i find virgin arent that bothered about channel launches now and seem more determined in adding additional services like lovefilm thats all they seem bothered about when they have these "discussions".

didnt someone say that VM are running out of space anyway or did NGTV fix that?

Probably don't like the closed system VM operates. We nearly had the same situation with BT sports. LFC TV have far more control of costs by piggy backing onto Sky's cards.

LFC TV used to be available on VM by obtaining the Setanta bundle. I wonder if they have explored the possibility of piggybacking onto BT Sport?

Last I heard was that VM had invested in new kit and that capacity wasn't an issue.

Does a LFC TV app exist? If so, this would at least allow VM customers the option to subscribe and watch on their television via the TiVo.

VM comment about the situation:

Who knows, kinda like what I was saying a few days ago about VM losing ground again after spending so much effort last year playing catch up.

As far as the loss of this channel is concerned though, I'll just leave this link here to sum it up... ;)

I think it is quite simply that LFC can't control the subscription and revenue of the channel as freely as they can on sky and given that everything seems to be so much like hard work launching on VM they have probably decided they ain't gonna sell gold for the price of silver... I know MUTV HD havnt closed the door to launching on VM but they want to do it at no extra cost to the consumer which is to be commended, but they can't do it on VM without VM sharing the cost....

Do you think the XL subscription will be reduced (by £7 since that is the subscription charge) now that this channel is no more. Pigs fly etc.

Has there been a reason for the sudden parting of Spotify and VM partnership? First us customers knew was when the Premium Service via Tivo stopped.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 4

With regards to those disappoined by the whole Liverpool TV/MUTV exclusive deals, it's no different to VM paying for exclusive rights to TIVO or VM withholding their BB in my eyes. How much do VM pay TIVO for exclusive rights?

If Sky pay good money to help launch a channel or two, why should they let anyone else have access to it? If VM were willing to help fund the channel, I am pretty sure they could have got the channel on the platform.

If VM started to market the corner in content based apps and stopped smart TV's or Sky having having them, would that be acceptable? Two wrongs don't make a right after all.

Waitrose pay Heston Blumenthal to produce exclusive meals, deserts, snacks, drinks, alcoho, Christmas products and to advertise for Waitrose. Should Waitrose allow Heston to give all the products to Tesco or Sainsbury without Tesco or Sainsbury paying back Waitrose for their original outlay given to H.B.? Would a film company, who financed a film, allow another company to screen the film without paying any royalties? It would never happen. Whilst exclusivity may be wrong, we accept in many different aspects of our lives.

Don't get me wrong. I am not a fan of Sky with holding content, but I understand it is their right to do so. VM had Film4hd exclusive for long enough, but no-one seemed to mind about that.

It seems that when it comes to a few select TV channels that Sky keep exclusive, Sky are the worst people in the world, even though the content is readily available elsewhere. I am not Sky's biggest fan, but they ar every little wrong.

Presumably the contract came to an end and the parties were unable to come to an agreement for the future. In the States this often happens with TV channels; negotiations go the wire and lost channels sometimes reappear.

I still can't believe people think that that when a single channel gets removed.

Well put but i think ofcom have to get involved at some point to stop this happening. I know the argument is its a business and this is how business should be. Perhaps in competing coffee shops on the same high street yes but why must we television do the same? the uproar which would have happened in the 80s if channel 4 had launched exclusively to people in southern england.

i know im a dreamer but surely something must be done to protect the consumer more. Where in theory vm will bring you benefits for some stuff and sky benefits for other stuff but having both costs too much.

Virgin won't have paid anything like £7 for the service - assuming they paid anything atall. For example, VM only paid around £3.50pm per XL customer for BT Sport which cost £12pm at the time.

MB Views: LFC TV to reappear at later date on Virgin Media?

I know that Virgin has says LFC TV has been axe from Virgin Media but why is the EPG on Channel 544 still not saying "Channel no longer broadcasting" for?

On V and V+ Boxes it saying: "LFC TV is upgrading its service"

Media Boy HQ thinks Virgin are still in talks with Liverpool FC - Look what happen with ESPN in August 2013.

There is no exclusivity on MUTV HD, MUTV can't reach a deal with VM because of all the reasons that make VM an awquard an obstinate delivery vehicle.

---------- Post added at 12:55 ---------- Previous post was at 12:51 ----------

Ps MUTV bought themselves out from other broadcasters so they could market their own product, given that MUTV is available all over the world on various satellite and cable platforms they arnt the ones holding up a deal with VM.

I would like to agree with you but the VM statement seems to kill off all hope of it coming. Whereas with BT Sport in 2013 VM said it was in negotiations.

Sorry, perhaps my post was not as clear as it could have been. It was to make a point about exclusive content. No-one minds about the exclusives on Netflix and Amazon, but they despise the Sky for doing the same.

I did not mean for it a be a comparison between Sky and Netflix as direct content providers.

Apologies again.

I was actually trying to justify why people might have no problem with exclusives with Netflix/Amazon and not with sky based on availability to subscribe being the reason

I'm not sure about Netflix but Amazon have shows like Extant, Copper, Black Sails and Vikings Season 2 which they've lifted from American TV. 4 great shows that would do well on British TV.

but buys exclusive UK programmes for the us market such as Derek, Happy Valley.

i understand companies who make their own shows and then want to be able to show them only. thats fine. i have vm i can get netflix for a fiver. i have a computer i can watch amazon prime for a fiver nice.

but what ofcom should do (in a perfect world) is stopping spiteful sky withholding programs theyve simply bought in due to their vast wealth and then withhold from people who cant get or dont want satellites planted on their roofs.

However ofcom is spineless and toothless and sadly governments are in bed with murdoch.

So how is that different to Sky? No one can do anything about Sky's exclusives either. If people do mind about Netflix/Amazon et al, why not complain about them as well? There is no difference between either company.

I fail to see why Sky are the only "bad guys" here.

But Sky make some original programmes as well. They have also stated they will put money into more, original home made programmes. I understand Fortitude is made by Sky, so I take it you won't be upset by not being able to watch that on VM.

Also, as pointed out earlier, Netflix and Amazon buy exclusive content too.

As you clearly state, you have a computer. You can watch NowTV on it as well, which has Atlantic content too. Why not just pay for NowTV instead of Netflix or Amazon?

Because at one time, all significant Sky branded channels were available on VM, even if some were only SD.

Then the sale of VM channels (Living etc.) to Sky happened and then Sky shortly afterwards, launched Atlantic as exclusive to them. It left a sour taste over the whole issue.

Streaming services always used exclusive content deals to attract customers. No one likes it, but it has always been the way of that business.

Now TV is an option. But it is a very poor substitute for an HBO Go service because it doesn't have back seasons always available.

But people who pay a lot for the XL TV package feel it is wrong to have to shell out even more to get HBO content via Now TV, when all the main Sky channels used to be included in the cost of XL. TV.

Sky's original programming is horrendous that's why they buy in so much if it. I think the point raised about virgin selling uktv to sky and then sky launching their own channel exclusively straight after shows the nastiness of sky. Some may class it as good business strategy I call it ****. In industry this is fine but in a tv landscape with one company butchering creativity and destroying consumers choice by basically saying "you can have that or that but not both" something should be done

If I was a billionaire id launch my own channel and buy up as much as I could as exclusive content and then give it away to bt and virgin for free. And then sky trundled up my front path smugly asking for it id grab them by the balls and ask for the earth.

Fair enough PB, but why can Sky not change the way they operate? They have changed the goal posts and it appears to work for them. They are not on this planet to be liked - neither are VM (who we know full well upset many on here too). If Sky saw Netflix were expanding due to them offering exclusives, why shouldn't they have done something similar? I know Sky now say Atlantic is used to keep custmoers, but originally it would have been used to attract customers from rivals.

LG/VM could easily have struck a couple of exclusive deals with channels from all over the world if they wanted, over the past 4-5 years. They have simply chosen not to - but two two wrongs make a right in my eyes.

You mention about XL customers not wanting to pay more, but our bills have always gone up when new channels (including the newest Sky HD channels) have launched and our bills will go up again if we ever get Atlantic. Admittedly the bills will not go up as much as the nowtv subs though.

It may well be nasty of Sky, but the facts of the matter are, they do run a business - they may be **** in many peoples eyes, but what do they care? They are making the profits they need to make. VM/LG could still do the same and buy exclusive content (they could, in theory, launch an exlusive new channel from C4 if they chose to), but they choose not to.

Were VM nasty not to offer Sky their BB? Was it nasty of BT to offer BT Sport free with their BB? No, VM need a USP, as do Sky and BT.
Bearing in mind, we get the vast majority of content Sky have on VM, Sky need to do something to stop people jumping ship to get a potentially better deal from VM. Atlantic does this, probably at a considerable cost to Sky too.

It would be nice if a rival of Sky took them by the balls, but for some reason they will not.

Netflix were storming in the States at that time though. I am sure Sky would have looked at what was making Netflix in the States so successful, and if see they incorporate anything similar in their offering.

Sky Atlantic was there to give Sky a USP. Now TV is there because Sky's satellite subscriptions have more or less peaked and it is looking to target the 40% of households that don't want a full-blown package and currently take Freeview.

It will be overseen by Channel 5 and initially will carry both US factual programmes including Bar Rescue as well as repeats of Channel 5 factual series such as Cowboy Builders and Police Interceptors. It will eventually commission its own programmes.

I guess BET +1 must have had low ratings (even lower than 5 +24).

I see no technical reason why VM also have to lose a channel in order to accommodate Spike TV.

As far as I'm aware Viacom just said they would just acquire space from VM. It's just Sky SD that has a one-channel-in, one-channel-out issue isn't it?

Yes, what I was getting at was that if we lose a Viacom channel, it will be down to the carriage agreement as opposed to technical limitations eg when Channel 4 +1 started we lost a channel (More 4 +1 IIRC).

Agreed, the boot's on the other foot now. VM has no capacity issues at the moment whilst Sky has a cap on SD channels which I believe is due to limitations of some older boxes.

Am I being incredibly stupid in asking this, but if Viacom decide to pull a channel on Sky because Sky don't have the space, why should VM lose channels if they have space to keep it? Surely VM can strike a deal to keep the channel? Well, provided the channel is profitable for Viacom I suppose.

The channel they pulled on Sky was BET +1, which didn't exist on VM.

Sometimes if a company wants to launch a new channel, they will tell VM to replace another one from their stable with the new one. This can be down to such things as them wanting to launch the new channel quickly (without the need for negotiations or signing new contracts) or the channel providers not wanting to pay any extra carriage costs to VM.

Yes it has, they are also advertised on the VM barker channel.

It took long enough for this to appear though after VM were first offered them- years in fact!

VM did not feel that they were worth the price being asked for them (particularly as much of it is duplicated elsewhere).

In (my view only) UKTV must have now realised that VM weren't going to budge on this and that a reduced income is better than none.

The additional on-demand channels is welcome news as far as I`m concerned. I just hope they increase the content some what in the coming weeks.

On Tuesday night Media Boy HQ found that Virgin Media has added an new steam for Liverpool FC TV just for the listing to say 'Channel no longer broadcasting'.

Info was found due to Virgin Media adding an new channel to "Total Channels".

Also Channel was removed from "Favourites" on my V+ Box. (MB HQ did not remove it)

So does LFC TV now have two streams on VM, both saying "Channel no longer broadcasting"?

The other stream was removed from Virgin Media boxes.

---------- Post added at 11:24 ---------- Previous post was at 11:16 ----------

MB Views: Virgin Media can save money and add up to 29 new channels.

In the last few months Sony Pictures Television has took over CSC Media Group and Viacom has also took over Channel 5 so Virgin Media must be paying SPT and Viacom two times an month.

How do you think that adding these channels will save them money?

It's been awfully quiet in here the past few days, not that I have anything to report (it's unlikely that I will be able to garner any new information in the run up to Christmas either with everybody being so busy).

Does anyone have any new info on when Sky News HD & Sky Sports News HD will launch? Last I heard was early 2015. It'll be nice if it was added on New Years Eve so I can watch the fireworks from London at midnight in all the HD glory! :D

Oh hang on... I'll tune into Sky 1 HD instead. :D

I believe that channels can be launched remotely, negating the need for staff to have to go in during the holidays.

Reuse some of the save money on getting the rights to more channels from SPT or Viacom.

Do Viacom want 5* +1 and Spike TV on Virgin Media?

All info I have on Channels launching soon are on line right now - see Virgin TV on my Signature.

Media Boy HQ is starting to think Virgin Media may not launch any more UK Wide Channels in 2014. Due to that big TiVo update and Virgin being busy with moving Smallworld Cable into the Virgin Media Family home.

This will be the outcome of new talks that commenced in 2013, and given that it was originally expected that all the missing channels would be on the agenda, it will be interesting to see what else might be coming along with the launch of these two channels (eg Sky 1+1).

No confirmed news on what will happen to all the missing Smallworld Channels when Virgin axe the Smallworld brand and channel lineup.

Q) What channels are Virgin Media viewers missing?

A) Here is the list of channels only on Smallworld.

-Sky1 +1*
-MTV +1*
-Travel Channel +1
-Food Network +1
-Movies4Men*
-MTV Classic*
-Channel AKA
-Now Music

*Media Boy HQ think Virgin Media will add some channels - the ones with an star besize it - to all areas in 2015 due to the channel owners being BSkyB, Sony and Viacom.

I think MB is wearing his rose tinted spectacles. Apparently, when carriage contracts switch from 2 monthly payments to a single payment, 2 plus 2 now equals 3. ;)

As Virgin pick up the Satellite feed of Smooth Radio's London output & not the dreadful Mono DAB feed, it's unlikely you will see this temporary service on Virgin. In many local DAB areas, Smooth replaced Gold with their 128Kbps stereo service, duplicating the existing output (with the exception of local ads & travel info) on the Digital One MUX.

I really think Global Radio may axe Gold Radio from Digital TV for Smooth Extra to launch in 2015.

Look like Global are running down Gold Radio - Been axe from AM in some parts of England.
