Box Nation, Atlantic and PBS, these channels may be offered to various broadcasters and probably be accepted by them ie costs, but when it comes to VM, there is always this 'talks' business.

What VM have to think of is one the customer, and the other money - they want channels on the cheap.

IF other channels pay for those channels and then offer it to there customers in special deals, then why can't VM do the same.

Jameseh 24-10-2011 18:21

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.

Box Nation is PPV so I would exclude that. Sky Atlantic is known to have cost too much. PBS is not exactly a must have channel, in the US it just seems to be UKTV with more kids content.

Mr Fanatic, ATLANTIC might be EXCLUSIVE to Sky, BUT it was offered to a company called VIRGIN MEDIA, and they are still in talks over it.

And if you read my comment l did say Atlantic may be offered to 'various broadcasters' its like being offered to ITV or BBC, its the same thing.

Do you work for Virgin Media

Virgin Media have a duty to its customers to provide the best channels as possible, and in my opion they are not doing that.

The first update which enables the main updates I believe is been rolled out slowly area by area, you will soon know when the first major update is here as many new features* will be enabled ie express series links, info button works on the epg ect.

*Does not include BBC red button, Sky Sports red button

Virgin are giving us 99% of the best channels and the one which they cannot get at the present time is due to Sky's greediness.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.

Firstly let me answer the first point that has been brought up.
The Red Button, if you read my comments l have stated quite clearly that ONCE the red button has got working properly and there are no faults, l would go over to it on a full time basis before the season started, at the present the red button came on midway through the season, therefore l remain with Sky, and from what l have read on this forum, there has been problems with the red button.

Secondly, the 'greediness' of Sky, l have said this before also, Sky is a business, and have to make money from it, the same with VM, but to me VM is way down the pecking order in regards to channels, and they appear to be going more for BB than channels, you only have to read the comments on here where they are in 'talks with suppliers' from various members.

If you want a Rolls Royce, you don't go to a Skoda dealer do you.

So Sky are allowed to play hard-ball on pricing, but VM are not allowed to say no to the Sky prices if they think they are too high? (that's what you appear to be saying).

One rule for Sky, a different rule for VM, it would appear....

Sky is greedy because they refuse to sell wholesale to other providers, which is the norm. They seem to be insisting on the same price as the provider needs to charge its customers. That is not right, it is sheer monopolistic practice.

As far as the Rolls Royce/Skoda comparison, Sky may have more channels, but Virgin Media have more on demand. VM also have TIVO. Hardly Skoda stuff!

Virgin Media are in the process of turning their business around and it will not be long now before they have a superior offering in terms of content. Just wait until they get Lovefilm (rumoured to be before Christmas) and Netflix (possibly early on in the New Year). The plates are turning.....

Yes, devilincarnate, I am now a proud owner of a TIVO and with loads of recordings, including in HD on my new box, I'm still only 36% full! My glass is definitely more than half full now!

The guy I spoke to the other day who was just checking how I was getting on with it said that we would be able to subscribe to Lovefilm before Christmas on the TIVO. Now if that comes to pass, I will be in seventh heaven! Although I would rather like Sky Atlantic too, but he was not able to help me on that one!

Neil Berkett has said Tivo is doing very well and my guess is between 160,000 and 180,000

No l think you are over estimating it by quite a bit as l don't think the Virgin engineers could install that many in a 3 month period.

It could certainly be in that area. At the end of July Virgin had 50,000 estimated installs. Since then the price of TiVo has been slashed, and is now free to new customers.

I'd say 85,000 confirmed installs. What would be more interesting is how many people are still awaiting TiVO to be installed.

I'm looking forward to seeing the majority of the 21,200 customers lost in the last quarter, students cancelling their services for the summer according to Neil Berkett, returning. With all these students coming back, and all the new customers taking advantage of free TiVo this should be a bumper quarter for Virgin in terms of new customers taking TV services. Failing to replace the 21,200 lost customers from last quarter, or even further losses, would not be positive at all.

That would be great but I can't see if happening. Virgin would need to give away hundreds and thousands of mini hubs to current broadband customers to allow them to access some of the new speeds. Virgin wouldn't do this free of charge. I would expect them to at least charge either their standard £30.00 activation fee or installation fee of £49.95.

I'll tell you what though, if that is announced tomorrow I'll be chuffed to bits. I'll also eat my hat.

Very true. You've got me thinking now. It was 50,000 TiVo installs at the end of July and I guessed 85,000 TiVo installs by the end of this quarter. Based on these figures Virgin over the last 90 days would have been installing 389 TiVo boxes every single day, on average. Now I'm sure Virgin might have the capacity to deliver on these figures but 389 TiVo installs every single day from the last 90 days is pretty intense.

I'm now going for 75,000 to 80,000 TiVo installs.

At least my figures are more realistic than those in this article:

http://broadcastengineering.com/news...502/index.html

"Virgin Media has been able to ramp up TiVo box deployment to 1000 a day, which means it is heading for about 300,000 subscribers by the end of 2011."

The best way to watch TV

In the quarter we started to market and sell our new TiVo service to new customers and since July have been running
our first TiVo TV advertising campaign. The strong early demand for this service has exceeded our high expectations and
by the end of the quarter we had 162,900 TiVo customers, more than four times the number of customers with which we
entered the quarter.

We are seeing this demand for TiVo from both new and existing customers, with around one third of
all TiVo subscribers being new to Virgin Media. Growth has continued strongly in October, and we had 222,000 TiVo
customers as of 26(th) October.

Oh well I stuck my neck out and made a predication and got it wrong, just like everyone else too! I’m one of the new TiVo customers myself, or at least I will be next week when it gets installed.

What impresses me is the following statement:

“We are seeing this demand for TiVo from both new and existing customers, with around one third of all TiVo subscribers being new to Virgin Media.”

I’m sure it’s in the figures somewhere but overall how many new TV customers did Virgin attract in the last quarter?

The number of paying TV customers increased by 28,800; however churn in the lowest free “M” tier, with
34,500 net disconnections, meant the total TV customer base fell by 5,700 in the quarter.

These 34,500 customers most likely went to Freeview or Freesat.

New sign-ups to Spotify must be Facebook members.

So the big question is, how does this impact on the deal between Virgin and Spotify, if at all? If someone is interested in getting Spotify via Virgin, surely they won't be forced to open a Facebook account first?

It also looks like people with a Smart TV, with access to the Facebook app will be able to access their Spotify account / tunes via the Facebook website.

It would appear selling Spotify as an app to TiVo customers is going to be more challenging than Virgin thought?

No they won't. Virgin customers can still sign up using the old method if they don't want to use their Facebook details. Of course if they do want to use their Facebook details, that will also be possible

This is if they specifically sign up via Virgin Media though.
