Or it could be like the old film and everybody stand up and say that i am media boy

Is it Christmas already? I don't think I've seen many toy or game adverts yet. They usually start as soon as the kids go back to school if not before. :(

Game adverts are on all year round, because, you know, it isn't just kids who buy them.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'finally got his hands on Mercury' as the consumer division of Cable & Wireless was sold on by NTL to NPower and is still in operation. The VM telephony service may run on legacy Cable & Wireless exchanges and infrastructure backbone but I don't think that is really the Mercury side of the business that we knew..

The business part of Mercury was sold onto Npower, but the residential telephone part of Mercury is part of Virgin Media, that never went to Npower. Although as you point out, backbone telephone services (ie 999) are provided by Cable & Wireless.

I'm pretty sure that our Mercury 2300 service eventually became an NPower service with the little magic routing box (which I have in front of me as I type) but maybe not. Perhaps when the Mercury service ended we signed up with NPower for a while on our BT line.

I remember it was not a happy time with NPower but I can't remember why (my other half might but she's away). I think it was problems with billing and repeatedly getting the Direct Debit details wrong so that the payments never went through.

I know we had to have the magic box replaced once or twice too and I believe that this was a common occurrence. Also, I heard stories of people receiving boxes programmed with the incorrect routing prefix code or account number. All a bit vague now.

Those were frontier days pioneering the deregulation of telecomms with all manner of gadgets, gizmos, prefix codes and calling cards. Back to the future!

Ah, when people say 'games', I assume they mean video games. They're usually called 'board games' these days. Can't remember the last time I played one, it was probably Risk or Monopoly, two of the best.

I doubt that the fanfare is about Living HD as that's pretty much a given now, just a matter of days.

Virgin Media have already announced their IPTV ambitions for next year so it's probably not that either.

So another 'Coming Soon to Virgin TV' ...

The decision to retain the CRR as it stands but to relax certain restrictions on time-shift and high definition variants of ITV channels means that ITV now feel comfortable to begin launching +1 and HD channels.

i don't have to take it up with anyone - if Virgin can't, won't, or don't offer the EXACT same service that Sky customers receive then they should not be charging the same price.

They have no choice but to charge them the same price as Sky retail the channels to them for the same price. Unless ofc you want VM to make a loss on offering the channels?

Virgin Media signs first three-screen deal
Deal with Disney includes TV, online and mobile TV rights

This is the first deal of its kind for Virgin Media, and means customers will soon be able to watch Disney content wherever they are; in their home or on the move.

The deal includes the addition of the recently launched Disney XD channel, TV on demand content including HD programming, as well as rights for a wide range of Disney shows to be made available online and via the mobile screen.

Hmm! Some oddities among those.

027. ITV2 +1 (Scotland only) Why 'Scotland only'?
072. CITV (Not in Wales.) Surely that should be 'not in Scotland' where ITV don't have a franchise.
087. Community Channel (Not in Digital only areas.) Why 'not in digital only areas'?

There are a few channels allocated to regional variations where no equivalent exists in other areas on that channel number. Maybe it's just a bandwidth / multiplex issue but I'd really only have expected distinct differences for ITV in Scotland and Channel 4 in Wales. I see room for some alignment there.
</OT>

Speaking of alignment. I don't suppose there's any more news on ex-C&W/ex-NTL/ex-TW alignment? (Yes, I've read post one.)

I love the new logo MB. It's really 'is it a bird, is it a plane, is it a rocket ship' looking.

ITV are to axe ITV2 +1 so ITV can broadcast ITV1 +1 on Freeview.
Freeview says CITV is to stay in Scotland after September 30th.
Freeview says Community Channel will be only be broadcast in areas that is not Digital only - See DigitalUK on when your area will go digital only.

I had hoped to get the news on here first as I had a Tweet on my mobile an hour and a half ago but I've been on the 'phone since. I have a different URL http://pressoffice.virginmedia.com/p...849&highlight= but the same content.

ITV are only going to axe ITV2 +1 on Freeview (in England and Wales) but ITV2 +1 will stay on Sky, Freesat from Sky & FreeSat.

Ofcom, Compettion COmssion, EU loads of places if they did that they are monopolise the market so they can make sure they ahve all cuotmer on there platform which will be stopped straight away if htey did it, but red button up until now was seen as just niche thing for odd game but sky are using it now for CL and other things isntead of makign mroe channels

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

The red button on sky sports has long since ceased to be a "niche" product, and i thought in the pay tv review ofcom were going to require sky to make it available? Also my argument would be virgin customers pay the same for sky sports as sky customers do, so for the same money we should get the same content simple really, and ofcom the eu or whoever else should require sky to supply that content to all. There really is no excuse other then sky running rings around the regulators.:(

Thanks for that ben very interesting,:)

Looks like ofcom do indeed recognise at least in preliminary findings that the red button content should be available, lets just hope ofcom do not fall asleep on the job.;)

And after the 3rd phase of the pay tv review ofcom are able to implement it immediately or within a few months, allowing sky to appeal afterwards, otherwise i suspect we are in for the long haul.

They can appeal but i think the appeal process will be 3 months so if all goes well and we dnt havea general election before march 2010 we should then have all teh sky stuff

Media Boy EXCLUSIVE: CBS/Chellomedia - No immediate change in the carriage of the Zone channels.

locutus1974 has given me new info about CBS/Chellomedia being on Virgin TV:

NOTE: The following is from an email he got from CBS/Chellomedia:

"There will be no immediate change in the carriage of the channels. However, under the new partnership we shall continue to look to expand carriage on virgin media to include all our channels."

Sounds about right. Some have said that the potential sale of VMtv (Flextech) demonstrates VM’s apathy towards TV as a whole, but I think that the Disney deal and recent Cisco announcement show a renewed interest in competing at a platform level. Indeed, a multi platform level—the Cisco equipment, as I understand it, will help VM deliver content to their subscribers across TV (DVB-C and IPTV), PC and mobile. This sort of “three screen” deal provides the content rights needed, and I expect that the Disney deal is only the beginning.

After all, it’s going to take a lot more than just children’s channels to build a successful three screen platform…

Just seen this on broadcast now !

Although details of the online element remain under wraps, a Virgin Media spokesman confirmed it would be Virgin Media-branded and the company would play host to more third-party content at a later date. There are also discussions taking place about adding content from Virgin Media’s content division Virgin Media TV, which houses channels such as Virgin 1, Bravo and Living.

Yep. Although it makes sense to host free content on the broadcaster’s web site, subscription channels need subscriber management—which pay platform providers are best placed to offer, integrated with their own pay TV services.

I do wonder what the future holds for platform branded VOD hubs—at the moment, BBC iPlayer is the only broadcaster branded hub on TV (that I’m aware of). All the broadcasters and content providers on VM’s VOD service have their own sections, of course—but they’re all very obviously Virgin Media branded. Channels tend to value their brands rather highly, and I’m surprised that, in the UK, only one broadcaster has strongly branded their presence on a VOD service.

For example, National Geographic have both VOD content and a branded interactive service on VM, but they’re completely separate from each other. I can’t imagine that NG would pass up the opportunity to strengthen their brand by integrating the two.

Socialist government - free TV for all.
Conservative government - pay TV for all those that can afford to pay the big corporations for it.
Liberal Democrat / Green Party coalition - no TV, it's bad for your health and environmentally unfriendly. Go for a walk and smell the forest.

OFCOM is a busted flush.

The Conservatives have already stated it will be disbanded if(in reality when) they gain power.

So forget OFCOM.

I say again if we are not receiving the same services we should not be paying the same.

End of story.

VM cannot charge any less than they do now, because of how much Sky charge them—as it is, VM’s profit margin for customers taking Sports/Movies is much lower than for those that don’t.

Honestly, “forget Ofcom”?! Who else can force Sky to play fair? Because they won’t, unless they’re forced to.

You’d be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn’t find the current situation unfair, but Sky simply won’t allow a level playing field. Somebody has to force them, and I’d very much like to know who you think will, if not Ofcom.
