview in two weeks time, at least some of them would be letting viewers know?

Wish I could remember how much notice there was when COM8 closed.

It was 12 days.

You did post a following when COM8 was closing:

The spectrum segment has to be cleared at the end of June.

If COM7 services as a whole were being pulled early (which they could be) then 3 months notice would have to be given to the broadcasters using the mux under the carriage agreement.

That mean if they has not got notice their will on March 30th (3 Months notice). Or April 7th (12 weeks notice).

Just pointing out that if the mux was being withdrawn earlier than June it would have been well publicised.

Due to Ofcom revokes RT’s UK licence today.

Interestingly the slate has the "local" branding, rather than Ideal World.

Given the happenings at IW recently I wouldn't even be surprised if it doesn't come back, the new owners cutting costs.

---------- Post added at 14:02 ---------- Previous post was at 13:43 ----------

I thought you meant it was a matter of hours. I just saw gianni on Digital Spy's post from this morning that says "the past 24 hours at least".

The cutting costs idea is looking more plausible now. The other channels on the local multiplex are working fine.

If IW Extra does disappear will the local mux reconfigure back to one less channel? Or find a replacement? I can't see the former happen.

---------- Post added at 14:08 ---------- Previous post was at 14:02 ----------

I wouldn't even be surprised if this was further fallout from the sale of Create & Craft, maybe the old IW owners sold the local mux transmission space too before the new IW owners took over, maybe Craft Extra will resurface on a different multiplex? It would explain why Craft Extra is still on the EPG, and the Back Soon EPG info on it (though I was expecting it to reappear on one of those midnight slots).

I think Freesports will go after Ideal World Extra slot - if it has stop broadcasting.

---------- Post added at 19:06 ---------- Previous post was at 18:51 ----------

Here is the up to date list of space on Freeview being unused.

24 hours slots:
-Old 5Select slot on COM4
-Old Create and Craft Extra slot on COM4
-Old RT slot on COM6
-Old Ideal World Extra slot on Local Mux

Part time slots:
-Smithsonian Channel slot on COM5 (11pm to 3am only)
-Together TV slot on COM5 (12am to 3am only)
-Ideal World slot on COM6 (12am to 7am only)
-Jewellery Maker/PBS slot on COM5 (5am to 8am only)

All information right as of March 19th.

All following Channels are set to close/or move to other streams on Freeview by June 2022.

SD:

-FreeSports
-Quest Red+1
-Now 80s
-More4+1
-PBS America+1
-That's TV (UK)
-Forces TV

HD:

-Quest HD
-BBC NEWS HD
-BBC FOUR HD
-CBeebies HD

Plus W and Talk TV is set to launch soon on Freeview.

So I think a following may happen (My own views):
-FreeSports will move to Local Mux
-W will launch on COM4 or reuse Drama +1 or Dave Ja Vu slot.
-TalkTV will launch on COM4
-NOW 80s will move to COM6
-Forces TV may move to COM4 if UKTV reuse sister channel (as listed on this post) slot to launch W.

I think That's TV will stay on Freeview but only on Channel 7/8 (Line up is the same as That's TV UK anyway.)

I think it safe to say the following is set to close on Freeview

-Quest Red+1
-More4+1
-PBS America+1
-That's TV (UK)
-Forces TV - may happen up to what UKTV do.
-Quest HD
-BBC NEWS HD
-BBC FOUR HD
-CBeebies HD

I was thinking same re: FreeSports after I learned of Local mux happening today. I think they ceased FreeSat transmission to save the pennies for DTT, hoping some opportunity would present itself. I doubt the Local mux was on their radar, I think it's an opportunity that may have only just presented itself, assuming it's not really technical difficulties (I doubt it is, I just don't think there was an appropriate slate available).

UKTV have a history of replacing +1s with new FTA launches, so W will replace Dave Ja Vu since it's most prominent and its demographic is more likely to use On-demand rather than a +1.

That's TV UK is on one of the Freeview IP portal services I seem to recall, so it will still be available on Smart TVs, not just Local Mux variant.

I'm not sure if Forces TV will make the transition after closure, they may move onto an IP Portal.

I wouldn't be surprised is Now Music took the remainder of the Ideal World slot overnight as it wouldn't suit many channels.

Apparently, when the mux that provides regionalisation for the PSB's has been rebuilt, it"s believed that there will be room for an extra HD channel. It's thought that this will be used for BBC News or BBC4. BBC4 would be better (unless they have plans to close it now with the new TVL freeze), as BBC News is available in HD for much of the time anyway when it simulcasts with BBC1 & BBC2.

Freesports initially said that they wouldn't be joining Freeview because it was too expensive, but then the much cheaper temporary Com muxes became available. Unless they have now become really successful, I can't see them being able to afford a 'proper' slot that's available.

If it could go onto all the local muxes, this would broadly be the same number of potential viewers as Com 7.

If it has to come off Freeview, I wonder if it might return to Freesat to help to replace their lost viewers (especially now that Freesat has a new charging structure)??

The other option is for them to remain on Freeview via streaming, but I imagine that a lot of people don't bother with this option for various reasons. It will help now that streaming channels are allowed to have their own EPG slot.

What I find a little bizarre when most people on various forums talk about this is they always only mention BBC4, and ,more recently, almost always mention its possible closure. And yet they never mention CBeebies HD which BBC4 HD shares with. CBeebies is a significant ratings winner for the BBC, extremely highly regarded, and often outrates BBC4. And it's extremely important that the BBC keep catering for the youngest of demographics.

Many channels have went on Freeview without being successful beforehand. Freeview is the biggest platform by far, so just being on a main mux can be enough to give a significant boost to keep them there once on it. As they say, you have to spend money to make money.

All the Local muxes carry the same channels except for the Local channel itself. So it's either on all the Local muxes or none. (I'm not counting the NI and Manchester muxes as Local muxes, those are different beasts.)

COM7 even with its limited geographic coverage and DVB-T2 only tuner availability probably still is on significantly more screens than via Freesat boxes. If it can't find a way to stay on DTT I have no doubt it'll return to Freesat, but I think it came off mainly to save money to fund future options on DTT, with a "wait and see approach" to see what possibilities may crop up as they wait for COM7's inevitable closure.

Streaming channels have been allowed their own EPG slot for years in the Ch260-upwards range. Most of the streaming services on Freeview are presented as part of a portal partner rather than individual channel numbers, but there has been an option of an individual listing for some time even if few have chosen to do so. Current examples of streamed channels with EPG slots that aren't part of portals are Sonlife Ch 263 and Arise News Ch 269. Most Freeview streamed channels clearly prefer the portal route, I'm guessing as it's cheaper to pay a partner (i.e. the portal operator) than paying for the individual EPG slot.

The change that happened amongst the recent(ish) consultation was that broadcasters with a Freeview Play app will be able to add IP-only channels to the Freeview channel list between Ch300 and Ch599.

It's not clear to me what this gives over what is currently available via the Ch260-range streamed channels. My only guess is that broadcasters can bulk-add channels they already stream via their own apps, and this would work out cheaper and more convenient.

Makes sense. I can see a situation where channels are either FTA or sold directly as part of a streaming pack. The UKTV channels aren't strong enough to be a stand-alone streaming service themselves so logic dictates they go FTA.

Yeah, I agree. That's what I was thinking.

Suspect the gifted slot for Together TV was looking exceedingly generous with COM7 closing soon.

Early on I did think of Adult Xpanded TV moving to Local Mux to timeshare with Together TV - but then I think no Adult channel can broadcast on Local Mux.

Then the wee bit later I did think a extra slot maybe added to Local mux for Drama +1

I thought that too at first, but I quickly thought otherwise as it's not a "can it", more a why would Xpanded want to when there's multiple alternative late/early slots.

There's no space for more streams on the Local mux I've read multiple times recently. The Great! family of channels on the Local mux all got their picture resolution dropped when the stream for Ideal Extra was added. Comux would've added another stream at the same time if it was viable. When SDN/COM4 added the 17th and 18th streams they were clearly prepared for at the same time as they were added within 2 months of each other.

Was it really needed to post this again? It's the 3rd post and it's not even happened. Most it needs is twice, once before it happens, once after.

But if I was UKTV I would have launch Dave Ja Vu on UKTV's new Freeview slot and give Dave Ja Vu Channel 60 from Tomorrow. Keep Drama +1 on Channel 74.

Older demographics are more likely to use +1s and Drama has an older demographic than Dave. Dave viewers are more likely to use On-Demand. That's probably their logic.

There was a gap on the old Together TV stream on COM5 that disappeared as Drama+1 is apparently 24hrs.

Xpanded moved from the 3am-7am Smithsonian Channel slot on COM5 to the Midnight to 7am gap on Ideal World's stream on COM6.

Smithsonian Channel Freeview EPG data at time of writing suggests it is retaining its 7am-3am hours though it could now go 24hrs now Xpanded has moved. Smithsonian Channel is 24hrs on other platforms.

Xpanded2 wasn't on the same multiplex as Xpanded. It shared with Great! Movies Action on COM4 and closed in mid December. https://rxtvinfo.com/freeview-updates

BARB website unfortunately stopped providing new Channel Share Ratings from 3rd January but Great! TV (0.17), Great! Movies Classic (0.26) and Tiny Pop (0.13 unusual as normally in 0.20 range) were all individually getting at least double/triple the ratings of each of Now80s (0.07), ForcesTV (0.04) & FreeSports (0.06) I think Narrative Entertainment UK's (who own Great! And Pop channels) output has got much more justification to remain where they are.
TogetherTV(0.05) BTW.

BARB website was still providing free Top 10s for individual channels, but I've always found channel share more useful as it covers entire output as, for example, two channels could have similar ratings for their Top10 broadcasts but the rest of the time have wildly different ratings.

If only PSB2 multiplex would update it multiplex to be like COM4 to COM6.

That would make space for up to SIX SD Channels to move over from COM7 or launch.

It doesn't change that it was a broadcast channel on COM4. The IP stream on Freeview was launched 2 weeks before the broadcast version was removed.

I know you were. I was simply saying it's unlikely in my opinion, in a roundabout fashion. I would like FreeSports on a permanent multiplex myself, but I'm trying to be realistic so I'm not disappointed.

*Shudder* For a lower picture resolution? No thanks. PSB2 is the only one at proper resolution now, even PSB1 was slightly tweaked down to fit in an extra stream, though nothing as drastic as the commercial multiplexes and barely noticeable.

I was expecting you to say you wished COM5 and COM6 were like COM4 again. It would be less obvious on those two as there are lower resolution streams all 3 permanent commercial multiplexes. Though obviously there's differing numbers of radio stations on the commercial muxes to factor in possible future streams. They are all unique in their makeup.

Television licences renewed in March 2022:

Ofcom has granted a renewal of the following licences.

Licence type > Licensee > Service name
TV multiplex > Digital 3 and 4 Limited > Multiplex 2
TV multiplex > SDN Limited > Multiplex A

Hochanda Global Limited has a DTPS licence for:

Craft Extra

Ideal Shopping Direct Limited (Now called Ideal World Limited) has a DTPS licence for:

Ideal World

It may just be the way you've worded it, and my need for a coffee, so I'll ask... there's no DTPS for existing Ideal World then? It's just that you mentioned all the services associated with Hochanda and only one with IW.

Thanks for the info though, particularly the D3&4 mux part.

No worries, easy done. I've never liked the layout of the OFCOM website, particularly the License related stuff.

6,7,13 & 15 wouldn't even make any usable space, they are placeholders.

And the broadcasters are businesses, they've paid for the space, it's up to them to decide how to utilise it.

The current main sport headlines, national sport headlines (Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and football headlines will continue. All other sport headlines will be removed. We will also introduce a new England headlines section so you can stay updated on English sport news. These changes will take place over Spring 2022.

Real-time fixtures, results and tables data for Cricket, Football, F1, Golf, Horse Racing, Rugby Union, Rugby League and Tennis will continue and are not affected.

More sport headlines can be found on the BBC Sport website and the BBC Sport mobile app.

Do anyone else think it time for +1 channels to close on Freeview to make room for more channels to launch? (UK Wide only)

1) ITV +1/STV +1 & UTV +1
2) Channel 4+1
3) Channel 5 +1
4) ITV2 +1
5) ITV3 +1
6) ITV4 +1
7) ITVBe +1
8) Quest +1
9) E4 +1
10) Film4 +1
11) Dave ja vu
12) Drama +1
13) Yesterday +1
14) GREAT! movies +1
15) Blaze +1

Most of them should close as they take up valuable space although the +1 channels for the main channels, such as ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, should stay.

Been thinking over Easter Weekend I think it safe to say Dave Ja Vu and Drama +1 will both be axe on Freeview when UKTV launch Alibi and GOLD on Freeview.

Information was given to me March 21st.

If they do move those two to FTA I can't see obvious ways to get significantly better channel numbers on DTT. ITV are clearly up for deals with their +1s based on what happened with ITV4+1 placeholder recently, but those remaining placeholders they have are right next to Drama+1 at Ch60, so only the stream currently used by Dave Ja Vu would get a worthwhile move (from Ch 74), and even then they are pretty far from Yesterday on Ch27.

Due to COM7 closing I can see UKTV (BBC) giving up Yesterday +1 two hour slot.

Maybe they still have IP Fallback plans for the +1s, even after any making the remaining Pay portfolio FTA or closed.

Company directors home addresses are public information. Anyone can look them up at Companies House if they wish. You are not breaching any privacy by linking to information that is in the public domain so you really shouldn’t worry about linking to bankruptcy paperwork if you think it illustrates the point you’re making.

That can only mean they had a stake in the company. Even if they didn’t, if they’re being named in any sort of court document then that information is public domain and you really don’t need to be worrying about it.

I wonder if ITV are owed money for use of their channel overnight.

Again, a company is found to be owing Virgin a huge amount of money. It goes to show that Virgin are willing to let channels go into arrears. Sky are much less tolerant and channels are removed from the EPG if they get behind with their monthly payments.

If only they were as lenient with their domestic customers!

Yup. There are various ways around this that company directors can use, so they would have done this if they had any concerns about this being public knowledge.

The fees owed to VM cover transmission and the EPG slots. The fees owed to Sky are likely just for the EPG slots as they pay transmission fees to Astra.

Various changes taking place on 25th May. It's a mixture of closures and swaps. One is billed on Freeview website as a "name change" but it actually seems to be change of different sort, a channel turning into a IP Portal Service or a launch screen for the App of the same name.

The following is mostly a copy and paste of the link posted at the bottom.

"Channel Name Changes
Current Name / New Name / Channel Number

Pop Max becomes Pop Player 208

Channel Number Changes
Channel / Current Number / New Number

Horror

69 -->41

CBS Justice

Channel Closures

Kiss Chat and Date 252

Proud Dating 253

I assume Horror is more popular than CBS Justice so the company is just swapping the channels over to reflect this.

It specifically gives the lower channel number, so I don't think it is, but we'll see.

I agree about Pop Player thing being on SDN, all the other IP Portals and IP services are to my recollection.

The Pop Player App has been on Freeview for quite some time, possibly since Freeview Play launched, so I don't think this.

The Children's section of the Freeview EPG allows for a mix of broadcast and IP services, all other categories of channel, except Adult, have to be in the IP section.
------
I read something elsewhere were it was suggested that Pop Max becoming Pop Player on 208, rather than being a static information slate with a Red Button prompt to launch the App, or a IP Portal implementation similar to the App, as I had assumed.

And instead it might actually be a linear IP stream of Pop Max, rather than a still information slate, with a Red Button prompt to launch into Pop Player.

Craft Extra close on February 25th - the 12weeks rule was up on May 20th.

Also RT old slot on COM6 is still Free.

I know the 12 weeks rule is up, but since there is uncertainty as to what to do under the circumstances of this particular administration they probably think, in my opinion, that the safest thing to do legally is nothing, until the matter is resolved.

That the administrators told the creditors that they don't anticipate it having any value, suggests this is more complicated than there being demand for the broadcast space, as with COM7's closure there clearly will be demand for space.

Re: Freeview changes

Here is the up to date list of space on Freeview being unused.

24 hours slots:
-Old Create and Craft Extra slot on COM4
-Old RT slot on COM6
-Old Ideal World Extra slot on Local Mux

Part time slots:
-Smithsonian Channel slot on COM5 (3am to 7am only)
-Jewellery Maker/PBS slot on COM6 (5am to 8am only)

All information right as of May 31st.

All following Channels are set to close/or move to other streams on Freeview by July 2022.

SD:
*FreeSports
*Quest Red+1
*Now 80s
*More4+1
*PBS America+1
*That's TV (UK)
*Forces TV
*Together TV

HD:
*Quest HD
*BBC NEWS HD
*BBC FOUR HD
*CBeebies HD

So I think a following may happen (My own views):
*BBC NEWS HD may move to BBC B Mux
*BBC FOUR HD may move to BBC B Mux
*CBeebies HD may move to BBC B Mux
*NOW 80s may move to COM6
*Forces TV may move to COM4
*FreeSports may move to LTV Mux
*Together TV will be moving to IPTV

I think That's TV UK will stay on Freeview but only via IPTV (Line up is the same as That's TV Local anyway.)

I think it safe to say the following is set to close on Freeview:

Quest Red+1
More4+1
PBS America+1
That's TV (UK)
Quest HD

What’s changing on June 30th:

Mux closes
COM7 will close today

All information is right as of May 31st.
