Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

I did force a connection today.
This morning, 10am my tivo epg was still showing the Me, my sex & I, even though tivo connected at 3.30am ish this morning, the next scheduled connection was sometime on friday, so without the manual connection my tivo would'nt have changed.

How come the connection at 3.30am didnt alter the epg?

My scheduled update was at 7:05 this morning and I had the old data, so the change to the EPG must have happened some time after that.

Terrible service from Tivo, this QT special was announced 2 days ago.
My V+ had it listed yesterday when I checked.

If you had every box on the network requesting the entire epg data every 15mins then it'd be a pretty major strain on the system.
That's over 100x the current load that the EPG servers have.

What would be better is if there was a major epg download every night, and then it checked more frequently for a file of changes which it could merge into the epg data.

Yeah, that's what I meant but you've put it across much better. The box would go out in search of new data bu only ever need to actually download anything when there's been a schedule change.

That's got to be possible surely?

So would free Wi-Fi.....er, wait a minute. :erm:

Getting really sick and tired of the EPG nonsense myself now. Even some suggestions aren't recorded correctly.

Not to get too off topic again talking about Media Center, but that is very similar to TiVO in that it is reliant on good quality guide data. I had three different sources of guide data and I only got good reliable info when I managed to get a nightly update from the sky OpenTV EPG working after some genius wrote an interpreter.

M$' official guide data was managed by a 3rd party and was often all over the place, routinely missing special programs, anything that was changed after the original schedule date etc etc. It would appear that TiVO is now falling foul of the same problem and I'd honestly admit to being glad at the moment that I haven't yet taken the plunge. The weekend where everyone's series links went belly up we were away visiting family. The wife 'fondly' remembers several occasions last year where MCE went mams skyward while we were away and any return to a less-reliable series link scenario will not be tolerated ;)

So - good old V+! ;) (Never thought I'd say that)

Reading through this forum it seems cable customers do not like the idea of buying equipment. Even worse the thought of paying for a repair.

Yes this is very true but at least we pay a upfront fee and then get all the call outs and box swaps for nothing extra. Like some company's where you need the insurance out of warranty?
