Re: Scores die in Israeli air strikes
I would suggest, the CFT put an end to this subject, before it blows up out of proportion, EVERYONE, is entitled to there views on this matter, which is tragic, with all the loss of life, but forum members, are forgetting the matter, that you don't slag off fellow members, for what they believe in, My belief is that there should be peace on both sides, But l don't think this will happen, just yet.
We need peace keepers in there, and sort it out. |

Personally, I reckon on 6 days, but it depends on what they achieve. We cant keep putting peacekeepers into every conflict. Its bad enough our forces have to fight in some rat hole on the other side of the world anyway, without putting them between these two factions. |

Re: Scores die in Israeli air strikes
I don't think Hamas would see the UN as a neutral peace force somehow. From their founding charter:-
"You may speak as much as you want about regional and world wars. They were behind World War I, when they were able to destroy the Islamic Caliphate, making financial gains and controlling resources. They obtained the Balfour Declaration, formed the League of Nations through which they could rule the world. They were behind World War II, through which they made huge financial gains by trading in armaments, and paved the way for the establishment of their state. It was they who instigated the replacement of the League of Nations with the United Nations and the Security Council to enable them to rule the world through them. There is no war going on anywhere, without having their finger in it."[102] Source:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamas |

Which? That the quote is genuinely from Hamas's founding charter, or that the statement itself is true? As far as the former is concerned, I only have Wiki to go on. As far as the latter is concerned, of course not, but I suspect we'll have to agree to disagree on that point.

Dr Gilbert, a Norweigen Dr has just confirmed on PRESS TV that the Israelis are using a new type of weapon that shreads the body in pieces. If the person lives they will develop Cancer. OK, heres a link to Defense Update. This is a factual military mag which outlines the effect these weapons have.
For the less "Clued up" guys, they are a small fragmentation bomb, designed to be fired at an object close to the enemy, where they will shatter & disable. http://www.defense-update.com/products/d/dime.htm You will find that this weapon has been designed specifically to reduce collateral damage. Not increase it. |

I'm no expert on weaponry, but it appears that the military are/have been looking at Tungsten as a (possibly) safer alternative to lead/depleted Uranium. It MAY not be as safe as they thought. However I do note that DIME weapons are SUPPOSED to reduce 'collateral damage'. (SMG beat me to it!) Anyway, I've yet to see any definitive proof that DIME weapons are being used in the current campaign (not saying they aren't, but I'd like to see something other than an Iranian TV source). |

The difference is that the dime weapon gives you a greater chance of survival, despite the damage. Do you think any soldier cares about the possibility of developing cancer, if he survives a hit???? Matey, when your in close vicinity to a nail bomb or hesh, theres nothing left to develop cancer. One of the reasons this type of weapon was designed, is to take out the "concealed" enemy. You know, saying things like "Not only that, this weapon goes into the atmosphere, and people who were not effected by the initial blast would get cancer." does not enhance your arguments. |

A more recent U.S. Department of Health study in 2005 found that HMTA shrapnel rapidly induces rhabdomyosarcoma cancers in rats.[4] The tungsten alloy carcinogenicity may be most closely related to the nickel content of the alloys used in weapons to date. However, pure tungsten and tungsten trioxide are also suspected of causing cancer and other toxic properties, and have been shown to have such effects in animal studies. [5]" |

Re: Scores die in Israeli air strikes
Just to put the tungsten alloy weapon issue to bed I think the concern is that, for example: you could be injured by a conventional bomb and live a relatively normal life or you could be injured by one of these things with an increased risk of developing cancer. Not to mention the potentially nasty by products which may be left lying around if they're not cleaned up.

Re: Scores die in Israeli air strikes
Unfortunately, the Palestinian - Israeli conflict has been a problem since before 1947.
This link gives "a" history of events though it does admit that some of the facts are disputed. I'm not offering as a true or complete version but it does give some indication of the background and flavour of the conflict. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestine The British Mandate of Palestine pre 1948, the declaration of Independence by Israel in 1948 and the displacement and possible mistreatment of thousands of Palestinians at that time has generated an intense, ongoing hatred between Palestinians and Israelis and has created a festering wound that needs to be healed. The Palestinian unhappiness at the carving up of Palestine has, since the creation of Israel, led to attacks from various neighbours of Israel. Israel, with the assistance of the USA, has managed to fight off these attacks but it seems likely that these attacks will continue in some form or another until a mutually acceptable diplomatic solution is found and there is complete acceptance & tolerance of both a Palestinian state and an Israeli one. |

Re: Scores die in Israeli air strikes
I would say that Hamas are fighting for their freedom. After all during the 6 month ceasefire Gaza was still under siege by Israel. Granted, Israel did not fire rockets into Gaza, but they still blockaded it, restricted aid going in, did not allow the citizens in Gaza to work otside Gaza. Is that fair conditions for a ceasefire.
Just because terrorist is shorter than the term freedom fighter does not justify its use. On a slightly different point on Saturday morning Israel were claiming that 75% of the 350 people they murdered in Gaza were Hamas terrorists. At the same time it was reported that 70 of the dead were kids. Are Israel saying that everyone who is not a child in Gaza is a terrorist? . |

It is perhaps worth noting that, according to the Hamas founding charter, they are fighting to retain lands conquered by the muslims.
"Article Eleven: The Strategy of Hamas: Palestine is an Islamic Waqf The Islamic Resistance Movement believes that the land of Palestine has been an Islamic Waqf throughout the generations and until the Day of Resurrection, no one can renounce it or part of it, or abandon it or part of it. No Arab country nor the aggregate of all Arab countries, and no Arab King or President nor all of them in the aggregate, have that right, nor has that right any organization or the aggregate of all organizations, be they Palestinian or Arab, because Palestine is an Islamic Waqf throughout all generations and to the Day of Resurrection. Who can presume to speak for all Islamic Generations to the Day of Resurrection? This is the status [of the land] in Islamic Shari’a, and it is similar to all lands conquered by Islam by force, and made thereby Waqf lands upon their conquest, for all generations of Muslims until the Day of Resurrection. This [norm] has prevailed since the commanders of the Muslim armies completed the conquest of Syria and Iraq, and they asked the Caliph of Muslims, ‘Umar Ibn al-Khattab, for his view of the conquered land, whether it should be partitioned between the troops or left in the possession of its population, or otherwise. Following discussions and consultations between the Caliph of Islam, ‘Umar Ibn al-Khattab, and the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, be peace and prayer upon him, they decided that the land should remain in the hands of its owners to benefit from it and from its wealth; but the control of the land and the land itself ought to be endowed as a Waqf [in perpetuity] for all generations of Muslims until the Day of Resurrection. The ownership of the land by its owners is only one of usufruct, and this Waqf will endure as long as Heaven and earth last. Any demarche in violation of this law of Islam, with regard to Palestine, is baseless and reflects on its perpetrators." |
Re: Scores die in Israeli air strikes
I think it would be more surprising if Hamas didn't think they could justify their aim of re-taking all the land as Palestinian territory. But that simply serves to underline the point I was aiming at wee chaos - whatever Hamas are, they aren't 'freedom fighters'.

Credit to Sarkozy for taking some initiative on this: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009...rael-ceasefire Same as Russia, Nice having someone who is not tainted by anti-Western feeling that is willing to attempt to work towards a balanced and fair peace. I think it may be countries like France, and hopefully a more considered America, that could act as deal makers in any peace talks. Both sides must be getting tired of this. |
