Scott Pilgrim vs. the World 9/10
Really funny, one of those films we're looking forward to seeing again, to catch the bits we missed as were laughing at previous line :)
Cool mix of Kill Bill, Kick Ass and Spaced!

Haven't read the books, but will add them to the ever expanding Amazon wishlist.

Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay - 4/10.

Mildly amusing, rather than funny - probably wouldn't even have been that if not for the 3/4 bottle of Pinot Noir.

re: Rate the last movie you saw

This is England 9/10

The only Shane Meadows film the missus and I had seen was Dead Man's Shoes which we thought was excellent.

So when we saw adverts for This is England '86 we were hoping Ch4 would show This is England as I've recorded some of his other films which hav ebeen on Ch4, Film 4 and BBC but never got round to watching them.

So tonight we watched This is England to see if the tv sequel will be worth watching, if it's half as good as the film, it certainly will be.

Like Dead Man's Shoes, This is England has scenes which are brilliantly funny, followed by scenes full of suspense, which sometimes end up in something horrible, and sometimes a huge sigh of relief :)

Brilliant edge of the seat stuff, looking forward to the tv series.

The other thing is, it's interesting how a film made a few years ago, about a group of ppl in the 80s, is completely relevant today

Scot Pilgrim Vs The World - 9/10, absolutely loved it, can see it becoming a bit of a cult classic though as its not doing very well in the states, seems to be a bit of a Marmite movie.

Busy weekend for movies. Saw 2...

1) Back To The Future (new digital presentation). Excellent film, excellent image and sound. 8/10

2) Buried. An unusual concept for a film (Ryan Reynolds plays a truck driver who wakes up in a coffin after being kidnapped and buried with a couple of chemical glow sticks, a torch, some water and a mobile phone and the who film is about his attempts to get rescued), but excellently realised and really quite tense. 9/10

Yep. I agree, it is a good film. I liked the way that it dovetailed with the first film, and in the process, gave more background to the first film.

Very scary. I think it's helped by some very believable characters, some good actors playing those characters and very good use of special effects (especially sound, as a lot of the stuff happens off screen).

Saw 3D 5/10

I'll start off by saying missus and I love Saw and Saw II, and really like Saw 3-6. 3-6 we saw at the cinema and rewatch all the previous films to remind ouselves of what's what.

Saw 3D however is crap :(

The traps really are the stars, as the director made a good job of them, adequate use of 3d, but can't direct ppl for toffee :(

The main detective is aweful.

Some of the traps really are very "cool", and inventive.

there are 2 redeeming bits.
Spoiler:

the scene with Jigsaw at the book signing, and we thought the last 5-10mins were brilliant to fill in the last few blanks

As a whole the 3d was wasted, blood flies out the screen a few times, nothing amazing. Saw 6 was originally going to be 3d but I think in the documentary on the DVD they thought the tech wasn't ready yet.

The Jackass 3D trailer in 3d was the highlight of the film, closely followed by Machete trailer.

Yes and the new one is almost shot for shot but it is more graphic and sometimes a bit gruesome, I downloaded it after going to see "Let me in"

The version I downloaded was actually dubbed into english but I will watch any movie with subtitles if it is good, such as "Female Agents" or "The Lives of others" both brilliant and "Tell no one" which is in french and I bought because I had already read the book..

Re: Rate the last movie you saw

Two films recently..

Skyline: 4/10. Excellent special effects. That's the good part, and something you'd expect considering the film was made by a company who did the special effects for 2012, Iron Man 2 and The A Team. Trouble is, the characters have no depth. In a disaster movie (which this essentially is), you don't need a great deal of character depth, but they do need to have some trait you can at least vaguely identify with. At least I do. I have to have something about the characters I like, or really hate. This film offered nothing.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt.1 6/10
Not a bad film by any means, it's just it follows the first half of the book a little too closely, as a result, it's very slow in places, and, for some reason, Emma Watson in particular spends a lot of the film showing fear, anger or sadness. I say for some reason because she actually seems to get more screen time than Daniel Radcliffe.

Still, it is actually a good film, just a little slow as it is setting up a lot of things to happen in the final film.

I quite liked Saw. Thought Saw II was OK, and 3 passable. Didn't bother watching after that.

I thought I read somewhere that the reason they went for the 3d in the final saw is that the franchise lost a lot of money they wanted to recoup.

the missus and I rewatched the first 2 films recently to make sure we still liked this sort of humour and enjoyed them (I'd give them 8/10 each)

The second - and 2nd best - Brosnan Bond after GoldenEye.

Great action & gadgets, classic Bond cheese, and a modern (for the late 90s) take on Ye Olde Bond Villain, who was doing an updated variation of the You Only Live Twice / The Spy Who Loved Me evil plan.

Went to see this on Wednesday last, and I thought it was OK, but a bit too "fillery" ie, 3/4 good scenes, and the rest was just filler, though I know they were just going a setup for the final film so it was OK.

Compared to modern comedies, it'll seem rather stupid. There's just something about it, though...

It's also helped by the deadpan delivery, especially of Nielsen.

Was your birthday not in your BXB profile? I always forget about birthday threads there, 'cos ones here are automatic.

The Naked Gun 3 - 7/10

Not as good as the other 2, but it was still awesome. So over the last few days I've watched The Naked Gun Trilogy, Life of Brian and Airplane!. Now I need something else to watch, someone recommended watching The Holy Grail.
