I've seen Flipbook. Not really given it a proper try though.

Do you get a deal on The Times online/app version due to subscribing to the print version, of did you have to take out a separate subscription?

Nice :) Which model did you go for?

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a blue polyurethane Smart Cover for my iPad 2. I had originally wanted to get a shell folio case, but the one I wanted still hasn't been released, and as my iPad came a couple of weeks early I ended up just buying a Smart Cover so I had *something* for when it arrived.

It's good, but definitely a case of style over function. There is (obviously) no protection for the rear of the device (unfortunate given how easy it seems to be to mark it).

I looked around for shell cases purely for the rear, which also work with the Smart Cover... eventually settled on the Cool Bananas "SmartShell", so now my iPad 2 has full protection on both sides.

I also bought a Belkin neoprene sleeve from Amazon for around a tenner, to keep it in when out of the house. It was designed for the iPad 1, but still easily takes the iPad 2 + Smart Cover + SmartShell as the iPad 2 is just that bit slimmer. Quite a handy sleeve, with padding and a front pocket.

Re the Times.

I subscribed online through the Times site (cheaper than going through iTunes), and the sub is only for the electronic and iPad versions, not the hard copy.

Apple iPad 3?

Hey guys, i have seen on several sites that Apple will release an iPad 3, but wanted your opinions, as this is whats holding me back from buying one. if there is going to be one released, I will wait until then, if not then I will go ahead and buy the iPad 2

Stuart 31-07-2011 20:32

Re: Apple iPad 3?

There will be at some point. The rumour says it will be released in September, but Apple don't tend to vary their release timetable much, and the two previous ipads have been released in March/April and they are released once a year, so March/April 2012 is my bet..

Chris 31-07-2011 20:35

Re: Apple iPad 3?

They will release one, but I can't see them doing it this year, with iPad 2 only having been out a few months (4 months or so, IIRC).

If you have decided you want/need an iPad, go and get one. And unless you really need the features of the iPad 2, consider picking up an iPad 1 from a reputable seller on eBay. There are some great deals to be had. We got a 64gb 3G iPad 1 for £360 inc. delivery and while it was sold as 2nd hand it was in its original box. Both box and iPad were absolutely mint.

That's a very good question ... We didn't think we would have a use for one until we borrowed one for a couple of weeks and found it greatly assisted us in managing bookings for our B&B. We bought our own after that and took almost £400 revenue while away from home on our family summer holidays, due to being able to respond quickly to enquiries from our web form.

Trying to do the same on any smartphone would have been a real faff, especially when trying to issue electronic invoices from our Paypal account (and I have tried, with an iphone). We could of course have done it with a laptop, but the iPad is far easier to slip into a bag and then use whilst sipping coffee at the seaside cafe of your choice and doesn't make it feel like you just took the office away on holiday with you. Oh, and there are some great rainy day apps for the kids ... Ours lap up everything they can get from Toca Boca.

The thing with tablets in general is, they are a new technology and it's not apparent what all the uses for them might be. But when you get one, you find out how it might fit for you.

Also this morning I did some last minute sermon planning with mine, looked up a web page I wanted to read from and found a photo I was able to hold up as a visual aid. Then I switched to my Bible reader app and read from a new Bible translation I like very much but don't own a paper copy of.

Anyway, I don't know why Wayne wants one, but that's why I'm very glad I have one. :)

Re: Apple iPad 3?

I get all the sermons / church stuff / presentations emailed to me the night before on my iPad so I can take it with me and follow what's happening as it's easier than me trying to get everything they do in large print.

When they have a presentation they email the powerpoint they put up on their big screen for me :)

edit - then of course there's the problem that thus far android just don't do a decent screen reader / zoom software. They are of course getting there but it's no good to me yet ;)

The rumours have all been pointing at a September release for some time now.

The speculation is that the next iPad will not be an iPad 3, replacing the iPad 2 (which only came out in March), but an iPad HD, existing alongside the iPad 2 in a wider iPad family.

I can see some of the reasoning behind it, but I'm not really convinced.

To release an actual iPad 3 only six months after the iPad 2 would IMO be a disastrous PR move. People are used to annual updates (Apple is far from the only CE company to release new models of things each year), but to release a new iPad after six months? Cue outrage...[But then cue queues, of course...]. The only reason which makes sense for releasing an actual iPad 3 in September is that it would shift the release schedule from March/April to the more profitable and more sensible "holiday season". But other than that, I don't see the point. Apple is still so far ahead of the competition in the tablet market, it really doesn't need to do anything new so prematurely.

Releasing an iPad HD in September, instead of an iPad 3, could make more sense. It would add to the range, instead of replacing the iPad 2. It would be far less of a "screw you!!!" to existing iPad 2 owners than an iPad 3 would be, and if it launched at the iPad 2's existing price points (with the iPad 2 then slashed in price), Apple would completely destroy the "competition" once and for all. Why spend £500 on a Xoom, TouchPad, or Galaxy Tab 10.1 etc. when you could get a better specced iPad HD for the same cost, or a similarly specced iPad 2 for ~£100 less? But... it would fragment the product line. And what would happen next year? A "non-Retina" iPad 3 in March, with an iPad 3 HD in September? Or just an iPad 3 HD in March, or September? Too complicated.

Still, the tech sites & Apple bloggers seem convinced of their "sources" and that there will be an iPad HD in September...

To Wayne, I say: Wait until September...

My wife's Samsung netbook lasts about five hours before needing to be charged.

My iPad 2 can easily last for twice that, whether I'm watching videos non-stop or browsing via WiFi.

As for external storage... I don't need it. I have a 32GB model, and it's only around half-full at the moment. But even only half-full, that's several hours of video. If I go away, I have tonnes of content available to watch without needing to resync. OK, if I went away for a couple of weeks rather than a long weekend, I may run out of stuff to watch, but... if I was going away, why would I want to spend all my time watching videos on my iPad... may as well stay at home. The storage it has is more than enough to give me stuff to watch on a return trip somewhere by car/coach/train/plane, with stuff left over.

EDIT: Oh, and once iCloud launches in September, storage space for music & photos will not be necessary, so long as you have an internet connection.

I have a laptop and an iPad2 previously and iPad and it's much better than using a laptop. Lighter and easier to carry round and pull out to use.

I have just turned from holiday and while at the resort I had my ipad2 for web access and seeing all the people with huge laptops with them I had to laugh as my device was about ave the size and weight of theirs and has a much better battery life and no need to wait on it booting up every time I want to use it.

This is what a newspaper should look like on a tablet...

The Guardian - iPad edition (iOS5 Newsstand)

None of this "just sell them a scan of our paper/magazine" that some publishers apparently do, the Guardian iPad edition is a proper iPad-oriented version of the newspaper.

£9.99 per month (which certainly beats paying £1.20 per weekday and £2.10 per Saturday for the print edition). And... the first three months are free for everyone! :) Print subscribers also get the iPad edition for free as part of their subscription.

Agreed.

However, I get the Times, and that has been optimised for the iPad, rather than just "adapted" (£8.80 per month for Times, Sunday Times, and access to the online versions).

I never bothered Jailbreaking my iPad, although my iPhone was Jailbroken. Losing the Jailbreak on that, in exchange for iOS5, wasn't a problem for me as iOS5 now does most of what I used to Jailbreak for (e.g. notifications which don't suck), plus when I get a new contract in a couple of months I'll get a new one with tethering included so won't need MyWi any more (which I rarely used anyway).

Oh, some updated numbers, now Apple has released its latest quarterly results:

Total number of iPads sold so far: 39.85 million

Number of iPads sold in Apple's most recently reported quarter = 11.12 million

Number of iPads sold in Apple's previous quarter = 9.25 million

The "tablet market" is still effectively just the "iPad market" at the moment.

Some of them now work because they're being embedded into news pages in some container other than Flash. Most of them are still Flash though, and won't work.

It looks to me like they are progressively moving away from Flash. Presumably there's a pattern to what's changed and what hasn't, but I don't know what it is. The new-look weather section still uses Flash for forecast videos, even after they removed Flash from the animated maps, which seems a bit pointless.

Yup. All the rumours, tech blogs, "sources in the supply chain", etc. are pointing towards a March 2012 release... which would fit with Apple's usual annual product cycle. I have seen a few "analysts" say it will be in January or February, but it's all just guesswork at the moment. It's certain that one is coming though.

A "Retina display" is the main thing people are expecting, along with the usual spec. bump (quad-core "Apple A6" System-on-a-Chip?).

I'd wait for the iPad 3.

April 2010 - iPad

March 2011 - iPad 2

I think it would be strange if no.3 wasn't released within the next few months...

peanut 02-01-2012 14:14

Re: The Apple iPad Thread

For something as small as the iPad, I don't think I'd be too bothered about the screen res is, the iPad 2 looks fine as it is. I'd go for price, if the iPad 2 is marginally cheaper than 3 then it'll be best try them both out first.

As for apps, you'll go through a phase of installing a few, but after a while if like myself, you'll use it for just the things you need, like browsing, maps, video and the odd game. Comics and PDF files (mags) are great on it, but ebooks the Kindle wins hands down. Anything else just has the novelty factor for a while. Great items though.

There was a big difference in the screen between the iPhone3 and the iPhone4. The screen on the iPad2 looks good so not sure of there would be the same noticeable difference.

I don't know the differences between the iphones as I've not seen them, but again it's down to the individual, I don't see the point in paying out for a higher tech/spec screen on a phone when all it is is a phone, should it or does it really matter? I'd pay out on a monitor or a big screen tv, but I think it's all a bit gimmicky when it comes to phones and tablets. (My opinion only of course).

iPhone / 3G / 3GS: 480 x 320 resolution

iPhone 4 / 4S: 960 x 640 resolution

iPad 1 / 2: 1024 × 768 resolution

iPad 3: Expected to have a 2048 x 1536 resolution

Higher resolution = better for games, better for videos, etc.

But mostly, bigger numbers = better for sales.

I once overheard a neighbour back in the early 2000s enthusing about a new computer he was thinking of buying on the basis that the press advert he was holding said it had a 56k modem. He knew absolutely frack-all about computers. Mind you, his son's mate, who he was bragging to, knew only slightly more (he advised he should be looking for a computer that offered "broadband, minimum.")

Having watched a couple of films, and played a couple of HD games, on my iPad, I can't see how the extra resolution is going to improve the overall experience by any great amount. I use my pad in places where it's never optimal viewing conditions anyway, either on my lap or occasionally rattling down the west coast mainline. The value in the product IMO is still in being able to view anything at all on it, wherever and whenever, and not in peering at a steady screen long enough to dribble over a few extra pixels.

Regardless of whatever the iPad 3 brings, waiting two months to ensure you have the latest and greatest for the same price is a sensible idea.

Lend me your ears and check this funky bit of kit

Alesis Ampdock

Would have been handy to have an audio demo but it certainly looks promising.

Saw this in the music shop a few weeks ago, seems a bit gimmicky and knowing my luck I'd probably put my foot throu the screen. I have the iRig and a few pieces of software such as Amplitube, all good stuff :)

I perfer the ioDock myself.

Uncle Peter 19-01-2012 14:41

Re: The Apple iPad Thread

I think the selling point of the ampdock are the hardware controls and foot pedal. The concept is good for multi-instrumental/occasional guitarists in a live situation; particularly those who don't really fancy carrying the additional weight of an amp. There's the other small matter of anything would sound better than a Line 6 Pod - they sound truly awful when you crank up through a PA.

I think the iodock fits into a slightly different category of usage and I've been looking at the one to potentially replace the box of rackmounted modules I cart around with me but the software isn't quite there yet.

For those who don't venture outside CF : The iPad2 (5.01) and iPhone 4s have been successfully jailbroken, OSX AND Windows tools are now available. Probably covered in the iPhone thread but it deserves a mention here too.

Re: The Apple iPad Thread

Hi,

I've got an iPad2 - purchased in an Apple store. I got the Wi-Fi /3G version and when I purchased it I got an O2 SIM. I've registered the SIM in the iPad and used it once on a £2.06 / 200MB 24hr limit session. As it's now registered to the device, do I have an online O2 account somewhere that was created?

If so - how do I access it? I've tried the O2 site but it didn't recognise the SIM / mobile number.

Jameseh 22-01-2012 21:57

Re: The Apple iPad Thread

Seems a stupid suggestion but have you tried resetting your password? o2 accounts are tied to an email so if you try and reset yours you might get lucky.

Though as it doesn't recognise the SIM itself I don't know.

LSainsbury 22-01-2012 22:17

Re: The Apple iPad Thread

No - becuase I don't have an account - my ID is not recognised. I don't think it has been automatically created.

:D Lots.

Love mine, so useful, especially when I am out driving the taxi (not while driving of course!) Also makes a nice high-tech version of an A-Z (thanks Google Maps ;D)

Are you a real life Taxi driver?

I own quite a few cars I rent out to Taxi drivers, They pay me either £200 for a single shift. I will then double shift that car for £400 a week or they pay me £290 to double shift it and they keep the car 24/7.

I currently run about 18 private hire cars and 7 Blackcabs in Shropshire. Surely you're using Autocab data units or something similar which have GPS on the touch screens?

Yes and no I guess....I may not have the correct portal address (url) for starters - perhaps they may be another one for iPad / SIM users...

Apple will launch the third version of the iPad on Wednesday 7 March at an event in San Francisco, according to a number of reports online. The reports also that the device will have a "retina" screen – with four times as many pixels as the current model – and could include 4G connectivity for US high-speed networks.

The website iMore says the device will have a quad-core processor – compared with the dual-core A5 chip in the current iPad model. The increased screen resolution would increase the apparent detail on images while not requiring software developers to rewrite their products

Stephen 14-02-2012 15:47

Re: The Apple iPad Thread

Personally I don't think there will be 4G or LTE as its still not a widely available service.

Not sure it really needs the Retina screen either. The current iPad 2 screen looks amazing as it is.

Tezcatlipoca 14-02-2012 19:33

Re: The Apple iPad Thread

It does look great, but it would be even better with a higher resolution. Better for videos, photos, and more.

Assuming Apple does give the third iPad a so-called "Retina" display, I'd assume that we'll also start to see 1080p videos on iTunes... plus Apple is also rumoured to finally be revealing a third Apple TV STB next month at the same event [much more likely I think than an actual Apple branded TV]... 1080p streaming at last? All goes together...

___________________________________

The rumours all suggest the third iPad will be quad-core... allegedly using the quad-core equivalent of the CPU & GPU in the iPad 2 / iPhone 4S' "Apple A5" SoC, which would give the "Apple A6" SoC a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU and quad-core PowerVR SGX543MP4 GPU - that's the same as in the PS Vita!

I'd also assume more RAM, plus the cameras definitely need a boost (although personally I don't care about that as I don't see the point in a rear camera on a tablet).

I'll be there day one :) [subject to availability]

If the third iPad maintains the same price points as the iPad 2 currently holds, then this time I'll be going for the 64GB WiFi only model... more space for videos & apps, especially if it will be able to handle 1080p videos (my 32GB model is almost full now). If for some utterly stupid reason Apple goes against history and does a price bump this time, then I'll stick with 32GB.

March is going to be great. Mass Effect 3, iPad 3, Game of Thrones, Mad Men :)

Not to mention the fact that the 4S records video at 1080P. Not saying that'll mean Apple will stream video at 1080P, but I'd be surprised if they don't upgrade the Apple TV to support 1080P.

Just because your cars use Autocab, doesn't mean that all Taxi Firms have a similar system. My local cab firm is still using phones and radios.

You'll need a US VPN or proxy or download iSwifter on iOS, it has or had a free trial period, quality isn't stellar but it's watchable. Pretty sure it will end up on a torrent eventually.

New reports have emerged suggesting that Apple will launch a budget version of the iPad 2 next week, and put a small screen tablet into production later this year, as it seeks to see off the challenge of cheap Android tablets.

Apple has confirmed that it will hold a press event next Wednesday, at which at least one new iPad will be announced, with widespread speculation that it will be the iPad 3.

However, fresh reports suggest that the event will also herald a more affordable 8GB model of the iPad 2 that was released last year.

According to Digitimes, the new product would be priced at $349 to $399 (£219 to £250), and Apple will also lower the price of the 16GB iPad 2 to $449 (£281). This is presumably for the WiFi version, not 3G.

The industry blog also claimed that a source said the iPad Mini - a new smaller screen tablet - will go into production in the third quarter of 2012.

Digitimes believes that the iPad Mini will be a direct rival to the various budget Google Android tablets, particularly the Amazon Kindle Fire
