I agree can't see the point personally , I can honestly say I've never used the one Channel 4 launched plus there only SD.

Surely my source is winding me up here or it'll be a online only channel?

Is it going to be in HD or should we expect the video to be blocky?

(sorry :D )

So the theory goes, although surely, if that's the case, it would be cheaper to just dump 5* +1 or 5 USA +1 onto the stream. They tend to fill a large proportion of their extra channel content with teleshopping already. How thinly can they spread their actual content?

I wouldn't read too much into that! VM are probably trying to get their pound of flesh! Have Channel 5 actually got enough material worth repeating?

If they had, you'd think they'd be repeating it more on 5* and 5 USA rather than showing hours of teleshopping.

Netflix has reached Enfield although as I have a V+ box its no big deal - they updated at 01.16 - why they do it at that time I cant work out as it split up some recordings - years ago the box would restart close to 05.00 so a more sensible time.

Until they allow TiVo to play back recordings in the background I will stick with the V+ box.

box restarted again at 05.40 - not sure why .

He probably means that TiVo lacks a 'Copy to VCR/DVD' function that allows it to play back a recording in the background while you watch something else like the V+ has.

This is one of the reasons I prefer my V+ too.

If your V+ rebooted at 01:16, that wasn't done by VM. It had crashed. Give the VM faults team a call if it keeps happening.

Now that one was intentional. All V+ boxes were rebooted last night between 04:30 and 06:00 for some engineering work. It will happen several more times over the next few weeks, but always in this time slot.

I've tried comparing the range of programs and films that Netflix and Lovefilm offer. Lovefilm seems to have a larger range than Netflix when I look at the websites? The difference is so glaring that I wonder if I can't see all NetFlix's offerings and the full range is only visible to members?

Is this true or perhaps I missing something? Because if I'm not then I can't see any reason why I would choose Netflix over Lovefilm?

There seems to be a hell of a lot on Netflix that isn't immediately visible but can be found through the search function. I don't think it's very well implemented if I'm honest. We even had to search for Breaking Bad last night.

Currently in terms of content Netflix is ahead, and Netflix's original programming has been better received than LoveFilm's so that's where my money is. That said I'm beginning to wonder how far away I am from reducing my Virgin package as low as it can go, or even cancelling, and subscribing to both.

Ah cool, I like Bishops Stortford. Used to work in the town for a year or so some years back. Yeah it was on here when I woke up.:)

yes I do mean that as its the most useful function it has - I can be recording a batch to my HD/DVD Recorder while watching a previous recording - I use that function every day and I would be very reluctant to let my V+ go.

Unfortunately, the TiVo hardware (as far as I know) wasn't designed to do this

So it's not even something an update can change.

Yes, but if you get a 1TB TIVO box, you can put up to 500 hours of recordings on there without having to copy them all to your DVD recorder.

Netflix was only part of the update. There were many other things that make this a really good update even without Netlix.

More screens are now HD, enabling the small TV window to be part of the screen

Better feedback on clashes on planned recordings

Reorganising series links now works in the background instead of clogging up other tivo usage (reportedly; not tried it yet)

Back to back recordings on the same channel only take up one tuner, even I you have padding added.

The Tivo box is faster.

Did you even bother to find out what the update did, or did you just fancy having a moan?

The new BBC HD channels when launched on VM should be on the following EPG numbers:

BBC Three HD - 162
BBC Four HD - 163
BBC News HD - 604
CBBC HD - 710
CBeebeies HD - 711

Totally crazy channel allocations. Put BBC3 & 4 higher up the EPG than BBC2.

Why not move BBC2 HD to 185, then you could have:

BBC2 HD 185
BBC3 HD 186
BBC4 HD 187

or even move BBC Alba to 185, BBC2 HD to 186, & have the same pattern as with the additional ITV HD channels.

As I understand it, archiving to DVD is of dubious legality (in the UK anyway) because of a court case going back to the 1980's which established that recording TV programmes is legal only for personal use and only for time shifting purposes, ie strictly speaking you cannot make a permanent or distributable copy.

This is largely overlooked for analogue recordings of SD content (ie via a SCART cable), which is what V+ does. So far as I am aware no PVR permits copying of HD material.
