Sooner the better for me - they are unlikely (if at all) to release it for my galaxy s2 before the s3 ;)

Ordered my (work) S3 today.

I waited until the iPhone5 was announced, for comparison - the S3, for my requirements, was the best choice.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3

Sorry but android also has panorama mode and the S3 features a quad core CPU, front 1.9 Mega pixel camera and most other features can be accessed through various apps. The Sumsung one makes a better point of features the iPhone can't actually do.

Also its not cheap plastic but a gorilla glass 2 front and the rear is polycarbonate. Very strong and very light.

qasdfdsaq 19-09-2012 01:18

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3

I remember HTC doing the same thing with the One X vs. Galaxy S3 somehow stating having a much better hardware chip but lack of a "Beats" software equalizer on the S3 made it inferior to HTC's offering.

And some dribble about polycarbonate vs "ordinary plastic" on the S3 while it is in fact made out of the same "plastic" as the HTC...

all the apple junkies love the 5 cuz its slightly different to the last 2 was always going to sell well lol

S Voice actually works bit of a shock for me as the rest have been poor up to now . Still totally stock on my 3 not even bothered to root it just works like a treat

I played with an S3 last week and although it's pretty good and impressive in parts, nothing available on the Google market helps with my ADHD as what I can find in Apple's App Store. I had android-powered phones for 3 years before I went to Apple so I have a great deal of respect for them. But my 4s with iOS6 at present cannot be beaten.

I've found that there are loads - but regarding ADHD the ones on the iPhone just seem to work more efficiently.

Queues are just caused by supply restriction for PR purposes i.e make people preorder and queue up otherwise they'll 'run out' of handsets

Can understand it for the first or second gen iPhone, because Apple may have not made enough, but at this stage it's done on purpose

So you won't be using the Apple Maps feature then. ;)

Well there's no doubt that Apple Maps is a huge disappointment but....I used it for my satnav the other day and it got me to my destination fine

Google's navigation is clearly better though, however the Copilot app I have on my iphone beats them both.

OTA update for this phone is now out. Looked on forums and i think its update for JB. One of the forums takes me to this page http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?p...ype=1#firmware and that is JB AFAIK. I started to download the update but if its JB then i will loose Sky Go so cancelled it. Anyone updated it and if so is it JB?

EDIT: I am on O2 and did SW update in settings and it finds and update.

I have looked and the OTA download is less than 300MB but the FW from the link i posted is over 700MB, does this mean the OTA DL is JB or just an ICS Update?

Stephen 25-10-2012 13:16

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3

The OTA IS JB. I installed it yesterday.

It even tells you its Jelly Bean before you download it.

OTA updates are always smaller as it will only contain the updated system files. Where as the full file downlaod will probably contain the full OS.

My phone keeps trying to auto download the update. When its on wifi it starts downloading and so far i have seen it in time to stop it. On 3G it trys it but says needs wifi. Why is it trying to auto update?

Have you tried a hard reset.
Quote:

Note – Make sure you backup all your application and data before hard reset your Samsung Galaxy S3 (if you still can). Use Samsung Kies, titanium Backup or CWM to do the backup. How to factory data reset Samsung Galaxy S3? There are 3 ways to do so. Performing a factory data reset via settings
  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Select Back up and reset.
  3. Click on Factory data reset ~ Reset all settings and delete all data on device.
  4. Select Reset device.
  5. Finally, select Erase everything.
Performing a factory data reset using phone buttons
  1. Turn off Samsung Galaxy S3.
  2. Press and hold down Volume Up + Home + Power buttons at the same time.
  3. Release all buttons when you see SGS3 Logo.
  4. Android system recovery will be loaded then.
  5. Select wipe data/factory reset. (use Volume buttons to go up or down, select with Power button)
  6. Select Yes — delete all user data.
  7. Finally, select reboot system now.
Performing a factory format using dialpad
  1. Warning ~ no turning back after key in.
  2. Bring up dialpad.
  3. Key in *2767*3855#
  4. Finally, SGS3 will be rebooted and factory format.
That’s all. Enjoy your new fresh Samsung Galaxy S3.

can you get into download mode?

Have you removed the battery waited a while then after putting it back together tried to get into recovery mode?

If you can not get into recovery or download mode a stock rom is not going to help you

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3

I've found Android to be surprisingly robust myself, since my first Android handset (I've now had 5) I've not once, ever, had a situation where I had to hard reset it for any reason, every error, bug, or fault it had come up with could be fixed without a reset (though in some cases, needing ADB)

My S3 certainly restarts itself a lot less than my S2.

Stephen 04-11-2012 19:26

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3

This is my 4th android phone and never had any issues before.

Well it's dead, reinstalled firmware and Odin stated it completed ok. However it starts to reload and I get the android on screen with the spinning thing in its belly, but then it restarts again and again on a loop.

Need to take it in to the store I purchased it from. Possibly a piece of hardware has failed.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3

My phone has just updated to jellybean, one useful feature before the upgrade was the quick settings bar for switching on off wifi, gps, sound etc. One button is now missing which is the notification button, this was useful for turning off the sounds to email and text when phone had to be left of for alarm clock to work, does anyone know where this has now gone or is it replaced with new button called blocking mode, if so how do you setup to mute email and text temporary.

Stephen 05-11-2012 13:07

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3

It's not missing. It's now called blocking mode and is more in depth. You can block the led from flashing, and calls and texts. Or a combination. Also possible to add exceptions so certain numbers can get through. Also possible to set for certains times of the day.

qasdfdsaq 05-11-2012 14:03

I updated to JB yesterday and i like it. Dont see many differences but i can see a few changes. I have turned off Google Now so i save battery. I had some issues with Direct Call and Wifi issues while i was on ICS and at moment now im on JB it seems all ok

I also found the secret Android game from the settings.

To do this go to settings > about device > and where it says Android Version 4.1.1 tap it 4 times really quick you then get a picture of a JB with a face on it, press and hold that and a game comes up where you have to flick the JBs off the screen

Is there a fault with the copy and paste function, I'm trying to copy text from an email so I hold onto screen and you get two cheese shaped pointers, which are supposed to be beginning and end of what you want copied, but both pointers keep moving, it will stay on a line but will not stay at beginning of text and end of text, am I doing something wrong or is there an easier way of copying text in an email

Jimmy-J 01-12-2012 17:05

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3

This might be silly question, but have you tried moving the little cheese wedges to hi-light the text you want to copy?

I cannot get the start pointer to stay, if I put it at the beginning of the sentence and drag the end pointer down the start pointer then moves down also, the text though is being highlighted, it does not want to highlight the whole text, it is missing the first line of the sentence.

---------- Post added at 16:25 ---------- Previous post was at 16:15 ----------

I think its a bug, I've tried another sentence, and each time the start pointer drops down a line and starts to highlight one line lower than original highlight , move the pointer back up and both move.

That seems to be a known bug - a work colleague had the same issue, and the advice is apparently to either do a factory reset or root it so you can get to a file to delete it (as it's a corruption of that file which causes the issue)

Dont fancy any of them tbh. Ive only had the bug once and been able to copy and paste since. Ill just live with it me thinks. Hopefully wont be to long before we have to wait for 4.2 and hopefully it will be fixed in that version

There is plenty of other options. Depends on the phone you want. There is the HTC One X for example. Ive you want a phontablet then there is always the Galaxy Note 2

I've had the note 2 for a few months and it's a great phone, a little big for some, but you do get used to it.

I already have an HTC Sensation which i am happy with but i don't really want another 1 and i don't want a tablet phone, personally 4.3in phone would be ideal so i am reluctantly going upto 4.7in as that seems the way they're going now and it is a free upgrade so i may as well take it.

Probably will go for it with it being free.

It would have to live in my pocket at work as i wear a cleanroom suit so a phone/tablet that size is out of the question.

I really wish the S3 was the same size as my Sensation.

I need it to be on EE but they don't have it and if they did i bet it wouldn't be a free upgrade.

Also not sure about an LG phone. :)

The One X has a much better screen but dreadful battery life (unless you leave it idle all the time, at which point it outlasts the S3 by a factor of 3, but who gets a £500 smartphone to leave it idle all the time?). Also a generally all-round better user interface, though the hardware performance, other than the screen, isn't quite as good.

Ordered the blue GS3 yesterday, looking forward to getting it now, although i had to phone EE for a micro sim, so i hope that comes quickly as well as a leather pouch for it. :)

Am i right in thinking Jelly Bean is officially available for it now?
