Nah, just 11 good individuals that have absolutely no cohesion when shoved together. The tactical diversity in this league doesn't help at all. So many different styles of play compared to Germany/Spain etc. in which the top players from the top teams all play the same style of football.

Rashford has been the most shocking player on the pitch thus far though.

Dier scores, worth nothing he along with Rooney was one of the only ones I rated at the last Euro's. It's come from a pretty shocking corner though, was that Ox or Rashford?

Again, past his best or not, England are missing a leader in Rooney, someone needs to step up. It's hard to fault some of the players here too, the creativity has been atrocious at times, Henderson is another having a mare.

To be fair to Rashford he was playing out of position until switched near the end and I have seen him deliberately take a corner like that for Mata to run onto.

Speaking of that swallow, how many goals and assists has Lukaku had in the recent round of games for Belgium.

Going by your axiom that suggests you think Messi would be a good central defender then?

UEFA want it to happen all across Europe, 17 out of the 18 Bundesliga clubs are in favour, the players union in France is pushing for it, Managers like Allegri at Juventus have been quite vocal in supporting it.

I reckon it's unlikely we'll be the only league doing it by the time next summer comes round.

It's a good idea imo if all the main nations go for it, however if we're the only ones it could backfire in that you could lose a player to a foreign team and not be able to replace them.

What's the problem?

A club only sells a player if they want to.

Given the amount of players leaving the prem for the continent I can't see why people are crying

And clearly the vast majority of prem sides agree that it's a good idea.

The level of naivety shown by Peter Coats earlier was astounding, his only answer seemed to be to tell clubs they're not doing business after a specific date, completely ignoring things like release fee clauses and certain Spanish clubs refusing to take no for an answer. The timing for it to start next season is ludicrous to, there's only going be a month after the world cup finishes to sign players as I doubt clubs will be doing business before hand in case the players have storming world cups. So imo in short this isn't going to solve the problems of players bring unsettled and may make exorbitant transfers fees go even higher. Also our clubs are putting ourselves at a massive disadvantage to, what if Madrid or PSG sign a world class player and put players up for sale to cover it in the last week of their window , our clubs can't bid for them. The play off winners are going to be disadvantaged as are the team that finishes fourth who won't know if they've qualified for the champions league by the time the window shuts

"Serious foul play - a tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play."

He was doing what any striker would be expected to do, that is go for a 50-50 ball. It wasn't malicious at all as his eyes were fixed on the ball, however i admit it could be seen as reckless with the height of his foot and I'd have been annoyed had it been the other way round. Could easily have been a yellow with a different referee, I've seen worse not get a red but it is what it is. At least he made a public apology to the player.

Do try and keep up, this is what you bandying those new rules about should mean, besides which that notwithstanding hasn't there already been two similar incidents to Manes already this season which didn't result in red cards and three match bans

Re: Season 2017/2018

In my mind, Lukaku hasnt lit up United with his performances so far. Notice I say 'performances' rather than 'results' because in terms of the latter, he's a striker, a striker's job is to score and yep he's on 6 in 6 *however* he has missed a few sitters and hasn't done much more so far than be in the right places at the right times.

But let's not forget he's still getting used to the team and the way it plays so I think his performances will stand out quickly enough. Then again if they don't but he keeps hitting the back of the net I won't have a problem with that

But of course as soon as Ibrahimovic is back on the pitch and Lukaku feels what it's like to have that competition in the team I'm looking forward to it bringing the best out of him.

This isn't exactly what I'd call a Fergie Functioning *yet* but it's close and I'm confident for the rest of the season.

Video appeared earlier showing roughly 20,000 Koln fans on the streets of London despite a ticket allocation of 2900 and there's currently an ongoing issue at the Emirates as it's clear more than 2900 are inside the stadium and are spread out all over the place, thus crowd segregation is an absolute mess, Riot police are doing the best they can.

Game was delayed till 21:05pm but could seriously be abandoned if this can't be resolved, their fans are going on absolutely ridiculous.

Thought I heard someone in the BT studio say it was the first time Cologne have been in European competition for forty years, find that surprising but let's hope it's another forty if this is how they behave.

Just checked, it's 25 years since they played in Europe.

Very sad indeed :td: as l remember Tony Woodcock playing for them all those years ago.

I have a season ticket and headed home because of the delay, looks like I made the right decision given what it's like instead the stadium. UEFA need to take action.

Arsenal have questions to answer too. The club staff that is, not that actual team. A flare in the away section, who'd have thought they'd bring flares? cracking job at the turnstiles.

Empty seats all over for a game I presume was sold out too. I hope they find at least a few members that sold their tickets to Koln fans.

Yes that too. I think they knew, hence the delay in opening the stadium, but decided going ahead was the least worse option rather than dispersing the fans.

Amazing when you consider what is spent on players in that that cannot do a proper search and security job on supporters coming into the stadium.

I absolutely hope this turns into a 5-1 turnaround and they go home crying.

It's mostly individual lazy employees, those higher up can't be blamed. I'll get stopped for a can of coke at Newcastle and my mate behind me will just cosy on through with his. Although I work in the industry I was always told it was to stop you throwing it at players and safety reasons and never really found out why because you can purchase bottles inside which weigh the same if not more...

They take the cap off bottles inside stadiums to make it harder to throw

TIL, it's been ages since I purchased one in the ground to realise this. Although I've spent a lot of time in hospitality areas for work and you they just have it buffet layout up there and you just grab any drinks from the fridge as it's unlikely Peter Beardsley is going to be throwing a bottle.

Yeah this is mostly concerts and football games. I've been to festivals and theatre shows where they don't do this. Although now I think about it the times I've purchased cans of beer at a festival they did insist on opening it first.

You can't even buy alcohol at UEFA competitions, completely dry inside the stadium.

Newcastle 4th, City 6-0 Watford. Liverpool have 35 shots and score 1. Welcome back league.

It's rapidly becoming a non contact sport. The Leeds of the 70's or Wimbledon of the 80's would have their entire teams banned under current guidelines.

Yes its taking a lot out of the game IMO Dave with overzealous refs just raring to get out their cards.

Apart from the first goal it was a very disjointed display today. Worth the entry fee to see that goal though, and although he missed a sitter the Belgian swallow scores his 7th in seven. 😉

We weren't great for over half of the match but we'd have drawn that 0-0 last season. I'm not going to complain if we play badly and still win like that.

Everton are going to end up in a relegation battle if they don't sort out their striker situation. £150m spent and they didn't replace Lukaku, January is going to be an expensive month for them.

Showing his instincts as a born goal scorer, in the right place at the right time. :p:

I'm going to hold off until at least Christmas before being certain of this but it does feel like the fear factor is returning to United. Certainly there is an air of confidence around the place that LVG could never create and Moyes had never heard of.

Wasn't impressed with Lukaku's celebration though, pretty certain Rooney wouldn't have been so disrespectful.

Speaking of Rooney, again it seems United play better without him on the team....

iadom 17-09-2017 20:15

Re: Season 2017/2018

Hmm, I heard one wag say that United were a much better team without Rooney on the pitch, harsh but probably true.;)

TBH I much prefer to see a striker celebrate his goals, can't do with this mock modesty all the time.

A swift edit there Russ, in fact United are the only Premiership team that Rooney has not scored against.
