Although it would be nice to do, I doubt it's simple to achieve - especially when you have consider series links, and the fact that Virgin have both V boxes and TiVo that can receive HD channels

Sky Sports News in HD. I watch the SD version it a lot and would be great in HD not just for the women but also for Soccer Saturday with Jeff and the team, a show I tend not to miss if I can.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 4.

I have made a list of channels that broadcast on other TV providers in the UK (Freesat, Freeview, Wight Fibre but not Sky) & on UPC Ireland, since it's related to Virgin Media. These channels don't currently broadcast on Virgin Media, it is just to show what channels other providers carry. Maybe Virgin should carry all of these channels then they can say they offer all of the Freeview and Freesat channels.

I'd honestly be fine with that. I'm very very chuffed to be seeing Netflix before long. I know it sounds silly because I have compatible devices and could already be a subscriber but just the ease of having it all in one place will make it twice the product as far as I'm concerned. I'm a way off justifying the cost of a new tv-there's nothing wrong with the one I've got, but it's not one of these connected types so getting the app on TiVo will be great.

Netflix have changed their long term view:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/0...h&ir=UK%20Tech

"Netflix recently changed its "long term view" note to reflect the new way it sees itself: as a TV network."

"On Monday, Netflix made a bunch of small tweaks to the wording in a note meant to advise investors, first pointed out by BTIG analyst Rich Greenfield, but the most telling one is that Netflix changed the sentence that simply read "We are movies and TV shows" to "We are a movie and TV series network."

I wonder if through time we will see a linear Netflix TV channel launch?

They class themselves as a network now because of all the commissions they have done, House Of Cards, Arrested Development, Orange is the New Black, however they won't launch a linear channel, the Netflix format works too well, hence why they can afford these big money shows.

The only chance of seeing Netflix on linear tv is if they sell the rights to some of the content to existing broadcasters.

...we decided to take an Sky EPG (Electronic Programme Guide) but this did not give the expected increase in either listeners or advertisers and it was costing a fortune so we gave that up.

All we wanted to do was to revert to manual tuning as before. It was not known by us, nor our provider, that Sky had hardened their attitude to non EPG signals. We found that no Sky SD boxes would get our signal at all. Sky had nil interest in sending a software signal to make the boxes hear us. Then we found that each time they sent a general update to the HD boxes, this wiped the stored memory so that the listener had to go through the tuning process all over again and again....

I know that Radio Caroline is coming off satellite on 30 Setember, but are they closing on UPC too (as per MB list). If so, I guess that Radio Caroline won't be coming to VM.

.....Fashion One

Fashion One recently came off Freesat, not sure if it's on Sky. As Fashion TV is a much larger company and Is currently carried by UPC in Ireland, I would imagine it more likely that we would get the latter.

Thanks for this - interesting reading.

Does anyone know how many channels are on the sky system that do not have an EPG number (so how many others could potentially be affected by this?)

This will eventually become a VOD signpost channel.

Not many, but it will annoy people who have additional ITV regions tuned in.

Most on the ones without channel numbers are at the bottom of THIS list.

Yes, people really must stop posting such ridiculous statements. Of course there are more channels launching this year - the Sky channels we will be getting, Fox + and Disney HD are just some of the channels that we know are launching this autumn.

If it happens to be the opinion of the author, they should say so, and fair enough. But just making statements like this as if they are fact with no basis for the statement is just stupid and deliberately antagonistic.

That is good news if true, and totally in line with Liberty's strategy of bringing us as many programmes as possible from a variety of sources.

Where did you hear this? Is it likely to require a subscription or will it be on a pay per view basis?

All I can tell you at the moment is that it is being worked on right now (I have a trusted source very close to the project). A Windows 8 app will also make an appearance.

It good to see Virgin Media has found 'Red' a new home after selling Virgin1 to Sky.

The Virgin1's old knitted mascot 'Red' was seen by Media Boy HQ on Tiddlers TV when it was added to Virgin Channel 700 at 1am last night.

That's the red animal that I was referring to earlier. The "coming soon" slate was replaced by this on and off all afternoon. I am pretty sure I saw it move at one point, which reminded me of the old teletext moving graphics :D

I'm not sure I welcome the LoveFilm news. I was holding out a feint hope that Netflix would be included in a bundle, but there cannot be any way that both Netflix AND LoveFilm will be included so I think that probably puts paid to the chance of just one of them being.

To be honest bud if people on the trial are having to subscribe that tells you it's gonna cost and had to phone lovefilm yesterday about a ios7 fault and asked about it coming to TiVo told me app is on the way deal done with vm

Tiddlers TV

Tiddlers TV, is it going to be a red button shortcut to OnDemand or a "real" TV channel? To be at 700 in front of the rest of the kids section is pretty good if a channel.

To save everybody a lot of bother, I suggest that both Netflix and LoveFilm are carried by the platform and included in XL :D :D

Yes, VM do seem to now be using the prominent x00 EPG numbers to push their VOD content in each genre.

As of September 20th I have seen no news on any new channels set to launch next week from insiders - but saying that I did not know about Tiddlers TV launching on Virgin Channel 700 (Virgin's 58th channel launch of 2013).

I subscribe to Lovefilm, so I would really be chuffed if it came to VirginMedia.
I could then move the PS3 to one of the rooms......... less clutter = happy camper.

I made the point a few weeks ago on here that adding OTT providers added an element of risk in my opinion , as it stands now there's many people don't know about Netflix and Lovefilm instant however I'm sure they will when its showcased on their pay tv providers STB , someone signing up and finding there mainly watching the OTT content could take the view it would be cheaper to downgrade or cancel and stream it on another device your post seems to suggest that some will consider these options.

Most sports fans will stay loyal however its a move that could also impact Sky , Netflix and Lovefilm instant is £10.98 and both include HD compare that too around £25 for Sky Movies with HD fee on VM and you can certainly see people moving to the cheaper option.

If you think this is likely to be a serious issue, then surely it's evidence in favour of the suggestion that these services will be bundled free of charge in the higher TV packs?

I'm not so sure. The way I see it is (and I'm guessing here) that the majority of people still choose Virgin for broadband first and end up with TV as part of the deal, rather than with Sky where they choose TV first and then take their broadband product. If that's correct, then it stands to reason that the vast majority of Virgin customers (and generalising here, but especially those with a TiVo that have arguably demonstrated a liking of tech by having got one) already have devices capable of accessing Netflix and the like. Couple that with the inertia that customers in this country are renowned for, and I think it unlikely that providing OTT apps will create any significant dent in Virgin's top tier subscriber base.

That said I will certainly be reviewing my options. I have said elsewhere that BT Sport's lunchtime Premier League matches don't suit my work schedule in the same way that ESPN's early evening matches used to (and that's before we get in to a discussion about the quality of their offering), and I gave up on Sky Sports as poor value for money some time ago. I do find myself paying for TV XL now almost solely for Fox and to get HD variants which I really can live without. With shows like Walking Dead are finding their way to LoveFilm, albeit slowly, I really could see me dropping my TV package by a tier and using any saving towards an OTT subscription which will provide me with more content.

We'll see. I certainly intend to subscribe to Netflix as and when it arrives on TiVo, and I'm out of contract in December, which is roughly when I expect to receive notice of any price increases from Virgin. I shall probably use the one or two months in between to make a detailed analysis of exactly what I make most use of and what I can do without and will go from there.

BUT, isn't it great that I'll have these decisions to make. You can't fault Virgin for the choice they're trying to offer.

BSKYB have lost the rights to show the James Bond movies with all movies except Sky fall showing an expiry date of 30th September 2013 on the On Demand service on sky. This will mean no more Sky movies 007 channel re-brands on sky movies for a while now.

The question is who will pick up the rights the front runner is probably ITV to re pick up the rights I'd like to see the beeb pick up the rights but I can't see it happening tbh

It doesn't follow that just because Netflix is in the XL pack (as I hope it will be) that Lovefilm would have to be as well.

However, if we did get both in XL, I would be overjoyed! Unfortunately, it just seems too good to be true. Having said that, look at what they must have paid for BT Sports. Those of us who don't like sport haven't benefited at all from this arrangement, so having Netflix and Lovefilm included in XL would make up for this.

I would imagine that if they did both go into XL, then there would be an increase in subs to compensate for the cost of supplying.

However, I would expect both to be available as an app only, and thus subscription based

Maybe Virgin could cancel all of their current on demand content contracts for "Virgin Movies" and make Netflix and Lovefilm their default movie on demand providers? Netflix for free in XL and Lovefilm on a pay per view basis for those who want to watch new titles on demand.

That wouldn't work as neither have recent titles, so you would have to wait years to be able to watch a movie.

Maybe Film4, Sony Movies or Movies 24 (Universal) will pick them up.

The Bond movies are now own by Sony Pictures Entertainment.

I think it does. Netflix and LoveFilm are in direct competition. Netflix makes original content, LoveFilm responds by signing exclusive content deals, etc. I cannot see LoveFilm doing a deal with Virgin to be a paid for by subscription OTT app on the TiVo platform, if the same platform will give the customer access to their closest rival for no extra cost. It just wouldn't make any sense - it would be like standing next to your largest competitor and telling everybody that it is they, and not you, that offer the best value for money. If LoveFilm is coming to TiVo then it's on the same basis as Netflix. ie. They're either both paid for or both at no extra cost. In my opinion.

Personally, I like the idea, although Virgin Movies should stay to provide a "box office" style service (ie. at or around the time of DVD release). Then of course, you have the problem of renegotiating all of those carriage deals which include OD offerings, and those customers who pay for Sky Movies would still want Sky on demand, for example. I'd happily give up the current OD offering for free Netflix and LoveFilm, with Virgin Movies as a ppv option. But I don't see it happening.

Could certainly scrap Virgin's anaemic, non-catchup, TV On demand service and replace with Netflix.

It's almost impossible to "discover" stuff on it, certainly much harder than Netflix, which is great at bringing relevant content to your attention, and content comes and goes on whim, with frequently incomplete series and seasons.

Because they have different content, maybe? You may as well ask why they bother with Sky Movies when they have Picturebox. After all, they both "do the same job" as you put it.

This is a US equilavlent of Sky Movies/Now TV, the likelyhood of it appearing this side of the pond is 0.

I believe LoveFilm used to have a PPV style service, but I'm sure it would be cheaper to haggle BlinkBox in for new releases. Personally I would rather Virgin left that to 3rd party's, I'm sure they don't make that much of PPV Sales anymore!

Well I'm pleased for you. :)

Almost every time I have tried to watch a "boxed set" on Virgin episodes have either been missing from the start or disappear half way through watching a season.

I've also frequently had misnamed or broken episodes and episodes out of sequence.

Virgin typically only have a few seasons at a time. Netflix typically purchase the entire series from beginning to end.

Netflix tend to buy long term contracts. Virgin's are often only for a few months, requiring a mad dash to view.

And all that is on top of the fact that Virgin have no real way of bringing your attention to the majority of new stuff, so unless you are constantly scanning the index you don't find something has arrived until half way through its viewing window, making the short term contracts all the more problematic.

And Netflix just have so much more content than Virgin. Virign will never I suspect compete, which is why, I guess, they are happy to add it to their service (and full credit to them for that :) )

I am not trying to knock Virgin here. Adding Netflix is great news and their openess to OTT is fantastic. But, other than the "minor" problem that Netflix will not currently be available without a Tivo, if Virgin adds Netflix to their packages I really can't see why they would want the hassle of doing their own half-A***d job too!

Because they want the money. Think of VM as the landlord of a shopping centre. Netflix, Lovefilm, Picture Box etc pay VM a rental for a shop. They then open their shops and try to persuade VM customers to buy from them. VM want to fill as many shops as possible so they can get as much rent as possible from the owners. It doesn't care how many people use it, so long as it gets its rent.

I do think that Picture Box will have to up its game though, it's very poor value compared with the other two at the moment, however it does have the advantage that you don't need a TiVo to receive it.

I am not trying to knock Virgin here. Adding Netflix is great news and their openess to OTT is fantastic. But, other than the "minor" problem that Netflix will not currently be available without a Tivo, if Virgin adds Netflix to their packages I really can't see why they would also want the hassle of doing their own half-A***d job too!

If I am being honest, I have not watched any series on "on demand" - only the occasional program, but when I have watched, I have not had any problem.

Maybe I should try!

I wouldn't say a serious issue hence my comment of 'element of risk' however I agree bundled would be appealing to many.

Fair point and one Mike Fries has stated in a recent debate on the future of pay tv with James Murdoch at Euro Summit 13.

BUT, isn't it great that I'll have these decisions to make. You can't fault Virgin for the choice they're trying to offer.

Agreed choice is always a great thing , Netflix certainly have some good exclusive original content.

About time! I hope that the Lovefilm app contains all available content (and not end up like the version on the Sammy TV which didn't have all content available to stream).

The TiVo search feature will become a lot more useful now, especially if the entire Netflix/Lovefiilm libraries are included in the search.

I don't think VM should be too worried about people dumping XL for Lovefilm/Netflix - I use both streaming services and I see them as additional content rather then full replacements for XL. I mean, the new series of Haven starts next week on Syfy - that won't be on Lovefilm/Netfilx any time soon. Then again, the likes of 24 are on Netflix - every single episode in HD and 5.1 surround sound! VM's VOD library simply can't compete.

Add in the extensive movie selection and streaming exclusives to both services (House of Cards on Netflix; Vikings on Lovefilm) and its a win win. :)

Now......where's that TVAW Android app? And come to think of it, Universal HD? C'mon VM, I want my Rookie Blue and Motive in HD. :erm:

I find that a bit surprising, though up to now, I probably only use it for the latest series of Law and Order SVU. However, according to an article on TVWise, they are changing their focus and looking at a new type of acquisitions. Bates Motel and Sleepy Hollow being examples. I saw the pilot of Sleepy Hollow on Hulu and it really does deserve an HD picture and 5.1 soundtrack to do it justice.

Hopefully these new type of shows will bring in a bigger audience and make HD viable for VM management.

Many thanks for your email.

We do not have any current confirmed plans to launch Universal Channel HD on Virgin Media. We are always looking to improve our services to our viewers across all platforms, Virgin Media included, and are in on-going conversations with them.

Like all businesses, however, these decisions and discussions are based on commercial factors and currently we have not configured a deal with Virgin for an HD version of Universal Channel. It's great to know you would like to see an HD version of the channel on Virgin.

Please do write to them also and let them know.

Best wishes
