It did it when I first updated to or 9 and then 10 but randomly goes away after a few months

Or, you get used to it, so don't notice it ;)

It's annoying. No It definitely isn't me getting used to it.

Tell you what tho. Windows 8 has made my laptop run much faster.

And now I've figured out that you roll the middle thing on the mouse to scroll sideways it's removed that particular frustration

Use Chrome or Firefox, IE can't render text properly (at least in my experience).

Chrome all the way here seeing Firefox is so slow now. I find IE renders text in Facebook terribly but not sure about other sites.

Try the latest build of Chrome, and in the Google search box click the microphone and then talk to it, it works really good and i think you may find it useful. :)

i don't like chrome. but text is sharp as anything on there.

So its defo an internet explorer issue.

Installed "start8" app, absolutely brilliant. It means I have the start menu back, AND it starts up in desktop mode, so no faffing around. BUT I get the greater speed.

It now switches on and within a minute you can use the internet. It used to take about 2/3 mins on Windows 7 to start up.

How to Correctly Install Windows 8.1 Preview

Separate ISOs will also be offered for those who wish to set up a dual-boot configuration and install Windows 8.1 Preview on a different partition. Here’s what Microsoft says about it.

“There are two ways to install Windows 8.1 Preview: through the Windows Store of through the ISO,” the company wrote.

“If you’re running Windows 8 in one of the 13 languages that the preview is available in, we strongly recommend that you download the preview from the Windows Store. When you install from the Store, you can’t create installation media, but most download the preview directly from the Windows Store,” it added.

Windows 8.1 to let you shut down directly via Start button

Windows 8.1 will try to make your life a bit easier by letting you shut down or restart your PC from the Start screen.

The preview edition of Windows 8.1 isn't due out until Wednesday. But the Windows Server 2012 R2 preview is available now for download. Since both versions share many features in common, the server-based preview provides a good glimpse at what's ahead for PC and tablet users.

Windows 8.1 users will be able to trigger a shut down or reboot much more quickly than in Windows 8. On the PC's Start screen, simply right-click on the new Start button to display the familiar pop-up menu. You'll now find a shut down command at the bottom of the menu, which lets you turn off or restart your device.

Windows 8 offers a few different ways to shut down or restart, none of them ideal, so this new option is clearly Microsoft's attempt to make the feature more accessible.

Users will spot a few other changes in the Windows 8.1 Start screen.

The tile for "Computer" has been renamed "This PC." An arrow at the bottom of the Start screen takes you directly to the Apps screen. You can select multiple tiles and then run a single command on all of them in one shot. And some tiles give you a choice of sizes, including Small, Medium, Wide, and Large.
