They changed the Sky1 Twitter account to SkyTV about a month or two ago. They seem to have abandoned the other Twitter accounts and are consolidating all the TV ones on one account. So I wouldn't read into it too much, they'll be doing the same on each Social Media platform.

Sky Arts looks like it will be set to become a free to air service and join Freeview according to Broadcast.
They are seeking capacity but if this is unsuccessful it may replace Pick or Challenge.

LATEST: Media Boy HQ gets updates from Media Boy Sources.

Look like that SYFY has been saved from the axe going forward BUT we have seen uncofirmed reports by Media Boy Sources that Sky is set to change from SYFY to Sky Syfy.

However our sources think Nat Geo and Nat Geo Wild may close in future.

Media Boy HQ now thinks that the following may happen:

-Pick TV and Blaze will become one called Pick TV
-Blaze slot on Freeview will be reuse for Sky Arts to launch on Freeview

Their viewing figures aren't amazing, last time I looked, NGWild in particular, so it's quite possible they may close. They are still actively advertising new series launches so it may not happen for a while.

National Geographic channels are now part of Disney and their content is apparently on the new Disney+ service, so they may decide to go exclusively via that and cut the costs of running linear channels.

Of course you have left out my caveat "if you hold the content already".

It's observably the case that the cost of broadcasting a liner channel is tiny given how many channels there are in the Virgin EPG, free to air on satellite, etc. many of which broadcast to virtually zero viewers.

https://cineuropa.org/en/newsdetail/307002/

While the article is from 2016 - Europe doesn't have over 5000 television channels because it's cost prohibitive to broadcast.

Why would your 'sources' think that? There are no signs of Disney wishing to close either channel.

Well, it's the only thing that I can think of where Virgin were actually ahead. Think HD, UHD etc

I only put up with it because I get a massive discount (even taking into account that I have to subscribe to Now TV to gain access to Sky Atlantic). If the massive discounting ever stopped i'd be off like a shot!

It wasn't the return path that was the problem - the earliest Sky Digital boxes were modem enabled. It's the downstream (or relative lack thereof) that was the problem.

While cable could allocate bandwidth to you for an individual programme request satellite doesn't allow this.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2020)

Of course VOD proper did not come to cable until Next Gen TV came in with the digital boxes. On the analogue service you had NVOD, where you had to phone a number & "buy" a showing of a film. The recorded message then told you which channel number to view it on & at what time.

Cant remember if Sky had anything similar.

You are probably not that wrong, in my opinion.

Interestingly, we still don't seem to have the enhanced VOD offering from UKTV or Viacom yet either. I wonder when we can expect to get all that?

Maybe Virgin is planning to launch everything at once when the new Horizon 4 platform replaces the existing UI in the second half of this year. That would make for a great headline for VM.

Sky Sport, BT Sport scrap commercial subs
https://advanced-television.com/2020...cription-fees/

Sky Sports and BT Sport have stopped billing their commercial customers due to the coronavirus pandemic that has halted virtually all live sport around the globe.

Sky Sports suspended its fees this week and will not resume it “until a live sport schedule returns” and BT Sport similarly said that it will “suspend billing for pubs and clubs customers for a two week period,” and then presumably reassess.

“This is a goodwill gesture that we are putting in place while we monitor the situation,” read a statement from BT Sport. “We will keep customers updated as the situation develops.”

Simon Raggett, managing director of Sky Business, said: “We understand that these are challenging times for many of our Sky Business venues, who rely on showing live sport in a social environment to attract customers and revenue. Supporting these businesses and doing what we can to help them in uncertain times is very important to us. We would like to reassure our Sky Business venues […] we will not be charging them for their Sky Sports service until a live sport schedule returns.”

NP. A word of warning though, it's transpired that, even though Sky Sports can be paused, if it is, then people are losing discounts eg one person found that they were then paying full price for movies.

The BBC Sounds TV app will be rolling out from today on Virgin Media devices and YouView devices, including some Sony TVs, and is coming to some Samsung TVs later this week, plus many more connected TVs and devices in the coming weeks and months.

No? I don't think so either

On the negative side, we won't get Disney+

Sky has confirmed:

We’ve partnered with Disney to be the only pay-TV provider to offer Disney+ on their platform.

Great stuff, I paid for a year and hoped the app would be on V6 shortly after launch, thinking Disney would want to make it available as possible. Guess its Roku and Chromecast for me then.

I wouldn't take too much notice of that. As at today, the statement is correct because VM is still negotiating with Disney. There is nothing in Sky's agreement with Disney that prevents this from happening.

I'm sure it will launch soon, jobbie, be patient.

In the meantime yes, it's on Roku, Amazon Prime and Chromecast as well as some specified smart tvs and YouView.

I think the term "exclusive to SKY" might be a clue.

Where do they say it's exclusive?

Not in the press release that it is:

Yup, but still doesn't stay exclusive which most providers will use if it is that.

Yeah. Ever so slightly tempted to reboot the box to see if that brings it. But I'm so busy I wouldn't be using the app today, so I won't bother.

How is 'the only pay-TV provider' different to 'exclusive'?

It’s also available on various App stores for Smart TVs, so it’s not exclusive to Sky.

Maybe Sky will be the only one allowing you to add it to your existing TV bill?

I wonder if anyone noticed. It's just hours and hours of hysterical women having beefs about very little. Hopefully, the days of reality TV in the UK are declining now.

I don't think anyone is claiming that Disney+ is exclusive to Sky, just that Sky have confirmed that they have agreed a deal to be the only pay-TV provider to provide Disney+ on their platform.

I would be delighted if Virgin Media were to provide Disney+ but what Sky are saying suggests that won't happen.

What it suggests to me is that as now, it is true. It may not be true in a couple of weeks.

I don't see what this has to do with Sky Atlantic, Den. The arrival of Sky Atlantic on Virgin Media was never confirmed explicitly by Sky or VM. It always was speculation, sparked off by a Broadcast report which turned out to be far off the mark.

I am sure you don't deny the reports that Virgin are in talks with Disney + (they confirmed that they were, and that they have a long standing relationship with Disney) and of course Disney want their streamer on as many platforms as possible, as they themselves have said.

That Virgin haven't got it at launch is par for the course, but there is nothing to be gained by being negative about the prospect of it coming to VM.

I agree. If the Sky deal was an exclusive then I'm sure they would have sung it from the rooftops.

The only pay TV provider for now, who knows in the future. Whether thats tomorrow, next month or whenever

The article may have been amended, but that is certainly not what they say now.

Quote:

Virgin users can still sign up for Disney Plus for £59.99 for an annual subscription or £5.99 a month. The service will allow you to have access (on your TV if it’s compatible), but it won’t be integrated with your Virgin Media account.

You can use it on your phone on the go or separately on your Smart TV and other devices. Shows are downloadable to watch later on Android phones and tablets, iPhones, iPads and Amazon Fire Tablets. Downloads last for 30 days.
