What’s the difference between this and the 2005 agreement? (besides the photo-opportunity)

https://www.armscontrol.org/factsheets/dprkchron

Quote:

September 19, 2005: The participants in the six-party talks conclude a joint statement of principles to guide future negotiations.

According to the statement, North Korea commits “to abandoning all nuclear weapons and existing nuclear programs and returning, at an early date, to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and to IAEA safeguards.” It also calls for the 1992 Joint Declaration of the Denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, which forbids the two Koreas from possessing uranium-enrichment and plutonium-separation facilities, to be “observed and implemented.” Washington affirms in the statement that it has no intention to attack or invade North Korea.

The statement commits the participants to achieving “the verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula in a peaceful manner” and says that the parties agree “to take coordinated steps to implement” the agreed-upon obligations and rewards “in a phased manner in line with the principle of ‘commitment for commitment, action for action.’”

North Korean State media are saying that Trump has agreed to lift sanctions.

https://news.sky.com/story/confusion...tions-11403122

Quote:

North Korea's state media has reported that Donald Trump has "expressed his intention" to lift crippling sanctions against the country - despite the US president saying that they will remain until "nukes are no longer a factor".

Donald Trump met Kim Jong Un for a historic summit at a luxurious Singapore hotel on Tuesday, with both leaders signing a deal regarding the "complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula".

But it had always been Mr Kim's goal to rid his country of US sanctions and, according to the state-run KCNA news agency, that is exactly what he achieved.

Following the "meeting of the century", KCNA said Mr Trump had agreed to lift sanctions as relations improve, as well as halt US-South Korea military exercises and offer security guarantees.

I think it may be a little early to be claiming there is no longer a nuclear threat, considering NK still have their nuclear weapons and ICBMs.

Also while I support the idea of peace talks North Korea are a horrible regime that kills thousands of their own citizens so being quite so complementary of them before they’ve conceded anything is a bit OTT

If Trump did agree to that (though I doubt it given that Trump is likely to have said he has only to renege on it) then there is hope for May yet that she could get a deal out of Trump - though whether she has the diplomatic prowess as Kim Jong Un, who knows. (No I don't think anything of him, just that little of her).

In regards to May vs Kim...I don't see May as doing anything near as vile / evil as Kim.

When it comes to negotiating though, Kim has gotten Trump to meet him, talk about his requests and gain sanctions relief.

May can't even get a face to face with him, at a conference.

He sees May as a little child.

Perhaps he sees Kim standing on a pile of bodies to meet him as a sign of respect, thedonald is a conviction politician after all, as in if you work for him you'll end up with a conviction

Satellite images from last week show that North Korea is making numerous improvements to the infrastructure at a nuclear research facility, according to a new study.

The images, obtained by North Korea analysis outlet 38 North, come just weeks after President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed an agreement that called for a denuclearized Korean Peninsula.

The satellite photos indicate that North Korea is quickly progressing on several adjustments to the Yongbyon Nuclear Scientific Research Center.

The improvements include a new cooling water pump house, multiple new buildings, completed construction on a cooling water reservoir and an apparently active radiochemical laboratory. It is unclear whether the reactor is still in operation, the report said.

US reportedly has 'unequivocal evidence' that North Korea is 'trying to deceive' Trump with secret sites and nuclear-fuel production

A classified intelligence assessment revealed that in recent months, North Korea had upped its production of fuel for nuclear weapons at several secret sites.

US officials said they believe North Korean leader Kim Jong Un may be trying to conceal the secret facilities.

"There is absolutely unequivocal evidence that they are trying to deceive the US," one US official said, according to NBC News.

Yeah I read that the other day...but, he is due to nominate a replacement for Kennedy on the bench and I don't want anything to mess that up so I would rather all looks good and well on planet Trump to the rest of us for now.

This was what I read:

https://news.sky.com/story/north-kor...eases-11421572

For the most part I don't care if Trump looks the fool but for now, I want him to focus on getting the right judge so that we don't end up with another Souter / Sandra Day / Kennedy situation and have a judge who is okay with abortion.

So for now, Kim can go play Trump for all I care and I won't say anything to draw attention to it, for now. After that justice has been confirmed it'll make Trump look all the more stupid, so I guess I would bring it up then.

I suppose if it you accept CNN as a Viable source.

Quote:

The US has made repeated proposals to North Korea on denuclearization, all of which have been rejected, according to senior diplomatic sources.
The United States has made, and continues to make, "specific proposals for starting and proceeding to the end point of fully verified denuclearization," including a timeline, these sources say.
North Korea has rejected all of these proposals, considering them "gangster-like," one of the sources said.

I hope that the recently returned remains can be identified and give peace to their families, but this programme had originally started in 1996, when North Korea and the US conducted joint operations to recover the remains of US soldiers, but ended in 2005 when their relations soured as Pyongyang accelerated its nuclear programme.

Quote:

North Korea has “significantly expanded” a long-range missile base and started construction on a new facility even after President Kim Jong Un met with President Donald Trump in Singapore over the summer, experts said Wednesday, citing new satellite images. The images, released to CNN by researchers at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, reportedly show that the Yeongjeo-dong missile base and another previously unreported site “remain active and have been continuously upgraded.” In the past year, North Korea has “significantly expanded a nearby facility that appears to be another missile base,” the report from Middlebury Institute stated. Construction on the new facility appears to have occurred during the Singapore Summit between Kim and Trump, according to the report, which estimates that the “underground facility” started development in 2017 and was still under construction as of August 2018.

US President Donald Trump says he has ordered the withdrawal of recently imposed sanctions against North Korea.

In a tweet on Friday, Mr Trump referred to "additional large-scale sanctions" by the US Treasury that had been added to already existing restrictions.

It was not immediately clear which measures he was referring to.

However on Thursday, the US Treasury blacklisted two China-based shipping companies for reportedly violating sanctions against North Korea.
Quote:

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders did not elaborate on which sanctions were being referred to by the president.

However, she added: "President Trump likes Chairman Kim [Jong-un] and he doesn't think these sanctions will be necessary."
Now I'm really confused.

Administration officials are confused about the meaning of President Trump’s sanctions tweet, per @kylieatwood. The Treasury Department penalized two Chinese companies yesterday for helping NK evade sanctions, but those were neither new sanctions, nor were they announced today.

North Korea has shown off what is thought to be a new intercontinental ballistic missile during an early morning military parade, according to analysts.

The event took place before dawn in the secretive country, and was later broadcast there as well as in South Korea.

Edited footage from the parade, which was used to mark the 75th anniversary of the country's ruling party, shows a 22-wheeled transporter carrying the apparently new weaponry - thought to be larger than anything previously displayed by the country.

Also on display was the Hwasong-15, the longest-range missile the country has ever tested, and what is thought to be a new submarine-launched ballistic missile.
