We all know what a massive organisation ESPN is, but I would have thought that if they really interested in getting more UK football rights they would have been in for them to fill out there live action from the UK.
It will be interesting to see now if they will do battle with Sky for Premier League rights when they come up for auction in a couple of Years I am now more sceptical than I was, IMO they will carve the rights up between them so they do not pay to much.

I am even more sceptical or is it worried that they aren't as interested in the UK market than I hoped they were. I just hope they don't pull out and we lose ESPNA.

The press release does say the agreement included access to Sky programming over VM's tv on demand service, so that must be using the same format as all other vod shows.

The only special measures needed are integrating Sky's red button service onto cable, but you'd know more about that than me.:)

Considering the press release was from June last year, it sure is a long wait for the Sky stuff. But the addition of Sky Arts HD shows progress, finally!

ITV Digital's bid for Football League football was the straw that broke the camel's back. It was a rather big straw but they had many serious problems, none more so than it is quite likely that more people stole their services than actually paid for them!

They came up with the genuis idea of providing dirt cheap pre paid boxes that required no identification checks, people just slapped their own cards in them or merely pocketed a DTT receiver for the extra free channels. They eventually saw the error of their ways but maybe it was a bit late!

So is that right enough that Virgin are getting Sky Anytime? Would be a bit of a coup (is that how you spell it) if they did and it included movies.

I hope so, that would be great!!!

The quote from the press release does state:

"Virgin Media will make available through its on-demand TV service a range of content from Sky's basic and premium channels"

We'll be treated to non-stop Ross Kemp and hopefully a selection of movies and sport.

I'm expecting this to arrive in just under 3 weeks along with the red button facility and SKY Arts 1 & 2 HD.

Is Virgin bringing out a new EPG at some point? I remember a few years go seeing a new style epg online with like boxes across the tv screen with channel logos etc and it looked very cool, it said if they got the go ahead it would be out in 2011.

Has that EPG been scrapped now for this new tivo style? and will that be added to all newer boxes at some point?

thanks

If you are thinking about the red epg that was going about i think that they have used this for the TIVO epg.

New EPG is on TiVo, but there is talk of the V-HD getting the TV Guide from TiVo. Nothing further announced though.

Because they are too old and technically incompatible with TiVo, nothing more or less than that. Same applies for the SD V Boxes

The V HD box was designed to be upgradeable to TiVo if required as it was introduced after the TiVo agreement was signed

Not really. The V+HD isn't compatible with the new software. Upgrade incentives and promotions should follow to move the customer base off V+, but in the mean time it is fully supported by VM.

they are obsolete in my eyes, same box and same menus etc as the tv drive box that i had with telewest around 8 years ago, boxes are horribly slow, prone to freezing and failed recordings, just looking forward to gettin a tivo box which works properly :)

thats just a polite way to say obsolete !!!

regardless of the so called support there is nothing new happening to the platform in terms of new EPG, platform updates ect which means VM have all but washed their hands of the platform.

sure the new channels will come but other than that thats it. its hardly full support more like legacy support for an obsolete platform at best and the only reason VM will keep this limited legacy support is so they dont loose money to people refusing to pay a fortune to be move to the TiVo platform and VM having to subsidise the move.

Not true. Virgin are still working on updates to the existing platform where appropriate - for example the Sky Sports Red button services

But as the existing platform is extremely limited in what more it can do, you aren't going to see any major changes.

Yeah I thought that was the whole point of TiVo, the old Liberate platform is stretched as far as possible as it is?

That's possibly because the contract ends soon with Liberate doesn't it ?

It's all part of the same thing

Liberate is old tech, which means it's limited in what Virgin can do with it, so no iPlayer app etc

Which is why TiVo was selected for the new platform, which in turn means it can do new funky things the older boxes can't

Just a quick one Ben , on the TIVO thread someone sarcastically stated can't every box run iplayer , I think I'm right in saying here that my Sky+HD box can't run the iplayer app is that correct ?

Actually I have no idea. Theorectically the Sky+HD box could access iPlayer content as it can be connected to router (as is required when you have Sky BBI and Anytime+). However I don't know whether it could run a iPlayer Flash app like TiVo could, or whether Sky would need to get a specific app development for it's firmware platform

I see your point but VM have to move on , how many customers would VM lose if they kept V+ for years to come.

I think it's Sky wanting it integrated in their platform so may not actually be incompatible

It's a big one up for TIVO anyway.

It's only obsolete insofar as it won't do the new 'connected' things. But all connected functionality requires new equipment if the current equipment is more than a year old.

My Panny BD35 Blueray player is obsolete from your perspective, because it can't get connected content like my Sony BD370 can. Panasonic have no plans to upgrade the BD35 to get connected content, they expect you to buy a new model if you want connected TV functionality.

The BD35 still plays bluerays though and does the job it was designed for; If I want the new stuff, I need new equipment. Same applies to PVRs.

I had hardly any issues with my Samsung V+ box apart from missing a few endings off ESPN , just the capacity wasn't great for recording HD.

Maybe not Flash specifically, but I'd suspect the Sky+HD box to be powerful enough to take an implementation of the iPlayer app from the BBC.

Problem is, Sky don't want this, they want an approach where they just drop the content into their existing infrastructure (not unlike the legacy iPlayer VM have), and the BBC Trust have decided that is a no-no moving forward as the BBC will be controlling the availability and syndication of the content (meaning providers can't just take Top Gear and Eastenders and bin what they deem to be "unpopular")

Agreed. Space is an issue, but everything else is fine.
I once had a problem where the box reset randomly and got stuck on a code (usually one of the ones that appear on boot). A simple unplug and plug in solved it.

Fujitsu unveils plans to bring fibre to 5 million homes and businesses in rural Britain

London, 13th April 2011 — Fujitsu, one of the world’s largest technology and communications companies, today announced plans to work in collaboration with Virgin Media, TalkTalk and Cisco to deliver next generation internet services to 5 million homes in rural Britain.

http://www.fujitsu.com/uk/news/pr/fs_20110413.html

I know the press release only talks about Broadband but with Virgin Media's collaboration, does this mean that they will also use this for TV services?

Good if they do! :)

It's not as simple as that.
The boxes have to have a chipset that is capable of running said player.

It's not like a PC where you have the processing grunt to do whatever you feel like, these are specialist chipsets with highly specialised instruction sets that do a limited amount of tasks extremely well, and that's about it. Everything they do is hardware accelerated, whereas a PC you can just do it in software.

If the chipset the boxes run don't support flash then no amount of code dropping will bring them flash support.

You know schemes like this actually annoy me.

Why the hell does rural Britain need FTTH, and why the hell should rural Britain end up with subsidised internet access that is FAR greater than what city dwellers will get?

Sure bring them decent access in line with what most cities can get, but FTTH capable of 1gbps? Give me a break.

I doubt most urban areas will see FTTH for a long long time. Hey maybe when the countryside has it the government can throw some money at catching the cities up with the rural areas!

I'm aware of that, but do you know what exactly is inside the Sky+HD box?

The original TiVo took everyone by surprise by what it was capable of doing.

And they wouldn't necessarily need Flash support. There is already a BigScreen implementation of iPlayer that doesn't use Flash - the interface is HTML and the video is h.264 - that could easily distribute one of the many formats the BBC have on the backend in storage for each video asset - I'd suspect the box will have the decoder to play one of them.

Getting HTML on there is almost as bad too, the thing with modern HTML interpreters/engines is that an amazing amount of work goes into them just to make them run at a decent speed with full compatibility on decent hardware. Something like a STB is going to have a hard time hitting what we have come to see as the norm without a lot of work and investment. To see my point give the PS3 browser a go.

What I was getting at is that the TiVo boxes were (and still are) pretty powerful and could be changed to add functionality because the hardware could support it

Quite unlike a normal STB where the hardware is designed to do a specific job, so adding new functions requires a new box.

Yeah there is no point specing out a box with a powerful chipset if you don't need it, it just runs up costs (and as far as Sky goes) cuts into the profits you make from the box sale.

Plus you have to bear in mind there's multiple versions of the Sky HD box out there, all with different chipsets. Whilst some may be able to support it there's no guarantee all will.

As I usually say in these situations, define "plenty". I reckon that barely 1% of VM's userbase are regular forum users. (Yes, 75k members of CF but not all posting in here, for example.)

Also, people who post to complain are a self-selecting group. If all those with no problems posted too, I wonder which would be the bigger group? ;)

Yes, VM have some problems in some areas and it would be stupid to suggest otherwise; which is why I never have. But are they as widespread as some people like to suggest? Only VM know for sure.

Thanks

There you go Muppetman11, there's no need to worry! It's nice of you to be concerned though. :D

Heres what's coming soon

Contention issues at 6pm on as more and more take TIVO and faster BB speeds LOL :D

But have you considered the reduced contention on VOD with TiVo iPlayer using the broadband connection instead?
