Yeah, they seem to have a much better selection of movies in the US so I guess that it's just a matter of time before they get more big names on board, although I think that Sky have the rights that Netflix will require in many cases so that may take a while.

Maybe Sky could implement something similar to iTunes extras where they secure exclusive behind the scenes or making of content in order to stand out from the crowd.

Exciting times for the UK movie delivery market..... :D

Sky has today made significant strides towards broadening its video on-demand offering by agreeing deals to make BBC iPlayer and ITV Player available to around 5m of its satellite TV homes.

The catch-up TV services operated by the BBC and ITV will launch this year in Sky Anytime+, the video on-demand platform launched by Sky in 2011, which delivers content over an internet connection in Sky+ boxes rather than over satellite.

ITV shows such as Prime Suspect and Lewis will be offered on Sky Anytime+ from tomorrow, accessible through the main Sky Anytime+ menu, as well as a new dedicated ITV Player section.
Quote:

Sky has been able to offer on-demand access to some BBC shows through its partnership with UKTV, the pay-TV joint venture between BBC Worldwide and US firm Scrips Networks interactive.

However, the broadcaster was unable to offer the full BBC iPlayer service due to a lack of agreement with the corporation over the process of syndication of on-demand content.

But after a change in the BBC's syndication policy last November, Sky has secured access to the iPlayer platform, which racked up more than 2 billion programme requests last year across all devices and platforms where it is available.

"We want customers to get the best out of their Sky subscription and Anytime+ is a great way to give them more control and choice over how they enjoy TV," said Jeremy Darroch, Sky's chief executive.

"We already know how popular Sky+ is and how it puts customers back in charge of their TV viewing. Anytime+ builds on that control and it's no wonder we've seen such strong demand for it

Great news about Sky Anytime rolling out to all ISP's.

Only about 4 months ago I fired off a "strongly" worded Email to Mr Darroch saying how my neighbour on Virginmedia could access Sky Anytime but I as a long time customer couldn't

Sky replied with a 6 month half price Skyworld and reducing my HD pack to £5 a month. I guess a few other customers may of had a similar opinion to me and sent of a complaint.

Sky has reported a boost in second-half 2011 profits due to strong sales across its TV, broadband and landline packages.

The company, which was the subject of an aborted takeover bid by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation last year, generated pre-tax profit of £601m in the six months to December 31, 2011, up 16% on the same period in 2010.

Sky sold 772,000 products over the period, although only 100,000 were taken by new subscribers.

Average revenue per user (ARPU), a key metric for analysts, was £544, up by £8 on the same period in 2010, but the rate of customers leaving Sky was 9.6%.

Sky recognised that customers were feeling the pinch of the touch economic conditions.

"It has been a strong first half with progress on all fronts. While these are tough times for many consumers, our customers are staying loyal and more households continue to join us," said Sky chief executive Jeremy Darroch

Long-awaited broadband TV venture YouView looks set to take a significant amount of Sky's market share, according to a fund manager who has recently sold his stake in the satellite broadcaster.

Speaking to the Independent, the investment expert said YouView - which is backed by the likes of BT, the BBC, ITV and TalkTalk - could take "some good share" of Sky's customers.

"There's Freeview, a hard drive, catch-up TV and football if you want it. All that for maybe £20 a month," they commented.

YouView will allow customers to sign up for Sky Sports on a standalone basis, rather than as part of a subscription package, as is the case with Sky and Virgin Media

Mad Men Season 5 comes to its new home on Sky Atlantic on March 27, just two days after it airs in the US.

Set in 1960s New York, Mad Men follows the lives of the ruthlessly competitive men and women of Madison Avenue advertising, specifically fledgling agency Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce.

The award-winning series stars Jon Hamm as the enigmatic and flawed Don Draper, alongside Elisabeth Moss, January Jones, Vincent Kartheiser, Christina Hendricks and John Slattery.

Season 4 ended with Don proposing unexpectedly to his secretary Megan, and Joan (Hendricks) and Roger (Slattery) reigniting their affair, resulting in Joan falling pregnant.

'There are some new people,' says creator, writer and exec producer Matthew Weiner of the fifth series. 'Changes have happened off screen, and the audience will have to catch up with that. Even though Don ended up making this overture to Megan, and the audience felt sort of peculiar about it, so did the people in the office. That's something that we play on.'

The series debuts with a double bill, followed by an unbroken run of all 13 episodes, and customers will be able to watch Mad Men on Sky Go on iPads, selected smartphones and laptops at no extra cost.

Sky 1 picked up the coveted channel of the year prize at last night’s Broadcast Awards – as ITV drama stole the show.

A commitment to spend £600m a year and shows including Mad Dogs, Got to Dance and Trollied helped Sky 1 beat BBC2, BBC3, ITV1, ITV2 and Sky News to the top prize.

Judges praised the channel for a “content revolution”, which assisted in raising its viewing share by 13% year-on-year.

The only feature I would like at the moment is for there to be a bar at the top of the EPG and then if a show is set to record, the bar over the time period for the scheduled recording to be red (or any colour for that matter).

MTV upgrades to HD

Quote:

MTV UK is to launch a high definition channel and replace existing MTVNHD with MTV Live.

Entertainment channel MTV, which shifted up the Sky EPG to #126 last year, will start broadcasting in HD from 13 February.

It will offer subscribers the chance to see shows in HD including the second series of Geordie Shore, Teen Mom and 16 & Pregnant.

The Viacom-owned broadcaster will also rebrand MTVNHD as MTV Live on 23 April.

The new channel, which remains on the #358 slot on the Sky EPG, will continue to air MTV’s original international productions and be extended to include footage of live performances from events such as MTV World Stage, MTV Unplugged and Isle of MTV.

It will be available to both SD and HD viewers and extends the reach of MTV Live, which already airs in 30 countries.

Viacom UK’s managing director David Lynn said the move was to “enrich our audience’s viewing experience”.

“Both of these moves support our long-term commitment to developing, packaging and delivering the highest-quality, music and creative content across all platforms,” he said.

I see you have a Sky+HD box , so if your just wanting to swap boxes it's usually 149.00 plus 15.00 self install fee

Or

To add one as a multiroom box having a Sky+HD it's £49.00 + £60.00 install then £10.25 a month.

I can, Infact I am using Sky Anytime+ on my Virginmedia connection. Problem is at the moment you need Sky broadband before they will activate Anytime+.

It word perfectly though, so its already opened up to other providers but currently they won't activate it.

Sky teases details of Sky Race Contol F1 iPad app and interactive services

Quote:

The Sky Sports F1 HD team has hinted at some of the features it hopes to include in its official Formula One iPad application, Sky Race Control. And the highlight so far is that it will allow viewers to watch the multiple live video streams on their tablet devices normally restricted to Sky's own red button service.

Sky Race Control is the banner the company will be using across all of its interactive services, red button and internet included, with the website also to give F1 fans the chance to look at alternative camera angles, on-board cameras and extra information, both video and otherwise.

Speaking to Pocket-lint at the impressive new Sky Studios complex in Isleworth, Martin Turner, executive producer of F1 HD, explained that a massively improved interactive channel line-up is something that Sky can provide that the BBC couldn't.

"Technically speaking, our multi-screen offering will be the biggest change," he said. "We will be offering [viewers] a choice of on-board cameras that they’ve never had before. We’ll be offering a live Pit Channel. Sky will be covering the pits as its own channel, to see what’s going on there because there’s always something going on in the pits even without the cars being there."

When my installation is all done and dusted tomorrow. How do I choose which box i'd like to remote record to or is there a toggle on the Sky+ apps allowing me to choose 1TB box or Sky+HD box? That way if both tuners are in use on my main box I could still record as planned on one of the others. :)

Thanks again MM, looks like what I was after although it's a slightly long way to do it.

Thanks for the heads up on Homeland as well by the way, I've already got my eye on Tuesdays showing of Luck but Homeland is one that would have slipped the net. :)

Post on the Sky help forum and tell them , I agree a toggle option would be much more user friendly. They encourage feedback on the Sky help forum so your suggestion could well be included in a future update. We desperately need some new posters on here it's always me , you or LexDiamond :) come on folks we don't bite.

All installed and working a treat! The engineer was very polite, tidy, professional and the whole installation took around 3 hours.

I'm loving the speed of the 1tb box, it makes my TiVo box look very sluggish I've not had chance to test the speed of the other boxes yet though. Having all the iPhone & iPad apps up and running is a bonus, Sky really do make super slick apps. Now all I need to do is wait for the Anytime content to populate and for Anytime+ to be opened up to my 50mb connection. :D

Thanks Den, I thought the same when I got TiVo installed. It was much faster than the V+ box that it replaced but this 1TB Sky+HD box is like the same improvement again. It really is blazing fast going through the guide etc.

Cheers MM, it certainly looks like being another great year for Sky! I'm really looking forward to the EPG revamp, F1HD & Sky Atlantic as well as the Zeebox implementation :)

There is no doubting the fact a Sky box is considerably faster than a TiVo box.

The zeebox intergration is going to be brilliant,.

Den the TIVO is a good box no doubt , that why Sky feel the need to upgrade their EPG and feature list.

It sounds like you're really enjoying your Sky lol, An don't forget your 1Tb Sky box actually has a 1.5Tb drive in it. Thats 1Tb just for you and 500Gb for Anytime downloads.

Unlike the VM 1tb TiVo which only has 1Tb drive so it can be filled by TiVo without you recording anything an as VM use an older compression you'll be able to record twice as much on your Sky box.

Glad your enjoying it so far.

I love the never miss feature. I just check my emails on my phone and then just use the app to set the recording. IMO the best of the Sky features particularly as the app had alternative viewing times so I always set my recordings at the alternative times.

Yeah, I does seem like a killer feature that Sky are under marketing. Knowing the Sky advertising team, I can't see it staying this way for much longer!

It would definitely prove a great addition to the Sky+ & Sky Movies apps.

Thanks again for the heads up MM. Do Sky have any other hidden gems that I'm missing out on? :)

It could be integrated into the Sky Movies app right now and replace the fairly useless Shortlist option.

BSkyB's internet TV plan is brilliant, a rare example of perfect timing

In essence, Sky is doing with its television output what Amazon does with the Kindle, taking ownership of the conduit

On the internet, it's always better to jump before you're pushed. That's the clear lesson from John Naughton's new book, From Gutenberg to Zuckerberg, which points out – among other things – that "on the internet, disruption is a feature, not a bug". In other words: change just keeps on coming; and if you wait to be pushed rather than leaping into the flood of change, you'll generally find yourself face down in the mud with people running over your back.

Equally, though, timing matters. Ten years ago I recall mobile phone companies that had just spend billions on 3G bids demonstrating to journalists how the latest handsets could stream TV direct to their mobiles. It was great, if you wanted to watch something that looked like the first moon landing viewed on a TV across a road. TV on mobiles didn't take off; music did.

But now we have the bandwidth and processing power to give us video capability all over the place. And what I think is the most impressive case of jumping before being pushed in the media ecosystem recently: BSkyB's announcement that it's going to launch an internet TV service that will let you get content from it on an ad hoc basis, no matter whether you use Sky's broadband or pay for Sky in your home.

In essence, Sky is doing with its TV output what Amazon does with the Kindle: saying "we don't mind how you view our content. We just want to be the conduit so we benefit from your attention." Video-on-demand (VoD) for anyone prepared to pay, not just existing users of its pay TV service
