Hah I wish I had will power, I have a supplement and vitamin drawer that looks like it belongs in a pharmacy instead.

Seriously will power time will be in a couple of weeks.

Not even remotely close to being ripped. In a couple of weeks time I'm going on a 10 week long fat loss mission, after which I will hopefully not be too far away from being called 'ripped'. :)

I may have missed it, given that it's 21 pages of posts, but could you post your diet/exercise regime? IF you don't mind giving up your secrets :P

But yea, I know what you mean about the supplements/vitamins, I had about 8 large tubs of creatine and whey stuff once, heh.

Ignitionnet 30-04-2011 20:10

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

I make my own protein bars for starters out of oats, peanut butter, milk, whey protein and flax seed.

My diet isn't interesting apart from that I eat about every 3 hours, and my diet is quite heavy on protein. My bars are a full replacement in themselves if in a rush.

Breakfast is porridge made with water, with 40g of whey protein powder mixed in.

I eat wholemeal seeded bread and brown rice.

Most of my fat comes from olive oil.

I consume whey protein with water also if my meal doesn't contain enough protein.

Exercise - currently I lift weights 4 times a week, different body parts each day, and I do light cardio, 45 mins of reasonably rapid walking, twice a week along with 2 x 30 minute sessions in addition to this twice per week.

Supplements - erk.

Daily:

Red Yeast Rice with CoQ10 - 1000mg
Complete Multivitamin
High dose Vitamin B supplement
Zinc and Magnesium x 3
Creatine Monohydrate
Liv-52 x 2 Twice / day
Alpha Lipoic Acid
Omega 3 - 2, 2 - 3 times Daily

That's not a complete list, but it'll do for now, I have others that are taken less often.

I do not condone use of this product and it is not suitable for everyone but it's the least dodgy of the ones I left out. Be bloody careful if you decide to purchase it though.

It's a grey market product, one of its ingredients is banned in a large part of the world due to being implicated in cardiac issues.

If I were to say that it's a perfectly safe product that I highly recommend and someone with a slightly dodgy ticker were to have some and keel over it wouldn't be ideal.

I managed to run 9km today without having any reaction from niggly injuries that have been hampering my attempts to get fitter. :)

I hope to get a couple of 5kish runs during the week and perhaps run 10k next weekend... I haven't managed that for about 4 years.

Strangely endomondo, the sport tracker on my phone, has me doing today's run on the 28th April!!! Are the satellites that track me running slow;)

I listen to my body. :)

When I feel pain or discomfort I just ease off. I've tried to run through pain previously but it just prevents you from exercising for an extended period. The "tortoise" kilometre today was 70 seconds slower than my "hare" kilometre because my knee was acting up. It was also slower than the kilo that had a fairly steep hill in it .... and I hate hills!!

I will just have to walk until I feel the pain and just stop and be sensible. I was thinking of getting the heat pads to see would they help. I really do miss the walking and get frustrated when I cant do the walks I was able to do :( I used to walk up a big steep hill before and had no problem with it but now I find it hard

try using a TeNs machine while out walking,
it's small battery powered device that ease's pain by using electrical impulses to stimulate the bodies own pain fighting abilities

That's the way to do it. Walk at a pace between regular distances, e.g. lamposts, then ease off for the same distance.

I find setting your own goals increases motivation too. If you've got a smartphone try downloading the app from endomondo.com. You can track your "workouts", whether it's walking, cycling, running or a number of other sports... and track your own record. It's not 100% accurate but close enough if you're wanting to record your improvements.

They can be used to help ease pain on most part's of the body LR,
but they are not recomended in certain case's, ie:- if You have a pacemaker, and other things

quite a few pain management clinics issue TENS machines, they can be highly effective combined with other pain relieving measures. I last used one before my left hip was replaced, it certainly helped and well worth a try.

The old ephedrine plus caffeine to offer a slightly wider based kick and aspirin or similar to slow down the body's compensatory responses to the stimulant.

Well done everyone taking part.

I am currently on the final stretch of 'getting into shape' following a loss of almost 7 stone over about five years. So it's encouraging to see others doing well also.

I'm in the toning up stage and it's proving to be rather annoying as I'm not making progress as fast as I would like. But I've been going 5 years...another few months or a year won't hurt!

Well done you and well done for sticking at it.

My main problem is getting rid of the fat around my stomach. Any ideas pleaseeeeeeee?

Bob 02-05-2011 17:18

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

It comments like yours that help you get through it. So thanks very much.

That is still a problem area for me. I have quite a bit of loose skin on my stomach from all the weight loss. There is still fat there, even after all this time so I need to stick at it.

Basically keep at the cardio. I also attend Pilates twice a week and do a Body Pump class. I suspect once the skin tightens up, I should have some kick ass abs. They are there somewhere!

I decided to adjust my eating habits monday to Friday, and eat what I used to on the weekends. Made net gains during the week (salads for lunch, minimise bread consumption, no snacking).
I wouldn't normally eat junk on a weekend either but the fact that I can eat a pizza or a kebab if i want to (as I would have if I craved one before) means I'm not cutting out some pleasures totally.
I also go to the gym 3 times a week - doing 30-35 mins on the xtrainer and some weights. And one pilates session a week, be it in a class or on my front room floor infront of the telly.
I had a back op in July last year (spinal fusion) and that was a great incentive to get rid of some weight!

Well done you. I was thinking of doing the Piliates as I have problems with my neck and spin and back so cant do any gym work. I just need to find some exercise that wont do me anymore damage than I alread have. I cut way way back on chocolate and dont like salads and just have a small bread roll with my veg soup

Tinned beans, carrots, white cabbage (Think coleslaw) Or try some stir fries with things like brocolli and leeks, peppers etc. Some of these are seriously low in the calorie dept but full of flavour.

I'm working on it but the six pack seems to resolutely refuse to emerge from the layer of subcutaneous fat. Don't help when the OH calls me cuddly.

Ya but I had to cut back on it. I would happily eat a box of chocolates in one night and in an hour and then feel sick :(:( I dont like beans and dont like raw veg. Yuk! I do eat carrotts cooked and white cabbage cooked. Dont like coleslaw or stir fries but like brocolli. I'm cuddly around the waist :D:D:D

I dont drink so that is an advantage for me but I have to say I do smoke and find it hard to give it up as I at the moment enjoy it to much. I dont eat now inbetween meals and have cut down eating inbetween meals and as I have a bad injury in my back and complications from an op I cant walk far so dont know what to do to do exercise that wont complicate my injurys

Just don't fade away completely peoples ;)

Fit is one thing - wasted away is another.
Can I stand on me soapbox? - a bit of everything did no-one any harm (I'm talking food here).
Like I say to my youngest - meat/fat/whatever - ok but have some of the red and green stuff too.

Off me box :D

There's a cure for that stress - it's called Forum Memebers :D

1st 10K of the year out the way. Decent time (46:03), no knee pain and a bit left in the tank at the end. :tu:

Hopefully I can drop some weight and up the speed a bit to get the time down even more by the end of the year.

I've entered my first ever 10K on Fathers day at Bellahouston Park.:) I'm hoping to be under 52 minutes.

Have you ever ran it Derek? I've watched parts of the womens 10K before and don't remember it being particulary hilly.

Men's health one? Did it last year and its on my list for this year, bit of a hill at the start then another in Pollok park and a final one just at the end. Overall it's pretty flat and fairly fast, maybe a bit crowded at the start but good overall.

Shameless plug time but I'd recommend getting along to Glasgow parkrun beforehand to do a 5K over a big chunk of the course. :)

LondonRoad 19-05-2011 23:28

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

Thanks Sasha. I'll let you know how I get on.

Derek, I registered for parkrun last year just before I strained my calf. Since then my youngest has started a little Spanish class on Saturday mornings so I'm snookered until the class stops for the holidays. The class is only on for 40 minutes but it's at 10.30 so no es possible. While she's in the class I've been using the time to get 5 or 6K in though:)

The good news is I've been off the large bars of fruit & nut for over a week. The bad news is, I'm eating too much poridge and too many weetabix!

The settee
collapsed today about 5 seconds after I sat on it... I was just going to take a nice sip of hot coffee when it happened.

I have adhesive capsulitis
in both shoulders,"frozen shoulder" I couldn't lift myself up off the couch so had to stay sat down in terrific pain with hot coffee running down my face and clean t-shirt. I've never been this heavy before.

The sad thing is we bought the couch from Ikea because of a commercial like this

Oh well, time to check online for another sofa.

How in the end did you manage to get up? Did you have to wait long for someone to come and help you? I'm so sorry to hear you had such a bad experience but so glad to hear that your of the fruit and nut bars. :hugs::hugs::hugs:

Thanks for your concern Sasha. I waited for the pain to subside, then had to kind of roll on my side so my knees were on the floor. My son was just stood there laughing at me... Mind you, it must have been extremely funny to see, I'd have made it to number one in the You've Been Framed charts! :D

Ah I'm glad your alright and I dont mean this in a bad way but maybe this was the start of getting you to really take on board to get really serious with the losing weight and your doing really well also now staying of the chocolate also. I have been weening myself of it slowely and now by next month I should be finally of it.

If only now I could wean myself of the fags :(:(:(

I'm looking for realistic advice from Deek or any other joggers/runners out there. (what's the difference between a jogger and a runner?)

I suspect I might have set too easy a target for my first 10K race as I ran 10K today in 51:28 this morning. With 4 weeks to go how much should I lower that by?

I like targets to mentally aim for since it keeps me motivated but I don't want to make it so unrealistic that it has the opposite effect.

With family and work responsibilities I'm restricted to 3 runs a week, 2 about 5-6K and one longer one. Should I aim for 51 mins or would 50 be attainable?

I was pleasantly surprised at my time today. I was expecting about 54 minutes. It was perfect conditions this morning though so don't want to delude myself.

l am not getting fit because basically l have a serious ongoing medical condition and if l did try to exercise it would worsen my condition and probably kill me.

4 weeks to go. I'd think about reducing your training slightly for weeks 2 and 3 and doing very little for week 4 before the race.
If the run today was on roads with the associated stop-starts for junctions you could knock 4-5 minutes off. If it was on pathways etc. maybe take 2-3 minutes to take the race buzz into account.

Hmmm, that's food for thought. Yesterday was mostly roads, but not particularly busy roads. I can only remember being held up at one junction and by one dog owner with the 20 foot leads. Still, even allowing a minute for that it might make a sub 50 minutes possible.

Here's a real staple part of my diet at the moment. High protein, low fat.

Quote:

Nutrition
Typical values per 100g
Energy 343kj / 80kcal
Protein 19.5g
Carbohydrate 0g
of which sugars 0g
Fat 0.3g
of which saturates 0.2g
Fibre 0g
Sodium 0.11g
Nearly 20 grams of protein in 80 calories. As clean as you like. Yum :)

I use it instead of protein bars for a quick, low calorie protein fix.

Takes 3 minutes in the microwave to cook two of them, 39g of protein, 161 calories.

What do they look and taste like after you microwave them? The ones from Morrisons looked pretty tuff and didn't have much taste to them.

Not eating them for their flavour :)

There will be pacemakers this year for sub 50, 55 and 1 hour times including a devestatingly handsome chap doing a sub 50 pace ;) so you can get behind one of them and if you have anything left in the final 1000 meters open up a bit.

My moan today fitness wise. Early morning run, cold, wet and I didn't tape up my hairy man-nipples. As I result I look like I've been shot twice

Ouch, that's not something I've ever suffered from due to the absence of any muscle definition in my chest.... or is the pot belly preventing material rubbing the nipple area.;)

Pacemaker sounds like a great idea. In the unlikely event that there are 2 devestatingly handsome chaps in the event, how does one identify the 50 minute pacemaker?

My gripe today - bloody hip bursitis is playing up again. I had planned to do a long run today but during yesterday's shorter run the old injury started acting up. I'm hoping that resting it today will allow me out tomorrow:(

We will have hi-viz vests on and probably a balloon tied to us so we can easily be seen. Not sure if there will be one for each starting pen yet, hopefully there will be.

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

My last long run before my first 10k in 2 weeks time and very pleased.
I ran 12K in 1hr 2min, the first 10k being in 49mins 55secs. I also ran the first 5k in under 24 mins so 3 personal bests in the same run :D:D:D

It was perfect conditions right enough.

No hip pain during run although I'm feeling a little discomfort now.

I'll now take Deek's advice and scale down the training a bit. Maybe do 3 more 5-6K runs.
