Watch to W is more than a rebrand it is a complete change of focus. W is taking one some shows that were destined for BBC3 a documentary series called ON and a new series of a show thats previously aired on BBC3 The Call Centre it is going more after the youth market moving to fill the gap that BBC3 is leaving. W is launching on the first day after BBC3 goes off air. They will also show Eastenders hours after BBC1.

Didn't say too much about it other than it was a faster much improved Tivo compared to what we have now with more tuners

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)
The trouble is that many are not happy when there is an absence of new channels coming to VM. Take another look at those posts in 2014 on this thread and look how happy people were then!
What amazes me is that people are satisfied even when the channels added contain 100% drivel! It is so sad to see posts pleading for the likes of Tru TV, etc, etc. I don't care whether it is new channels, more streaming services or more on demand - what matters to me is good quality content. Many (although not all) would be happy to ditch all the reality and dumbed down channels in favour of Sky Atlantic and ITV Encore. If only there was a way we could do this. Cue here for Dave 42 to post that there's not a cat in hell's chance of SA coming to Virgin any time soon.... |

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)
With Sky following VM's way of "renting" the hardware (new boxes) to customers, It seems they are trying to keep the price down to a minimum...I did read packages starting at £42 with the Sky Q, but didn't say exactly how much of that was for the box itself.
I hope VM can try to keep costs down too....but I agree that there will be an installation fee, plus a (INSERT NAME) box fee like the other boxes they have. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)
Does anyone think the new TiVo box rumour is just a misunderstanding and what is actually on its way is a software update for the existing hardware platform?

The Olympics. The boxes that only do MPEG2 are at the end of their life. Since the last time the Olympics took place, new HD channels have appeared on the streams that were used so moving to AVC/H.264 encoding frees up room to have both.
Rights for the Olympics this time have gone to Eurosport, who are owned by Discovery, in which John Malone the Liberty Global chairman has a very substantial stake. If there were problems it wouldn't look good for him. |

Virgin Media must introduce a new TiVo box if only to compete with Sky Q and to be able to show 4K when it becomes available. Increased capacity (and more tuners) would be welcome, too. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)
The current V+ HD box swap activity is due to changes to how Sky Sports and Movies HD are broadcast. Nothing to do with the Olympics at this stage.

Seriously though the prospect of a new box would have implications for the existing platform. We'd have to hope that if there is a new box that its software is on the same software branch as the existing box so that we don't get in the situation where users of the existing platform miss out on updates only done in the new box's code branch. But that too may present its own problems. Going by how the last Tivo box was released I'd expect if there is to be a new box that we'll hear about it very soon (assuming VM are not designating September as summer). |

For example, in the US, the Roamio got the Amazon Prime update several months before the Premier (which the VM Tivo is based on), and there will come a time when the Premier won't get updates. The Premier surely must be coming to the end of it's potential upgrade life for any significant functionality additions. And it's not unreasonable that a new box will have functionality that just can't be added to the old box. This is why I wonder where VM will pitch their new box. If the are looking at competing with Sky Q, it must be at least an enhanced Bolt based box, which will run a different update path to the current Tivo. Or will they go for essentially the current Tivo with beefed up hardware i.e. faster processor, bigger hard drive and maybe an extra couple of tuners. |

TIVO should have been great and VM have missed an opportunity to make it so. It's slow, clunky and sometimes unresponsive. I didn't think I would leave VM, but my contract is up soon, and I'm not going to renew. TIVO IMO is a very flawed product.

Back on topic, having looked at the Sky Q offering in some detail I don't think there's much VM need to do to bring the TiVO into line. My main gripe is that since moving to the Haxe platform both my boxes have become that little but less reliable. Sky Q isn't really doing anything that new, just making some things more straight forward (e.g. multiroom, downloading content to mobile devices) and it doesn't seem to have wishlists or auto clash resolution. If VM can produce a new box, or at the very least new software, that is that little bit more reliable then I think they'll still have a competitive offering. The risk will be if they've invested too much in some fancy new feature that doesn't quite work right or is severely restricted due to licensing. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)
My TIvo is really laggy, you get used to it after a few years being that way, but having used other boxes recently, you realise how slow and unresponsive it is. I personally can't wait to see the back of it. Personal choice I know.
My decision does also involve cost cutting as well, so I don't want to be to tough on Tivo as aspects of it are good, but it was not made the best of by VM. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)
My TIVO is also very laggy, trying to launch Chilled or Iplayer takes an age. Also randomly from time to time it just refuses to do anything when i press buttons on my remote. My virgin contract is up next month and i am strongly thinking about just getting an Android box to replace it.
|
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)
Another price rise this month, thats whats coming to VM, and sweet nothing in return in terms of channels. Sky Atlantic, Talking Pictures, Spike, Movies4men, ITV encore, Moviemix and others, all missing, presumed dead on VM.

Really, VM/Liberty are on a cusp. They can now deliver faster download speeds than most people currently don't need or want. But lack basic things on the tv side (as has always been the case with UK cable) like a fast stb, missing channels etc Pre Netflix/Amazon, this didn't matter. Now it does. Everyone still wants a net connection, but the tv side of things looks a far less attractive option. Either VM adapt to the new world or, as may happen with CBS/Viacom soon, die. |
