Seconded, I wasn't sure If I liked it at first but I think that was down to the very misleading marketing the film had. Made it look a lot like kickass or an equally daft superhero/zero parody.
However, I found it really made me think afterwards. Was very funny in a very dark way And I don't think Ive ever been shocked in a way how Boltie shocked me on more than one occasion.
Also didn't have the Hollywood cheese of a happy ending tacked on the end which I found to be a breath of fresh air, especially as I really think the standard happily ever after wouldn't have suited the rest of the movie.

For everyone but the main character or Boltie for that matter. And though he accepted his role he didn't really seem overjoyed by it.

A few, since the last time I posted..

Not sure if I posted about Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but I'd give it 8/10.

The Inbetweeners, 8/10 (it loses a bit because a couple of the jokes go on long enough they start to get boring).

Insidious, 5/10. Quite entertaining, but the story tends to signpost any scares a while in advance, so not actually that scary.

Monsters 6/10, preferred District 9 and Cloverfield

front of box etc partially to blame for miss selling it, saying "Action packed" etc, which it isn't.

Not boring, but found it a bit dull for the most part, the characters weren't that interesting.

Had I gone any further I'd have ended up going on a shooting rampage. What a waste of John Cusak's talents. It tries so hard to be a Hangover-style comedy but fails miserably. The premise of the Russian version of Redbull being able to change time was just pointless.

Agreed, it was like they couldn't decide whether it was a horror or sci-fi.

Apparently 2 sequels have been planned, one of them will be based on the Army's response.

That scene before the attacks when they're in that guy's pool on the roof, some military helicopters went overhead, that's meant to be the suggestion that the army knew something was going to happen and Skyline 2 will explore that.

It's a shame the film was so bad because it had potential and could have been a whole lot more.

Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon.

7/10, I enjoyed it almost as much as the others but what put me off was the actress brought in to replace Megan Fox. She was supposed to be British so in true American style she had that irritating 'posh English' accent that nobody here actually has. She's supposed to be a model but she had lips like Mick Jagger (Mr_love_monkey - shut it) and annoyed the hell out of me in every scene.

Apart from that, pretty good and I recommend it.

It was pretty good, not amazing but worth a watch if you fancy something a bit different.

Mostly pretty serious as it's done as a documentary, but it has some funny moments in it, but it is a bit slow and drags in places.

It's not a prequel or milking the franchise. It's a reboot that still leaves the originals intact.

Johnny English Reborn 6/10 funny but not that good.

Re: Rate the last movie you saw

Yeah. It doesn't milk the franchise. If anything, it's saved the franchise. Trek was going nowhere. The last TV series is best forgotten, and the previous film was truly dreadful. The new film is IMO the best Trek film since First Contact, and it breathed much needed new life into the franchise.

The last movie I saw? Johnny English Reborn.

Good points: Gillian Anderson. She looks good, and I think would make a good M should Judy Dench want to leave the role. There are some good set pieces in the film, and a few neatly observed jokes (such as the sponsorship of MI7).

Bad points: Too many jokes fall flat or are not funny. Also, where as the original was written by the current authors of the James Bond movies, and was a quite neatly observed mickey take of the cliches of the Bond movies, this smacks of someone who isn't that witty trying to copy what the first movie did.

What like most scenes that feels like the film is stuck on pause for like 5 minutes or more, only to wait (and wait) for something to happen, and all that happens is the person says... "yes" then have to wait another 5 minutes for the reply kind of Pace?

The Thing (2011 remake/prequel) - 7/10. Now I wasn't expecting much from this film as "John Carpenter's The Thing" is my all time favourite film, but I was pleasantly surprised and it ties in nicely with JC's film. The special effects let it down a little and you don't really get the feel for the icy, stormy conditions as you did in the original. All in all fairly enjoyable.

I thought it was OK, but not a patch on Carpenter's.

Definitely agree the FX let it down. Carpenter's is 30 years old, but IMO doesn't look dated, because the practical FX were so good.

The new one though... too much CGI rather than practical FX. Which would be bad enough anyway as CGI is just wrong for this sort of thing... but it's not even good CGI!

I would have liked it more if I had never seen Carpenter's, but as I have seen his, this one felt like a poor remake as well as a prequel. It did tie in nicely, but I think it went over too much of the same ground, but not as well. Ultimately, I think it's a rather pointless film. I just doesn't do it as well as Carpenter's, and it's not different enough to stand out on its own.

---------- Post added at 01:42 ---------- Previous post was at 01:30 ----------

Not films, but West End musicals...

My wife loves musicals, and especially loves "Priscilla" (which she's seen around a dozen times, and plans on seeing every week for the last couple of months of its run (ends this year) :erm: ).

I don't like musicals. Unless they're funny, like "Avenue Q" etc.

This week, my wife took me along with her for this week's "Priscilla" trip, and then I took her to see "Blood Brothers" on her birthday.

Priscilla

It's been a while since I've seen the film, but I could still remember the basic story. This was very good. Fun, and funny. The guy who plays "Alf" in "Home and Away" played "Bob the mechanic", and got massive cheers every time he went on stage.

I quite liked the "Three Divas" myself (three women who sing the songs when the drag queens are miming).

8/10

Blood Brothers

I didn't think I'd seen this before, but memories came back to me as it was going along, so I think I must have seen it on a school trip or something many years ago.

Unlike "Priscilla", this was a musical drama, rather than a musical comedy-drama.

I don't like musical drama. Songs plus drama just seems... wrong... to me. You have what seems like a serious play, and then all of a sudden everyone breaks into song. Don't like it.

It *was* good... although the start was slow. Wet Wet Wet's Marti Pellow was very good as the narrator, and whoever it was playing the two brothers were good. But... the songs affected my enjoyment of it, and I got quite tired of Scouse Mum going on about "... like Marilyn Monroe" and Pellow going on about "the Devil's got your number!".

6/10 because I don't like musical drama. Strip the songs out, and I'd rate it higher.

The Dilemma - 3/10

The 3 is based on that I watched it in HD so I could appreciate my TV, otherwise a 1. Not that I expected any other result.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes 9/10

I was dreading watching this movie as the one made about ten years ago that really was quite bad but l Have to say I loved it! Best film I have watched in years!

Yeah, I thought that Rise was excellent. Far, far better than the awful Apes film Tim Burton directed.

My *only* issue with it was the post-credits scene: I think it should have been a proper part of the film, as the actual final scene. But then I always tend to think that of post-credits scenes, as I think they're stupid.

You've also got to remember that JC's version was a remake ;) The original was "The Thing from Another World" made in 1951
