Not been released however I've seen it on DS forums and noticed on the Sky website that they'll increase in June.

Both Sky and VM are getting way too expensive in my opinion.

Got to agree. I only have SKY due to a good retention deal last month when my contract expired. We where fully prepared to jack it in last month and go with a combination of Freeview, Netflix, Amazon Instant Video and NOW TV as an alternative. We're lucky to have all 3 apps built into our Smart TV.

You can get all 3 services for less than £17 per month if you shop around. £5.99 for Netflix, £5.99 for Amazon and NOW TV for as little as £5.00 per month if you buy their 5 month pass from Argos for £25.00.

What I like is the idea of being able to effectively eliminate your monthly TV bill entirely, if you can afford a 1 off splurge. A one off £79.00 payment gives you Amazon Instant video for a full 12 months plus a years worth of NOW TV passes can be picked up for £60.00. That's £139.00 up front for 12 months of great TV, subscription free!

I know I'm beginning to sound like Money Super Market but it's worth people considering, especially if conventional TV is becoming too expensive.

I will be doing exactly the same if I get no joy later in the year with retentions , I can't be bothered with changing VM's 18 month contracts are a put off whilst you may get a heavy discount they make it all back in the latter parts of the contract.

As you say streaming and Freeview looks the way to go.

Correct if I am wrong Chad, but don't you still have to pay for a number of shows on Amazon, even if you are a prime member? Surely that is going to hike your monthly costs up.

I would, primarily, like to watch Spiral from the beginning and Braquo from season 2, but if I understand how Amazon works correctly, I would have to pay a small fortune just to catch up with those shows alone.

I really hope you prove me wrong as I am very fortunate to have a very decent deal with VM, and an Amazon video account would be most welcome alongside netflix and my current deal.

The Amazon service provides 2 viewing methods rolled into 1 service. For your £5.99 per month you get access to a large selection of movies and TV content such as Vikings, Turn, Black Sails, The Borgia, Extant etc... It's a solid collection of TV and film, which I personally prefer to Netflix.

They also offer over the top content such as Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Banshee and the latest movies but it'll cost you £1.89 per episode or £4.49 per movie. Personally I don't go anywhere near this part of the service and deliberately set a random pin number, which I can't remember, stopping me from ever using the service.

If Netflix and Blinkbox had a baby, it would be Amazon Instant video :D

30 free day trial might be worth trying:

Netflix UK have one season each of the above. They are also available via other Netflix regions, which may have more seasons

Total farce , I certainly will not be paying a penny more if retentions can't offer me anything its bye bye pay TV for good , there all as bad.

l think a lot of people once their contracts end will be bartering for a better deal from their providers MM and if they don't get them then both of them will lose quite a few customers in my opinion.

Is that the same plan as me? Pretty much what Chad described above and supplemented with some nefarious streams from 'elsewhere'.

Freeview ain't that bad TBH, Horror Channel starts today, although there's still too much shopping and pr0n on there.

Cheers PB. Annoyingly, Netflix only have series 4 of Spirial (there are 5) and the first for Braquo. I have not checked any of the other Netflix regions yet. I probably should, it might help me finally make a decision on joining them. :).

The trouble is Chad, all the TV stuff I want to watch is pretty much chargable. There is a great deal of choice on there, but the for me, the free film choices are not the greatest and the ones I would choose to watch are the chargable ones.

Pure profiteering on their part, as I pointed out to them in the e-mail I sent them.

Yup, I think all TV companies will continue to fleece the people who let apathy stop them getting a better deal. My TV deal is up in May, and I will be getting a better deal from VM or I will pester my new landlord for a Sky dish and get a decent deal from them!

In fairness to OB, it will be interesting to see what Sky, VM, et al all do to counter act the rise of the streaming services. I imagine they will fight for a lot more boxsets and bundle them "free" with the packages. I am happy to be thought an idiot, but I would have thought Sky could quite easily get first refusal/exclusivity from Fox for their boxsets if things ever got that bad. Also, if they have helped fund other channels in the past, surely they will be put immense pressure on those companies for boxsets.

Sky, VM et al will not be going away for many a long year in my eyes.

When you compare the likes of Netflix to the likes of Sky, I find much more choice on Netflix and it is far, far cheaper. I'm currently watching Damages, Lilyhammer, Orange is the New Black and House of Cards on Netflix, with a good range of films and TV series lined up to watch when I can fit them in. All for £5.99 per month. Bargain in my opinion.

Unless it comes to VM in the next couple of months, I will get a Fire TV box and subscribe to Amazon also, which must at least double the choice, and maybe more.

The pay per view stuff on Amazon is not part of the subscription simply because they cost more for the rights, presumably. However, it is an expensive way to watch and it would be better if they had a second tier subscription level that would make these 'free' to watch.

As far as VM are concerned, I think they would be doing their viewers a service by giving them as much choice away from Sky as it is possible to do, because Sky is not good value in my opinion. I think they have similar ideas, which is why I do expect more streaming services to be arriving on the TIVO in the near future.

I am ditching Sky Sports when the price rise is announced.

Whilst I agree Sky and VM are becoming too expensive I still think Sky offer some good content across its channels however the problem is this can now all be accessed for £6.99 a month making the family bundle at £30 plus look massively overpriced.

If you count the programmes of interest amongst the Sky channels with those that appeal to you on terrestrial or Netflix, I think you will be startled by the results.

However, when it comes to sports, as Sky have the lion's share of that, I agree there is little competition.
