Re: Rate the last movie you saw
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. 5/10
Generally OK. Bit slow, but it's quite exciting when it speeds up. Not as funny as the first and second. The good points are Penelope Cruz (as always) looks hot, as do all the actresses playing mermaids. Ian McShane, Geoffrey Rush and Johhny Depp are excellent as Captains Blackbeard, Barberossa and Sparrow respectively. |
Re: Rate the last movie you saw
Capote 5/10
Promised to be a good film but dragged on far too long for my liking. Also the actor who played Truman Capote was a bit OTT with his campness, and his portrayal of the perceived way a gay man speaks, and his mannerisms. |

Re: Rate the last movie you saw
Thought I'd posted this, but hey ho..
X-Men: First class 7.5/10. Excellent film, but let down slightly (only slightly) by the actor playing Magneto who isn't as good as he thinks he is. Bad Teacher: 6/10. Bit predictable, but funny and likable all the same. Cameron Diaz is particularly good (and she looks hot) at playing a bitch, which was a nice change to see as she is usually so nice in films. Lucy Punch (who played the tarty blonde in Hot Fuzz) is excellent as another teacher in the school, and, without giving away too much plot, does a good job of playing Cameron's nemesis. |

Re: Rate the last movie you saw
X-Men: First Class. Hmm. They fiddled with the continuity somewhat (Emma Frost shouldn't be in her 20s in 1962, unless they're effectively going back to the comics...in which case it fits. Hmm.), but the SF explanation, i.e. slower aging, was good enough. In Mystique's case, particularly; it's feasible that someone with such a malleable cellular structure would be resistant to aging to some degree.
Casting, certainly, was spot on, except possibly for Magneto (I agree with an earlier post). January Jones, especially, very much looked the part of the White Queen. Moira McTaggart, though, has been messed with to an unacceptable extent - she was originally a) a geneticist, b) a colleague of Xavier, c) briefly his lover, and d) a redhead! The Hellfire Club was unjustly glossed over; they caused the X-Men a whole heap o' trouble, not the least of which was the resurgence of Dark Phoenix thanks to Jason Wyngarde's shameless manipulation of Jean Grey. Well, he got what he deserved... Loved Wolverine's cameo, though! One thing that bothered me greatly in a review was the notion of Xavier using his telepathy for personal gain, i.e. gettin' some. This is completely anathema to one of the most moral (if imperfect, as shown later) characters ever created in a comic; my first thought was 'Charles Xavier would not do that.' And he didn't. His use of his powers was much more subtle and in keeping with the Charles Xavier who fought Dark Phoenix to a standstill and died (?) doing it. Green Lantern is next on my list. I deliberately haven't read the reviews. We shall see. |

Transformers Dark Of The Moon 3D - 8/10 - Really enjoyed it, Better than the previous two in many ways though can't really beat the first due to the pure nostalgia overdose for someone like myself who grew up watching Transformers.
The action is better than the previous two, the scale is immense, the 3D is pretty good too (Though not as good as Avatars). Some niggly faults and small plot holes here and there but they are so slight you can ignore those and enjoy the film. Enjoyed it so much I'm going again on Sunday and taking my niece. |

glossed over too much, the slow bits dragged, and too much was cut from from what should have been some excellent action scenes. Bits I had been looking forward to seeing from reading the book were a huge let down :( Bit of it shoul dhave been like LotR but just weren't, almost liek teasers fo what they could have done :( Maybe it should have been longer. Also, don't bother seeing it in 3d, as there's not much good 3d in it, and so generally you're just seeing a too dark picture:( Goblet of Fire is still best Harry Potter film by far IMHO. |

H.P Deathly Hallows P2.
6/10 Not the massively excellent film I expected from a 2-parter and thought it was just a money spinning rouse. They could have happily amalgamated both parts into one film and it would have been better seeing as both were filmed as one then split later. |
Re: Rate the last movie you saw
HP7 hallows part 2 (Again)
Not sure how to score it, it was ok, but thought part 1 was better. Part one was a bit grown up compared to the others, but part 2 felt like it went back to kiddyland again. Having fights with spells, and flicking wrists do not work well on screen, the end fight was all rather pathetic. And as for the 'shield', why couldn't they just kept casting another inside another etc. Anyway, I'm glad that it's all over and I don't have to sit through another, but the series did have its moments and yeah they are worth seeing, but only the once (for me). So I'll give this one a good 5/10, and 6 for the whole lot combined. |

Super - 8/10
If you like "Kick Ass", you should like "Super". Dark, violent, and a bit messed up, yet strangely uplifting at times (but mostly just dark, violent, and messed up). Dead Snow - 8/10 Excellent Norwegian horror, about a group of students who go for an Easter holiday at a small remote cabin, little knowing that the area is cursed with Nazi zombies from WWII... Gory, great death scenes, some good humour and nods to other films. |

Re: Rate the last movie you saw
It isn't actually a prequel to "Planet" or any of the other original films.
In the original film series, the rise of the apes was covered by the fourth film, "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes"... but "Rise" does it differently to how it happened in "Conquest": It is a complete reboot of the franchise, starting from the beginning rather than e.g. the middle by doing "Planet" again. For it to be a "prequel" it would have to actually fit in with the original films and actually be set before in the same continuity. It isn't. e.g. The Star Wars prequel trilogy films are prequels - they are set in the same continuity as the Original Trilogy, and directly precede those films. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was a prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark, as it is set before it in the same continuity. X-Men Wolverine and First Class were both prequels to the first X-Men movie. JJ Abrams' Star Trek was a reboot of the Trek franchise (yet also kind of a sequel & parallel timeline, thanks to time travel, to avoid disrespecting the fans by erasing everything in the "Prime" timeline) RDM's BSG was a reboot of the original BSG. Casino Royale (2006) was a reboot of the James Bond franchise. Anyway, staying on topic, I saw it tonight. Loved it. Rise of the Planet of the Apes 9/10 |
Re: Rate the last movie you saw
Mixed views on Inbetweeners. As much as I liked it... it did lack something but may be I'm being critical after watching the series nonetheless, a good laugh.

Cowboys & Aliens was a film that I was so looking forward to, when I first saw the trailer, but it was just so boring. As said, good premise, badly executed. 2/10.
I was sure that the aliens killed all the "army" in the first 30 seconds of the final battle, but more came, got killed and then more came... |

Re: Rate the last movie you saw
Rise of the Planet of the Apes - a lot better than I was expecting. There were a number of nods to the original - though I'd rather they hadn't put in the most obvious one, precisely because it was so obvious. A couple of criticisms, one of character and one of science:
Tom Felton's character, ignorant lout that he was, would surely not pass any sort of inspection, his relationship with the facility's owner notwithstanding. Apes are neither monkeys nor baboons, and such cruelty as he showed would be obvious to inspectors who knew their stuff. Apes, especially chimps, are so very like us, in that they suffer trauma as we do, and they react to cruelty as we do. It would show. Mind you, Caesar's payback was not a little satisfying. As for the science - sorry, but giving apes increased IQ and cognitive ability is simply not enough to give them the power of speech beyond the very simplest sounds. Possibly even untreated chimps could speak, if they had the correct anatomy, i.e. a different shape to their skulls and jaws. As it is, they are literally incapable of it no matter how intelligent they are, and I was rather hoping this would be addressed. It could be argued that the genetic changes wrought in Caesar's DNA might have brought him part of the way there, but our mouths and jaws have, it is believed, changed gradually over several tens of thousands of years, after we invented tools and reduced our dependence on our own teeth to eat, resulting in the aforementioned changes to our jaws. This couldn't be done in one generation, by a few tweaks in DNA, even if the apes are, as Sir Terry Pratchett put it, only a few chromosomes away from wearing a vest. But one thing they did get right was that Caesar retained the compassion he was taught as a baby by Will, from whom he'd never known anything but kindness. On numerous occasions during the battle, the apes had plenty of opportunities to kill people - they certainly had cause - but didn't take them. Well, except one or twice. "We, who are not human, can afford to be humane." - the original Caesar, in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. The sequel - for they've clearly set one up - should be interesting. |
