Unfortunately not, at least not at the moment. Racing UK is launching on Sky only in March, but we’ll be looking to extend this to Virgin Media in the future at some point. Virgin Media customers can now watch Racing UK on multiple devices through the Virgin TV Anywhere service.

Key points I thought he made were comparing US to European market. He said that due to stronger competition in Europe, content is a third cheaper than the US. He said in Europe, Netflix was more of a content provider like HBO and was not a competitor to cable.
In terms of growth for LG, he saw it coming from mobile phones and from passing more homes with cable.

Watch to W is more than a rebrand it is a complete change of focus. W is taking one some shows that were destined for BBC3 a documentary series called ON and a new series of a show thats previously aired on BBC3 The Call Centre it is going more after the youth market moving to fill the gap that BBC3 is leaving. W is launching on the first day after BBC3 goes off air. They will also show Eastenders hours after BBC1.

We just been thinking what is UKTV doing?

We mean what the point in having Really TV Channel on Virgin UK Channel 283 - wikipedia says it shows "female lifestyle programming" so that will be two UKTV Channels for the female audience.

Unless Really is set to close and they channel slot re-use for Drama +1.

Wikipedia is not an original source nor is it necessarily up to date.
Looking at the UKTV website, Really seems to be FTA real life programming (Homes Under The Hammer, Embarrassing Bodies, Most Haunted) whilst W is a pay TV channel described by UKTV as a premium entertainment channel. As well as some reality content (eg Nev's Indian Call Centre) it has drama on it like Eastenders and Grimm.

Which is why I could never understand why they put Covert Affairs on Really. Ok, the lead role fitted the female skew, but an action based drama on Really? Just didn't fit, really (pun intended)

Always take things like that with a pince of salt, either most people won't know much at all or those that are actually alpha/beta testing will have signed an NDA and will not be able to say a word(I know as I used to be one of them) Am in a similar situation with my current employer too.

Sky Atlantic will not be on virgin media until 2019 at the earliest.
VM are looking into gaining more exclusive on demand content Salem is currently on their radar according to a rumour.
ITV Encore could launch on VM as early as Autumn this year.

'Much improved' doesn't exactly sound like Tivo Bolt/Sky Q territory.

Still, given that the guy would be under a NDA, maybe best not to read too much in to that?

It does make me wonder where VM have decided to pitch a new box. After all, how many average customers want/need the functionality of a Tivo Bolt/Sky Q? Many will be happy with just a faster Tivo with a couple of extra tuners.

Thanks for the link MB. The 'more things' could tie up with a post I made previously; a box that has Bolt functionality combined with an updated/replaced Roamio.

If that truly is the case, rather than wishful speculation, then, 'Much improved' really would be the understatement of the year.

The trouble is that many are not happy when there is an absence of new channels coming to VM. Take another look at those posts in 2014 on this thread and look how happy people were then!

What amazes me is that people are satisfied even when the channels added contain 100% drivel! It is so sad to see posts pleading for the likes of Tru TV, etc, etc.

I don't care whether it is new channels, more streaming services or more on demand - what matters to me is good quality content. Many (although not all) would be happy to ditch all the reality and dumbed down channels in favour of Sky Atlantic and ITV Encore. If only there was a way we could do this.

Cue here for Dave 42 to post that there's not a cat in hell's chance of SA coming to Virgin any time soon....

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)

With Sky following VM's way of "renting" the hardware (new boxes) to customers, It seems they are trying to keep the price down to a minimum...I did read packages starting at £42 with the Sky Q, but didn't say exactly how much of that was for the box itself.

I hope VM can try to keep costs down too....but I agree that there will be an installation fee, plus a (INSERT NAME) box fee like the other boxes they have.

Does anyone think the new TiVo box rumour is just a misunderstanding and what is actually on its way is a software update for the existing hardware platform?

I don't care whether it is new channels, more streaming services or more on demand - what matters to me is good quality content. Many (although not all) would be happy to ditch all the reality and dumbed down channels in favour of Sky Atlantic and ITV Encore. If only there was a way we could do this.

Cue here for Dave 42 to post that there's not a cat in hell's chance of SA coming to Virgin any time soon....

Hmmm. Your "drivel" is another persons likes.

Personally, ITV Encore is just repeats in the main, so in my opinion, pointless

From what I understand, there is (was) a new Tivo in trial, but it encountered problems.
As I was not on the trial however, I cannot say this for 100%

Have you heard a rumour or do you have insight? I remember another interestingly worded post from you a while ago that suggested it may be the latter.

ITV Encore are supposedly adding new content in 2016. I think ITV said that the first year would consist of repeats of their best dramas and 2016 would bring new content. I assume the new content will filter down to regular channels at a later date.

I think that there will be a new box and also a major update of all the older Tivo boxes as well?

Also they have been changing the SA V+ boxes for Tivo, so something is on the horizon?

If the following posted in the Sky Q and VM answer???? thread is anything to go by I think there is a new box on the way.

The Olympics. The boxes that only do MPEG2 are at the end of their life. Since the last time the Olympics took place, new HD channels have appeared on the streams that were used so moving to AVC/H.264 encoding frees up room to have both.

Rights for the Olympics this time have gone to Eurosport, who are owned by Discovery, in which John Malone the Liberty Global chairman has a very substantial stake. If there were problems it wouldn't look good for him.

As I understand it the reason for swapping out the older SA V+ boxes is that in the very near future they will no longer be capable of receiving much of the Sky channels' output due to a new method of encoding. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will correct me if I'm wrong.

Virgin Media must introduce a new TiVo box if only to compete with Sky Q and to be able to show 4K when it becomes available. Increased capacity (and more tuners) would be welcome, too.

The current V+ HD box swap activity is due to changes to how Sky Sports and Movies HD are broadcast. Nothing to do with the Olympics at this stage.

That may be the case. There was an update that the US Premier Tivo got around Feb/March last year that we haven't had yet. One part of it was enabling Amazon Prime. There were other aspects as well though.

The Samsung boxes are backwards compatible as they will both MPEG 2/4 ,The SA will only do MPEG 2

That would be telling :-P

Seriously though the prospect of a new box would have implications for the existing platform. We'd have to hope that if there is a new box that its software is on the same software branch as the existing box so that we don't get in the situation where users of the existing platform miss out on updates only done in the new box's code branch. But that too may present its own problems.

Going by how the last Tivo box was released I'd expect if there is to be a new box that we'll hear about it very soon (assuming VM are not designating September as summer).

But that too may present its own problems.

If they are going to do a decent update from the current Tivo, that will be partially unavoidable.

For example, in the US, the Roamio got the Amazon Prime update several months before the Premier (which the VM Tivo is based on), and there will come a time when the Premier won't get updates. The Premier surely must be coming to the end of it's potential upgrade life for any significant functionality additions.

And it's not unreasonable that a new box will have functionality that just can't be added to the old box.

This is why I wonder where VM will pitch their new box. If the are looking at competing with Sky Q, it must be at least an enhanced Bolt based box, which will run a different update path to the current Tivo. Or will they go for essentially the current Tivo with beefed up hardware i.e. faster processor, bigger hard drive and maybe an extra couple of tuners.

TIVO should have been great and VM have missed an opportunity to make it so. It's slow, clunky and sometimes unresponsive. I didn't think I would leave VM, but my contract is up soon, and I'm not going to renew. TIVO IMO is a very flawed product.

The Tivo hasn't always been slow - mine was pretty nifty when we first got it.

You might want to hold off doing anything until we get more information on the new model, rumoured to be coming in the summer.

Our Virgin Media UK sources say:

New tivo coming in time for the Olympics.

The new TiVo box will do more than three new things - (Media Boy HQ can't post what they are due to an DNP order).

Beat this if you can:

Yesterday someone in my family said goodbye to an old V+ HD box. They got an new V+ HD Box.

The Virgin Media UK Worker told them the following:

You well look after that old Telewest TV Drive box.

You has it since September 13th 2006.

I have a pair of TiVos, both around a year old. My 1TB box isn't too slow and seems to perform acceptably, but the Samsung 500Gb TiVo that I got to replace an ancient Samsung V+ is painfully slow to load even the My Shows menu, and I can go off an make a cup of tea whilst waiting for the On Demand menus.
And if I launch iPlayer I have time to drink said tea before I can watch a programme...

Same boat, although mine is the 48k rubber key beast. Although it is easier and quicker to power up my Pi and run an emulator.

Back on topic, having looked at the Sky Q offering in some detail I don't think there's much VM need to do to bring the TiVO into line. My main gripe is that since moving to the Haxe platform both my boxes have become that little but less reliable.

Sky Q isn't really doing anything that new, just making some things more straight forward (e.g. multiroom, downloading content to mobile devices) and it doesn't seem to have wishlists or auto clash resolution. If VM can produce a new box, or at the very least new software, that is that little bit more reliable then I think they'll still have a competitive offering. The risk will be if they've invested too much in some fancy new feature that doesn't quite work right or is severely restricted due to licensing.

nicknewark 05-02-2016 07:28

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)

My TIvo is really laggy, you get used to it after a few years being that way, but having used other boxes recently, you realise how slow and unresponsive it is. I personally can't wait to see the back of it. Personal choice I know.

My decision does also involve cost cutting as well, so I don't want to be to tough on Tivo as aspects of it are good, but it was not made the best of by VM.

Bananaman_007 06-02-2016 12:22

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)

My TIVO is also very laggy, trying to launch Chilled or Iplayer takes an age. Also randomly from time to time it just refuses to do anything when i press buttons on my remote. My virgin contract is up next month and i am strongly thinking about just getting an Android box to replace it.

Indeed. I've never seen one so don't know either, but it does look good. Whether it works is another matter. According to what's been posted on youtube etc it seems okay, but you can never tell until one is right in front of you.

But we get the speed increase instead to sort our own "channels" out....

Really, VM/Liberty are on a cusp. They can now deliver faster download speeds than most people currently don't need or want. But lack basic things on the tv side (as has always been the case with UK cable) like a fast stb, missing channels etc

Pre Netflix/Amazon, this didn't matter. Now it does. Everyone still wants a net connection, but the tv side of things looks a far less attractive option. Either VM adapt to the new world or, as may happen with CBS/Viacom soon, die.

If the price goes up again. Our price has already risen. But if it goes up again this year, then l will go back to Sky.

On Sky, you get all the channels out there. With VM, they are just taking us, the customers for mugs.

They di it last year, by saying BT Sport was Free, strange the price went up, for package.

Why do VM take us for mugs.
