Also seems a lot more responsive than before

Well done VM :)

Will it automatically start using the new update, or do you have to change a setting? Still not got it in Herts, hopefully tomorrow morning. Mind you, as I am working every day now until Monday would not be too fussed if it wasn't to launch until Monday morning in my area.

paultrademark 07-11-2013 06:38

Re: TiVo Update/Netflix

Starts using it after it reboots itself.

I was out at work and came in to the TiVo blasting audio through my surround system, glad I was out or it would have woke me up :O
I put it in standby overnight to kill the audio feed but with the new settings, you need to change what power saving mode you want.

Cardiff had the update over night, will look at netflix later, apperently you search for films on netflix through the normal search, which is pretty cool

Tend to avoid iplayer when possible, can be a bit dodgy well it was when I was using it last. That would have been back in July/August every it went near hd it was unwatchable. Might have to give it a try again.

Yes, give it another go. It did have problems last summer and you are right, some programmes were not watchable. It works well for me now.

Right had a play around on my parents TIVO box , the whole thing seems a lot more polished , am I imagining it or has the apps section changed , the icons for the apps seem to ping off the screen far nicer looking. The option to change the guide using green button from grid guide to live guide is nice , I actually prefer the Live grid if I'm honest. The Netflix app works as expected and loads quicker than people seemed to suggest , I also love the ability to play off Netflix direct from search all in all an excellent update.

Just found this myself a little while ago, and yeah myself (and more importantly SWMBO) prefers it too.. so that's that sorted, set on that for a while anyway! ;)

Had a clear out and re-order of my SL's today and it worked seamlessly without any issue, love the look of the new screen and the fact you can still watch live TV and it doesn't freeze up the TiVo.

In fact I've only seen the red ring once today and that was me hammering through menus to test the speed.

Most impressive for me is the new Planned Recordings screen, it just looks so much better and easier to read.

The font is definitely slightly different, also noticed a couple of other things am not sure where there before

  • In TV Guide, did we always have a Jump to Now option by pressing Stop?
  • In My Shows, when I go to my other TiVo at bottom, a big graphic of a TiVo appears
  • The TiVo icon has changed
  • The busy icon is now got gaps in it

A big well done to VM/TiVo for this update, now to start a thread for suggestions/ideas for the next one! ;)

TV Android app is next, and then we can say it's been a great year for VM

Absolutely Den , if I was nitpicking I'd like to be able to play a Netflix asset direct from search rather than the current implementation of being took to the asset in the Netflix app and having to select play again I'd like a similar method to playing iPlayer content from the backwards EPG , not sure if this is possible and its only a minor quibble.

I thought iPlayer took you to the app and you had to press play again as well?

Well I selected an iPlayer show today from the backwards EPG which then presented 'watch from On Demand' it then took me to the white spinning circle and begun playback.

Yes, it's in Parental Controls > Lock Apps & Games.

Also it means for those with kids, you can now restrict access to YouTube via the PIN

I have just noticed, when I started up Netflix on my Android phone while sitting in the lounge, that I had a very similar icon at the top that I see when I use the Youtube app in the house (i.e. the one that allows you send what's on the phone to the TiVo box and therefore the TV).

I was curious so I clicked the icon in the Netflix app and right enough it gives me the choice of either of my Tivo boxes and when I hit "play" on my phone it loads up the app on the TiVO box and whatever I have picked plays flawlessly. This is fantastic, means I can use my phone, instead of the remote, to search but watch it on the telly :D

Looks like this may be another reason to add a TiVo to a home network. Be interesting to know if whatever is playing is streamed through the TiVO's connection and doesn't come through the router to the phone and then to the TiVO.

This is amazing, I've managed to get my Smartphone, Tablet, Laptop, PC and my partners phone to just play direct to either TiVo I have and also my Smart TV from just one click/push of the little shared screen icon :D

What would be even better if you could then push the content from the 1st Screen Device such as TiVo or a Smart TV to your 2nd Screen device such as your laptop/tablet for if you wanted to go on the move!

Indeed it is. But what I will have to check over the weekend is what internet connection is being used to stream the content i.e. the non-traffic managed TiVO connection or my household broadband connection.

Best thing is that the App automatically opens up on the TiVo, even if I'm just watching live TV so no need to navigate to the TiVo's apps section.

I can see my LoveFilm subscription being cancelled this weekend.

Echo what a lot of folk are saying about the ability to search the Netflix app on a tablet (ipad in my case) then select to watch it on the TiVo. Much easier to search on the app than using the onscreen search on the TiVo.

I can see me using this nifty little feature a lot.

My only gripe is the UK Netflix content isn't fantastic compared to the US, it's not bad but it could be better IMHO.

It's all about rights. The UK version will improve over time. After all, it only launched in this country just over a year ago.

I'm busy this weekend but I could try it next weekend if you get me a couple of airline tickets.

.... and an ipad.

I'll use my free netflix trial to save you money. :D

I've already tried it and it will load the programme only if it's available in the UK Netflix.

Re: TiVo Update/Netflix

Using iPad Netflix app to pick a show the to play out on TiVo box is great.

However can I make the transition a bit slicker?
For instance I have to click ok and enter TiVo password every time the Netflix TiVo app opens. Also a menu pops up asking to choose Netflix of Netflix kids before finally loading my choice.

Is this standard or can I bypass this annoying procedure

Thanks

You can get rid of the TiVo PIN via Parental Controls > Lock Apps & Games

Not sure about the Netflix Kids screen though - that may have to wait until we get the app update with profiles.

Cheers BenMcr.
The profiles bit makes sense as available on iPad app but not showing on TiVo yet.
Surprised bout the pin as before update all parental controls off as no kids in the house. Guess need to go through it again.

Thanks for advice

Apps PIN protection is new, so I guess it's prudent to set it to block by default those app where kids could access inappropriate content

Just wondering because of the lack of profiles, if using the iPad feature, does it register what you are watching with the profile that is signed in on the iPad?

(can't check myself as waiting for update)

From Netflix support:

Devices that do not currently support profiles will use the account owner profile by default.

Thanks. I asked because I currently watch using my Apple TV which outputs Dolby Digital (orange light on my amp) but previously I had been using the Windows 8 app which output Dolby Digital Plus (blue light on my amp). Unfortunately the Windows app broke with the 8.1 update so I was hoping my TiVo would come to the rescue!

If the audio is the same 5.1 mix, would it make any difference whether it's DD or DD+ apart from how it's being decoded?

I don't know. I just assumed plus would be better (closer to Dolby TrueHD) otherwise what would be the point?

This might sound like a silly question but if I sign up to Netflix when it comes to my VM area (north London) next week can I use it on both my TiVo boxes for only one subscription price?

That's a excellent question John and hopefully Ben can give us a answer.

Yes, your netflix sub allows you to register up to 6 devices.

The basic streaming plan lets you use it simultaneously on 2 devices at once (there is a 4 simultaneous device plan for extra).

Each tivo box should count as one device.

The more I read of the VM/netflix deal, the better and better it seems. Looking forward to giving it a bash when it finally arrives in Cambs. Well done to all involved in starting/finishing this deal:-)

DD+ is a better codec and gives better quality sound. It is what Netflix use for 5.1 audio.

Some older AV amps can only decode regular DD 5.1 and and feeding them DD+ 5.1 will result in stereo output.

Apple TV outputs regular DD 5.1 I'm guessing it re encode the DD+ to output regular DD. Another possibility is that Netflix feeds the Apple TV with regular DD 5.1, given that Netflix produces around 90 different encodes of any one title for various devices and streaming quality options. I'm not sure which one it is.

The WDTV Live, which I use, sends DD+ via HDMI and regular DD via optical. This is useful to me as the lounge AV amp can decode DD+ but my older bedroom one can only decode regular DD. The WDTV must reprocess the DD+ to produce regular DD via the optical output.
