The point is you can't really say it's devalued when things are moved down, without also saying it's value has risen when things are added. It all evens out to the point that XL still holds considerable more value than L. Infact I'd say that XL today is worth far more over L than the XL of 3 years ago.

Annual price increases generally have nothing to do with added content and everything to do with inflation.

but that is what you would expect if you are paying for the top tier you expect to be given priority over new channels. you wouldnt expect to get them on L TV or M TV and not XL just because you think its already good value espeically as they are paying less.

once you start putting channels that were exclusive to XL TV onto your other tv packages you are offering less exclusivity for the same money which means XL TV looks less of a bargain and so its devalued. regardless of what happened in the past with channels being added its about what is happening now not what happened in the past afterall the channels that were made non exclusive were once XL TV only.

i know its only a few obscure channels but its still taking exclusivity away from XL tv regardless of how much you say its not !!!

Do you not understand - there will be new channels added to XL this year? It is only because the XL to L channel changes have been leaked before any official announcement that it seems like they are 'taking exclusivity away'

I think you are winding yourself up over nothing :) The changes haven't been officially announced and would have been announced when the new channels came to XL.... chill my friend  the good stuff is on it's way ;)

I get it ben its likely vm are adding new channels to TVXL at some point later this year, and at some point as has been leaked (above and on wiki) some channels will move over to TVL so there will be something for the two top tiers, only the top tier has not yet been leaked/announced.

So people are jumping the gun.;)

Guess eveyone will have to just wait and see. And RELAX.

How will we (The Virgin Media Viewers) find out this big announcement?

Will Virgin Media post it on VirginMedia.com on their Press Office?

Or will you tell us?

Could be Film 4 HD. Other channels could be Eurosport HD and E4 HD etc.

I'd be happy with just EurosportHD in readiness for this years MotoGP, SBK & BSB.

ITVHD would be nice to have if it becomes a simulcast of ITV1, and of course any of the Sky branded channels but we all know that isn't going to happen any time soon.

Yeah i'd love to have Sky 1 HD, Sky Sports HD and Sky Movies HD think we'll be waitng a while for them though. Can't see it be this year, maybe.. maybe next year.

[QUOTE=Media Boy;34953881]How will we (The Virgin Media Viewers) find out this big announcement?

On past performance customers will be told long after we learn here.
They like to make press announcements and argue that they cant tell us due to confidentiality issues or that thier marketing department are preparing something.

Thats what i was told me when i asked why they didnt let customers know at the same time as the press release.

I think MGM HD will not be coming anytime soon as BSkyB own half of MGM's UK Channel.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

Eurosport HD would be a good and obvious choice for VM to get in HD...Yes it has things like World Champion Hool-A-Hooping on it but there loads of tennis and motorsport ect which VM can proudly say is in HD.

VM need DESPERATLEY to get as many non-Sky Sport and Movie channels in HD as they can otherwise they look like a very poor comparison.

Especially as Sky have announced their intention to have a 3D channel next year and already intend to let Pubs show 3D sport from this year!

Chad 28-01-2010 15:03

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

How about Picturebox being free for TV XL customers? Virgin are always looking to add more HD content and a free on demand movie service would certainly be different from what SKY have to offer.

Mobes 28-01-2010 15:08

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

For me, Picturebox or OD is all well and good and i use it form time to time but most people want HD linear channels.

People still are very much into the habit of wanting to look at the TV Times, or in any other form of TV listings, and then tune into that channel at that time to watch that programme so linear HD is very important in that respect.

I'd like to see it be a new channel launch that's exclusive to Virgin and not just the addition of channels that have been available to Sky customers for ages.

Got a feeling it will be crap like movies4men type movie channels and music channels like starz.

This is how far VM are behind Sky, They are showing the Arsenal v Man Utd game in pubs up and down the country in 3D, we are still waiting for a lot of HD channels to come.

This is not a whinge, but l find it really strange where VM are swopping and switching off channels, without letting the customer know, l know that by switching of the analogue signal, we will get more channels, but my god is it frustrating waiting for these things to happen.

Virgin can't really do any 3D sport though, considering Sky have their own sports channels and Virgin don't. Although it'd be nice to see Virgin try and compete with Sky and get some other exclusive 3D content.

I can't see 3D TV catching on in a big way myself... the technology requires those stupid glasses..

Virgin Media are going to provide 3Dtv via On Demand with films and programmes at some stage for those interested in this... customers will also be required to purchase a new 3D capable tv for Sky's or Virgins 3Dtv service.

No they are not they are just showing it at 9 selected pubs at the moment and they will be rolling it out to all the other pubs in APRIL !

This is from the article that iread and also the link is posted below :

To support the broadcast, the nine pubs – located in London, Manchester, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Dublin – have been kitted out especially with some of the first ‘3D Ready’ TV sets to reach the UK and Ireland.

3D football has been around for ages...... Its called going to the match!!!

Sorry. I dont mean to be scartastic, technology is all well and good, but untill it becomes mainstreme lets not loose sight of the fact that it is but a gimmic. Yes I agree that long term it may well become the norm, but I am happy with good quality television at a good price and reliable. I know that isnt always the case and when it isnt I am the forst to call VM and complain.

But there is such a thing called choice. I used to be with Sky and chose VM because the profile of services - taken in their entirety - suited me better. May not be the case for others, but it is for me. If I stop being happy with that then I will change back to Sky, simple as. Doesent mean I dont want new channels and new services etc. but it does mean that I acknowledge what positives there are, and for me that means that VM is better......

I could not agree more, BUT l would say that by going to 3D are taking technology that bit further, and the customer will benefit in the long run.

But l would also say that broadcastor's must take that gamble, as it is the future we are looking at, to me sadly VM are still banging on the techn door, and are not prepared to take on the challenge, there is so much that VM could offer there customers, but won't.

I would like to see VM offer customers more channels, that are out there, l was told by a cable engineer, that VM can hold so many channels, but will only offer channels that benefit them, and not the customer.

For a start Arthur, if VM have nothing to offer, why do you have both VM and Sky? Secondly I am sure VM do only offer channels that benefit them. It isn't hard to work out though that what benefits us also benefits them. If they don't keep us happy then there will be no VM.
The big difference between VM and Sky is that Sky have bags of money and VM are cash constrained. For the foreseeable future Sky will be ahead of VM as far as new technology is concerned. If Virgin tried to keep up they would soon be bankrupt. Why worry though? How does Sky showing 3d in a few pubs impact on us as customers? It doesn't does it? Even if they were showing loads of 3d on their satellite, how many of us are going to splash out on a 3d tv in the next couple of years. I think we need to stay focused on what matters to us.
VM will be embracing new technologies that will make a big difference to our service, Tivo for instance. Also with network upgrades and the removal of analogue they will be adding more HD and more sd channels. That makes more difference to us than them showing 3d in a pub.

Apparently it's looking like £3k for a 3DTV, no thanks...

Considering this price, the target market would be very small, and Virgin are best to expand in HD and other services that have a larger target market as HD TVs are affordable to a lot more people than 3D.

It should before or just after the LSE opens ? As it will benefit the stock holders ?

I can't help thinking people are building themselves up for a disappointment here. Where is the source for this belief that there will be something big announced tomorrow?

I was being sarcastic. I don't have my hopes up, nobody knows what they'll announce tomorrow (except insiders).

Also for people without the new 3D, they could offer some older 3D like in the 3D Festival.

I guess they can say "We have in fact got 3D" lol

I have to admit, having just shelled out on a new HDTV, (and given the current recession), both myself and others are very unlikely to shell out further cash on a 3DTV.

I guess Arthur has to find something else to moan about now Virgin brought out all the HD channels.... :)

its the insiders on these forums who have said that there will be an announcement on Monday.

i dont think it will be anything official but more likely that the embargo on the information will be lifted on Monday so the insiders can say something about whats going on.

Oh sorry. It wasn't just you though. There seems to be an expectation of something big tomorrow whereas I can't see any proof of that. I will believe it when I see it.

Yes but all we seem to know so far is there is probably a couple of +1 channels coming. I hope is is something exiting but I'm not building my hopes up.

isn't the Analogue Switch-Off pretty much complete?

That surely frees up quite a bit of room for quite a few new channels...

My guess is ITV HD and the + 1channels. I am certainly predicting a HD channel. Just to keep us sweet, lol. Then again in another world, I wish it was the settlement of the pay tv saga, lol. (Queue abuse)

I don't think we'll hear about ITV HD tomorrow, seeing as it's not even a standalone channel yet. I think we'll be looking at either E4 HD or Eurosport HD.

When vm added the HD channels last year there was a rumour negotiations were taking place for eurosport HD and history HD.

I would be surprised if it was E4 HD yet.

Or maybe picturebox becoming part of the XLTV pack for say a £1 a month extra. Not long now untill we find out i guess.:)

I do not think it will be that long before ITV HD turns up probably before the world cup,and i think quite a while ago i heard vm were apparently testing it,but its been a while since then and recently has been quite on that front.

So weather that is one of the likely channels announced is evens i would think.

Not sure what 3DTV you are looking at but the shuttergalss solution only requires a small amount of extra hardware and should not push up the cost of a TV by that much. I would expect the premium to be now more then £200-£400 extra to start with. This certainly how all the technology blogs that came out of CES seem to indicate.

Yes, ITVHD was a 6-month trial service via Telewest that ended in November '06. Apart from the World Cup games there was very little on it. Space 1999 was re-mastered from film stock and looked amazing though!! - even if the acting was somewhat suspect...
