Maybe Spiderplant or Ben can clarify this one for us.

I have seen on these forums that you're not happy with the Hub3s wifi, why have you not gone out and purchased a new router to solve your problem?

VM have provided a Wifi service that is adequate for most people but we can't really expect them to give everyone a free router costing £100s can we, it is probably the same for every ISP?

I cant really say that I agree with you, if VM provide a device, that they say has good wifi and it doesn't, then why should I have to fork out money to pay for a router that will give a better signal strength, the HUB3 should be doing this! I pay VM a lot of money every month so I expect them to come up with the services that I pay for.

But it does give good WiFi. My phone and two V6 boxes work no problem through WiFi. I appreciate that you don't think it has good WiFi because of your problems but is that down to your setup/type of house-walls/WiFi congestion with your neighbours.

No issues in my house so it provides 'good wifi' for me, so not everyone has issues with it, a separate router will always be the better option, you should seriously consider this as it will likely be the same with every ISP provided kit.

I don't know how the iPhone bars are calibrated, but -71dBm isn't a poor signal. It's about average. An iPhone connected to an SH3 at -71dBm will typically get a connection speed in the 150 to 200Mbps range. If you don't get those speeds, you've got a WiFi interference problem.

The V-HD will be phased out in the fairly near future, but not two months. As you're getting a manned installed, I suggest you explain to the installer that you want to keep the V-HD for now. I can't see him arguing.

I liked the VHD box, quick, uncomplicated and silent. Some customers just want to watch TV and aren't interested in apps, steaming etc. If VM provided a decent catch up service instead of running it down over the last few years, recording becomes irrelevant.

BenMcr 18-02-2018 09:35

Re: Free V6 box

The V box platform is also around 20 years old and isn't made anymore.

All current TV platforms include apps, streaming etc, so it would be more work to take them out than it is to leave them in.

Same as it's pretty impossible these days to buy a non Smart TV.

No one forces you to use the features you don't want.

The TiVo needs to be active and paid for on your account as well as connected both to the cable co-ax and Superhub.

Quick question if i may :)

We have 2 main V6 boxes in our house and also an old TIVO in our conservatory.

We don't pay anything for the TIVO (we used to have a V box in there and when we upgraded to V6's they put in one of our old TIVOs to replace the V box)

Would we be able now to swap the TIVO for a V6 for free?

Thanks :)

No. The free V6 does not apply if you already have a V6.

Currently, you will be invited to replace one with a V6, assuming you have Virgin Media broadband.
When the VHD does become obsolete, I expect you would be offered the suitable replacement at that time.

figgyburn 19-02-2018 08:50

Re: Free V6 box

I will just keep both boxes till virgin declare them obsolete then, see what they offer me.

like a few people on here i have no need to record stuff when i have on demand, catch up,netlfix, and all other ways of watching programmes on the net.

where do people find the time to watch all their recorded programmes!.

Re: Free V6 box

They record, rather than rely on catch up and On Demand, and find sufficient to record without Netflix and Amazon Video.

I find it so much easier to watch recorded programmes than mess about with Catch Up etc.
An added bonus is when TiVo has recorded a new series of a favourite programme that I did not know was on again.

I feel the same. The 6 tuners tend to change the way you watch your tv. Like you I find it far easier and with 2 V6 boxes I have 12 tuners which makes it really easy.

Agree about the added bonus as well.

Alot of people like myself never watch live tv anymore since we can plan ahead and record so we then skip all the adverts.

If i was you i would grab the free V6 now.

Free things come to those that wait. At the moment you can only replace one of your boxes for free, no doubt it will eventually be any old box.

Those that plunge in first with the new boxes always pay most, and have to sort out all the faults for the rest of us who end up getting it free ! Very good of you I say ;)

Possibly, but even if it does end up at that, it's unlikely it would be affected by you swapping one of your boxes now.

manage-virgintvgo.virginmedia.com/tivo/boxswap is still not accepting my old email address (not found on system) or my ntlworld.com address (though it confirms that email address is correct as is the password, and they work to sign me in to Myvirginmedia.).

A call to 150 (india) caused much confusion to them, and they decided:

a/. the virgintvgo can only be accessed by a Virginmedia mobile phone (I don't have a mobile)

b/. you can't do boxswap until the V6 is installed.

V6 due to arrive tomorrow, so we shall see...

It arrived.

Swapped the TIVO for the V6.

Swapped the V+HD for the TIVO.

No need of the Powerlink kit they sent.

They also supplied a Hub3, but both the power supply and Hub3 have male connectors so they won't mate. DOH!!! And no, I have not mixed up the power supplies as the one I'm trying to use (LITEON) has a label that reads "connect to your hub".

Now I have to see if I can get Boxswap to work.......

The power socket isn't a male connector - it's the one next to the switch:

It has a pin in the middle. so it's male. I should be able to tell after being in the trade for over 40 years. :dozey:

A nice lady in Scotland agreed that they have sent me 2 identical LITEON PSU's for V6 tivos, and not one for the hub3. In the post tomorrow,

Hi all, I have a TiVo box and 2 VHD boxes. so just to confirm, am I right in thinking that I can replace one of the VHD's for a V6 box or does it have to be whichever the oldest box is (in which case is the TiVo) as I'd rather keep that.

Ring up and check before ordering.

Mind you I did this and they still got it wrong and disconnected the Tivo, not the VHD. Thinking about it, I probably got the Tivo before the VHD so technically it was the older box. It was quickly put right with a phonecall so i wouldn't let it put you off.

You'd need to replace one of the oldest type - which is one of the V HD boxes.

Agree, ordered V6 box via the website, got a confirmatory email confirming the date of delivery saying if there was any change they would contact me. Took the day off for delivery and you guessed it nothing. Phoned Virgin who said they had no trace of the order, they asked me to read out the email, which I did, they apologised and arranged another delivery date. Had to take another day off work which didn't bother me as work sucks. Well done virgin and your shoddy multiple day off giving service :D

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that.

I have spent ages trying to find out how much an extra box will cost me ( upfront cost and ongoing monthly cost).

Would like a V6 but would settle for a TiVo.

I have given up as I cannot find anywhere on the site.

Hello again all
I can have a new V6 box but currently my Hub 3.0 is upstairs at the rear of the house (detached) and my Tivo is downstairs at the front.
Would I be best getting an engineer out and spending £40 to complete the changeover?
TIA

The request form allows you to say that the hub is in a different room to the tivo. They then send out a powerline adapter pair. Also free. :)

Cheers taf, I have had a look into things a little more, I only have one power socket upstairs where my 3.0 Hub is so I will need a through adapter as VM say connection is not very good through an extension lead.
Also VM Dianne has a youtube clip which will help.

Getting onto the V6, she said I can have an engineer out and the powerline adapters FOC, so the engineer will come on the 7th. What did surprise me was that the 15th was the earliest for delivery at home of the V6 through the VM online method.

Re: Free V6 box

I went to order it via their website however when I logged in to my VM account, it said that as I had more than 1 VHD box I couldn't order it online, I had to ring them.
They failed to tell me that when I spoke to them. Anyway, the box is arriving this Friday and he told me that when I connect it, ring them up to activate it which will tell them which box I am replacing. They will also send me an envelope to return the replaced box free of charge.

I received a HUB3 to replace my SHUB2ac.

On inspection I saw that both the HUB3 and it's power supply had male connectors (i.e. a central pin). But the power supply had a label attached "Plug me into your HUB".

I queried this and was told they would send out a new power supply.

It arrived and was identical. LITEON Model PE-1300-9AR3 P/N 599126-001.

I did not dare force the connection, so ignored it for a few days,

Today another power supply arrived, and it has a female connector, so fits perfectly.

LITEON Model PE-1300-9AR5 P/N AREP05647.

Interesting. I thought SHUB2ac (as opposed to original SHUB2) worked with V6 and weren't being replaced if you order a V6.

Final update :)
The engineer came out today and replaced my Tivo with the V6, in spite of my Tivo being downstairs and Hub 3.0 upstairs, it took him 30 minutes but a lot of that was going through the various VM menus with a CSA. He didn't need to fit any powerline adapters or anything, I am glad I got the engineer as he showed me on his Blackberry a series of green lights etc to show everything was working well.

I just hope that I can see an improvement from my Tivo, thanks BM's for any help you gave me.

If you power down your HUB3, you may find the V6 asking to reconnect to the network when the HUB3 is powered up again. A pair of blinking arrows on the V6 lets you know it has no connection. And you have to choose wifi.

I was surprised too, even more so with the free Powerline kit. But I suppose it's easier for them if all the installations become standard.

You'll not regret it, Gus. The V6 is a significant improvement, and now I can bookmark my on demand content with confidence!

Ok, so I've installed the new box, moved my TiVo to another room and it all works well.
The only problem I have is that the new V6 is not showing on their website yet so I can't transfer my settings and planned recordings although they do say that it can take up to 48 hours to show.
Did someone say that you can watch the recordings from the old TiVo on the new V6? I can't remember lol.

Yes, but the TiVo must be connected to your Superhub by Ethernet, either direct cable or via powerline adapters, as well as the cable co-ax connection.

My old TiVo box was connected via wifi not Ethernet and worked ok.
Are you saying that the new v6 must be Ethernet connected as wifi wont work at all?
My old TiVo has always shown on their website and I could manage it on my ipad via the VM app. Has that changed then? (it's still showing btw).

No, TiVo has no WiFi.
TiVo had it’s own Modem for connection.
V6 relies on your broadband.

Thanks RobboEdin, forgot about the TiVo having it's own modem.
So is it that the wifi isn't strong enough for the v6 hence the need to connect it via Ethernet?

Ok I have two TiVO's and a standard V-HD box. I understood that the free upgrade offer was for your oldest TiVO.

When I phoned up the call centre said when I got the home delivery package I would replace the V-HD box. On one hand this sounds good news, but on the other hand I don't want my package price to increase.

Any thoughts on this before I commit and take the old box away...

Thanks in advance

:)

Re: Free V6 box

It's a free upgrade so long as you have Virgin Media's broadband because a condition of getting the V6 is that you are required to take their broadband (smallest is VIVID 50).

An issue for some people is that it's not always easy to get the V6 connected to the hub if the devices are in different rooms. WiFi and powerline don't always work, and an Ethernet cable can be difficult to install.

We hear this a lot and I'm sure it's true. However, it would be interesting to know in what proportion of homes there are problems with wifi. I have a superhub in our study upstairs, the bedroom V6 in an adjacent room and our lounge box downstairs, directly below the bedroom box. The walls are quite thick here, but the wifi works perfectly on both boxes and all our other equipment - laptop, printer, mobile phones and tablets.

No, leave it well alone! The Hub 3.0 is too risky, it's only needed for the VIVID 350 plan.

So I had to phone VM to sort out a problem with the V6 box which was resolved by some tweaking their end but once finished I could then see both my TiVo and V6 on their website. Even though the V6 is connected via wifi, I was able to transfer all the series links from the TiVo to the V6.
Chuffed.
Haven't yet worked out how to watch recordings from one to the other yet though?

You'll need the 'old' TiVo to be connected to your home network via an ethernet cable.

You are right, the system does not seem to work for existing customers. I just had a look - there are a few options online but they appear wrong. We have full house tv/100mb/weekend calls.

It says to upgrade to 200MB, keep full house and upgrade to evening and weekend callls will be an additional £31 per month . To go from weekend calls to Talk More Evenings and Weekends would be £26 more. From 100mb to 350mb would be £31 extra.

No options are shown for adding an additional V6 or Tivo box.

I wanted to see how much it would cost to add a 3rd box to my 2x v6 boxes - cannot get this information off the website.

Should be simple, but is a waste of time for current customers.

Re: Free V6 box

Its not just the website, if you ring different areas of Vm you'll get different prices for the same thing (e.g ordinary CS and retentions). With all these loyalty discounts, inflated standard prices, introductory offers, goodwill payments etc etc, they have utterly confused themselves as well as customers. However you can use this to your advantage i.e ring them all, on different days with different people and take the best price !

Up to now I have been very impressed with the V6.

But last evening it turned into a version of the old TIVO: spinning circles for almost every command, with some lasting several minutes. It's dependence on the internet seems to be its Achille's Heel. From 7pm to 11pm it was horrendous.

Correct. Virgin Media now only want back V6 TV boxes and Hub 3 broadband kit.

Anything else can be recycled once disconnected.

Even if for some reason they did start wanting other kit back, it wouldn't be retroactive.
