In this Windows 10 build 10041, the Mail, Calendar, and People apps may be broken due to a licensing issue with the Store Beta. To get these apps working again, you need to follow these steps:

•Open powershell as administrator
•Run the command Get-appxprovisionedpackage –online | where-object {$_.packagename –like “*windowscommunicationsapps*”} | remove-appxprovisionedpackage –online
•Re-install Mail, People and Calendar from the Store (green tile)

for people wanting to try new build and get bug fix

Indeed it should. I have a wireless headset so will enjoy talking to my Computer when it does work properly, if only as it would confuse the hell out of the missus! :p

Also, that's quite the bug, but hey, thanks for the fix, will remember to apply that at home.

Well the latest update has killed my test machine. Does not work properly with AMD cards, the Start menu shuts the machine down if you click on it, the icons are crap and make it look all 2d. Will leave it a couple of months and see if they can get there act together before i redownload it to try. With the state of it at the moment i would not have it even if its free.

And that's why I assume it was only released on the 'fast ring' i.e. the one where Microsoft already warned releases on that ring may end up unstable.

I shouldn't have updated my win 10 to latest, Virtualbox is even more messed up now, but at least I'm not alone :(

Windows 10 Build 10041 - Bridged Network Can't See Ethernet

https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=66682

I've spent so much time messing around with that I've no idea if there are any other new improvments or problems!

forgot to say, on the plus side, I found out that EaseUS who do some good free partitioning software, also do some free backup software which is Win 10 compatable, so you can backup to an image, and then restore using a boot disc.

Should be installing Windows 10 again tomorrow night (I won't tonight as I am busy).

I did have it installed to a VHD and had the VHD available as a boot option on the menu, but I'd been having trouble booting to this.

So, I tried to install Windows 10 to an actual partition. I have an SSD and a couple of HDDs in my PC. The SSD doesn't really have enough space to install Windows 8 and Windows 10 on, so I was going to install it to a new partition on one of the HDDs. It wouldn't install as none of my HDDs are apparently GPT partitioned, and they all have data on I cannot lose.

Ended up backing up one on to an external HDD, repartitioned it then copied the stuff I actually needed on that drive back to it, On the plus side, it freed a lot of space.

Haven't tried to install Windows 10 yet, but I plan to tomorrow.

Why am I not trying it on a VM? I have, and have been impressed. I want to see how it performs on a physical machine now, with drivers and everything to contend with.

Microsoft says pirated versions of Windows will also get a free upgrade to Windows 10

http://www.winbeta.org/news/microsof...medium=twitter

It seems they are backtracking now on the pirated versions or are they? Its all a bit confusing lol

“We have always been committed to ensuring that customers have the best Windows experience possible. With Windows 10, although non-Genuine PCs may be able to upgrade to Windows 10, the upgrade will not change the genuine state of the license. Non-Genuine Windows is not published by Microsoft. They seem to be saying it will upgrade but still be an "illegal" copy.

So you will go from an illegal windows 8 to an illegal windows 10. Which may be of benefit to microsoft - they may sneak in more piracy monitoring systems in, who knows

Sadly, I was. I have multiple HDDs and one SSD in my machine, and I was planning to install Windows 10 on one of the HDDs.

Everytime I ran the installer, it came up with an error when trying to install to any of the drive (even after I'd "cleaned" the drive in Diskpart and recreated the partitions using the Windows 10 installer. It seems the only solution is to unplug all the drives apart from the one I am installing on which, to be frank, is not going to happen.

Sounds like the problem is not that drive but something on another drive that's causing Windows to be unable to (safely) write a boot partition or boot loader. Isn't really new to Windows 10 (although the non-descript error may be)

TBH, I didn't think the problem was a windows 10 error, and even if it was, it's a beta. You can expect errors. They are, in some cases, part of the fun.

I might attempt the install again, when I've got time to pull the PC apart, and possibly back up and reformat all the drives.

On the Control Panel - All Control Panel Items click on the drop down arrow for View By and change from Category to Small Icons ~ that should sort you out. :)

Had a literal 5 minute look at 10 tonight. Apart from having the start menu back, not much different from 8 to my eyes. Also, as I have my laptop hooked up to a TV via HDMI, I want to keep the same setup going. Unfortunately, 10 doesn't let me do that. So back to 8 for now, and hope the final stable release is good enough for me to upgrade on a permanent basis.

I like the way he says Oh the start menu crashes and you have to restart it.

They have still not fixed the icons, the icons are naff to say the least.

Looks like i will have to wait for the final build and see if they get there finger out and fix the start bar and icons or i will be staying on 8.1 for now.

The problem as i see it is that the icons are bland with no colour, ever since windows 7 the icons have been reducing in form and are now just 2d icons which a 9 year old could have produced.. Those in windows 7 are far richer.

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion

Windows 10 to launch at the end of July, according to AMD

Microsoft surprised lots of people recently when the company announced it was aiming for a summer launch with the new Windows 10 operating system. But thanks to a slip-up from AMD CEO’s we now have an even clearer timeline for the launch.

While “summer” can be seen as a long time range with vaguely defined limits, offering Microsoft numerous chances to push the launch of the OS later in the year, we now have a much more precise launch window and its closer than many expected. According to AMD’s CEO Microsoft is looking to launch Windows 10 at the end of July.

The AMD exec was speaking on a recent financial conference call when she let slip the fact that Microsoft was looking to get the OS out in time for the “back to school” promotions. This, which fits in nicely with previous moves from the company, will ensure that Windows 10 has a high adoption rate out of the gate. Plus a massive launch of a new OS will be an exciting event for both partners and the public.

But, of course, there’s also another side to this story. Many observers were skeptical when Microsoft originally announced the summer launch window, and July launch is barely three months away. Given that many parts of the OS seem to still be in flux, there’s a big question over how well Windows 10 will run and how polished it will be at launch.

Depends on your standards for stable.

Some corporations won't consider an OS stable enough to use until it's been out for a year and the first service pack has been released.

As far as I was aware for consumers you'll only have Edge installed in Windows 10 by default.

So by making the logo look similar to IE it's immediately obviously that it's the browser - even if you only then use it to download Chrome / Firefox etc.

But it will be an issue where you're in a corporate environment and the deployment includes both.

2013 gives me eye strain so I forcefully uninstalled it at work. If I can't run 2010 at least on 10 I'll not be getting it.

Or more likely I'll figure out a way. Some versions of 2010 are deployed as virtual apps anyway.

Which theme were you using? The Dark Grey theme in 2013 is a lot better than the default white one, and is fairly similar to 'Silver' in 2010.

No it is the other way around Cimt, you stream from the Xbox to a compatible device.

There is a new streaming app for xbox one that let's you stream stuff from an Android or windows device to the console.

There is also streaming games from xbox to windows 10 but not sure when that launches.

Ah right that's cool then. I didn't realise that was a feature. It'd be interesting to try that out then.

I tried out the android to xbox streaming last night, I got it as part of the preview. I had to complete one of the surveys before I could get the app though. It uses miracast I think.

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion

Oh lovely. I bought a Roku for Miracast a while back, it's never worked properly with any Windows device.

I was also thinking of installing it, but everything is working just fine at the moment with Windows 8.1. Maybe I'll wait for something to go wrong before I give it a go. :)

If i install this and a new build comes out via windows update(i think?), will it then just easily update leaving all my apps and settings in place?

So i just dump the iso unpacked files on a bootable flash drive and boot with that and it will ask me if i want to clean install or keep my files?

Could I use my external hard drive, with over 800GB of free space on to install 10 onto?

Well, I downloaded 10074 (or whatever the latest build is) the other day, installed it on freshly created partition and it's working well now. A little slower than Windows 8, but I have Windows 8 installed on a 256gig SSD and Windows 10 on quote an old HDD, so it's not really a fair comparison.

It worked well enough that it picked up everything apart from my GFX and Sound Cards. A quick visit the Nvidia website sorted the problem with the GFX card and although they aren't advertised as compatible, the Windows 7/8 drivers for my sound card work fine.

I'm seriously thinking of replacing Windows 8 with it.

No. You can't boot off the USB drive just by dumping the files on it. You need to use the bootable USB creator - Microsoft provide one.

If you want to keep your files it's better to start the installer from within Windows and not boot off a separate device. The latter used to not allow upgrades at all.

Depends on how the drive is connected. Most USB drives would need a bit of tinkering to get Windows on it, eSATA et. al. would just work out of the box.

What are peoples views on how to install Windows 10, either a clean install or over my 8.1?

My problem is if i do a clean install how will MS know i own Windows 8.1 which gives me a free copy of Windows 10 as you can upgrade to Windows 10 RTM from the insider version of windows 10!

Upgrade from 8.1 if it all works awesome if it does not just recover to clean install. Back everything up take images to go back to if it all goes wrong. I use backupper :)

I liked it, but the one thing that made me scrap the dual install was the no connection to my TV. As someone who struggles with text at times, using the TV as a 1920 x 1080 monitor has really helped. Until 10 can ID my TV connected via HDMI then I will stay on 8.

I don't seem to be able to add items to the quick access menu easily, sometimes i get 1 item added and then i can't add anymore or it vanishes later on, i guess that is a bug and not a feature?
