Also am sure that TiVo is different to the V+ as it uses the 10MB line in the box for all the apps and extras/interactive rather than the older method of the cable return path. Although its probably possible to still use it if needed.

But doesn't TIVO use the cable path return pth for Sky Sports red button? Rather than intenet based?

Yes as far as I know it does, which again proves that TiVo is capable of doing what the V+HD can do if the channel provider wishes it to ;)

Thought this may be worth reviving this thread for

I believe Connected Red Button will be a real step forward for audiences and will lay the foundations for new creative opportunities; new ways of thinking about television and radio programmes.

The first version of the Connected Red Button launches later this year. Look out for more details soon.
So I reckon that the BBC will create an IPTV version of the single Red Button stream that will remain after the others stop this month

What has that got to do with the BBC Red Button service on TiVo?

If you are talking about the alternate audio stream, that's works differently to the BBC Red Button apps - and has it's own thread

Nothing really. except the buttons are both red. Glad Freeview & Sky do not have the issues Virgin have around this sore point

Side point BBC fund S4C now perhaps both services will get worse on Virgin !!! as Clearly BBC in Wales rate Virgin as a low priority. I Player in Cardiff area is rubbish & that is down to them - is it not

I'm glad to see upcoming events on the forum here which says both teletext and another lost service are coming this year, but if Virgin genuinely doesn't have a compatible system with teletext I do wonder how they know it's even possible to resolve let alone when. I've also discovered text cropping up on more Freeview channels, albeit not news, and I've pretty much lost track of what's going on in the world now (not such a bad thing) as I'd relied on teletext for decades and don't waste money on newspapers which only have a few things worth reading in hundreds. Nowadays people say 'Do you know about...' and I have no idea, it's like being on permanent holiday abroad.

Do we think they'll really get it this year or was that said just to stop people leaving?

No digital service is compatible with 'teletext'. However some other services currently have more text on their interactive services than the BBC apps do on TiVo.

When that changes is down to the BBC - as is shown by the increasing options on the Sports app and the forthcoming Connected Red Button app

Teletext really :erm: That is a blast from the past. Did not know it was even suggested it was making a return. Seems old hat for Tivo :) How ever I recall I used a lot many moons ago. Before BB I guess:p:
Just seen Bens post guess that "kills" teletext as we know/knew it

"More" text? We have none at all so I'm not sure where you're coming from there. Secondly you are contradicting an earlier post (I'm not scrolling pages to find it) which blamed the software on the Tivo, which was the best in the world but American, so didn't 'fit' our text system. Now you are handing that back to the BBC, which is physically impossible as they have always had the identical Freetext service as it was introduced with Freeview. As we do not receive the Freeview channels then whatever other goodies came along with them were also absent, and secondly that can't be true as even ITV still have advertising on their teletext service like they did when they dropped the news from the analogue text.

"Teletext really That is a blast from the past."

No, that's Ceefax. What do you call news available on the red button on Sky and Freeview in text form? I thought teletext was the generic term, is there another one?

There is text news in the BBC News app

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/help-17655000

Quote:

Should viewers want to read text articles they can press Up again from here [the info/video panel] to see a list of categories. These can be navigated/selected with Up/Down/OK.

When viewers choose a category the carousel will be updated with text content.

When viewers choose an article it will be displayed in the foreground while video continues to play in the background. A smaller info panel on the right shows information about the content shown in the video layer.
Quote:

There isn't a single 'text' system. Freeview and Freesat use one system, Sky use another, and the V boxes use a different one again. The BBC wrote the services on each of the those systems to look the same, but they are technically different.

What TiVo couldn't originally do is the whole concept of 'Red Button' but that was introduced last year and updated at the beginning of this, and Sky have been using it for their Sports interactive service for months

Quote:

teletext was the generic term for analogue text system. The generic term for Digital services has become 'Red Button' but that covers multiple technologies

Definite development, I can now access the news index, but when I select a category it just sent me back to the video clip. But I expect the presence of it implies a step towards written content. Is it a transitional stage or have I missed a step, or is it faulty?

As far as red button's concerned there is still another text button on the Tivo remote, so was clearly built to do that as well. And finally Freeview has text/red button on non-BBC channels, any chance we'll ever get any as well?

There are text articles in the BBC News App but its not obvious they are there or how to get at them.

Load the app from the apps section or the red button on a bbc tv (or radio) channel, press up to get the bar with the video thumbnails, then up again to get a drop down menu of categories which you can then browse to text stories. More instructions at the link below

I think you need to keep going 'Up'.

Quote:

Actually the 'Text' button is specific to the VM version of TiVo. It's not on the US version. I think it was put there as 'in case' as it's on the V box remotes too - but has never done anything Virgin related. However if you've set up the remote to control your TV, then 'Text' is input select

Quote:

You mean like you can on NatGeo and Sky Sports? For the most part 'Red Button' is just a way to access interactive services connect to a channel. TiVo has a dedicates apps section - so there are apps there from PBS America, Cartoon Network and CNBC - which would normally be classed as 'Red Button'

I went to do exactly the same thing as well haveing recently just got my new TiVo box.

So there is NO interaction with ANY BBC programmes at present only the NEWS, SPORT or I-PLAYER option. Is there a time frame as to when this connectivity will be available on TiVo?:(

I no see no reason why VM won't be doing it. Up till recently S4C were adamant that VM couldn't do it not wouldn't do it, so I wonder how much engagement there was from them?

I'm sure it'll be on the list of things to add to TiVo

Also BBC Red Button and the alternate audio stream for S4C are completely different technically so the S4C thing is irrelevent to this thread

Can someone please explain how this RED BUTTON works on VM, and it is frustrating.

Watching the games on SS4 it stated that you could watch the different games, go to the channel (Celtic), try to go back to the Chelsea game, Red Button doesn't work.

Went to SS2 and did exactly the same as that is what my box was telling me, did that and found that l couldn't go back to the channel l wanted on the red button, so l had to keep going back to the guide and do it all again - driving me nuts.

Daniel Danker, the BBC’s general manager of on demand, could not say whether the Connected Red Button will be available to Sky subscribers, because BSkyB's is less "open" to outside content providers than Virgin Media.

WOW! Mr. Danker should read the comments posted on the Coming Soon thread. I don't think any Virgin customer would agree with that statement.

Red Button events on Virgin Tivo

Right now Connected Red Button does not currently feature eTV (enhanced TV) streams on the Virgin TiVo service. While users can already enjoy live coverage and highlights from a range of Sporting events on the service, we are working to extend this capability to a wider range of events, on and off-schedule content during 2013.

Used the Red button late last night - Forgot to set Silent witness part two ( normally just watch) It was SO much better than it was when I last tried prior to Christmas as I recall. Well done BBC. Its nothing to do with Virgin ( Or so I was told before)

Yes indeed you are correct in your assumption as its the BBC that has full responsibilty with its Red Button.

It is a very good menu system, shame anytime I try to use the iPlayer it just stutters constantly.

Some details about the Glastonbury coverage, including Connected Red Button coverage

http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/lat...bury-2013.html

Quote:

On TV, three additional red button streams will offer more content and highlights from the festival, and the BBC’s Connected Red Button service available on Virgin Media’s TiVo service will bring viewers all the live streams and on-demand video seamlessly on their TV.
Just to make it clear, this is from the Guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2013...al-glastonbury

Quote:

Six streams of live music from six different festival stages will be available on mobile, tablets and PCs, as well as Virgin Media homes with a "connected" red button. A seventh roving camera will follow the BBC's presenters in the build-up to the festival on Friday.

Springwatch was available as an extra stream today on Tivo so the BBC are doing their bit at last.

Just in from work, and every live game from the Wimbledon home page is unwatchable.

Re: BBC Red Button

Just found all the Red Button channels 991, 992, 993, etc ie without going through the red button.

Quality is very good

Why is this not advertised ? Why does it say "Red Button" rather than "Got to Ch 99x"

I take it your watching via the BBC sports app if its any consolation its the same using the BBC Sports app on my PS3 , even when you select the HD option the PQ is awful nothing natural looking about it , I'm afraid these Internet streams the BBC has adopted just aren't up to the task of delivering decent PQ when it comes to sports action.

Just posted a message on the Virgin Media forum and the BBC website about the poor picture quality through the Tivo BBC Sport app of the Wimbledon feeds. Ughh.. they are eye blurringly awful to watch. Are they running at 15 fps or something? Technically horrible.

That's because its delivered in a different way , try going into the BBC Sport app and selecting a live match then change the setting to HD and you'll see what we mean. ;)

Re: BBC Red Button

would only do that for the games not on the streams ;-)
