Even you have to admit though Den this is were Old Boy has it right , each broadcaster has far to many channels for the content they make available.

This is were I agree and I've said it before in my opinion each broadcaster will dwindle these down in favour of making more available On Demand. What I disagree with is his prediction of the complete death of linear.

There will be a slight pruning of channels perhaps but as for the death of Linear TV well lets just say l disagree with him.

Well, this is the way of the future, as I have been saying for a while now. Expect other channels to go down the box set only route before much longer.

Good news that at last VM will be able to show the small number of exclusives to that channel soon.

In the medium term, we agree at last, but when you look at a couple of decades ahead, it will be a totally different landscape. Frankly, I don't see how the conventional broadcast channels can possibly survive over time when there is such a better alternative available.

I predicted that it would either close or go FTA and join VM when the contract with Sky expired and their funding ceased.

Never considered this third option! At least VM customers will now be able to access it's programming and this is good for channel parity between Sky and VM.

Having re-read the article, I may have been too quick off the mark to suggest the box sets are launching on Virgin - the wording suggests it will merely be offered to them. A subtle but significant difference, especially given the current situation with the main ITV channel.

This household has had ITV Encore pretty much since its inception via Now TV and I can honestly say it has never been used once.
Why would ITV make the channels content of repeats available unless its behind a paywall when they are charging for premium access to their hub?
My crystal ball says ITV Encore on demand content will not be free!

ITV are deciding nothing on broadcast fees until the new chief executive ex-EasyJet and the Guardian Media Group joins in January so fingers crossed it will come!

Why is that, Den? Please explain.

With broadcast channels, you have so many disadvantages.

1. You can only watch what is scheduled.
2. The programme you want to see can only be seen at the times the schedulers say you can.
3. On most of the channels, you are subject to countless commercial breaks, which extend the length of programmes by about 15 minutes per hour.
4. Programmes are easily missed because they are hidden amongst zillions of channels.
5. The only way to avoid some of these problems is to record, but you have to find the programmes first, and then you constantly worry about filling up your hard drive.

Whereas with streaming, all the programmes are available by selection, they are more easily identified from the user friendly UI, you don't need to record or be bothered by commercial breaks. What is more, you can watch your programmes when you like and binge watch on whole series at a time if you want to. Additionally, streaming services are far better value for money and have more choice available.

These are the first things that come to mind immediately.

So please tell me why you think streaming is not a better alternative. You have the right to your own point of view of course, I accept that, but I am genuinely curious why you should disagree with that statement.

No one liners - just give us your reasons so we can understand.

Yes, most of us agreed that ITV Encore would come to VM after the exclusivity period. I certainly did not think they would go to box sets only at this stage - I thought this would be likely about a decade down the line.

Maybe things are happening quicker than I have predicted. Hold on to your hat, Den! :hyper:

The sticking point may be over price. Most of the ITV Encore content is already available on demand via ITV Collections. Virgin won't want to pay much for three or four series that have been exclusive to that channel.

VM to offer a 3 month free trial of a streaming service early next year in line with a new service arriving on the v6.

If it is indeed Amazon, there appeared to be some sort of hitch the first time around. There were rumours that Liberty Global had prevented it from launching, but I have my doubts about that, because that flew in the face of what John Malone said before about content.

Possibly, the delay was related to the new Amazon channels (some of which are the same as available already on Virgin) or maybe there were technical issues. I hope that this time, the rumour is correct and that nothing will now get in the way of the launch.

It was reported at the time that VM were up for Amazon but the parent company LGI over-ruled them so this is more substantial than a rumour. Fries does mention Amazon as a big threat. https://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2017...st-challenger/

Now that Disney is removing its content from other channels and services, I can see its new on-demand service appearing on VM but that has a launch date of two years hence.

Disney already has it's own service has done for 2 years disneylife.
Although not the new upcoming service from Disney but one suspects Disneylife will morph into the upcoming service from Disney.

The ability to bookmark Netflix movies and series in My Shows is something I didn’t really appreciate at first but I use it all the time now. It’s great having almost everything in one place - the only thing I have missing are any interesting Sky Atlantic series on my Now TV box

At a guess, I reckon it's the Amazon channels that are the issue, although if I were Virgin, I wouldn't be too worried about them.

I think it's more likely to be a case of whether VM want Amazon on the V6.

Interesting...

Regarding Amazon this could go either way as the previous CEO was all for adding it. The new one may have other ideas. Optimistically, perhaps the earlier attempt to add it was aborted so as to let the new CEO decide what to do.

This will be a VM/Amazon decision, nothing to do with the Tivo CEO, surely.

I wonder if people would get exactly the same version as those that pay?

How many on here who want Amazon would prefer it for free with advertisements?

Maybe this is the reason for the delay and this is the version what we'll end up with as VM may view this business model as less of a threat to their own core business??

I think you should win it, OB, the updates that you have supplied regarding the decline of linear TV viewing have been well worth reading, and imo is definitely the way that people's viewing habits are going, I also tend to agree with you on the EPL rights, which both Sky and BT seem to have a stranglehold on at the moment, I think that will change in the near future also, with the likes of Amazon making a move.

I would have thought they should save their money.

£10 for the sort of background drivel they will be showing would be too much.

All it is is a football series about one club and nothing more then that as if you or OB think Amazon will be bidding for EFL rights in the next few years you will be sadly disappointed because there is diddly squat chance of that happening.

How exactly does that translate into 'but they won't come here'?

The media scene is changing, Den, you might as well get used to the idea.

The 'coming soons' will all be streaming services before long, and what is migrating from conventional TV channels to these OTT services.

Oh, and the traditional channels closing down, of course. :D

I think for once I have to disagree with theone2k10, I do not believe the Man City agreement is Amazon testing the football market,
I think its more likely an extension of their (imho) excellent All or Nothing series which has so far featured NFL teams in the first two seasons and I think they know they can't just have it about NFL before the show gets stale.

It may well be separate, but Amazon has expressed interest in bidding for the Premier League, so even if they are two separate things, my bets are still on Amazon going for it either this time or next.

Recent changes on the VM Network:

Following on from recent frequency changes on the Barnsley, Brighton and Bristol (Aztec) networks. November has, so far, brought frequency changes on the Southampton and Seven Kings networks.

STV AD (SID 10252) has now been added to the SDT. Note that, at the time of the most recent scan data available, this had not yet been added to the NIT. Unlike the other Audio Description channels, this one is on TSID 102, a regional transport stream, suggesting that it will only be made available on a regional basis. Until it appears in the NIT, it is impossible to say which regions.

It is currently listed as being on EPG channel 853, has the EPG "Entertainment" flag and is flagged as "hidden".

I really don't think they have?

Wasn't it Scudamore (who gets a cut of the pricing) putting it out there in the hope that the first bids of the blind auction were stupidly high, last time before the auction he made a big noise that BeIn Sports may put a bid in.

Exactly, it is the CEO of premier league spreading these rumours in the hope of putting the price up yet again.

Amazon themselves have said they have no interest in bidding for
Premier League matches in the next round of bidding (despite what OB keeps posting)

Hmmm, I wonder if this is somehow a pre-emptive move by VM in connection with the ITV retransmission fee dispute?

I had hoped that they would use an AD channel as the one region that they say they would pump around the VM network. I assumed that this would probably be London, but maybe this would, if necessary, be STV.

It was suggested by someone else that VM would be able to get away with using a FTA satellite signal from ITV by using the precedence set by the legal ruling regarding TVCatchup, I never considered that they may do a deal with the only independent ITV franchise left- STV.

It could be totally unrelated and have been in the pipeline for quite a while. Then again, it could be a method of protecting the continuity of the AD service for Scottish viewers if ITV does pull the plug. First of all, let's see how this develops, which specific regions get the new service and what happens to the existing ITV AD service in those regions.

That was three years ago. PL rights, a fall in advertising revenue and increased TV and broadband competition will erode profit margins.

Together TV is a new channel from the Community Channel, planned to launch on VM, Sky, Freeview and Freesat early in 2018. Apparently, it's still a secret, so shhh! don't tell anyone. ;)

Maybe this explains the shenanigans that took place earlier in the year??

Not sure what happened to their Freeview slot showing (A&E?) material.

Already posted this further up mate.

Sorry, never saw that.

Does anyone know if UKTV will be making their channels available to all subscribers over Christmas like they have done in the past?

Virgin Media Ireland customers have been told that there will be a €5 increase in January 2018.

Still showing A&E material between 4am and 6am. Not sure what the audience reach is at that time, it seems to just be an EPG placeholder.

It sounds "niche", I can't say it's something I will be watching. Details are a bit vague at the moment. I'm wondering if this will actually replace the existing "Community Channel".

Be interesting to see who sponsors the channel (if anyone!). Sky are really feeling the pinch now.

Sky are just copying Discovery.

All Discovery, Quest and Eurosport channels are sponsors by Virgin Media as of Thursday night.

We have seen rumours that Sky Two is set to be brand Sky Replay (Date TBC) as we know that Sky Two now rebroadcast Sky Living shows as well as Sky One.

Thanks for info

Is the unknown 16 channels still there?

Still there but with no progress noted on the last available scan data.

Test V1 is testing on the NGRHEE Bromley, TTA Bromley DMC (Bromley RHE), TTA Knowsley DMC (Hayes_RHE) & Code Download Test (Portsmouth) networks. The rest still being SDT only.

Actually channels have had sponsorship long before Discovery as did buses and trains so who is copying who?
And if you see how silly my comment was you'll understand the silliness of your "Sky are just copying Discovery" comment.

Are they and STV AD broadcasting any thing?
