Unless you want all companies to cut their profit margins and lose money which is how a company should not be run as they would go to the wall pretty quickly IMO.

Virgin media are ran very very very very differently than BT or Sky good sir. You must see the difference? VM are a cash cow currently. They provide nothing new to the industry. They are just here to collect money. BT and SKY are stupidly spending millions on getting rights to football or daft shows therefore they increase prices

VM just increase prices and shrug their shoulders. There is literally no long term plan whatsoever for VM other than

"Giles!!! make money quick before we dump this stock!"

What difference is that Vince? as they are all in the same industry with many of the same bundled packages on offer.

Good point i believe VM did at one point have a deal in place where SKY used vms network for something, but now with Gfast rolling out would SKY really need vms network anymore?
Maybe the kicker in the long term with the deal between SKY and BT is that it opens the gates for SKY to use BTs gfast network, yes the lines are owned by openreach but BT are rolling out Gfast now.
Or maybe VM and SKY are in talks as we speak trying to get a deal sorted.

Tbf i find this a bit harsh, VM have been expanding their network so they are investing in their network, they are getting some exclusive content but only scraps what no-one else wants but it's a start.
I hope Den was sitting down reading this as me actually giving VM some credit might shock him lol.

You mustn't forget that this arrangement will not come into effect until 2019. There could be moves afoot already to provide Sky Atlantic to VM. After all, the plan is now to monetise assets - that's coming from Sky.

To be fair this makes it sound more promising Sky Atlantic could arrive on Virgin at some stage.

The new PL rights start from 2019 so it could be actually August 2019 rather than January?

I don't want to seem pessimistic but Sky and BT have only probably reached this agreement due to the football rights. Virgin have nothing to exchange bar the broadband access which they want to keep. I can only see this as a major downside for Virgin with packages going up as I am sure that the wholesale cost of BT Sport to Sky has been negotiated downwards in exchange for NOWTV access etc while Virgins will stay the same or rise.

However i think VM are in the weakest position of the big 3 as they have no content to offer in return.
I've said it before and i know many disagree but i'll say it again VM should never of sold of their channels for a start Living was great when vm owned it but now it's a shadow of it's former self, plus by having channels VM would of had that extra bargaining chip too.

I think this is both Sky and BT hedging their bets over the forthcoming Premier League rights, if either lose out they get to market the football as available on their service (BT being the loser as all the subscription money goes to Sky via Now TV).
If BT decide to sell their rather good online sports service direct to customers rather than renew their contract with VM or demand you be a BT customer to even be able to pay for it then VM could well be fubared when it comes to full sports content.

Once Sky Atlantic is launched on BT, I think BT will be more relaxed about making that channel more freely available on other platforms. It has a pitifully small audience share at present.

Now Sky have withdrawn the Original and Sky Variety TV packs and replaced it with the entertainment pack it makes them cheaper than Virgin Media if your not interested in BT Sport

I've done a mock sign up with Sky and VM

Sky

Sky Q £25
Sky Entertainment
Sky HD

Sky Talk Pay As You Talk £0
Sky Line Rental £18.99
Sky Fibre Unlimited £11.01

Free Fibre Activation Fee

Without offers £20
Sky Q Multiscreen Pack £12
One off cost including Sky Q 2TB £114.95

Total monthly cost £67 Without offers £75.99

__________________________________________________

Virgin Media

VIVID 200 Optical Fibre
Full House TV
Talk Weekends
Virgin Phone line
Virgin TV V6 box
Virgin TV multiroom room
Activation Fee £20.00

Monthly cost £67.50 a month for 12 months then £82.50 a month

__________________________________________________

A lot of changes from Sky over the past week and for those not interested in BT Sport which is free for now with VM (some rumours it won't be once the current deal is up next summer) you can save yourself £78.12 a year at normal price

ozsat 16-12-2017 14:12

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2017)

But that is not a like-for-like comparision for broadband.

Sky Fibre Unlimited is an average of 34mb download - much less than the 200mb option you have used for VM.

This weekend's scan indicated that the override flag has now been added to Dave HD.

Also that the Liverpool FC TV freeview has ended and that the new Playboy channel has been added to a further internal network used for testing (up from 4 test networks to 5).

Interesting that there are still existing customers out there with one of six different TV packages (Player, More, M+, Mix, Fun and Full House) although the only packages now being offered to new customers are Player, Mix and Full House.
There are codes for another two pack levels in the system. One seems to contain only encrypted PSB channels but is largely redundant as these channels also carry the override flag.

The other code sits between Fun and Full House but has pretty much disappeared from use, I think it only exists on the remnants of placeholders of former channels.

I think that there's a good chance that if BT Sport is to be removed from XL that VM will use Sky Atlantic to try and negate any cancellations/downgrades.

The 2019 thing might also tie in with when the VM contract with BT runs out.

Not everyone that uses BT sport would be interested in Atlantic so I don't think it would stop that many people cancelling.

I hope your wrong! I think it would make most decide between Sky Sports and BT Sport depending on the content. So lost revenue for both.

Seriously though, ITV and Disney have had a very long working relationship with each other. I guess most people are too young here to remember that "The Wonderful World of Disney" used to be a prominent part of ITV's schedule and Disney has been a direct shareholder in ITV companies from the past.

The Wonderful World of Disney used to be on BBC 1 on a Monday evening.

I would be surprised if BT pulled out of the existing wholesale deal with VM. I haven't seen the figures, but gut instinct tells me that BT would get less from VM viewers if they had to subscribe and pay for that service. Currently, they have a guaranteed income stream from VM which must be worth something to BT through the payments made by VM and the extra advertising revenue.

If I was negotiating on behalf of Virgin, I would get UHD and AMC thrown in with the next negotiation!

The 1st 3-year contract ran out last summer which initially saw them paying around £75million a year now they are paying around £120million a year I don't know how long the current contract is if it is 3 year again that would see it expiring summer 19

Well well! Does 2017 have one more duck to throw at the fan. No doubt VM will launch Now TV on the TiVo. I can't see the actual channel launching directly.

I'm still surprised at the lack of app's for tivo. I would have thought it would have been easy to port the american apps over. Must be a ton of bizarre apps.

Anyway the ongoing 5 year discussion over Sky Atlantic. Will there be a twist or are we all quackers?

I never get the hate towards SD. In fact sometimes i forget to even switch to the HD version of a channel. I'm certainly not bothered about ultra HD. I really can't be bothered seeing the pores on peoples faces or the beads of sweat. That doesn't really intrigue me that much.

Maybe i'm stuck in the past...i remember the days before digital and my concern being trying to pick up channels with my indoor aerial and watching a ton of grey fuzzy cloud half the time. I'd have died for SD then... so i'm always grateful to not have to deal with that poxy indoor aerial anymore

Yes it is of no great concern to me either if it arrives in SD then so be it but hold onto your horses Vince because it won't be long before Le God comes along and tells us we are old fossils stuck in a bygone age.;):D

I can see it coming in 2018, too.
Growth to all the main TV platforms has stopped so the only way Sky can get more money is by selling its channels to other platforms and via Now TV.

BT to buy ITV... hmm. I've thought ITV may get sold sooner or later but it seems odd why BT would want it? They'd just be lumbered with a network of channels they already have total access to. Thought the yanks would buy ITV.

Aye Den! I've had my HD TV for ten years and it will continue in my bedroom until the day she dies... Only then would i even contemplate getting an ultra HD tv! Plus we all know the ultra HD charge will likely be an extra ten quid knowing sky!

It would open up all the HD channels from 2, 3 & 4 plus give them the option to place European football back on Freeview if they so wished

BT may well have considered ITV at one stage but very recently BT seems to be stepping away from content investment. Yes, it will keep BT Sport, but general entertainment channels seem set to be outsourced to Sky via Now TV from 2019.
If BT wants Freeview or HD channels it can licence them, it does not need to own them.

With Virgin using the tagline the only place to watch all football or whatever it was, I wouldn't be surprised if Sky pay a fair bit of wedge to BT to be the only place to watch all of the football rather than VM, they have the cash. VM will be left with BT as a bolt on rather than 'free' as is now and Sky will subsidise BT Sport if people include it in their package. It's another Sky Atlantic type scenario.

Apparently just a short vacation rather than a goodbye. It now appears to be back on the EPG.

In more technical terms, streams associated with the original Playboy service, SID 1709 have been removed and the service has been parked on SID 1759. The new Playboy service SID 1710, previously testing on 5 internal networks, has now been added across the national network and has replaced the original service on the EPG.

I don't know how you could possibly call shows such as 'Game of Thrones' and 'Boardwalk Empire' over-rated.

If you enjoy dramas, you would be bowled over if you took a look at the long list of dramas that have been shown on that channel. When I first subscribed to Now TV, I couldn't believe how much I'd missed.

I agree that, like other non premium Sky channels, there is a fair amount of rubbish screened outside peak times, but Sky Atlantic does have a pretty good pedigree for showing some good stuff at other times (Mad Men, The Affair, The Night Of, True Detective, etc).

3rd series of 'The Tunnel' just started on Sky Atlantic.

Another good watch, although I would agree that I find anything worth watching on SA

Its funny how you always single Sky out for this , I'm hard pressed to find anything worth watching across the entire EPG during non peak hours it usually results in me viewing Sport or On Demand oh and I'm including the terrestrial channels in that.

The new Playboy service SID 1710, previously testing on 5 internal networks, has now been added across the national network and has replaced the original service on the EPG.

Potential joke about Playboy TV and the Coming Soon thread ..... ;)

New 2tb V6 in the works according to a source.
I thought the v6 was already 2tb though tbh but apparantly it's only 1tb, a new 2tb model is in the works apparantly.

They should have done that in the first place.

[QUOTE=OLD BOY;35929472]I don't know how you could possibly call shows such as 'Game of Thrones' and 'Boardwalk Empire' over-rated.

If you enjoy dramas, you would be bowled over if you took a look at the long list of dramas that have been shown on that channel. When I first subscribed to Now TV, I couldn't believe how much I'd missed.

They are completely overrated by Sky's standards anyway. They are good programmes but come on, they attract an audience I admit, but Sky has kept the channel withdrawn like its something absolutely fantastic. I think Virgin was right to hold off paying, for what was probably a ridiculous sum asked for by Sky.

Virgin have never been in the business of giving the viewer what they really want, they have always been slow on releasing tech, and channel releases are done randomnly and generally months after they've been on Sky.[COLOR="S

RTE News Now to close:

https://www.independent.ie/business/...-36393796.html

I'm assuming that this is on VM Ireland and/or VM in NI.

As usual they're blaming a lack of money, but RTE is appallingly mismanaged from my dealings with them.

I hope they will have a method of copying recordings from a 1Tb box to a new 2 Tb box.

Also does this mean that the cloud storage idea has been blown out of the water for the forseeable future (bearing in mind the 2Tb box was originally dropped and people posted cloud was the reason)?

It reminds me of a local news broadcast in the UK. Ireland is possibly too small to have a rolling news channel largely focussed on home news. I can understand why the viewer numbers are low.

Both very good points.

I was told that VM were working on customers being able to transfer recordings across, but SP doesn't think that this will happen:

Maybe i'm stuck in the past...i remember the days before digital and my concern being trying to pick up channels with my indoor aerial and watching a ton of grey fuzzy cloud half the time. I'd have died for SD then... so i'm always grateful to not have to deal with that poxy indoor aerial anymore

I'm the complete opposite :D
I always watch the HD variant if there is one, which most channels now have. The picture quality is much better, specially when it comes fast moving pictures such as sport or action movies.
I won't go as far as saying SD hurts my eyes...but it does lol

I watched some Blue Planet II in UHD on the iplayer...it's looks amazing. We should be embracing the new technology...specially with HDR now, everything looks so much more vibrant

VM probably won't push out the HDR update until some UHD content comes along, which hopefully isn't too far into the future

I hate that show den! Its a weird hybrid of dungeons and dragons coupled with some racy scenes to get the punters in.

I can't wait until its over! Its also laughable that the author still can't finish his books as he's too busy being cosy with hollywood.

Belfast Telegraph is reporting that Liberty Global will rebrand be3, TV3 and 3e under the Virgin brand but the date is to be confirm.

But Belfast Telegraph is saying "most likely next year".

NOTE: be3, TV3 and 3e only broadcast in Ireland on Virgin Media Ireland, Sky and other Irish networks.

Any update on STV AD?

We think unless it launches tomorrow we think Virgin will wait until 2018 for this one.

Any other news?

Also when Playboy did appear on Tuesday we found that the number of Total Channel did go up by one.

As far as I know from Astra 28 scan changelogs, on Sky it appears that the narrative audio stream has been added to some, or all, of the individual STV regions but that the actual audio hasn't yet been added. So possibly a case of just waiting for STV to activate the audio. I'm not sure why VM are creating an AD version rather than adding a narrative stream to individual STV sub regions. That said, I don't know why VM have AD versions for Channel 5 and S4C. The Channel 5 and S4C AD streams point to exactly the same video/audio streams as the national Channel 5 and S4C services, so it would seem simpler to just enable AD on the main service.

Any other news?
I've not seen any new scan data since Tuesday. The Astra 28 changelog shows that ARY channels are returning to Sky. They were removed from all UK platforms when their licence was revoked by Ofcom. Maybe the return to Sky will be followed by a return to VM?

Quote:

Unfortunately a result of a placeholder being created for the old Playboy service. If only it was a simple as closing SID 1709 and replacing it with SID 1710. The 1759 placeholder is the "additional" service. There are quite a few placeholders in the NIT and they are all included in the "Total Channels" count.

As far as I know, the barriers preventing RTE Radio from being added to DAB don't apply to VM. It's a licensing technicality.

The big two adult tv broadcasters, Playboy and Portland, market their own channels on Sky direct to the end customer, offering their own bundles of channels. VM offers various individual subscription channels and a bundle of channels taken from both broadcasters. It's possible that Playboy has simply "rested" Playboy TV on Sky, they still offer a bundle of 4 channels. Maybe VM don't want to carry Playboy's substitute channels and have reached an agreement for Playboy to continue to supply the original channel.

Do you mean your series links have gone missing or the just aren't recording anything?

Try Seach or a WishList to see if the programmes have moved channel
