Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

A thumbs question - is it possible to rate suggested recordings without playing them back, as there are some things I know I don't want to watch? I know you can rate items in the guide, but it doesn't seem to work on the recordings list.

Also, I can't seem to register more than 1 thumb rating in a playback of a recording, so for example if I want to give something 3 thumbs, I'd have to play, rate, stop and repeat x2 (or go into the suggestions menu and do it there). Am I missing the knack of this, or is it a bug?

You can rate in 'My Shows' as long you go into the programme details (press right when the programme is selected)

I don't see why not. You can even "thumb" things from any search facility; ie without even recording them :)

Don't know for sure as I am not having that problem  I would think that that bug would affect all users.

It's an intermittent bug.

I've got my TiVo box set at all the video formats 1080i, 720p etc is that best or just set it at 1080i?

I don't know if that is the issue. I'm just offering it as a possible explanation :)

DigiGuide seems to be right though.

Surely it has to be quicker than that now ?

Press the info button and go to the record icons at the bottom and it will tell you what is on the tuners.

There's a post about that on the Virgin Media High Definition & TiVo Services blog by Nialli. Gives some info that, to be honest, I don't fully understand but on the strength of that I've set my Video Output for 1080i and 720p only. SD picture has improved slightly IMO.

TIVO challenge

Somebody with TIVO try setting a series link for Sports Nation on ESPN America , let it run for a week or two and see if it records every show in full , it should give an idea as to whether the epg is updated regular.

The guide is meant to go forward two weeks and back one isn't it? Well I have the two weeks forward but it goes back to the day it was installed, three and a bit weeks ago. I guess a reboot would fix it but I've half a mind to leave it for the time being.

BTW there are programmes from three weeks ago that it will play in catch up straight from the guide.

Anyone else seen this?

At the moment it doesn't tidy up old days from the EPG. It just keeps collecting them. I can go back months. :)

That's because the title was different so Tivo sees it as a different programme. Of course it shouldn't be, but I'm only explaining why it didn't record. Try a Wishlist for the same show as that should record all variations.

Curiously, the V+ used to record both under the same series link. Can they not be 'linked' at the other end?

If the criteria for series link programme titles was as broad as you suggest you would end up with all sorts of garbage that had a similar title!:)

Bob 07-05-2011 19:48

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Well I presumed series links were part of the guide data? Well at least that's how it used to work on V+. Therefore, if it is the same for TiVo, surely the data can be edited to acknowledge they are one in the same? Or is each individual box doing the hard work?

But the two programmes in question are not exactly the same Bob!

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

I'm just curious as to why they are flagged differently on the V+ to the TiVo. And whether it is intentional or a mistake. If it's the former, I'll have to set up a wishlist.

I doubt I'll be the only person who will be querying why it didn't record. But at least I have this forum to find out :)

Stephen 07-05-2011 20:38

The epg data for TiVo and V+ aree supplied by different companies I think. So they are programmed seperatly.

Bob 07-05-2011 20:53

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Yeah they are definitely from different companies.

More than anything I was wondering if I was making a reasonable demand of TiVo :)

V+ was good on that. I used to find that if BBC4 ran a series of programmes on, say, Bruce Springsteen, they would series link all the relevant programmes, even though they were different titles.

I suspect that tivo won't do that?

carlwaring 07-05-2011 21:05

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

My Wishlist for 'Title: "Doctor Who"' (non-auto-record) also catches "Doctor Who Confidential" despite their being two different, but associated, programmes.

This would also work for "You've Been Framed"; with the added advantage (?) of it picking up showings on any channel :)

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Bedlam on History Channel at 8pm tonight.

On Tivo the episode details list it as the SkyLiving version with Will Young listed as cast. I did think how odd for History to show this but set a series link as my son likes it and Bedlam has been taken off OnDemand.
But guess what... I go to my V+ to record it on there too and Bedlam is listed as:

Leading psychiatric historians reveal the incredible history of Bethlem Royal Hospital in London, which became notorious in the 1600s for its cruelty and inhumane treatment of patients.

Why are the two different and why do I pay an extra £3 a month for this disappointing service. Getting really sick of Tivo now, just feel like I wasted my money.
Is it to late to send it back?

l think once you have had it for seven days and signed a 12 month contract you might have to wait till the 12 months end unless you pay them to end your contract early, its best for someone with more knowledge then me to answer this question.

this brings up a question I keep meaning to ask. If you set it to not auto record do you get a message to tell you there's an upcoming episode, or do you just have to keep going into your wishlists to check them?

You insert a ? correctly lol ;)

It would be a bit of a pain as it would pick up the repeat showings on ITV2 and ITV2+1. I know space isn't an issue but it means deleting it.

I'll do it and tell you what times/durations it records, but don't expect me to watch them! You'll have to do the correlation with reality.

At the moment it is planning to record the following:
Tue 10/05 08:00
Wed 11/05 08:00
Thu 12/05 08:00
Fri 13/05 08:00

Looking at your services I would just hold fire for maybe 2 days (dependent on how long you have got for the 28 days). Just switch the box and try using the V+ or the V box that you have got and see how you feel after this.

Just a thought?

As I read your posts Carl, I know you love Tivo, and I kinda like it too, but as you say, padding, reminders, I used interactive everyday to check news and weather, just came home from work and pressed red button, saved time loading pc up etc, and we used Music OD alot too, but with no search option like on other Virgin boxes its a massive pain just to play a video. Typing in is a major pain too, not just for me but the rest of my family too. My wife is not impressed at all.
Also my recordings often get duplicated and with the constant epg errors, and Im now finding the Tivo slowing down as I said before, Tivo, as it is right now Tivo is not for me and the feeling of wasted money has a bitter taste.

Thanks, that's what I figured, so I've set my few wishlists to autorecord. Had to modify a couple by adding an actor (ie Dexter) when they turned up some other things, but better to record something I don't want than miss something I do.

Having said that my TiVo has been sitting at around 50% full (I was shocked - and am a compulsive deleter LOL) since a week after install. Recording everything in HD and then being away for a week and a half really filled it! Yup - I watch a lot of junk LOL

For those who are finding it slow after getting to 40+% I've not found that at all. The only time I find it slow or delayed is when I'm changing series link priorities as I have a LOT of things set up, so it seems to take absolutely forever when I change one or two.

If you are not happy, and you seem to have made your mind up on that, then call VM on Monday and go back to V+. No point in being unhappy. :)

I've just had a look at the letters I was sent with my contract. I thought that you only had a week after install to cancel. Separate to that statutory right though it says that if you have added a new service it is covered by a 28 day money back guarantee. I would assume that means you should have no difficulty cancelling.

I think the problem arises if people upgrade thinking Tivo will be Just an enhanced version of V+ when it is actually a completely different system/ technology. As such it will not (at least initially) have all the functions that V+ had. (a bit like upgrading from a bicycle to a car and being concerned that it doesn't have a bell!)

I tend to think that a lot of these functions were pretty old technology anyway for example I have several wireless devices which I use to access news, music etc. And I would never use reminders when I can record anything and watch it when I choose.

So, for me, the many advantages of Tivo make it miles ahead of v+ - even in its infancy. However I do appreciate that some people do still use these features and, for them, may be more important than the much more advanced PVR features. If that is the case I would agree it probably is not a good idea to be an early adopter of the new system.

As I said for some reason I never got a new contract, Im quite a "techy" person and can see how all you guys swear by Tivo, it is a great new product, but as of at the moment, its alittle overwhelming. I've turned off suggesttions and deleted as I watched and its helped with the speed issuses. But its just not doing what I want it to do for me and my family, it seems alittle over complicated sometimes. I just wonder how Mr. Average will see Tivo when Virgin switch over to it.
As Tivo is now, and I know its gonna get much better, its not worth the money paid and the extra fee a month. It should be flawless for the prices charged.

zantarous 08-05-2011 02:01

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

The V+ cost a similar sum and had £10 per month fee when it first came out and that was anything but perfect. As with all new tech you have to get used to doing things differently. If it not for you fair enough but the current V+ has a limited lifespan left.

its like anything new in that its takes people a while to get used to things and like any new product it will have a few teething problems as well.

The problem is you can pick up a v+ after install and the customer within 10 mins has it sussed. The TiVo is too complicated for technophobes. TiVo is right up my street because I like discovering features and playing around with gadgets, but I can't see my gran working it.

It may be a bit more complicated if you use all of it's features, that is inevitable. As far as I can see though if you just want to use it as a pvr it isn't. My wife is a complete technophobe and we are both getting on a bit but she had no trouble using it in less than 10 mins.
You can even use the old V+ remote to operate it.

I suppose your right, maybe im confusing customers with all the features. I think if vm bring back one touch record 'just press the rec button for once only" this would make a big improvement.

I seem to recall that, on the V+ it was yellow to record a season then L or R to select between "this ep", "all" and "choose". How was that less complicated?

Now it's one for 'record this' and one for either one-off or whole season. Isn't that easier?

Take some time out to reflect, go outside and smell the grass after the rain, then rush back in and check if your services are back to normal!:banghead:

Well if there is no return path you cant install a tivo. If its installed then the return path goes it turns into a v+ box, no discovery bar and no apps etc

We had broadband down for about an hour earlier in the week.

TiVo lost its discovery bar and earches, and displayed a network error - but tv was just fine.

Nice review - agree the episode guide is monumental. I'd stopped watching a couple of series (mainly due to V+ blips) so by browsing the episode guides I was able to establish which episodes I had missed and set up Wish List entries for them.

Yes and no... if you have lost upstream then you will have no broadband and no interactive/EPG updates/Apps etc.

If you lost downstream then you'd have no broadband/TV at all. This is the same on all digiboxes though.

Install wise, then yes it would be a problem, but it may be an outage or a another fault in the DP.

Our tv and bb was down in the week and we lost it for two days. In that time all recordings that were set it attempted to record and the lights came on but it just deleted them and they didnt go into recently deleted and nothing in hiccups either. It didn't even attempt to find alternative showing when it came back on.

:) its a big step up from a normal virgin box. It's all fairly easy to understand and the onscreen help is nice but it isnt always obvious what button does what and where

biggest issue seems to be EPG being wrong on a lot of channels, went to watch everybody loves raymond and it was king of queens but the box was telling me it was raymond :) an EPG makes or breaks a box for me..

cant go wrong with Morrissey !

No info - but Virgin need to test things out to see if they will work on TiVo before launching them so viewers will not see them before launch dates.

I do not know they launch date at time of posting.
