I received my new modem this morning, installed it no problems, didn't need the plastic spanner, and it's now been registered, so everything is up and running.

This reminds me of free XP to Vista upgrades that Microsoft did on the run up the Vistas launch. Then everybody expected to get their copy of Vista on the day it was launched with no thought to the number of people who would have subscribed to the offer.

although in my opinion, thats a bit daft, because its only the tech heads that will read that anyway, and any tech head with sence would register instead of waiting for the times on the timetable...

It works differently this year.

There isn't going to be a list published like previous upgrades.

You should get a personal timetable when you log into My Virgin Media - which will tell you where you live only will get upgraded

no modem. no upgrade. no happy.

I registered today after speaking to customer services (who repeat as parrots the price rise is not for the upgrade) as Mays bill will have the £2 increase, I wanted to know when the FREE upgrade would happen, they said to register and they assure me its not a new contract, went through all the details and did what it said. Unfortunately there was no timetable, its still being updated and has been for a while. I emailed Virgin Customer Services, Press Office, and Richard Bransons office, the reason for this is cos if I just phone or email customer services, I get nowhere. I got a call from the CCEOs office and she changed my speed straight away, as it seems my modem was ok. I really appreciate her doing this, maybe shes not supposed to, in which case she didnt!!!! So it seems there is a way to upgrade without the wait, why cant customer services do this when you phone? If im going to be paying £2 more on my £18 standard charges (without discount) I at least want to see some improvement for a 14%? rise in charges.

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade

So basically you didn't even try and were very impatent?

You may have had the upgrade code put on the account, but if your area has not yet been enable for the upgrade - you won't get the new speed yet

If you register and your area can do the new speed you will get it within a couple of days.

If you register and your area can't yet do BB M 10Mbit the only way you will get 10Mibt now is by upgrading to BB L

Also a £2 price rise in 2 years is hardly that bad now is it?

No I wasnt impatient. This is not the first time I have spoken to customer services about this. Through experience I have found that waiting politely gets you no where. Had the site given the expected dates for upgrade, perhaps the further contact with Virgin would not be necessary. But thats what you are told as you quite rightly quote, register and you will be told when your upgrade is expected, only the site dosnt tell you this.

You dont know the circumstances of my distrust of customer services as I didnt relate it on this forum, there was no need, had you knowledge of the past farces perhaps you would think differently. I know you work for Virgin and are very helpful on this site usually, and not all staff are the same there are good as well as bad, unfortunately I have had a great deal of experience with the bad. As I said customer services told me that if I register I will then be told when the upgrade will be done probably within the next 2 months not the 2 days you mentioned. An email received also said that I should register when I receive the email telling me to, I have not received this so far. So I would still be waiting if I took them at their word. Luckily my area is enabled so the upgrade has worked straight away. I only proceeded to contact Virgin as the site didnt do what it was supposed to to.

Question about the Ambit 256 modem

The send light, is it supposed to flash even though the computer is completely switched off?

The enet and send continually blink when the computer is on, but the enet stops blinking when the comp is off, but the send continues to blink, is this right for the send light to blink all the time even when PC is off at the mains?

Check your postcode for 50Mb here:

I can confirm that I am in a 50Mb area and have already received the upgrade to BB M 10Mb (on my old modem not the new one I am still awaiting).

:confused:If an area can`t do do BB M 10Mbit...how can it suddenly do 10Mbit if someone upgrades to BB L, and pays the extra per mth :confused:

Bit of difference between one person paying up and being pushed from 2 to 10Mbit and about 65% of all subs in an area going from 2 to 10Mbit.

So you'd have no problems with being pushed to 10Mbit early and getting no more and possibly less speed than you did on 2Mbit?

It'll be ready when it's ready. Until the needed upgrade work is done it's a very bad idea to release the uplift.

The difference isn't 5GBP/month, it's 2 I believe though don't quote me on that. Either way I'm pretty sure M on its' own was 18GBP/month and L is 20.

You guys are even more impatient than the 4-10 and 10-20 upgrades and they were over a much longer period of time.

Virgin's fault for blowing sunshine up your bums for months on end about the uplift though I guess.

To simplify.

1 person out of say 400 going 2 to 10Mbit = no worries.
Potentially 300 of 400 going 2 to 10Mbit = a potentially seriously big increase in demand on capacity which could grind the local network those 400 share to a halt. Customers who were previously on L and XL won't like only being able to get 2Mbit because M customers jumped up and down until they got upgraded early.

EDIT: I wonder if 'old' L customers are getting pushed to the DOCSIS 3 equipment already or if all tiers are getting load balanced across everything?

Never ceases to amaze me how "you guys" jump to conclusions, and are apparently unable to give a reply without resorting to childish comments..

I was asking a civil question..apparently it is to much to expect a civil answer

And in answer to your question......no, I would not have a problem with being pushed to 10Mbit "early"..no way could it be any slower than my present speed.

Being civil is one of the few things in this world that costs nothing....

Yes it could be much slower than your present speed believe me.

I am not the one with the attitude and was quite civil, if abrupt which is no more than your pithy comment regarding cost having anything to do with timescales merited.

Sorry, but I agree with other 2 posters, in that you did come across as not being very civil and at times derogatory. Try to imagine yourself on the receiving end of your posts! How do you know they are impatient (an assumption perhaps!) - maybe they would just like to know 'when' the upgrades are occuring as paying customers, that would appear reasonable and civil to me.

Why should I believe you, you are obviously so full of your own self importance that truth probably does not come into it..you even assume to know my present speed.

If that is your idea of no attitude and being civil, then it is probably best you stay hidden behind a keyboard.

However, I have better things to do than swap pleasantries with a child in "mens" clothing...so I will wish you a pleasant time at school next week..and whilst you are there ask your teacher what attitude/civil means..

You're very immature, if you cannot handle a little confrontation. If you're here, you're going to be assumed to be on 2Mb or the upgraded 10Mb, simple as.

Given that you're posting asking when upgrades from 2 to 10Mbit will happen in your area I'll hazard a wild guess that your speeds are around the 2Mbit mark. If they don't make 2Mbit due to a fault or other issues they certainly aren't going to make 10Mbit given that it's exactly the same network delivering both and the only difference between them is some settings on a couple of routers. If your broadband is slower than 2Mbit it will not go much if any faster if a setting is changed to say your maximum speed has gone up.

Then maybe as paying customers they should consider simply asking Virgin instead of one of them implying that Virgin are artificially holding the upgrade back so that they can make a few extra pounds for a couple of months from people who may or may not upgrade to the next tier up while waiting for the upgrade.

Here's a suggestion for people who are really, really, really impatient for 10 meg. I realise it may be scary but bear with me. Pay for it.

I think you missed my point - which was the way you come across. Just look at your last statement, its sarcastic and disrespectful! I do not recall reading that anyone had infered that VM are artificailly holding back the upgrade. Your post appears to be based on assumption rather than fact! Quite, and if people don't stop acting like children and keep on posting petty little digs at each other I'm going to start banging heads together.

This is a support forum, if you don't like the advice you receive then ignore it - please remember though that all advice is given freely, nobody gets paid to be here, but there are a lot of very knowledgeable people on this forum who help people because they can and because they want to.

Alienating those people isn't going to get your anybody's problems solved any more quickly.

It has nothing to do with your computer and OS, it may be your Cable Modem.

I have been told by VM that as soon as I get a new computer I will see faster speeds, and that is probably because of the older ethernet card I have.

Just to check, after registering for upgrade virgin site said i would need replacement for my ntl:250. Well 5 days passed so i gave CS a ring. They have now said that they wont be sending a ambit 256 out as the ntl:250 is already capable, which is fine by me. So what happened to VM getting everyone on the same modem?

That's strange, I'm using an ntl:250, and even when I called (various times), there was no mention at all about replacement modem(s)

I assume must just be a glitch on the website, either way it saves me waiting in for a modem to be delivered

Whatever they are doing is starting to work!, check this out:

*UPDATE*

Just ran the test again and it hit 5 for a minor second then went back down... here is thats final result:

If ordered through the website it can take 10 working days plus to arrive.

Hi,

It seems that the age of my computer may be one of the reasons for the fluctuating speed test results. I was slightly happier getting the 6.17 earlier.

The NIC that I installed myself was done a few years ago, but I spoke to VM tech dept and told them I had a 32bit PCI 10/100M Ethernet Adapter, and they said that it would cope with the 10meg upgrade speed.

One thing I wanted to ask is their any configuration I could possible change in the network folder for this adapter than may help with the speeds. just a thought.

Thanks.

I'm receiving 10Mb the same on an seven year old system (long, :O) than the system I built four months ago, I'm sure your NIC is fine.
I'm using a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC (It's super old, works fine)

Rather than keep hammering the network, may I suggest folks just look in their modem to see what speed is set:

http://root:root@192.168.100.1/P_operation.htm

Note that Internet Explorer may well baulk at the username and password in the link. For details about how to stop this happening see:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/834489

Alternatively, just log into the modem and manually enter 'root' for both the username and password. Look under 'Operation Configuration' for the speed settings:

http://192.168.100.1/

iv never had very good speeds from speedtest.net
got one of my best results today on mybroadbandspeed.co.uk

still trying to work out which network setting gives best results

10/Half Duplex gives stable speed but can drop quite badly at busy times of day
Auto results in 100/dont know the duplex, that gives good general results and fast loading webpages
but can be a bit unstable and sometimes doesn't hit top speed

if anyones interested iv found the amount before throttle is 1750mb after 4pm in my area, 1gb better than the official limit :)

I don't mean to be rude, but the speedtest results, modem logs and downstream results from operation config of the modem are all relative to the 2Mb-10Mb upgrade.

Ah, thanks for pointing that out again, I didn't notice that.
Yeah, they're both 10Mbps, I do remember however in March, someone posted a thread here about them receiving 10Mb instead of 2Mb, and their downstream rate was 10242000 and not the usual 10Mb 10240000, and he/she was in one of the trail areas for the 2Mb-10Mb uplift. I hope someone more knowledged can inform you on why you're downstream rate differs. :erm:

Thanks, I hope someone will be able to tell me why my downstream rate differs, as at the moment it is 10242000 and not the usual 10240000, mine ending in 2000, and other users reporting it as ending in 0000

All fine as Motorolas do not show configs the same as any other modem Virgin supply you may see it in the logs if not encrypted.

I would recommend you swapping that 4100 as it will start to struggle on 10Mb.

I have found that it is the Avast local host that may well have been slowing down the speeds, as when I have the setting set to Direct connection to the internet the speeds are much higher.

Is it safe to have this setting?

It's not safe to keep obsessing over speeds, no, it can lead to insanity. Might be well worth opening a separate thread for your speed issues rather than posting them in this one (amongst others).
