I'm not sure if NTL are doing work around my area on the connection speeds but my internet keeps going down. Not sure if it's just my router either :erm:

If all this is true why is there nothing on the NTL website? Surely they would be advertising it to attract more customers :D

Don't know if it's been posted in this thread yet or not, but I just posted this into a new (now closed thread). Seems appropriate for the last few comments:

Quote:

Whilst enjoying my standard heart attack on opening my NTL bill this month I noticed an offer leaflet that they had slipped into the envelope. This offer is for 300k broadband for "£1 5.99 a month for your first year". The small print says that this is a 12 month minimum term contract available until 28/02/2005.

I'm just wondering what happens to all of those new customers with 12 month contracts when the NTL speed change occurs? Firstly I'd imagine they'd be ****ed, secondly, will they be allowed to upgrade at a price like everyone else?

Tell you something though... It's obvious now that we're not going to see the speed upgrade until after the 28/02/2005. That's pretty much guaranteed.

Re: [Merged] *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please

yes its been pulled back, but I think if it gets pulled back much further NTL could be done for false advertising because when they first announced these speed upgrades you can bet they pulled in extra customers from it on the basis these customers were going to get these nice speeds, but now these customers will have up to 50% of their contracts without the speeds available.

From the replies that I've had to my previous posts NTL don't care about current customers do they.

Difficult to see how they could be done for false advertising, when they haven't advertised it yet!

I have been helped with my choice I wasn't sure if I would upgrade or not as it would cost £25 but after seeing that NTL are cutting back again on what is essential for me to have an internet services running as smooth as possible also a phone line that I can still use over the weekends even if the cab has loss of power as its sorted regardless of time. Why should I give them a one off payment of £25.. think about it how many customers if they all pay the £25 how much bonus will NTL have for the bosses.

NTL SPEED UPGRADE which area & when upgraded.

Please keep this thread as a new fresh one about this subject (ntl broadband speed upgrade)....Iam tired of having to trawl through endless page after page in the other similar named thread :( I imagine others will be too, no ?

Anyway, we all know the speed upgrades are taking place roundabout now or in the very near future :)

What iam hoping to find out is >>>
Could people please take the time to post in here when thier area has been upgraded, I.E - Glasgow, London etc etc...then that way it will help all of us who are desperate to know when the upgrades are taking place in OUR area, ya know what I mean guys ??? makes sense, doesnt it ? :tu:

cheers ;)

Re: NTL SPEED UPGRADE which area & when upgraded.

This thread will be merged shortly with the thread we already have running on the speed upgrades-that's why it's called "*ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please" ;)

Sorry, but we have to keep this subect tightly locked, as otherwise there will be people who are too lazy to search just creating new threads left, right, & centre (that's why we did it in the 1st place)

I'm sure people will be posting ASAP so that they can be the 1st to tell us all that they've been upgraded, but as Paul has said already-nothing is happening yet.

What are ntl doing to compete with the 8mb adsl that will be available from BT by the autumn? Paying £25 to upgrade to 1,2,3mb seems like a waste of money if you are near enough a BT exchange to get 8mb.

I suspect they'll offer a 8mb service if/when BT's 8mb becomes a clear and present danger.

I just spoke on phone to a manager in ntl HQ Glasgow, although he didnt know when the glasgow upgrades will go ahead he did admit that other parts of the uk have already got the wheels in motion though.
He also says there is NO mention of any admin fee (£25) and caps wont be enforced heavy duty like some of you are saying, infact caps have always been in place with ntl broadband its just that they dont enforce them too much unless they find someone ripping the crap right out it, I.E- running a buisness using ntl broadband etc, they will come down heavy on idiots like that.
So I hope this info helps ease some pain till your upgrade comes along, I cant wait for it :) :) :)

sounds like poor internal communication as the official document we've all seen talks about a £25 fee. perhaps this is a fee but a 'token' fee which will be waived for the first 3 months as a 'special offer'.

Sorry didnt explain very well,:o he said that there would be a fee but wasnt sure how it was to be implemented as the previous post points out, how are we to know its there and we can upgrade unless they start an advert campaign or something?

Yes over 99% of customers have already been upgraded prior to any announcement, or indeed upgrade, and if you are one of the few not to have been done yet, then you really need to be on the list to be able to view the list that applies.

It is entirely possible that suddenly you will be informed of an upgrade, in which case you can consider yourself to be on the list, unless of course your speed suddenly increases without you being on a list of customers to be notified they are listed to be historically upgraded, further to them doing an upgrade.

ok, let's explain this again

NOBODY IS YET ON THE NEW SPEEDS

the work you are referring to is network upgrades to make the new speeds possible, this may, or may not, have happened in certain areas. When the new speeds are launched you will know about it. The official documentation (ie the investors report) states that there will be a £25 fee. Whether this will or will not be implemented i do not know- some say it will, some don't, choose to believe what you like.

Also with regard to capping, the official documentation states that there will be caps- again believe any other unofficial information that you wish to, but at the moment the only thing i would take as official is the press release and investors report. :)

no need to be rude - was only asking, my friends speed increased to over 300kbytes/sec. and i dont read every single post. see blueyonder anounced ages before the upgrades they gonna do it, ntl never do until the last minute and alot dident even know about it after the upgrades had happend last time.

Yeah getting advance notice of future improvements is indeed good PR.

Although I dont fault Telewest for doing things differently, I think NTL were smart to make us aware of where they were going to be taking us within a few months.

BT wholesale did a similar thing this week when they announced their plans for ADSL (possible) speed improvements over the next 12 months.

Re: [Merged] *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please

AAAAARGH

There have been no speed increases anywhere in the country, any prep work that has been done apart from resegmentation will have been done nationally not regionally.

This is getting really boring now having to disagree with vague people who in thomson's case have varied from sales staff, call centre staff, people at ntl HQ (Hook presumably?) and now ntl Glasgow.

I suspect that these upgrades will be released to all areas at the same time, and I have an idea of a date but sorry to disappoint I'm certainly NOT discussing it here.

Also I'd say that Telewest's way of doing things was better, amongst other things it saves annoying people making them wait, not to mention of course demonstrating competence and giving a good impression that the company has capacity to spare.

Ignition that was my point, NTL are not at fault for taking longer they are at fault for announcing it months before they can roll it out, they should have stayed quiet and announced it in march/april/may or whenever they plan to roll it out.

oh it is NTL after all, :Yikes:

didn't they re-define 'coming soon' as anytime in the next millenium

:erm:maybe the Q1 2005 announcement refers to the actual "time" that the button will be pushed to launch the new config files onto the systems and the Q1 is missing the year, after all NTL are famous for announcing 'stuff' either out of hours or at close of business on a weekend

Also to add to my questions that no one has answered. From what I gather, you'll need a new stb to cope with the faster speeds. So. If you don't know the network has been upgraded because it's not automatic and you have a pace stb will you ever know about speed upgrades? If so, how? I'm still waiting for ntl to tell me that the cable in the road that i subscribed to seven years ago is now in operation!!!

There is nothing going on that requires customers to do anything so just sit back and chill out until an announcement is made. You will hear about it on here as soon as the team know anything.

People will continue to ask the same questions no matter how clear the situation is made. If I had a pound for every time a question is asked that has been asked before and the answer given I would probably have enough to buy out NTL :D . Likewise if I lost a pound for everytime the search function was used I wouldn't lose much :D :D .

That is true people do ask Questions but if they was sent a E-mail saying so and so areas will be upgraded for testing, i am sure it will hold off alot of the Questions. Apologies if this has already been mentioned, in a cyber cafe in spain with a meter so I don´t have time to read all the thread but will the cutbacks affect the speed upgrades since it mentions "no network upgrades".
Also what is the maximum speed a pace box can handle and why is that since CM technology is quite old now, confused as to why it seems so limited.

JohnHorb 06-02-2005 13:13

Re: [Merged] *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please

No indication (yet!) that the cutbacks will affect the speed upgrades.
The maximum speed the Pace boxes will handle is 1 Meg (according to some posts here, they will actually handle more, but with decreasing reliability, so NTL will replace with Samsung for anything faster). AFAIK the limiting factor is processing power, as the box has to handle DTV as well as Broadband. I understand the Samsungs hace two processors, thus can handle the higher speeds, even though the technology and software is basically the same.

NTL need to get these speed increases out asap and then announce another increase to at least 8mb. By the autumn I will be able to get 8mb from BT and UKonline, as well as 4mb including line rental from Bulldog. I am sure there are other areas, apart from London, where there will be this level of competition soon.

It must be nice to be able to predict the future so accurately. But, if you are right, will those higher speeds be subject to any restrictions that may affect how you can use the connection. Don't forget that even today the majority of high bandwidth users on so called unlimited services could have their contracts terminated for breach of terms and conditions. Think about it. ;)

You didn't think hard enough! :)

UKonline may have a 500 gb cap but if they terminated the contract of every user who breached their AUP they would lose the majority of their heavy users. Look at section 1 of the AUP.

You agree not to use the Service to send or receive materials or data which is or may be in violation of any law or regulation or which is defamatory, offensive, abusive, indecent, obscene, or constitutes harassment or in breach of confidence, privacy, trade secrets or in breach of any third party Intellectual Property rights (including copyright) or in breach of any other rights or has any fraudulent purpose of effect.

You are prohibited from storing, distributing or transmitting or permitting the storage distribution or transmission (whether intentionally or otherwise)_of, any unlawful material through the Service. Examples of unlawful material include: direct threats of physical harm; hardcore and child pornography; and copyrighted, trademarked and other proprietary material used without proper authorisation. You may not post, upload or otherwise distribute or permit the posting, uploading or distribution (whether intentionally or otherwise)_of copyrighted material on our servers without the consent of the copyright holder. In the event UK Online becomes aware of any breach of this Clause 1 UK Online may take any of the actions outlined in Clause 8 below. The storage, distribution, or transmission of unlawful materials could also lead to UK authorities alleging criminal liability.

The important fact that many are overlooking when talking about caps is that ALL ISPs have clauses which they can use to terminate the contracts of most heavy users.

Oooops, I have probably just breached UKonlines copyright with that quote. ;)

I just want to download files quicker. NTL has been very reliable, only one outage since I have had it, but they need to remain competitive with download speeds or people will use adsl.

ianathuth please dont accuse heavier users to be all into piracy their is different uses for the traffic and its each user's right for privacy of what they use their connection for, you are not the internet police and you are not there to judge other's. If an ISP has proof of a user breaking the AUP then of course they can take the matter further with that customer.

Chrysalis, AFAIK I have never accused all heavy users of piracy so please don't say that I have unless you can point me to a post where I have. The truth of the matter though is that most heavy users use their connection in contravention of their ISPs AUP and I don't think anyone could argue with that. Any user can judge the use of others if that use has the potential to affect their own use.

What I have just done is to make clear the fact that all ISPs have conditions which prohibit certain types of use and not just NTL. Many of the people who have complained about caps have admitted what they use their connection for and would be in breach of every ISPs conditions whether the ISP is capped or uncapped.

Over the past couple of years I have heard every reason under the sun that you can use any broadband speed to its full potential 24/7 without breach of any legal obligation. Whilst theoretically it may be possible, practically I would think that you would be hard pushed to make up a couple of football teams from the prople in this country who actually do. Read carefully what I have just said before commenting on this.

This misses the point, what are NTL doing to compete with the 4mb and 8mb products that will be available everywhere by autumn?

BT are trialling 8mb dsl in April for release in the autumn. Distance to the exchenge will still be a factor but it will be rolled out nationwide.

But if it's a BT service, you can pretty much guarantee it'll cost a lot of money. At least NTL are competitive when it comes to the price.

as ukonline will be doing 8mbit via easynet adsl equipment using LLU i would guess that any 8mbit bt offering would have to be competitvly priced with that.... at least in areas where both would be avalable

I'm in an area that can already get UKOnline's Broadband 8000 service. It's £39.99 per month.

However as I'm currently paying £20/month (new customer due to an NTL c0ck up cancelling my broadband when I cancelled my TV for Sky+) for what will be 2Mbps, I can't justify the extra £20/month for 8Mbps which I really don't need.

Would love it just for the kudos tho ;)

a lot of adsl isps do that u can normally give them a ring to get it unblocked you will need to give them the mx name of your mail server they will check it isnt an open relay and then they will say ok -

or use the pop3 connector :)

Re: [Merged] *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please

I think everywhere is an exaggeration, but it will be available in whats known as the internet hotspots (major cities), so if I am right most of the cherry picked areas that ntl and telewest have will have 8mbit adsl available by the end of the year. The problem here is it is quite obvious NTL wont even be able to compete, due to the shareholders holding them back. They have had to introduce the 40gig cap(not discussed here) and keep the proxies just to make the 3mbit feasible, result of cutting the engineers and upgrade work. So instead NTL are trying to compete in the only area they can and that is in the budget internet market, the bottom package is very competitive.

You are very lucky then i cant get it until next month i still canceld my ntl
going 2Mb ukonline for 29.99 then 8MB next month even though 500GB isent much a 3Mb with a 40GB cap isent worth it. the port thing is a shame but a small price to pay for such a good dl speed plus their modems are ads2/adsl2+ enabled so when the time comes you do not need to upgrade. adsl is definatly the way to go 50 years later ntl will offer 2MB. i would of orderd it ages ago if i could get the 8MB free router until the 21st to i dont see how anyone could pass up ukonline for ntl thats crazy

Re: [Merged] *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please

Or within about 2KM...

Approximate Ranges of ADSL products, obviously hugely dependent on other things:

Line Length (for loss in dB multiply by 10 and add 10)

2KM - 8Mbit (over 50% of those in BT enabled areas are in this bracket)
3KM - 6Mbit
4KM - 4Mbit
5KM - 2Mbit (97% success rate at this speed and distance)

Line length can be approximated as straight line distance from exchange multiplied by 1.4.

BT are trialling 8Mbit with a view to a nationwide release, not only urban areas. Should offer those who aren't able to avail themselves of LLU operators access to higher rated services and encourage more competition on speed with cablecos.

Distance from exchange is available from http://www.samknows.com - just go to availability checker and enter your postcode.

easynet arent a part of bt they got their own exchanges so its nothing to do with them you just need to use a bt line to connect....
plus when adsl2+ is out and all u cable users still on 1.5Mb while bt users with wireless modem and at the switch of a button speeds of up to 24Mbit.. i know where i would rather

thats why ntl's 40GB is no good for me i think ntl are good but i need faster and less/no cap. just waiting for the wireless modem from them now and ntl take a month to cancle so they said so will use that for xbox see how it gets on

i own a 100Mbit dedicated server so its not my home connection on ntls 1.5MB i think that much b/w is impossible in 2 days even if u leave it 48 hours running

from 100Mb to 8Mb is alot less but i am sure i could easily get through it, sending large digi cam videos to my cousins in cyprus who i see twice a year and such things like that make b/w go quick for me :)

'British Telecom has said it will double the broadband speeds of most of its home and business customers.

The increased speeds will come at no extra charge and follows a similar move by internet service provider AOL.

Many BT customers will now have download speeds of 2Mbps, although there are usage allowances of between one gigabyte and 30 gigabytes a month. The new speeds start to come into effect on 17 February for home customers and 1 April for businesses. '

From BBC (so is probably old news) - wonder if NTL speed increase will be here before then

Bt are offering 2mb adsl with 15gb cap for £24.99 from the 17th Feb. BT business broadband is £29.99, 2mb, no cap. NTL need to speed up there upgrade program. They should not charge £25 upgrade fee either though if you threaten to cancel I am sure they will waive it.

Shifting 1TB in 2 days as part of a warez hub (and don't even try to give me bull**** about it being legit traffic, I'm neither naive nor stupid) isn't really the average user, infact it's totally irrelevant for the purposes of this discussion.

Extreme bandwidth usage has no relevance to these issues at all, using 500GB a week is clearly an abnormal usage pattern, and imho those who do so can go and get themselves a dedicated box as they have no business doing that on a home or business broadband connection that isn't 1:1.

X-Box chipped by any chance?

Sorry to seem insulting but you're exactly the kind of user that no ISP wants and who ntl are hoping to be shot of with the capped upgrades.

The new packages from BT Are fabulous news, this kind of competition will spur on the progress of HSI in the UK and as they move to 2 - 8Mbps will encourage the cablecos and LLU operators to compete through innovation.

Nope hes measured it at 7.2 , which as he says he can live with for the price.
He would have had cable, but he did'nt want to worry about the cap, he thinks ukonline's cap is very generous.

He has the full 8Mbps synch, are you sure he's on the same exchange as yourself, 8Mbps is impossible at that distance.

If he has a line attenuation and SNR from his ADSL modem/router I'd be interested in seeing them.

He said his server has a 100mbit connection that gets through 1tb a month. Does that really warrant an accusation of illegal activity? There are plenty of things that could use that much bandwidth on a public http server.
