Just because you don't want it, why would you deny the channel to those with 3D sets who would like to have more 3D?

Virgin need to be able to demonstrate to the public that they are embracing new things or they will just assume Sky is the best.

I believe that the Sky 3D channel comes with the Sky package deal that is currently being negotiated, which also includes Sky Atlantic.

No deal has been signed with Sky yet - Base on information from early September.

Yes but the point is that Top Up TV uses Channel 5's capacity on Freeview, so when the Top Up TV service ends on October 30th, that capacity will return to Channel 5.

5 Later has now started on Freeview as a 15 minute slot between 2.15 and 2.30am. It is currently opting out from Channel 5 +1 for the last 15 minutes until Channel 5 +1 closes down to make way for Top Up TV Anytime 3.

When Top Up TV ends, the "TUTV Anytime 3" hours (2.30 to 5am) will be returned to Channel 5 +1. During those hours, however, Channel 5 +1 isn't allowed to carry a repeat of the Super Casino programme. Maybe 5 Later is only intended to be a late night opt-out from Channel 5 +1, during the hours when it is unable to show a repeat of Super Casino.

As it would technically be a time-share, it should be relatively easy to add this to other platforms, such as Virgin Media.

Or BT Sport Preview, GOLD and Home will close on Freeview when Top up TV closes so that 5Later can launch.

The owners of Channel 5 have a lot of 18+ Channels so one of them may launch on Freeview over night using Channel 5 +1 slot.

Sorry - just seen you was saying the same thing last night.

Why should they?
There are many XL customers who don't watch BT sport but they pay for it anyway. VM content doesn't revolve around one persons preferences.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 4.

The XL package contains masses of channels of varying sorts some of which I don't watch but others do. You are right UKBazza that there are too many peeps who say axe this as I don't like it.... BT Sport is, so far, not increasing costs to those with XL....

Have things changed? The last time I looked (some time ago admittedly) Sky 3D was only available to those who took both Sky Sports AND Sky Movies in HD. So if it did arrive, it would be unlikely to be included in XL anyway.

It's changed it's in their entertainment+ pack now i think. They just blank out the 3d movies and sports to those who don't have the relevant subscriptions.

Ahh I see. The thought crosses my mind though, that if you take movies & sport away, what's left would be better off being offered on demand. Personally I find 3D unpleasant to watch (I tried my TV with a 3D BD when I got it, and have never used the 3D since) but I'd support those who want it, to have it.

That's correct it basically mirrors your package , you need a minimum of Entertainment Extra+ which gets you the non movies and sport 3D content , the movies and sport require the relevant premium subs.

Sorry - just seen you was saying the same thing last night.

I would have expected 5 Later to take unused capacity from TUTV Anytime 1 if it was going to replace BT Sport Preview / Gold etc. The fact that it carved a 15 minute slot from Channel 5 +1 indicates that it could possibly be a replacement for the TUTV Anytime 3 slot rather than a full time channel. BT Care have been ignoring questions on their forums about when BT Sport Preview will close, so there is no actual confirmation that it will be closing any time soon. It could even mop up the extra space vacated by Top Up TV.

There is a problem with Northern & Shell adding adult channels to DTT. They aren't actually encrypted but the video / audio streams are not defined and are accessed via a PIN from a red button prompt. The problem is that computer TV software doesn't have a red button facility and could potentially be used to view these channels without a subscription.

Such as Liberty Global has bought Sky and we will no longer have to decide by the ground or by the clouds in the UK and prices will be halved as a result to ensure that customers receive the best value for money.

Also - all US broadcasters will have their own simulcast TV channels in the UK and we will be able to watch every new show - good or bad - and not have to pray that rights are bought!

Just a thought

Good list.

Only one channel name on the list has not appeared online as an rumour as maybe coming soon to Virgin Media - yet.

Now where did I put that key???

New Rumour:

-I have been told by two Virgin Media viewers in the last day that Virgin Media are set to increase their internet speeds.

All I know is 'By Christmas 2013'.

More4 HD was also on that list but was later reconfirmed as launching October 1st.

Does that mean over 120mb? And if so is it imminent or will it take 3 years to roll out like the current speed increase?

I think they will do this soon to compete with other companies as Fibre gets more widespread from the likes of BT , SKY , TALKTALK etc it would be good buisness for VM to remove traffic management.
I think it will happen sooner rather than later.

I doubt they will increase the upload speeds too much for the same reason they brought in traffic management, ie to stem illegal downloads.

Now that usenet is essentially dead due to the DCMA takedown notices, there is a lot of capacity on the network, not that it was ever short to begin with. Virgin don't want to ruin that by increasing upload speeds too much. if you want your favourite shows, ad free, and to use on any device you want, the piracy route is still the only way to go. But of course VM like other ISPs, don't made any money out of that.

The netflix tieup is indicative of which way VM are going, ie, start to be more flexible and allow customers the content they want on the device they want. But it will be a long time yet before they are as flexible as the piracy route.

Usenet is far from dead, its still thriving, for every takedown notice 2 new services appear. Its a cat and mouse game just like the football streams are.

Usenet is the same as it always was, definitely nowhere near dead.

Parlyboy 26-09-2013 21:10

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 4.

If you think Usenet is dead then you're not using it right. The takedowns have just seen the uploaders get more creative and in some ways this has helped the down loaders as you know who to trust and what are reliable well run NZBs sites.

Personally I can't think of a single item I've failed to find on Usenet and if anything the variety of material has exploded in the past 18 months.

Alright, cool. What I assumed MB meant by "test line" on the "channels not yet broadcasting on Virgin" was that they were testing for the launch of a new channel on the satellite feed of Cartoonito when that channel closed down.

TCM2 used to broadcast in that timeslot, but was replaced by TCM+1, leaving a gap in that feed, that I predict (and hope) will be used by a future Adult Swim channel. :D

Super HD for all! Netflix adds highest quality streams for every subscriber.

Netflix subscribers around the world can now tune into the company's highest quality Super HD streams, providing they have a device and internet connection willing to play nice.

The Super HD streams, which arrive at a higher bitrate than the existing Full HD 1080 streams, promise improved picture quality as the movie or TV show is subject to less compression.

The streaming giant has been testing the improved video quality with selected ISPs this year, but has now opened Super HD up to all members, regardless of their provider.

In a post on the company blog, Netflix explains: "Netflix uses 'adaptive streaming' to dynamically adjust the video quality based on the available bandwidth. This means that the ability to receive Super HD depends on broadband quality and performance."

Provisos

There are, as always in these situations, a couple of provisos. Subscribers must have enough bandwidth (upwards of 5Mbps or 7Mbps for best quality), while not all content is optimised.

Plus, not all HD devices support the tech. Currently, the most recent Apple TV set-top box, the PS3, Nintendo Wii U, some Roku devices and the Netflix Windows 8 app will allow it.

It was never a problem for Virgin Media users as VM have the Netflix CDN, so we always got Super HD on titles with it on.

Doubt that, mate. Cartoonito is like a similar age to CBeebies or Tiddlers TV. Wouldn't make sense for them to start showing like, Fireman Sam at midnight or something. Would make much more sense for them to make a channel in that slot aimed at people who are more likely to be up then.

Of course, this is turner UK we're talking about. None of what they do necessarily makes sense. :dunce:

Sorry, been away a fair bit with work.. will it not just be you subscribe to them as usual.. ie pay Netflix or LoveFilm but there will be an app on the TiVo to sign into and view content?

Or will VM be selling/bundling these services themselves?

It is most likely the former. The 'included in a bundle' rumour started because of the BBC news report on the Netflix/VM trial which suggested that Netflix might be included in a bundle. We won't know until launch.

Super HD is Netflix only. Lovefilm do have content in HD, but (compared to Netflix) I wouldn't describe the quality as 'super'. Just IMO.

Well, it is a trial, after all. Depending on how it works out, we may well get an offer based on the XL package.

I'm not saying we will, because I don't know for sure, but I think this would enhance the Virgin Media offer and provide some real competition for Sky.

It would certainly provide us with enhanced programme choice within the existing subscription packages and I think it will be very attractive indeed to new subscribers.

How much would the price have to increase though ? I'm all for choice but with the inclusion of BT Sport and Netflix how much would that put the XL pack at I do agree however it would be a plus point , pay tv is getting too expensive and the telecom side of things seem to increase year on year Sky are increasing line rental by a further 90p to £15.40 and its reported BT are increasing line rental to £15.99 and BB prices are also increasing on BT both from January 2014.

You can currently sample Tiddlers TV content via the 'On Demand' system under the 'channels' folder.

I think that this will be a marvellous addition to the VM platform to cater for children aged 0 to 5. Can anyone with access to children in the target audience please let me know if the child appears to enjoy the programming? (PM please, to keep this thread on topic).
