Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Was reading the great review of the Tivo box on the VM blog ... http://virgintivo.blogspot.com/p/tv-...-reviewed.html

What i ve still not managed to figure out 100% after having the Tivo box for about nearly 3 weeks is the 3 tuners inner workings!
In the review above it says....
"You can view what's on each tuner without switching to it (via the Info bar) and of course, change the channel on that tuner".

Now i can view the other 2 tuners and click on them and even rewind them! But HOW do i "change the channel on that tuner"?

Or is it just a case of the last channel you have been on becomes one of the tuners, as it seems over complicated that way, please tell me i am missing something simple?

Cheers in advance guys.

Good question as I was wondering that too. Quite often when I click on Info and scroll down 2 of the tuners are on the same channel, yet neither are channels I have been watching

I've noticed that too. Woke up this morning and all 3 tuners were on Pick Tv. And I never watch that channel. While I'm here, does anyone know if there's a way to record a specific season of a show? I've watched the first two seasons of Fringe on VOD, but it was only when I finished I noticed that season three was halfway through broadcasting on SKY1. I don't really want to record the first two seasons.

Yeah easy just go into Search and Browse - find the show and you can set Wishlists for any particular episodes you want.

When you highlight one of the two background tuners and press OK, it becomes your current live tuner, and what was your live tuner becomes a background (in other words, it swaps them). Channel change always works on your current live tuner, so if you want to change channel on background tuner, swap them, change channel, then swap back again.

You change the channel on the tuner by selecting the tuner (from the info menu) and then changing the channel. You can then switch to another (from the info menu) and change that channel if you wish.

Thats what you would do if you were, for example, wanting to retain a buffer for 2 sporting events.

+1

But it annoys me it doesnt keep your place at the last prog you highlighted on the main guide, it always reverts to the first list of channels on the guide when you press it.

I am sure V+ never done that?

That means your Tivo re-booted.

That's odd then because (I presume) it's supposed to re-start on the last channel watched. It does with mine anyway; when it reboots.

Well there's only S3 being shown at the moment but I would wait for the repeats as we're only a handful of eps off the Season Finale.

You're right. If you already have a tuner on the channel you are tuning to, it swaps them instead.

Tonight we set a series link for "How its Made" for my son, we set it to "new" only as he has seen all the others... so in theory it should ignore all the repeats that are on as they dont have a "new" status on the EPG. However as we were setting it up, it told us that various ones would clash with other programmes I have set to record.

SO I went in to check planned recordings... they were listed as it was going to record them all (even though repeats) so this doesnt work properly.

Also what is the point in recording hiccups and why does it list every single episode and not put them into folders so that you dont have to scroll through every single episode.

Cheers Carl. That was my question. I didn't explain it very well though. I want to set up a wishlist to record Season 3 of Fringe, as I've already seen Seasons 1 & 2 and don't want to watch them again. I could just opt to record New & Reruns but I'm deleting enough as it is. I've only had TiVo since Weds, but my TiVo is getting a little over familiar. It's been lit up like a Xmas Tree since Friday, recording suggestions. About 60% of which are of no interest to me.

Yeah as per my earlier post just find it from Search and Browse and go to Episode Guide and select the episodes or series you want. When they are shown they will be recorded.

Are you giving it the 3 thumbs down for the programs its recording that are of no interest?

Tonight it impressed me, I set up a series link for a 3 in a bed and it suggested and recorded a program called "the hotel" on channel 4! Only problem is it recorded the channel 4 version and not the 4hd channel! Shame really! It should default to a hd channel if there is one available.

As I've recently said over at DS, I agree with the HD-less Suggestion logic.

HD Suggestions would eat up more disk space, meaning less suggestions for you to try out, and if you did like a suggestion, surely you would create a HD Series Link based on that suggestion?

Besides, the decision to like or dislike a suggestion would surely come down to the content of the programme and not what resolution its broadcasted at, no?

I agree that the option to specify HD for suggestions would be good for people who desire it. Personally, I would put adding reminder functionality first (but that's just me ;)).

Yes they are just single shows - if you decided you wanted to start recording the series you would need to set a series link. A wishlish could also be set to look out for specific episodes from earlier in that series or past series if you wanted.

Ok thanks. So if I set a wishlist how does this work, can I include the name of the series or episode in the keyword?

Andy1 02-05-2011 08:34

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

If you find the show through 'search and browse' the episode guide will give you details of past series and episodes and there is an option to automatically create a wishlist for any episode (it uses the show and episode titles).

You can of course also set manual wishlists based on all sorts of criteria. Eg Any episodes of Top Gear where 'BMW' is mentioned in the description etc.

Re: Tuners

I could be wrong (maybe these pills I'm on are causing me to hallucinate) but I'm sure I saw on my TiVo a couple of weeks back that upon changing channels it scrolls through the available tuners so if you decide to go back to the previous channel you still have a buffer??

Having run some tests it doesn't do this anymore and just sticks on 1 tuner unless the channel selected happens to be on another tuner in which case you do get a buffer.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Andy1 02-05-2011 10:47

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Im not sure I know what you mean about scrolling through when changing channels.

You can switch between the buffered channels and set what channels they are covering by pressing 'info' and scrolling down to the bottom option. Is that you meant?

press info and scroll down to RRR to swap between different tuners, you should be able to have 3 buffers going if nothing is recording

Perhaps I worded this incorrectly as I am aware about how to change the 3 tuners from the info page but this is not what I meant.

I'll try again using an example:

Tuner 1 is on BBC1, Tuner 2 is on Sky1 and Tuner 3 is on FX. Nothing is recording.

I am watching Tuner 1 (BBC1) and decide to change the channel to ITV1. By doing this I am sure it used to keep BBC1 buffering by replacing FX with BBC1 so if I press 'last channel' it will go back to BBC1 and therefore be able to rewind the buffer if required.

I don't think it does this anymore (if it did in the first place)

Hope that explains my query

richardc1983 02-05-2011 11:10

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

The channel your watching is always the tuner that will be changed when you change channel. You need to buffer another channel by doing it on the info section of the tuners then when you have the channels buffeting that you want you can use last channel button to change. Otherwise changing channels directly erases the buffer and starts rebuffering on new channel.

Thanks Richard.

As I said, I thought my example was happening a couple of weeks back but not any more.

The issue surrounding BBC Click as already been discussed here. However, I thought I'd mention this post over on the TCF, which explains the situation in detail.

I have gone back through the listings for BBC News for the past month and occasionally a late update for Click with episode details is released - but maybe too late for TiVo to use. But Click is not always shown in all of the time slots - so that is not even a 100% pattern.

The other important thing to remember, is that it being a news channel the programme can be dropped without any notice. But if it has correct weekly data in TiVo and TiVo records the dropped event - it will not automatically record it later,

This is the listings for Click for next week - looking at it how do you work out what the different is between any episode. Is every episode going to be a 30 minute episode (or 15 minutes), which is the NEW episode - and are all the episodes the same edition?

Also, they have programme info for the last edition - but that seems to relate to an episode weeks ago. So is it a repeat from weeks ago or is it an error? It is not flagged as a repeat so is it NEW?

If anybody can come up with a system which will not get complaints of missing episodes - then I'll ask if it can be reviewed.

I suspect there isn't any logic as such at the moment. It is simply recording what other people with similar tastes have thumbed. So if they thumbed the SD versions, that's what you get.

I wonder what happens if you habitually thumb-up HD programmes and thumb-down the SD equivalent?

EPG issues strike again.

Currently on Comedy Central (& HD) my EPG says 'Mike & Molly' and 'Two & a Half Men' is on.

Now, shows not being tagged as new I can handle but the wrong show completely is a major issue

That's not true because the ratings are stored against the program, not the channel it was aired on.

You can't thumb up the show on an HD channel and then down on SD because once you thumb it up on the HD channel it'll also be thumbed up on the SD channel as well, because Tivo will see it's the exact same show.

Of course  But I was meaning when no recordings are taking place.

This is a weird one!

Even though both eps have the correct (ie not generic) episode synopses, and my SL is set to 'new only', both of this week's showings of "NCIS: LA" on Sky1 have been scheduled to record.

Even more interestingly, the given OAD is 11/05/11; even though the scheduled premier date is actually 08/05/11.

Huh?

Yep, I gave 2 thumbs up for NCIS on FX, yet NCIS on FX HD also has 2 thumbs up.

Definately, I'm sure it will come as a huge relief after years of court battles. :)

What are the chances of the things mentioned in the link below making it to the VM TiVO if they get the go ahead in the US?

I don't know, but VM have said they want the VM TiVo to be close in spec to the US Premier HD, so you never know :)

That's good news DF, would be a shame to see the Virgin flagship box lagging behind once new things get added to the Premiere.

I notice on the TiVo survey link that I posted, they mention a feature already on our boxes, so maybe the TiVo team in the US are learning from VM also. :)

However watching 90 mins of SD football is a big difference to 90 mins of HD football. My pref would be the option to always record HD if available.

I have 182 suggestions using just 42% disc space with all my other recorded shows, I think I could live with a quarter of that if it meant suggestions where in HD. Once you get used to HD SD looks very blurry and dampers the enjoyment.

whats worse is a lot of the C4 suggestions are being recorded from the AD channel.

Shouldn't make any difference, unless you have AD switched on :)

AD sound track is only made available by the broadcasters on the London version of their channels - so to get AD soundtrack you have to have the London channels available as well as your local channel.

Why then do you have to enable AD on the AD channels, couldn't they just make the AD audio stream the default one?

The "AD" channels are actually the normal London channels renamed, so both audio streams are required otherwise people in London wouldn't be able to turn AD off.

Well not totally, I am still wondering why I can no longer use the EPG for Catch Up. When someone asked earlier I was able to scroll back on the EPG, click on the programme, which would take me to yet another window, then then the programme would play. Now it just takes me to the main On Demand window and i have to do it that way, so obviously something has changed with mine. I keep thinking every day it will sort itself out, but it's still doing it

Just tried mine and it says play from on demand ( The hotel Inspector last night ), Then it says that on demand is unavailable. It says that there is a problem with on demand on the service status page ( With my phone number ).

It may be too early for the link to have been added for that yet - it doesn't work for me either.

Perhaps try last Wednesday's 'Deal or No Deal?'
