I got a new modem from VM around December. Its a Virgin badged 255, which I think is compatible with 10Mb, according to VM website. I'll check the modem settings later tonight... |
Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
Just checked my modem config. The max downstream speed is 4096000 and the max upload speed is 400000. So I guess I haven't had the upgrade yet..

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
That upgrade scedule is a pile of *****.
It hardly ever gets updated, and when it does, it usually says it was upgraded 4 days before it actually was (on the say it was updated) |

I'm in wallasey (im guessing this is the baguley area) and i called up virgin not so long ago to ask about upgrading to 20mb (as it appeared to be £20 a month on thier website, i later found that this is for new customers who are also taking Virgin phone) but during this conversation virgin said my area will be done by the second week in march, im still waiting but fingers crossed im hoping it will be in the next couple of days.
i shall be speed testing alot this week, if i get the upgrade ill post the results, if not, i wanna know why they are telling me these things on the phone!! it might be an idea, if your waiting for the upgrade, to just ask them about the pricing of the 20mb and see if you can get info out of them about your upgrade to 10mb. it all seemed to me as if they were scared i would go looking to another company, and quickly told me when i would be upgraded, whether or not they have lied to me, remains to be seen! |

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
This might sound a silly question as I only found this place the other day and this thread yesterday.
But is the list the total list for the now to the end of summer upgrades or the ones they are currently working on in the next month or so?. It's just that I'm in Liverpool and wrongly assumed that we would have been done by now lol. |

There does seem to be some folk already on the upgrade though, that according to the schedule is still listed as "TBC". But the page hasnt been updated for over a FORTNIGHT now, so I suppose theres a lot that could have happened since then.
In some cases though they are not just slow...they are so slow they are going backwards. Last month Edinburgh was listed as 'Complete', but for a while now it's been 'TBC'. Would be nice if they kept the list updated bi-weekly and tried to get some target dates up for most areas. |

Have they stopped the upgrade altogether? There have been no update on VM's page since the 29the Feb and the CS people seems no wiser as to if it is still going on or not. May be VM's hit a snag and the program has been shelved.

VM always start upgrades at a slow pace. Starting with a few test areas (which were done last year), then upgrades are rolled out to several areas which is what is happening now. If all things are ok, the upgrades will increase in frequency, so by the time it comes to June/July you'll have multiple areas done at the same time. |
Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
hence the reason VM keep mentioning the summer alot, im starting to think its pointless checking my speed everyday, it'll be done when its done and im sure i will notice it too, only because i play alot of games so im always getting updates, add ons and demos from various sites.
although, i will deffinatly still post here if i get any news or get the upgrade, untill you get the upgrade u just gotta be patient i guess. |

I can only guess as there are LOAAADS of broadband subscribers in the manchester area, and actaul performance in manchester is, according to reports here, quite dire. Then VM would leave it until later, its the biggest and hardest job, so if they learn from any mistakes from smaller areas being upgraded, they can minimise issues when implementing in manchester as it could affect more customers. |

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
At least the list is showing several dates now. Dissapointed Liverpool still is not been given a date as of yet!!!.
Mind you the current 4mb is more than enough right now for my needs. Call me suspicious but I wander if the upgrade to 10mb is as much down to VM being able to better manage heavy downloaders and reduce there speeds\manage\cap there service even more to improve things for those on lower speeds as much as a marketing excercise?. What I mean the management service as it is now is easily open to bypass due to the peak hours or, what 4 to 9 is it?. Outside these hours nothing as such I gather. With the 10mb upgrade I'll bet they open the peak hours for 10mb users to something like 10am to 10pm. Then reduce your speed to 1mb!. In effect those who are heavy downloaders will mainly have a 1mb connection instead of 10mb connection from the 4mb connection they are currently on. They might not have said that yet but I'll bet they are thinking it or something similar. And we all think the upgrade is good for us?. I wander if they will have an option of staying on 4mb?. |

Hi mate,
I'm getting a similar thing and it been going on for over 10 days now. I have a 4MB line and its been great, little niggles once or twice but no great bother. I play online games (FB2142) and have had no problems. They started upgrading my line (and everyone who has 4MB) to 10MB for free, (this sounds great doesn't it :erm:) the only problem is my line now drops to 2.5MB in the evening and the gaming in the day if crap to say the least  I can download files from http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames/demos/ at 1170KB/sec but for some reason i have a really high ping while gaming and the bloody view jumps all over the place, quite annoying when playing FPS. I have had nothing but trouble from tech support and customer services who just make excuses and really have no idea Anyone else having this |

spoke to them last night and after they tried and tried to fob me off, the server is capping me. Something to do with the amount I download and playing online games, she said try not playing any game in the day and see if the server still caps you at night!
So all I've got to look forward to is a slow down in any game I play after about 20 mins, its a bloody rip off, I pay for 4MB but in the small print it says 'up to' 4MB so they have you by the b**ls. They gave me some bull about if I download at a fast speed then I slow other people's Internet down, how the hell am I overriding other peoples speeds? I am on some sort of priority line that nick's bandwidth off other users. Pack of lies me thinks. I'm gonna look for somewhere else that doesn't cap your speed! |

"Hopefully they won't just leave it at that and start tuning the network or load balancing or whatever they do, just upping the speed and not configuring the network to cope would be a bit silly. "
Well if they do upgrade us, and these are the speeds that we get, they will still be able to say that thousands or millions of people are on our "up to" 10mb service. they (VM) will use the numbers on the service, even if they get nowhere near the speed, to advertise that they are the biggest broadband provider in the speed bracket. I am by no means a disgruntled user (yet) as i get a solid 4mb connection in Birkenhead. As a business selling point it would be great advertising. Perhaps the 10mb will not suffer as many problems as the 20 seems to but get ready for it just in case. |
Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
In all honesty I never upgraded our connection from 2 meg to 4 meg fully expecting the connection to be 10 meg. Well I did wrongfully assume Liverpool would have been upgraded due to the hugh coverage of the area alone. But more like we really wanted the 4mb to suit our needs and the only £7 per month extra made sence as it allows 2 of us to get decent speeds at the same time rather than this main pc blocking the second pc when downloading.
The 10 meg upgrade will be welcome when it arrives here in Liverpool. But as I have said before and others I think, would prefer to stay on a full 4 meg connection that get 2 meg via a 10 meg connection!. |
