Really don't get the obsession with UHD. We should be asking for an increased quality of content rather than PQ. Go outside and look at the Spring if you want Ultra Ultra HD :).

I tend to agree with this comment. I've got a Samsung 65" 4k tv and when watching say the grand tour 4k the picture seems almost fake because of the crispness. Sounds crazy I know but that's just me.

Not really sure how you can consider an even sharper picture with more depth of colour as 'just a bit to(o) much'.

Isn't the search for lifelike TV pictures the point of HD/UHD being introduced?

Not sure anyone besides Germany and Switzerland will be broadcasting it in UHD.

Comment from a Beeb blog from last month says it’s not going to be easy.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/internet/...8-7f20575ae2b5
Quote:

However, making the move from on-demand UHD programmes to live UHD footage presents significant engineering challenges for our teams. High quality real-time HEVC encoding of UHD is still in its infancy, and is much more demanding for live programmes than for on-demand. That means we need to use higher distribution bitrates, and that people’s TVs will need to work harder to show the best picture.

We’re always looking to provide our audiences with the best possible viewing experience, and live UHD could be the next step in that journey. We’re now looking at the results from this latest experiment to help us build our understanding for how we might be able to provide live events in UHD in the future.
He also provided an update in the comments
Quote:

There are trials like Blue Planet II where we want to make them available to as many people as possible to watch. But as we’re still building and testing a chain capable of producing and delivering live programmes in UHD on BBC iPlayer, some tests will be more for the benefit of our engineering teams. We’ll make you aware of larger-scale trials in advance, where we can. For those interested, we have now made a live-encoded short loop of highlights from a fifth round FA Cup match between Southampton and West Bromwich Albion available to view in UHD HDR on BBC iPlayer Beta on compatible connected TVs.’
And I’ve just had a chat with an friend who works at the Beeb (in the technology space), and he said they are planning (but subject to change) to stream the 4K to Sky and iPlayer.

As with all new technology, it takes a while to iron out the teething problems. Maybe that's why it's taking the beeb so long to launch their UHD fayre. I don't think it would go down too well if they launched an inferior product.

David Bouchier, chief digital entertainment officer at Virgin Media, said: “The UEFA Champions League final is the biggest night of the year in international club football and we know our customers will relish the opportunity to get as close as possible to the action by watching in Ultra HD. Showing this game in Ultra HD is another example of our fantastic sports offering and look out for more exciting announcements to come in the near future.”

Does this work, or is the box only upscaling?

I removed my (quite old) Panasonic surround sound system from the loop, and the game came up on the Sony TV as 4K, when it was in the loop the V6 would only output at 1080p maximum, removing it gave me both 2160 options.

Yes.

Your tv would have upscaled to 4K watching footy, so you didn’t see true 4K then.

Have a check of ad displays, you can see each LED.

Eurosport 4K Wimbledon?

Eurosport 4K Wimbledon?

Wouldn't the tv recognise the format anyway without having to select just the uhd video settings on the v6?

If the tv knows it's a uhd feed, I assume the v6 would output in that same format too?

Next time I'll select just the uhd settings to see if the picture appears any better. It was a very good picture last night if the tv was upscaling. Definitely crisper and clearer than HD

Eurosport is the French open in 4k.

That's strange. You would have thought it would auto select the best possible format.

I'll just select the 4k setting on the v6 to see if there is any difference.

It’s the V6 not selecting 4K output, unless you select 4K only.

Eurosport have been showing Wimbledon alongside the BBC recently and Wimbledon is being filmed in 4K this year.

So if you select 4K only, will the V6 still show SD and HD material?

Yes, all material will be upscaled to 4K.

There was nothing wrong with the quality of the UHD picture, Arthur. The problem is your second rate TV.

More likely the problem is his screen size, viewing distance, eyes, or some combination of these. I have a 47" UHD TV about 3 metres from my desk, and I can't see the difference on that either. But I have seen plenty of stunning UHD on larger or closer TVs.

I also didn't change any settings on the tv or v6 , I just pressed the red button.

Yes V6 box has to be in 4K output only, as i don’t think it can auto switch to 4K from Red Button.

The behaviour might vary depending on whether you have the new V6 software that's currently on pilot. I know OLD BOY has it, and I suspect Ultimate.Conj does too (being in Berkshire)

Mine did seem to switch to uhd automatically as I could see the difference when switching back to the hd channel.

The picture on my tv was really clear, in my opinion it was a success.

I accessed the uhd feed via the red button on ch 528

Did we get a Dolby Atmos test to go with it?

I hope new software soughts out Dolby drop outs bug.

Using Freeview Dolby 5.1 until.

I'm thinking the BT 4K feed had no 4K signal 'flag' embedded within it so our TVs still say '1080p' or whatever they said before we pressed the red button. The football last night was definitely better than HD, the sharpness, clarity, and movement were all improved. Colours seemed improved as well. My TV is a 55" Sony XD93 I think 55" is the minimum you need to get at least reasonable benefits from 4K. The French Open was also improved but not as much as the footy to my eyes, the players looked more 'lifelike' though. Overall though I think Wimbledon will look even better in 4K, if we get to see any.

I can see the BBC showing Wimbledon in UHD HLG, as they have been trialing UHD for years now and not had the chance yet to show it to the masses. All them blades of grass.

Clashes with the World Cup though.

Trooping The Colour might be in UHD too.

The planet earth trial in UHD HLG looked amazing. The clearest picture I'd seen with so much detail and vibrant colours.

I also heard good reviews about the other trials the BBC did for the rugby and football matches.

Hopefully they will be able to show some of the world cup in UHD too.

Not forgetting, of course, VM didn't get access to the planet earth series trial in UHD HLG

It couldn’t have been under load if it was broadcast and not streamed over the internet, like with BT Vision.

I was under the impression the Red button stuff needed an internet connection?

If not then I'm not sure why it wouldn't work during the match, but works perfectly now.

Also hoping for some world cup 4Kness, be nice to see some more UHD broadcasts in the future

That's true. The 4k world up might have to be accessed via the tv app instead

I thought I saw somewhere in this forum that the World Cup will not be in UHD in UK - however, I hope you are right.

If not it would seem to be a huge opportunity missed

The BBC would be silly if they didn't. Even if they classed it as another trial.

But you're right, it's not guaranteed.

If they aren't confident their servers can cope with the demand, they'd be silly if they did.

There’s not many sets that can access BBC HLG anyway.

Was Cup Final broadcast or streamed?

I suspect it is broadcast, as might be the tennis.

Sky broadcast theirs.

BT Vision is streamed, as they have no capacity on Freeview for 4K.

You don't need HDR to access HLG. If you have a UHD TV you should be able to get the full benefit of HLG.

I posted this a fortnight ago.

And I’ve just had a chat with an friend who works at the Beeb (in the technology space), and he said they are planning (but subject to change) to stream the 4K to Sky and iPlayer.
