Probably Living HD will be on 111 and don't expect Living 2 et all to be around for much longer. They're to get the same treatment as the UKTV channels.

I reckon the EPG numbering will look something like this within the next 6 months:

109: Living
110: Living +1
111: Living HD
112: Another VMTV channel
113: Another VMTV channel +1
114: ITV 2
115: ITV 2 +1
116: ITV 3
117: ITV 3 +1
118: ITV 4
119: ITV 4 +1
120: ITV HD
121: Sky 1 etc

Virgin Central to be scrapped.

Or something like that!

About time, only ten years late!

What about Virgin1 you have not listed an Channel number for them before Sky1.

I assume you'd place those in 112 and 113, where they've said 'Another VMTV channel'.

Analogue needs to be axed before there can be lots more channels, assuming VM wish to launch more.

So I'd say, April/May next year is the first opportunity for a mass launch of new stuff.

This is not a criticism, i'm just interested to know. I know analogue hogs bandwidth, but just how short of space are VM? Are they really that bandwidth constrained? and will this stop them getting HD channels up to say a dozen by analogue switch off in April

they could add in thoery about another maybe 6-10 hd channels or a combination of sd and hd channels with about 4-5 sd for 1 hd channel, but that is on top fo the space they have left after make both networks the same but if they drop channels form the harmonise process they could add few more

No but if they where they could jsut add maybe 3-4 new transport streams to caryr maybe a extra 8 hd channels, or if they got instant acces to sky hd jsut shut off anaologue today , the ceo alreay said if they get access before shut off they would shut the anaologue quicker

I cant remember where i seen it, but i seen a report from teh asian channel provider sayig they are trying to get new channesl onto virign, so i would assume they woudl want ot get zee channesl onto both networks. The new channels are also subject to space on virign

Virgin currently carry all the Zee channels. The only exception was Zee Gujarati but that has closed down.

I know Geo are in discussion with VM to carry their channels. ARY and Star are missing some channels on Virgin and I'm sure they will be looking to launch the rest of the channels on Virgin so that customers on Virgin can get the same deal as Sky or even better.

They added 30 channels earlier in the year and never got past the testing phase

4 Setanta channels have closed since

1 Arsenal has closed

2 ESPN SD channels added

6 HD channels added

If 1 HD channel = 4 SD channels

Then I calculate they have 13 SD channels spare or have I miscalculated

Geo on Virgin Media UPDATE.

I email Geo to ask whether they were in talks with Virgin and got the following reply:

Quote:

We have been in contact with them and they have so far not responded positively citing capacity constraints however our desire to achieve universal distribution will always remain at the core of our business operations. We are constantly exploring mediums of access beyond the current distribution platforms and will definitely be approaching Virgin again.

Hi Media Boy, two questions to ask, l have read on this thread that The Paranormal channel want to get onto the VM network, but have been told no, is this where vm are holding a gun against customers wishes.

And is there any news on Blue Square Football, l beleive there were talks and the result would be any day.

About 6 months ago, most areas still had about 30 analogue channels. Now, according to this poster on DS, its down to around 25 channels now (at least in his area) as well as a barker and some audio channels which take up very little space anyway.

So going by that, yes they are still capacity constrained for now.

Six months ago, there was 75 slots available divided up between:

30 analogue tv
27 digital tv
6 VOD and interactive apps
the rest broadband

1 slot will carry 2 HD channels using MPEG2, which is what VM use.

So that should give an indication as to the state of play now.

No I don’t think you are – unless we are both suffering from creative memory syndrome! I spent ages prior to making my post trying to find it and ended up going round and round in circle on the BBC web site.

Perhaps someone else here will have better luck.

Test schedule on is non HD V-boxes only as they can't show HD channels... you'll need a V+HD box to view and it's already started broadcasting :)

I think they have overlooked publishing the schedule on the non HD boxes TBH though :)

I'd agree with that as all it remind us of is MTV Europe (even in the way it repeats the shows it plays :D) how soon until they spoil it by either showing countless dance/pop videos or by showing endless MTV reality shows? :(

ha ha.. yeah... oh I do hope they don't spoil it with reality crap and too much commercial dance stuff. :)

I'm guessing adverts are coming soon though.

arsenal match IS in HD :) pre-match studio talk and stadium cameras were SD with SD graphics but after the advert break it came back with the 1minute silence for bobby robson and the feed and the graphics were in HD:)

I have a quick question about Chuck being broadcast in 3D on the 25th. If I were to record it on my V+, could I then watch it in 3D as a recording, or is it only the original broadcast that'll work?

If you go to the Virgin1 website, click on the big Chuck picture which says some stuff about 3D, and click the subscription link, you can subscribe for 6 issues for just 60p.

We can hope. I still can't see why Virgin undervalue the CSC Media Group channels. :td:

I wish it would, I see it a fair bit at the local pub and even though it shows a lot of emo rubbish it's still a decent channel.

Music OD doesn't seem to carry anything that would really compare to Scuzz (unless you like Metro Station or crap like that). :(

Why do they only carry 3 of them and not all the channels they offer?

From the first post
Quote:

Virgin Media ''Are currently planning a future launch of BBC News multiscreen across Ex-ntl and Ex-CW areas of Virgin TV.
Am surprised they haven't scrapped the multiscreen in favor of a BBC News iPlayer similar to the one on Virgin Central that can play the news loops on demand - or even all the videos available on the BBC News website.

Indeed. I sometimes wonder whether the BBC Red Button team learnt anything from BBCi Hull.

Indeed, almost all of BBC RB on VM is a bit of a disappointment when you consider what the platform is capable of, but the exceptions - the Sport Multiscreen plus its associated text service, and iPlayer - perform so poorly that it's not difficult to understand why they don't seem interested in aiming for anything better than a state of not quite parity.

It's a shame, really - for all its archaicness (although, to be fair, play with the much more recent RenderCast and try to tell me that's not significantly eccentric) VM's current platform can be quite capable - but it's just sooo damn slow when it comes to the clever stuff.

And anyway, I'm not sure why you'd even want the multiscreen, as it is on exTW, because I personally think it's horrid - it's slow, picture quality leaves a lot to be desired, lip-sync is noticeably out and you can't access anything else from within the app.

Sam (who is wondering whether a concise "I agree" would have been sufficient!)

Keep the horses and it sounds like 11-a-side polo to me! ;)

Maybe Arsenal TV would have lasted if they had given the players ponies. :(

Yeah I know it's the sole reason I bought a freesat box for but it's for the inconvenience of switching between that and cable that I want it on cable for ;)

Given the number of TV and Radio channels to be added to ex-TW it would be a shame if VM dropped two of the three radio channels to be added to ex-CW/ex-NTL. How much bandwidth would that save them?

4 radio channels = 1 SD channel

Sorry, thanks for the info. but it was kind of a retorical, facetious question.

I mean, would half an SD channel break the bandwidth bank in order to align the ex-TW and ex-CW/ex-NTL networks without compromising their current lineup?

Both RTE and DW may have a small(ish) UK listener base but with dwindling broadcast sources for these (i.e. no RTE on MW and reduced DW on SW) they can surely still be squeezed in with the other 'must have' radio stations.

Just had lunch with a buddy of mine that works in the facility where ESPN is played out of in the UK and he said that there is a lot of commotion going on behind the scenes about the delay in getting the facility upgraded to play out in HD. He seems to think mid October although he could be mistaken that with mid September.
