http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011...5-to-sign-deal

Quote:

Richard Desmond's Channel 5 is poised to sign a £200m five-year deal to bring back Big Brother following months of tortuous negotiations between his company and the programme's producer, Endemol.

There were hopes that the deal could have been announced this week, but last-minute legal wrangles continue to delay the announcement of a plan that has been mooted since Desmond bought the channel last summer.

Because of the time taken by the talks, the earliest Big Brother could come back on air is understood to be August. A three-week run of Celebrity Big Brother is expected to be followed by a run of Big Brother into the autumn and winter.

Desmond is hoping he could lure Cheryl Cole into hosting Big Brother – an effort fuelled by this morning's Daily Star splash "Cheryl's New B Bro Babe" – but the star's camp totally dismissed the public overtures.

Why would the fact that the Daily Star (A Desmond owned newspaper) reports that Cheryl Cole is interested in presenting BB fuel Desmond's efforts?

That would be like me saying I want to make love to Cheryl, and announcing the fact on a blog I own and saying that's fuelling my wish..

Re: Big Brother: Channel 5 close to deal

Big Brother’s first Channel 5 series will be the ‘hottest ever’ with fans being able to pick housemates for the first time, reports The Daily Star.

Bosses are said to be planning the twist for what is expected to be a Celebrity edition, with potential contestants including Wayne Rooney’s cousin Natalie and sexual conquest Jenny Thompson.

Football pundit Andy Gray, whose was sacked from Sky Sports News recently, and Only Way Is Essex twins Sam and Billie Faiers are also rumoured for the show.

According to the paper, it will return ‘bigger, brighter, sexier and more outrageous’ than before with several ‘hot new features’ – such as a huge pool and sauna – alongside old favourites.

They also claim that the 24-hour live feed – which was controversially axed by Channel 4 in 2009 before they brought it back online for their final series last year – WILL return, with a split screen also planned so viewers can choose which stars they follow.

A source said: “With the weather set to be scorching the show will have some sizzling action.”

It’s important to remember that Channel 5 has yet to confirm a Big Brother revival – but it is now looking more likely than ever. Stick with us…

It's not official. The contracts have not been signed. What you have there is an outline of what Channel 5 will do if the contracts are signed.

Dirty Desmond is not above using his papers to try to favour his own side as the negotiations draw to a close. He will be trying to get viewers excited and most probably making the case to Endemol for the show to be done in the way he wants it done.

It probably will happen, but there's no ink on the contracts yet, so don't start planning your opening night party. ;)

Damn, i was printing flyers out for a launch party haha.

You are right, this could turn out to be a publicity stunt to get more viewers on the channel, who knows.

Chris 03-04-2011 12:19

Re: Big Brother: Channel 5 close to deal

It's amazing how seeing something in print can make you think it's true ... even if you know that it's not. The people at Endemol will be reading all about this today, and getting texts, phone calls and Tweets from people who know they're involved, congratulating them, telling them how exciting it is, etc etc etc. All of which will serve to make them think themselves that it really must be exciting, they really have done something clever, etc. As a result, whatever the final sticking point is, the one thing that stopped the contracts being signed weeks ago, might now just seem not important enough to keep holding out on. They may just go back into work on Monday morning and give Desmond whatever it is he has been demanding.

Never underestimate the power of a PR campaign, especially when you own the newspaper that's doing the PR. ;)

Sorry dude, but Wikipedia is not an authoritative source, especially not on pages that can be edited by just anyone, and especially on a topic that is loaded with fanboys who so desperately want something to be true that they will latch onto anything that gives them hope - even if the essence of the story is that nobody has signed any contracts yet, and there is no date set when they will be signed.

I'm not saying it isn't going to happen, I'm just appealing for people to be a bit less hysterical and to see Dirty Desmond's PR campaign for what it is.

I think you'll find the Wikipedia entry is a little more accurate now.

For the love of Mike ... would some of you learn to read!

Here are the facts:

1. Richard Desmond owns Channel 5.
2. Richard Desmond wants to put Big Brother on Channel 5.
3. Richard Desmond owns The Daily Star.
4. Richard Desmond does not own Big Brother.
5. Richard Desmond wants to use the Daily Star to help push negotiations for Big Brother in a favourable direction.
6. Richard Desmond runs a story in the Daily Star that appears to say it's a done deal - until you read beyond the first couple of sentences, where you find out that:
- No contracts have been signed.
- No date has been set for signing contracts.

Big Brother will probably come back. If it does, it will almost certainly come back on Channel 5. But at the moment, what you are reading is a very public attempt by Richard Desmond to influence the final stages of negotiations in his favour.

This suggests to me that there are still a couple of serious sticking points. The very public use of the Daily Star might be a genuine exclusive reveal that those sticking points are now addressed, or it could be a final desperate throw of the dice. Nothing is settled until there is ink on the contracts.

:bsmack: :p:

Seriously though, Desmond has got what he wanted - this thread had (finally) died off, because there was nothing new to speculate about. Now it's all a-buzz again. There's still nothing new to speculate about, but the story has just had some major coverage in a national newspaper, and that gives it some currency and legitimacy.

Forums all over the interwebs are full of this once more, and Desmond can go to Endemol tomorrow morning and say, "are you sure you lot really want to keep hanging on for [whatever it is they're still insisting on putting in the contract that Desmond doesn't like]? Look at all the chatter, people are desperate for Big Brother! The sooner you sign the contract the sooner you can start making money! Come on! Do it! Do it now!"

Or words to that effect, anyway. :D

I'm happy to try to explain why ... from my point of view, anyway.

First thing is, there is a difference between the person and the things they like. It is possible for me to respect, and like, someone, whilst at the same time not liking something that they do. When someone in this thread expresses loathing for Big Brother, they are not expressing loathing for you.

In the first three years I was quite a fan of Big Brother. I was interested in it as a social experiment in which people willingly took part in something where the rules and conduct of the game were both reasonable, and reasonably well understood before it began.

I went right off it when they started taking overt steps to create conflict and picking contestants not for the interesting social mix but for the likelihood that they could be relied on to do something outrageous during their stay in the house.

Some of the stuff that has gone on in the BB house in recent years has been degrading and IMO has devalued the people who took part, even if they were too willing to care (or too stupid to notice).

And I find the discussions that go on on this forum, and in the Press, to be utterly distasteful because they reduce human beings to the level of two-dimensional soap opera characters whose value is defined by how willing they are to degrade themselves or act in whatever way the viewer demands in order to derive their entertainment.

I believe prostitution is exploitation even if the prostitute is a willing participant and I believe Big Brother is right there in the same category.

I really do respect your point of view. Your entitled to it as much as the people who like big brother for the reasons they like it.

I cant stand sports or other tv shows but I dont go and moan about them to people who like them.

I like big brother for my own reasons and one is certainly not to see people made a fool of or bullys ganging up on another housemate and like when they are evicted. We all have our reasons for watching different things

Re: Big Brother: Channel 5 close to deal

Indeed we all do have our own reasons for our choices. However, a thing to bear in mind when posting about the things we choose on an internet forum such as this is, forums are not like the letters page of your local paper where you can have your say on a topic and expect it to go unchallenged. On an internet discussion forum, anything that gets posted is open to be discussed and challenged. That's what the forum exists for.

You should probably go and have a moan in the Football thread occasionally. I do. It's fun. ;)

I do bear in mind that this is an open forum and yes I respect you can have your say and would never stop you but I will speak up for what I do believe in and no I respect the people who post about the topics they like and wouldn't moan about what they like. Thats just me ;)

Going into a thread for the sole purpose of winding people up is the definition of a forum troll ...something someone with a team badge shouldn't be encouraging ;)

Yep, I would say that now it really is a done deal. Grauniad is no doubt hacking its way through the press release and will have something up in due course. I imagine the Daily Star will treat it like some sort of major global event tomorrow morning as well.

I wonder whether there's likely to be a BB spin-off on Red Hot TV. Or if the main show will be sponsored by one of his magazines. Asian Babes, perhaps. Or maybe Horny Housewives.

What a class act this bloke is.

Channel 5 has confirmed that it has signed a two-year exclusive rights deal with Endemol to air reality show Big Brother.

The hit programme, which ran for a decade on Channel 4, will return later this year after C5 and producers Endemol finally signed off a deal for the series yesterday.

A new "all-star celebrity" version of the show will launch in the late summer followed by a brand new series featuring members of the public in the autumn. The programme will continue to be filmed at Elstree Film Studios and produced by Endemol UK's production arm Initial.

Channel 5's director of programmes Jeff Ford said: "We're hugely excited to have secured the return of Big Brother for Channel 5 which will form a key part of this year's schedule.

"The series has previously captivated a decade of television viewers and we aim to bring Channel 5's energy, optimism and vibrancy to the series."

Endemol chief executive Tim Hincks said: "Big Brother has a passionate and loyal fanbase in the UK and I'm delighted it has found a new home on Channel 5. Ten years on it's as potent and cutting-edge as ever and it's still one of the only truly multiplatform entertainment brands."

Thta's why you take newspaper reports with a great big pinch of salt. Until there is an official announcement of a signed contract, nobody really knows exactly what will happen.

Now this deal is done, we know the truth of it.

Indeed ,i always thought a 5 yr deal was a bit optomistic ,who in there right mind would do a 5yr deal on a flagging reality show.

Re: [Update] Big Brother returns on Channel 5

It may be that the length of the deal was one of the final sticking points.

Anyway, the best comment I have heard about this so far was from the drivetime DJ on Clyde 1 FM this evening, who has described Big Brother as being "like a jobbie that won't flush."

Never a truer word, IMO.

But I wonder if there will be anything left from the other channels that is worth recording. TV seems to be plumetting for the lowest possible denominator in the search for easy ratings.

Time to take out a decent subscription with Love Film me thinks. :(

From bbspy

Endemol is looking to draft in a big name executive producer to take Big Brother ‘back to basics’ on Channel 5, according to Broadcast.

The show’s production company will apparently hire a new ‘creative supremo’ for its comeback – which was confirmed yesterday – as they look to strip back the format and rediscover elements which made it popular.

The publication claims Endemol is keen to avoid the lavish twists of Big Brother’s later years on Channel 4, even though the new series is set to run for the same length of time. They will also make its multiplatform features a ‘key focus’ and use social media in a more innovative way.

A source ‘close to C5′ said that its owner, Richard Desmond, sees BB as a perfect match for the network.

“Desmond harbours a dream of creating stars for the public, which he can grow and crosspromote in his print titles,” they commented. “Ratings wise, even if it underperforms on last year, it will still shunt C5’s audience youth-wards, which is clearly beneficial.”

Meanwhile, CampaignLive reports that Channel 5 is to begin seeking ‘headline sponsors’ for Big Brother. Their sales director Nick Bampton will hold presentations at agencies from next week to explain the advertising opportunities on offer, which will include product placement for the first time after changes to Ofcom rules. This will allow brands to pay for their products to be included on the show.
