Quite right! It's just a recording clash prevents me recording on a Sunday. The SD PQ issue with the TiVo worries me too. My full HD Samsung TV won't even let me display the PS3 in 1080p (it causes interference i.e "snow" on screen and "pops" in the sound) so even though I would always go for the HD option, a lot of stuff I watch is only available in SD. So knowing my luck I'll have to get a new TV! Does DF or Masque or anyone else know if updates will be available as mentioned earlier?

Why am I and many others not seeing your picture issues? Some have seen TiVo in action in the VM shops and have said it looked fine on SD?

If it was me, then i'd allow the tech to do some checks and then decide if you want to downgrade to V+HD again.. but it's obviously up to you.

As far as I can see DF none of the VM staff on this forum ever seem to come across any TiVo bugs whatsoever! Strange don't you think, considering the multitude of issues experienced by others?

I think "multitude" is a bit over the top! lol

Who said we hadn't come across any bugs? Anyone who has brought any up, I've discussed it with them.

Yes but, none of the staff have ever mentioned, on this forum, that they have ever experienced any issues with their own TiVo.:dozey:

As part of my NDA, I wouldn't be allowed to start posting bugs I'd found. I report them and they get fixed or I'm told a SLA for fixing them.

The TiVo customers are getting is certainly more polished than I had at launch, but even then it wasn't show stopping.

New kit will always have some issues. :dozey:

But with only 20 hours of HD recording on the V+ box, replacing it with a Tivo with much more space is the only option to resolve lack of space issues.

Well the 1TB HD is the get out clause for the alleged SD PQ issues. I can pretty much get everything I want now in HD. And I say alleged because it's quite subjective.

I found even with SA V+ that the SD images had a fair bit of compression noise/artefacts, but on the whole were quite sharp. I wonder if the Tivo is just trying to clean it up but ends up with softness as a result.

I'm not sure I'd blame VM/Cisco/Tivo though as really the underlying issue is the low bit rates. You can't polish a turd.

What do you mean?

Sorry, didn't make myself clear. I'm not as technically minded as some of the posters on here, but I was wondering if updates to the TiVo software would resolve any of the SD PQ issues some people are concerned about, or is it a hardware issue (i.e. The type of TV you have)? I don't have TiVo myself, I'm just going by other peoples comments. I realise you've seen no problem yourself, but could this issue be a real one, or are people expecting too much? (no offence meant to anyone who sees it as a genuine problem!)

Hardly a multitude, just a few wee niggles.

However most staff that are either trialists or were part of the first 500 had to agree to an NDA before getting TiVo installed, and are still bound by this so although they may find issues and can report them internally they cannot openly talk about them. They may also not be on the same software, but have a newer update so can't talk about that either.

Tivo being installed next Tuesday!!!!

I made a phone call earlier today to Virgin asking when I would get it and they said they would contact pre-registered customers by end of March to arrange installation. I then told them I had pre-registered in Dec and was a series 1 Tivo owner but that made no difference and I would have to wait my call..... then later that evening a phone call!! Maybe just a coincidence? Mmmmm?

One other point to raise with the VM guys on here.

I notice that my Tivo failed to record True Blood on FX HD @22.00 4th March and Top Gear on BBC HD @20.00 Sunday 6th March.

This was because I set the series link to "Premier only". It would appear the Tivo was unaware of that these were UK Premiers ? Is it using US episode data or VM UK specific data ?

(I've changed my series links back to "premier and repeats" for now)

I didn't think the Top Gear was a Premiere - it was a part 1 of a compilation of the best bits of series 16.

A general question on this: if you set it for premier only and it can't record because all the tuners are tied up with other recordings, does it automatically look for a repeat or +1 channel and record that?

With three recordable tuners, that shouldn't be required too often, but it would be good to know if it does; I read somewhere that Freeveiw+ does this.

It looks for the next available showing to record. I've tested this before by setting a bunch of recordings and clashes.

My TV doesn't support 576i over HDMI so I wouldn't be able to watch SD if it always passed through.

VM are still Working out the kinks in the epg data. For now I would keep it on new and repeats just in case. It won't record repeats if you still have the original one on your TiVo.

I don't think Top Gear was a new one this week any way.

Ok so I need to decide re TIVO. I could afford it at the moment which is lucky I guess, but I do like my current HD box very much and find it easy to use.

I am attracted by the extra capacity and the apps or whatever they are called on TIVO and definitely by the radio recording facility which my current box has not got.

I gather there are only two tuners?

So could some clever people advise me whether I will find TIVO easy to operate? Terms like setting it to 10080i for HD picture or something are putting me off rather as could easily get it wrong?

Thanks folks....

If you like radio, there is BBC iPlayer App on TiVo with radio "listen again" which has virtually every radio programme in the last 7 days.

TiVo will auto-detect your tv's settings, so don't worry about that. It's not complicated to operate, but you find a lot of features by just exploring the menus. :)

TiVo has 3 tuners (3rd activated in a couple of weeks) You will be able to record 3 progammes at the same time.

What will happen with shows like Law and Order SVU on Universal, where they're not just showing the latest series, but earlier ones as well?

If you set a series link for just the laest series and set it for 'new and repeats', does it ignore previous series?

I did some experimenting last night and only enabled 576p output so the TV, menus, everything was forced out at 576 as confirmed by my TV which displays the current mode. The SD menus and SD TV looked no different than when forced to upscale to 720p or 1080i. Even the HD menus looked decent (the TV has to use it's internal scaler to fill the 1920x1080 screen res). I then forced 720p out only, still no difference in SD image quality whereas the V+ would have upscaled and sharpened the image. Finally I forced 1080i only and was definitely the worst for SD broadcasts. So to me it appears TiVo is making no effort to resize and sharpen the image when set to 720p or 1080i.

576i was blurry as hell. There again if there's motion on screen 1080i gives a less sharp and less smooth image than 1080p.

Ok, so the current V+ box has 3 tuners, so i can record 2 things at once, while watching something other than the 2 things i am recording.

But your saying on the tivo post update, i ll be able to record 3 things while wtaching something other than the 3 things i am recording, or will i have to be watching 1 of the 3 things i am recording?

Ps how is this known if the update hasnt arrived?

I then forced 720p out only, still no difference in SD image quality whereas the V+ would have upscaled and sharpened the image. Finally I forced 1080i only and was definitely the worst for SD broadcasts. So to me it appears TiVo is making no effort to resize and sharpen the image when set to 720p or 1080i.

576i was blurry as hell. There again if there's motion on screen 1080i gives a less sharp and less smooth image than 1080p.

A.

It's actually pretty important to get this clarified by VM. As if you have a decent TV or AV Amp which upscales you will be better off setting SD to output to 576 as setting it to 720p or 1080i will prevent the TV/Amp scaling.

With reguard to this, can you output HD stuff at 1080i while outputting SD at 576 or if you want HD are you forced to output everything at HD resolutions even if the box isn't scaling?

Thanks in advamce guys.

It has three tuners only so if all three are recording, you can't watch a fourth channel,

It's been posted on this forum about all three tuners being recordable.

If there's 3 tuners then I would imagine you'll be able to record 3 channels, but you would either have to watch one of the shows being recorded or watch a previously recorded show. If there is no 4th tuner then you can't watch a fourth channel.

When I have all resolutions enabled the TiVo selects 720p for SD content. If you enable only 576p and 1080i then it chooses to output SD at 1080i. You can't seem to get it to choose 576p output unless you disable both HD resolutions.

Don't worry about it mate, the TiVo is really easy to use. The majority of people wont worry or need to fiddle with the settings I'm messing with as the box will auto detect your TVs best input.

It's definitely worth getting, and should you not like it (which I very much doubt) then cancel during the cooling off period. Even though i'm not best pleased with the SD picture quality I'd never go back to V+ :)

Re: TiVo

Had TiVo installed today and I have to admit I am impressed. I haven't used it much but it is all very slick and easy to use. 2 things I feel I need to chime in with.

1) The SD picture is worse than the Samsung V+ was on my Pioneer Plasm, but it is in no way as bad as some people are making it out to be.

2) when working fine the box is superfast but I have had a few instances where it has been super slow. I am, however, yet to experiance the slowness of the V+ when accessing OD content so overall an improvement on the speed of my other box

Oh and I also have to say that I am loving Wishlists. I am a huge Arsenal fan and I placed Arsenal as a key word with sport as a category and it found and set to record a load of stuff that I would never have found if I was still using V+ ;)

---------- Post added at 15:49 ---------- Previous post was at 15:47 ----------

A question, when setting a series link what is the best option to choose. I'm not interested in seeing repeats etc just new material I haven't watched before. Is it safe to do this though or will ever risk missing an episode

Have a look in the TV Guide and if the programmes you want it to record are marked "NEW" then just recording "premiere" will record those episodes only.

Will the Tivo output 576i if required? ( the SA V+ will) this would be best if you want your TV to upscale and deinterlace for SD content.

Yeah fair enough on the Top Gear. But the EPG data needs to work for UK/VM premiers for US shows, as otherwise you'll need to remove the "premier only" option from the series link options.

Well it goofed up on True Blood on FX HD last Friday, so clearly the quality of the data is not 100%. And I might add next Friday's showing does not come up with the "new" marker either. Compared to Being Human which does correctly flag both SD and HD showing next Sunday.

A service such as this really is going to live or die based on the quality of the EPG info, otherwise you might as well take out all the fancy dancy series link options and just let us schedule everything manually. But that being the case I'd want my 3 quid a month back !

Just had mine installed this morning and have been playing with it since ( had to stop or i would go blind:D ). I have to say that it is AMAZING and I love the sleekness of the interface.
The engineers were here for about a hour in total to get it up and running and I had to explain a few things to them:erm: ( They said that they would call back in the morning after I had a play with the box? ). There a few good thing that i have to say about the box and the UI:

1 - The UI is a lot faster than the SA box.

2 - It is a lot nicer to have different layout style of Catch up and On demand.

3 - I have to say that in regards to picture quality the box still looks the same in SD as the V-HD BOX.

It is a brilliant piece of kit and have to say is whoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooopie

Welcome to the forum Bluemoon, actually what you have just said about your package makes sense to me and there is nothing unusual here. You are a XL TV customer and triple play (BB + Phone + TV) as well which is just like me.

Like me, you’ve registered and gone into the database of pre-registered customers. I am certain this database contains no intelligence on the age of the customer with VM, and therefore anybody who has just joined VM has the same chance as somebody who has been with them for years.

I wouldn’t be surprised that somebody could join up with VM now, then register and have equal chance to be called as somebody who registered on the 1st December (like I did and still waiting a call or this email now we’ve heard of to allow ordering online).

You will find plenty of information on this forum Bluemoon, a few hot heads on the BB as there will always be but you can find some useful information here.
