Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
It arrived this morning.. Already got 30+ books on it (some from some pdf/epub I already had on the laptop) and about 10 from the free range on Amazon..
Noticed in this thread that there was Sudoku available but the link doesn't work any more.. Any new links for it? |
Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
Just a bit of a pointer to people - if you are wanting to get a kindle that does text to speech (for whatever reason) don't get the new one as it's completely absent.
|
Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
Talking about text to speech Dilli, did you know that the latest firmware 3.3 has a shortcut for turning on/off the menu speech? (shift and spacebar) which was a feature I know that you were interested in.
|
Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
Mine is probably out of date - I use shift+sym to start/stop text to speech.
And alt+spacebar to start/stop mp3 playback. |
Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
I was talking about the menus to speech rather than text to speech.. All the kindles should have updated since the October release of the firmware

Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
Can I just butt in and ask if anyone has this Aluminum cover for their Kindle 3. I like the look of it and, as it seems to have a click-in way of holding the Kindle rather than the intrusive cage/elastic of most other covers, I am considering buying one.
I have the Amazon case with the built in light but it is a tad heavy in my hand bag. |
Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
I'd worry about the way the cover hinges on that one especially as if you're hand holding it the cover will hang down and free..

ADD..... Just had another Google and found an American thread on their Kindle Boards about this very case and it appears you can fold it back out of the way so I'm going to go for one. |
Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
On the pics it looks like it uses the case as a stand, if you can fold it back then that would make all the difference to it being a good case or not.. You'll have to let everyone know what it's like when you get it...

Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
Well Natalie took the back off my dodgy kindle and I'm just waiting for the replacement to show up then back into action.
|
Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
I don't think there's been a day since I got it that I haven't read a chapter or two on my Kindle.. What's it like being Kindleless Dilli.. ;) You taken up nail biting?? :D
|
Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
I am indeed at the nail biting stage :)

Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
My kindle met with an accident when I was at work(I work on a ship) luckily a very good friend wasn't totally addicted to their new kindle and lent me their's until I got a new one from amazon. I certainly went into a cold sweat until the friend offered the loan. :) ( they did get my old cover as a reward though):)
|
Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
The new battery arrived this morning and is now fitted - just waiting for it to charge up :)
|
Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
Let's have a pool.. How many times Dilli asks Natalie "Is it charged yet?"
 |
Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
Natalie's back at work, but I don't want to out the back on until I know it's ok.
I just wish I was more patient |

Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
My wifes Kindle has died 2 weeks out of the 1 year warranty, luckily enough had a nice chap from their CS and they have sent out a replacement for it. And it's a 3G one which is handy.
Saying that, I don't think I'll be buying another one after finding out that the problem with the kindle seems to be all too common. The screen just messes up with lines everywhere and it can happen to any kindle regardless of its age or how well you look after them. |
Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
I would definitely buy another if mine broke.:)

Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
I only work part-time hours and as part of a recompense for those of us that don't have a full working week my employer offers an incentive that if we can prove it will aid our performance, after 3 months of clear results they will fully reimburse us the cost of a number of items, Kindles being one of them (has to be the e-reader type, not a 'tablet' so no HD Fire unfirtunately) so I bought a Kindle Touch yesterday. I always wanted one and without this scheme at work I couldn't afford one but I'm really glad I did...
OMG it's awesome, I love it. Sadly I can't claim for any books but there are plenty of 20p books available on it. Unfortunately I can't claim for a case or spare charger etc but obviously I'm not complaining. The reported 'flash' when turning a page when the 'ink' refreshes is certainly there but doesn't bother me at all. Awesome bit of kit, fully recommended :tu: |

Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
I bought a Kindle Paperwhite a few weeks back and I love it! I didn't like the original grey E-Ink screen and was reading books in the app on my ipad, but found it ate my battery which was a problem as I use it for work, saw the paperwhite when it came out and it seemed like the best of both worlds, and it is!
Great stuff! |

Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
for all your free amazon kindle books try this site
I get an email every day with the genres I have set up. I don't download every day but I have had the occasional goody |
Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
Credit where credit is due, I recieved a brand new (3g) keyboard Kindle in the post the very next day as a replacement. (From a reconditioned non 3g version).
I'm still going to be dubious about them as they know they have a problem with them but they still haven't done anything about it. But I can't fault Amazon's response. But I will have to think again before recommending the Kindle to anyone. |
Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
Just discovered that practically all Gordon R Dickson's early SF catalogue is available for kindle including the Dorsai novels for a very reasonable price for each at Amazon.:cleader:

Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
A friend has a Paperwhite and although the screen is backlit the bit of usage I had showed the touch page to be very annoying and would turn pages when you accidently brushed the screen. Now if they did a Kindle Keyboard with the backlit paperwhite screen that to me would be perfect.

Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
If you already have a Kindle Fire or Fire HD or get one tomorrow, Amazon is giving us a £40 gift tomorrow

Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
Kindle seems to be the generic name for ereaders now. Every time someone sees me reading, they all comment on the Kindle, even though I don't HAVE a Kindle.
|
Re: The Amazon Kindle Thread
Its the same with iPads and iPods being interchanged with Tablets and MP3 players.
