Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 4)

Just a little link for those that say NTL is falling seriously behind in the supply of broadband. How many times have we heard that 3Mb from NTL is not enough with ADSL giving up to 8Mb. The BT trials for their MAX services will not start until April and will only involve 2,000 lines with a select number of ISPs at a limited number of exchanges. If all goes well with the trial then above 2Mb may be available in something like 6 months time. There is an article at http://www.adslguide.org.uk/ that gives some details of the trials. One point to note though is
Quote:

BT Wholesale has also warned service providers to inform customers that data throughput may at peak times drop down to similar levels as you would expect on a 2Mbps service.
So if the trials are successful and if you live close enough to the exchange you may be able to get up to 8Mb/s but possibly only 2Mb/s at peak times.

So, who is falling behind? With NTL above 2Mb/s is happening now not a possiblity in 6 months time.

I used this link:

http://www.ntlworld.com/data-feeds/e...tierMigration/

to do the free upgrade from 750K to 2MB.

Did the whole thing in about 2 minutes.
1m 30s of that was try to remember my password :D

I'm an early adopter.
I bought a Motorola SB4100 SurfBoard for £150 (some years back now).
My CM access is still charged at £20 per month.

Oh, one more thing. Some people here need to stop whinging and show some respect for the NTL respesentatives here.

patience is a virtue....

ntl did say that the upgrades would be in Q1 2005 and that period is not yet over....

Users will be upgraded automatically in the near future, so why not just wait for this? Ntl will inform you before this takes place.

Just thought I'd add that Pace STB owners can call and request/order a Samsung STB (current dates for these to be installed are 4/5th April).

Can I just ask, the upgrades to 1mbit for Pace STB owners, what date has been set for it? (I personally got told 'within the next few evenings' by a CS guy).

Does anyone know if they have upgraded the Glasgow/Rutherglen area?

I noticed on the NTL server status site that we are due to recieve a loss or degraded network from 12am to 6am today. I have been online all night and I have had no connection probs or loss of service. Just wondering thats all.:)

Your IP is not that important, it's the MAC address of the SACM or STB that is registered against your account ;)

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 4)

Hi,

Just rang 0800 052 2000 and picked the option for package changes. There is an automated voice advising all SACM users to upgrade online, but nothing about upgrading STB users.

All I wanted was to upgrade to 1.5mbit from 750k so that I could have a Samsung, ready for my auto upgrade.

The nice guy on the phone instructed me there is no 1.5 any more and offered me 1mbit right now for a saving of £6 pcm. Not bad you can ring up and get a better service and get the price reduced!

We then discussed the rather low "soft" cap on the 1mbit and decided the 2mbit would be best suited for my heavy usage... He instantly put me on 1mbit (explaining that my pace stb will only support that) and booked in a pace to Samsung exchange for Tuesday, as it happens I already have Thursday booked off work so he rearranged for then...

So at this second (and tested) I am exactly 1mbit, with a Samsung box coming in 7 days which I was advised would instantly put me up to 2mbit. What quality service!

One difference I noticed on the STB, is if you press "page up" "page down" "blue", on the third screen, my QOS has changed from 'Silver' to 'stb-light'... Maybe something for you people waiting for auto upgrade could check for now and then.

I'm impressed.:nworthy:

BTW, im in the dreaded north Manchester ex-cwc area, right between Bolton and Bury.

Not really weird at all. NTL have started doing the upgrades but would be foolish to do their entire million plus broadband customer base in one go. Think of the situation that would ensue if there was a problem and it affected most or all of these customers.

NTL have not actively marketed the new speeds so the few that have upgraded up to now have only been able to do so because of visiting sites such as this. Most broadband customers don't even know these sites exist. There is nothing on the ntlworld site regarding the new speeds other than by following the upgrade your speed links and new customer links. Existing customers are unlikely to visit those pages.

There will be no new customers on the new speeds yet as the earliest they could have signed up would have been the 8th March and there is at least a 7 day wait for installation. Having said that, there could be new customers being installed now that signed up before the new speeds were announced who will probably have the new speeds from the start, much to their surprise.

Lots of people reporting here that online upgrading does not seem to work for them, well it did for me when I visited:

It took about five minutes and no reboot needed.

One of the few times that I have been happy with NTL!!!

just imagine the havoc in technical support and customer service if they did the upgrades all at once and as a result of this 1 in 15 customers followed up by calling in, can you imagine the queues :o

Hopefully this post doesnt get lost in here.

Im in Belfast and still waiting on the upgrade (SACM), I understand a timetable has been set for the roll out of the speeds. Since Tuesday I have been patient enough and still am prepared to wait another few days at least.

My query is - what is the best option: Wait to be upgraded automatically or upgrade manually via the website??

I notice on the NTL Service Status page that work has been carried out on the broadband network in Belfast on Tuesday, Wednesday and this morning. Work is also planned for tomorrow morning between Midnight and 6am. Does this mean that it is highly likely that I will have automatically received the upgrade tomorrow sometime???

Finally, how has anyone on here from Belfast/Northern Ireland fared in this BB Speed Upgrade - have you been auto-upgraded or did you contact NTL to do it??

Just a thought??

James

That answers my question, probably!! I live in Ellesmere Port and I tried to upgrade online to the 3Mb BB (I use a Cable modem) and it said that it could not upgrade and to phone NTL. Look's like I will have to wait for the upgrade to take place next month - hopefully!!! :(

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 4)

Guys,

I think what would be of great use is building some kind of list of areas of the country and whether you have got your 3mbit / 2mbit working, also being able to tell people what your local ntl server is (mine is in Hertford/Ware and I am on the Luton main server).

If we build up a list of areas and local ntl servers that have 3mb fully available then it will help people understand better and saves calling TS, just a thought.... if someone else is in the same area as myself and has not been able to get 3mbit yet I have, then they can take that to TS.

James79 10-03-2005 09:56

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 4)

Just went onto the upgrade page and completed the process (seemingly successfully).

A page said that my SACM would reboot causing a temporary loss in service - anyone know how long this takes?? Or would the best option be to reboot myself?

Just another thought??!!

James

I noticed that too.. zero speed increase in web browsing. In fact going from 300k to 750k was little difference either really so I wasn't particularly surprised. Sites which were sluggish to respond before are still sluggish to respond; presumably the bottleneck is at their end, not mine (or ntl's).

I called CS last night as the auto upgrade page did nothing for me. Was told he could do it there and then and my 1.5MB would be 3MB in half an hour.

This morning it still hasn't been done, so called CS again. Now I'm told that there's no such thing as requesting the speed upgrade, and that it'll happen automatically at some point!

What a FARCE

This Morning I phoned NTL CS (option 5) to request an upgrade to 3mb, I spoke to a very nice lady (sounded like a Gordie) who said she would have to send an email to Tech Support (i think) anyway after a lot of typing, I will be upgraded in a couple of days (Hopefully) ;)

Just rung Customer Services and was talking to this guy for like 15 minutes. he was telling me about caps and aload of other stuff.. he said he cant manually be upgraded from him but the updates are going through manualy. umm in my opinion that dont make sence :) then next he sed ur update will be automatic between 8th march to the 14th march because that was the official date so after a nice conversation with this chap he said to save ur self alot of bother with C/s u could always wait a while:) i agreed because after all this update is free of charge so i aint losing out on anything but the speed :erm:

Not just the communicating. People these days expect things to happen now and have lost the power of patience. The I want it now brigade is becoming a problem.

Just a thought??

I have a couple of mates in Derry who foned CS and got their upgrades to 2mb in less than 5 minutes, does seem to be the luck of the draw tho.

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 4)

I just upgraded using the link on the ntlworld homepage from 750K to 2Mb.

Booting the modem happened in about 3 mins, literally.

Just done a speed test and downstream is coming up at 2073Kbps so I'm happy enough.

Only thing is, when upgrading on the web, it asks you to transfer to a new payment plan... couple of questions about that:

1) is this the beginning of a new 12month contract?
2) currently on my bill we were only paying £19.99/month for 750K as we got a student deal... is next months going to go up to the new £24.99 as I agreed to 'change' the service when upgrading?

Thanks,

Stuart

**edit: sorry, forgot to add that im in the nottingham area

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 4)

 As a few people have mentioned i think the free upgrade via customer service is pick of the draw, my partner phoned last night and was told he had to await a letter from NTL before he could be upgraded, I phoned this morning and said by visiting this site i have noticed that some people seem to have been upgraded in my area already, and was there any chance of my connection through Samsung STB being upgraded from 1.5 to 3mb, she did a bit of typing and asked me to hold the line for a minute so she could try and push it through for me, seconds later she advised me to completely reboot, which I did, then rebooted the pc and had to re-provision/register for the upgrade, then another restart of STB and PC and WooHoo I'm on 3mb. I'm in Warrington Cheshire BTW so as you can see this area is done.

 :)

Sounds like your modem could have gone into pre-reg state? A NTL techie was telling me about these problems yesterday - and advising me not to upgrade.

Not saying its that, but could be a possibility.

Mcgue 10-03-2005 13:49

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 4)

seems like nobody can mend my problem.

Rang about 5 times, I'm not even fussed if CS don't want to upgrade me on the phone, but the message about my modem not being registered to me on the upgrade page is my concern.

After ringing 3 times, first being told its automatic, the second being told its automatic and that the error is perfectly normal (I tried telling the guy it didn't sound very normal) and the third time the nice lady said she'd do my modem there and then, and to reboot in 15mins or so and the problem with the account was missing some details. And the modem is registered to the account.

That was last night.
Still no change upgrade, but still getting the same error message about the account. I don't even mind waiting for it to be automatic, I'm quite concerned now.
Is there anyone I can PM who is able to help me as it seems nobody understands the problem.

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 4)

Well I rang up CS today and had some more progress... The representative actually had a clue what I was talking about!!

She said that I can't have my STB (I have an old Pace one) upgraded until April 4th and to phone back to make an appointment around March 21st.

I asked her if I can have my speed upgraded to 1mb in the mean time and she said "It's a bit risky 'cos the boxes are only rated up to 1mbit" So I said "do you fancy risking it?" and she did.

So I went from 750K to 1Mbit, and hopefully doubling it in April :)

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 4)

I called up this morning asking about the box swap thing, seeing as i have a black pace box, and read on here that we need these to be swapped out, if you want to take the full advantage of the update. Phone up was told that earliest i could get a box swap out was April 5th, and that they could put my connection up to 1MB till that time.. was told to wait 2 hrs, then do a complete reboot.

Went out for 3 hrs.. came back did the complete reboot as was told to, had didly squat for connection.

Called Tech support: 5 rings later am speaking to em. Turns out that they had hit my box, with 1mb, but deleted a file. 5-10 mins later still on the phone, seems something is screwy with my router, guy i am speaking really is trying to help..... Give up connect straight to my computer and i am connected.

I am quite shocked at the speed my call was answered.
I didnt think NTL did tech support for Routers.

Seems to me like NTL's customer service is getting alot better!

WELL DONE NTL!!

Thanks for the Rep's peeps but honestly it was nothing, i would have just got my friend who I worked with to push a couple through as his redundancy was delayed as he accepted a secondment into the accounts department for 3 months, sadly he will be leaving at the end of this month and thats another good guy NTL have lost.

Also to DarthYoda, yes if you can access the autoreg site and no others then try re-provisioning.
