Re: New Speeds - June 1st

I take it that nobody has actually been upgraded yet?
This thread has given me a few chuckles at the impatience of some folks!
Like the change from 512 to 600, then up to 750 etc.... it will arrive when it arrives.
It's costing nothing, so just be a bit more patient, and it will happen when NTL are ready to make it happen.

by definition 'upto' means it can reach that figure at some point - so if you advertise it at that and no customers ever got 50meg and it was impossible to get it then you'd be falsely advertising.

its 'UPTO' 50MB

these forums are rapidly losing post quality, loads of threads seem to go off topic all the time.

its kinda hard to work out whats going on some times, and btw dont start saying about 50meg you will confuse people :D

On ntl's site, they are advertising 4mb (up to...) but if ntl can't provide 4mb to new customers. Aren't they going to land themselves in hot water legally? For existing customers it doesn't matter, as we're getting a "free" upgrade from the 2mb service. But if you're a new customer and sign a contract for a 4mb service today and ntl can't actually provide 4mb or "up to" it, then that's a diffrent matter, isn't it?

Ntl have covered themselves by saying up to 4mb, for instance even 1mb speed qualifies as up to 4mb.
Its not ideal though to be too far under a stated speed, unless there are very good reasons

I have to disagree with the "up to" statement. If you go by this idea then when they finally get people onto 4 meg the can advertise 6 meg on their website to get punters in... this is fundamentally wrong... if they cannot provide the service NOW then they should not advertise it. In terms of upgrades, yes, that's fine, but they are telling NEW punters 4meg is available now and it is not... I hope they get in trouble for this!

Basically, NTL have cottoned onto the DSL 'up to' idea, which with DSL is due to network limitations such as distance from exchange. On cable, however, it's due to overloading.

It'd be interesting to do a survey of 10Mb subscribers and see how many regularly get that kind of service, 'cause it's becoming an absolute joke.

Its called clever wording. They can't get in trouble as it clearly states you will recieve a speed upto 4mb. It all depends on when your online, what equipment your running etc.. Theres no way they can offer a rock solid 4mb to all customers.

If you wanna hark on about 'not fair', it would be more unfair of NTL to offer a 'rock solid' 4mb service. They simply cannot.

I'm sorry, but that's just wrong. If they advertised the 1 Mbs service as 'up to 4mbs' the OFT would take them to the cleaners, and anyone who signed up would have no problem getting the local County Court to order a full refund.

I'm wishing I'd never typed that midnight post now - was a single wink not enough?

;););)

Why don't you set up a vote to find out. It may be interesting.

Although this is off topic.
