Poor old Iceland and to think there were people on here (looks at kymmy) who didn't want them and the other little countries like Wales and n Ireland to take part

l am glad the Championships have been opened up to more teams as the one thing we don't want is the elite protecting themselves yet again as we have seen in a whole variety of things lately.

Re: Euro 2016 thread

I think that England have been shown as simply awful, at the way France have destroyed Iceland.

But there again, it goes to show you how pathetic the whole England is at the way, they have been showing off on Holiday.

I saw in the papers the other day Rooney, showing off on holiday. As if to say the thousnads of English supporters, 'don't give a damn' we are off on holiday.

As l understand it, Rooney booked his holidays, days BEFORE England went out.

I hope that Poch of Spurs, puts the Spurs players through extra training. And tells them to be back in TWO WEEKS, and not a month. To teach them a lesson.

Win lose or draw we're just going to enjoy ourselves tonight. Nobody gave us a cat's chance in hell but here we are in the semis. I think the Boyos have done us proud and obviously we'd love a win but either way....wow :)

Yes Wales have nothing to lose tonight and everything to gain as the bookies seem to favour Portugal to go through but one thing that can be guaranteed is Wales will give it 100% unlike some other teams.

Ronaldo is just a cheat, very good one. He kept going down on the slightest touch.

I was hoping that someone would chop him so much to break his legs. Teach the sun of a bitch to stop being so cocky.

Its true what ITV said tonight. With Ronaldo, Portugal are just an ordinary team.

I thought that Wales were brilliant. They played with guts and blood. Well done to Wales.

On the night Portugal were the better team but to me the format of the competition has been a joke. Portugal came 3rd in the group with 3 draws and overall didnt deserve to be where they were.

The format is not a joke.

Were they a bit lucky to get past the groups, possibly, but they are unbeaten, and have got past three knockout rounds (and played well last night).
As much as I dislike Ronaldo, I believe they deserve their place.

Can't see the final being a classic, Portugal are very ordinary apart from CR7. Watching Germany tonight was 'almost' like watching England, they never looked like scoring.

Yes at the moment there are certainly no great international teams out there that's for sure as France are alright but they are nothing special and Portugal as you say are very ordinary apart from Ronny.

I think it's strange that they're having a parade and huge celebration. The only good result they had was against Belgium. They beat an awful Russian team and Slovakia and Northern Ireland who you would expect them to beat. Is it really something to celebrate so much? Its as if they're celebrating because they did better than England.

England had an open top bus after italia 90 iirc, I thought it rediculous then and Wales probably should've learnt from our silliness, a nice civic reception with the dignitaries would have sufficed imo as long as everyone that wanted to could've seen them.

Are you serious?!

We've been written off for almost 60 years, been constantly told we're a small and insignificant footballing nation but came within 2 games of winning a major international tournament.

THAT is worth any such country celebrating.

http://www.skysports.com/football/ne...-above-england

Pfft, what a non-story. We're used to it now ;) :D

But seriously, I don't see the need to point out we're above England or any other team. The fact is we are surprising people by being on such an upward spiral and I'd rather we focus on that. OK we'll always have national sporting rivalries but cultivating those won't bring success.

I'd rather all the home nations stick together and show the rest of the world what the UK can do. I confess to getting a kick out of hearing some non-Brits saying things like "I hadn't heard of Wales before" or "I didn't know Wales had a team" as a passive-aggressive petty dig - fine by me, they'll be hearing about us now :)

For me coming 3rd/4th isnt worthy of celebrating so much. Yes be proud of your country/team but lining the streets and having a parade? Not for me. If Andy Murray wins Wimbledon today he won't get an open top bus parade, the same if Lewis Hamilton win the British GP, both much bigger achievements than finishing 3rd/4th at the euros.

Sorry Shadow but l am with Russ on this as why should they not celebrate as its pretty rare until now for Wales to qualify for a major football tournament and to reach the semi finals for a country which usually excels at rugby union that is a major achievement in my book and one that should be celebrated in my opinion.

That's because you're not from a country that hadn't qualified for anything in almost 60 years and in all that time were told they'd never amount to anything.

In all seriousness I wouldn't expect England to understand - your national team qualifies for the Euro and World Cup almost every time.

Well another very average team wins the European Championship but then average teams with a decent grasp of tactics can take you a long way as Greece and Denmark spring to mind before as you can have egoistic talented individuals but the fact remains is that they will win you diddly squat as we have seen yet again.

Goal of the Tournament: Hal Robson-Kanu-Cruyff (Wales v Belgium);
Homecoming of the Tournament: Wales - Sunny Cardiff, open top buses; Manic Street Preachers

No one said they shouldn't celebrate their achievements, they said don't have an open top bus parade as that's normally reserved for winners who take the cup with them and in ramos iirc case drop it under the wheels of the bus. I am sure I remember England having one after italia 90 when the nation got caught up in gazza mania and I was pretty unimpressed then to.

Only seen it once but it looked to me like ronaldo was expecting it and trying to draw the foul so it was karma indeed that he had to go of because of his cheating ways if so. That said he has actually gone up in my estimations due to his behaviour after coming of.

iadom 12-07-2016 10:08

Re: Euro 2016 thread

Payet has previous as I have witnessed first hand, in the FA Cup quarter final at Old Trafford he put in a filthy challenge on a United defender who eventually had to be subbed. He only got a yellow for that when it would have been a red card if it was defender who had put in that 'assault'. Then to rub salt in he possibly should have had another yellow as he was judged ( possibly harshly ) to have dived in the box and minutes later scores with a stunning free kick.

That United equalised with a dodgy goal in extra time then won the replay could also be karma..;):)

You don't need Chinese proverbs, it's quite simple: national pride. Especially after being told for so long how you're crap and won't amount to anything.
