It's very frustrating when they say "If you're a digital viewer ...", which I am, but I don't have the feature that those in other areas or on other platforms do have.

What is the reason for the absence of BBC News Multi-Screen in ex-NTL areas anyway? Surely the STB can't be the problem so it must be this Bromley/Langley platform business then, is it?

Discovery is to launch a new channel called 'Discovery Shed' next month, it has been announced.

The new service, which goes live on March 20, aims to be "the place for men who like good old practical activities to escape to".

The new addition takes the number of distinct channels in Discovery's UK portfolio to 12.

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/broadcas...d-channel.html

Story from Digitalspy.

Media Boy thinks: unless Discovery Shed is an new name for Discovery Realtime Extra it may not launch on Virgin TV.

Totally agree every time i hear of a new channel about to launch my heart sinks when 9 out of 10 times it will be sky only. Granted some of the channels that launch are not worth having but a lot of them are.

it's just so annoying that we miss out on a lot, even if an individual thinks they're not worth it anyhow. But that's not the point - a certain channel might not appeal much to me so i think it's not worth having, but it might appeal to another... iyswim? There's no excuse, cable should get the channels. its nothng to do with sky or virgin it to do with teh broadcaster they only need to pay for a epg slot on sky and need to negeotie amunt they want virgin to pay them for the channel and sometime sthey are quite unrealistic

huxleypiguk 22-02-2009 20:42

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

I do think folks don't get how these channels are launched. An epg slot costs a tiny amount but Virgin have to pay for the channels. Of course they will go to Sky first, it's a lot more simple to just set it up and away you go.

If it was a level playing field then I would agree, but it's a bit like Man U playing Merthyr Town with Merthyr having their legs tied together !

That's all very well, however there's a long history of stuff not coming. Sci-fi and History channel wait was years on Telewest. As was the extra movie channels. Still waiting for TCM2 here, it's nearly 3 years! A couple of months is understandable, things measured in years is not, that's why people are so cheesed off on the HD issue too.

We always have this problem with new channels coming, All Sky viewers have this luck, that when a new channel comes out, it goes onto Sky.

This is why VM are so far behind in the media business, each time l switch on Sky, there is a new channel, but with VM you have to wait months or even a few years, all this talk of new channels coming on, so where are they.

I was told by an engineer, that we have the tech' to get as many channels as possible.

Have to agree 100% !
Eventually, i suppose it'll all fall back on their shoulders when more and more ppl leave to sign up to FreeSat or even Freeview with future HD? Like you say, a few months at most, but years... wow so bad :-(

If, for example, a channel is free-to-air or even free-to-view, does that speed up the process of getting it on VM, bandwidth permitting, or does as much paper have to be signed and money change hands?

Would, for example, Channel 4 +1 have been in that category?

I doubt that engineers, Sky or VM, intentionally lie to customers. They are usually just overzealous, ill-informed or misinformed guys and gals wishing to impress.

It is true there is the technology to get a lot more channels. It is something people spend a fair bit of time on here speculating about. It's just VM are extremely poor at doing this with respect to tv.

as others have said it isn't to do with the technology but carriage deals. Due to the the way VM work they have to pay the broadcaster to appear on VM.

I don't know why VM don't just control the network like they do now but make the broadcasters pay for an EPG slot like they do on Sky and then carry the channel that way. It would surely make things more simple and also generate more money but then again I don't work for VM and i'm sure there is a business reason for this.

I was thinking of creating a HD thread on here to move some of the discussion about viewing numbers and differences with Sky into a proper thread does anyone think that would be a good idea ?

demented 23-02-2009 14:49

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

It is actually to do with the technology too. There really isn't the bandwidth until analogue is switched off. Once it is there are all kinds of technologies that could be deployed to get upto perhaps 100 HD channels one day.

I think another thread is a good idea.

Indeed. Already signed a contract with BT Vision (I don't have it so have no idea whether it's already on there or not) so I'm hopeful of that one in 2009. Just hope it isn't like with ITV where contractual negociations supposedly took an entire year.

If virign made there system completely open like sky then woukld have to pay for the bandwidth to caRRY The channels but sky doesnt the broadcast rents teh space on a satillette.

but i am not sur ewhy virign does not charge for epg slot and capicty slot

Chris 23-02-2009 15:24

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

Sky's system is not completely open. Sky's system more or less consists of an EPG and an optional encryption deal.

Broadcasters deal with Astra or whoever else is available to get their channel on air, then they pay Sky to include the channel in the Sky EPG. If the broadcaster wants to make money from subscriptions, then it also signs up to Sky's encryption service and gets a place within one of the entertainment packs. But encryption is not necessary; the only thing that's required in order to get a decent level of penetration in the UK is the EPG slot. Broadcasters are happy with this because their satellite broadcast is available to every home.

Virgin's network is not analagous to a satellite broadcast. It is available only to cabled homes. This alters the balance of power - Virgin is more like a magazine editor, paying freelancers for the copy he needs to fill his pages.

Media Boy you might have wrong information on this one. I just spoke to 2 different advisors at Virgin, one at tech support, and the other at general enquires. Both told me they have no updates on there computers regarding ITV on demand coming to Virgin Media tomorrow, and if it was to launch tomorrow the staff would be aware of this, and they have been told nothing.

Not saying my sources are correct either, but 2 staff members from 2 different departments related to Virgin tv did not have a clue to when the service would started rolling out.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

No ITV Net Player here yet in Aylesbury/Watford on ex-NTL/ex-CW with Pace standard V Box. Perhaps it is a geographical rollout or perhaps it is a platform (i.e. ex-NTL, ex-Telewest) issue. If you are posting an "I do/don't have it yet" remark then please specifiy location, platform (i.e. ex-NTL, ex-Telewest), if you know it, and even STB type. Thanks.

Maybe they named it ITV Net Player because ITV Player was too similar to iPlayer or maybe they just wanted it to sound internetty. I hate it - i-this and e-that and they don't always mean the same thing. My father in law mistakenly refers to High Definition as HDi because his Peugeot is a Diesel Injected and now cars and other things have e prefixes/suffixes because they are economical or environmentally friendly.

Perhaps (THIS THREAD) would be a more appropriate place to discuss whether or not you're getting the ITV Player yet.....

The rollout is being split up over a few days.

Knowsley Platform 24th February
Langley Platform 25th February
Bromley Platform 26th February

So don't panic if you don't have it today.

What are you talking about?

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

I suspect Joff simply didn't appreciate the significance of 'Knowsley', 'Langley' and 'Bromley'.

For the uninitiated:

Knowsley = The super-headend serving digital TV to ex-Telewest areas.
Langley = Ditto, for some of the ex-NTL areas
Bromley = Ditto, for ex-NTL areas that previously belonged to Cable & Wireless

All are named after the town or district in which the super-headend is physically located.

Excellent, thanks. Patience is the key then.

What is Knowsley? I was only aware of Langley and Bromley and even then I'm not completely sure of their history end technical differences. If it's not too OT, perhaps someone could explain. I know that there are differences betweeen ex-Telewest, ex-NTL (ex-CW) and ex-NTL (non-ex-CW). Is that it?

As there are several places in the country with these names, would you care to elaborate on which ones they are and the geographical areas they cover?

Chris 24-02-2009 14:43

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

Knowsley is in Merseyside, I don't know about the other two. In any case, where they are is irrelevant - Cable & Wireless, NTL and Telewest each had franchises all over the UK and to this very day these three legacy platforms still do serve homes all over the UK.

What you're really asking is, which regional franchises are attached to which super-headend ... perhaps a VM staffer with a few minutes to spare could list the franchises and where they're served from, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Back in the NTL days we used to tell subscribers to check whether BBC1 was at channel 101 (Langley) or 1 (Bromley) to find out which platform they were on. Many ex-Telewest subscribers will still have Telewest branded equipment in their homes. We explained it this way because it was quick and easy to check and because a definitive list appeared to be hard to come by.

Its actually quite easy ;)

Knowsley = Bill Area Reference 01-18

Bromley = Bill Area Reference 20-22

Langley = Bill Area Reference 24-31

EDIT: Bill Area Reference 27 is for Milton Keynes & Westmister accounts i.e. Analogue/ex-BT only

When will ITV Net Player improve it's program choice ? It's been on 24 hours now and from what I hear have the choice of programs on there is poor. If they dont hurry up and put more programs on there ITV may have to pull it's player due to lack of people watching it.

Regarding my above post.

Just joking lol.
