Have you got "Aspect Correction Mode" set to panel?

I've tried it on full screen, panel and zoom it doesn't make a difference to the picture quality. Out of interest I have a samsung 40 inch LCD tv.

I don't really know what to do in regards to returning or not. Hd is great sd is truly awful. It's just fuzzy. If I watch it from twice the distance then it looks ok. Up close and it's not good at all.

Same size make as me.

You want to set it to panel, that way it's not stretching the picture to fill the screen on some of the lower bitrate channel. With that setting on those channels TiVO has a better picture that V+.

Also what output resolution have you got set? 720p or 1080i?

Another thing worth looking at with your sammy is post processing. Have you got it on? Have you tried it turned off?

On the fix front, VM and TiVo have a fix coming that basically fixes the up scaling for 1080i and is due out this year at some time.

When I got my TiVo (changed from a SA V+) I thought I had some sort of eye condition happen over night! Within a week I couldn't see a problem (the mind is an amazing thing). Now I don't have a problem. ;) ;)

thanks for that I've set it to panel I'll see if its any better.

I have 576p, 720p, 1080i all ticked. I'm assuming it sends the best quality avaible out of what you have ticked to the tv??

I realise if I leave it i probably will just get used to it but part of me thinks hang on why should I get used to it??!! There was nothing wrong with my v+ and also they didn;t tell me that the damn thing would cost 3 pounds a month until after I'd upgraded and they were confirming the engineer visit. I am not exactly a low subscription either. I pay around 110 pounds a month. Why should I have to get used to something that is lower quality and pay more! There's something majorly wrong with that! Add that to the fact I paid 7 pounds to get sky sports hd to watch the rugby internationals to find out that sky have it on skyports hd3 and virgin only give me 1 and 2! sorry bit of a rant moment there!

No need to apologise about ranting, the rest of us don't!

On the output front your best off just picking one, 576p I would ditch, you may think "I'll let my TV up scale" but the problem with that is you have SD up scaled menus too, not a good look, also TiVo ignores it if you have any higher res selected (by design).

The up scaling bug is less noticeable at 720p but you do then get shimmer on some text on screen (not the menus). At 1080i everything looks fuzzier.

All this is IMHO so your results will differ, and the fix is coming I promise, plus fixes for a lot of those other TiVo annoyances, that's all I can say.

Thanks for the reply. I'll try 720p. I tried it last night but didn't really notice much difference.

I'll have a think about returning it. Despite the picture quality which is obviously a big problem one of the other things that really grinds against me with the tivo is on the tv guide not having page down/page up! Not to mention the DONG!! Thats annoying and I've not had it 24 hours! Both very minor problems in comparison to the picture quality though.

I'm guessing no one knows when they will issue a fix for it??

For page up/down use the channel up/down, you can turn off the bings in settings.

The best thing about TiVo for me is the suggestions, just remember to use the thumbs up/down and get ready to have something good to watch at any time no matter how rubbish TV is. :)

Use the channel up and down buttons to page. And you can turn the boings off in the Settings menu.

The picture quality fix is coming soon, but I can't tell you exactly when. As clint says, experiment with the various resolutions.

thanks for that thats really helpful! Page down was the straw that broke the camels back!!

I guess that means I have to put up with the damn rubbish picture quality now!!!

I will say though I think an aknowledgement from VM staff when you ask them directly about the SD issue though is something that should be addressed. I asked at least 2 people and they said they weren't aware of any issues. Even after I pointed out the 3 threads on this forum and the thread on their official support forums aknowledging the issues!

My personally feeling is if you stick with it, start exploring the pluses you will never go back.

As for CS not knowing about the issue then that's symptomatic of a bigger communications problem within the company, wish they would sort that.

sure I can genuinely see their are some great things about tivo which are in advance of v+.

I just begrudge paying 3 pounds (on top of 110!) for a reduced picture quality! even if thats only a temporary thing!

Totally understandable. :)

Re: TiVo Picture Quality

I've recently had a TiVo installed and found that I had to reset the picture settings to default on my Samsung plasma HDTV. Then I had to adjust the picture settings to my prefered preferences and turn off picture options such as Digital Noise Filter and MPEG Noise filter. Usually the filters were left on with my old Samsung V+ box but with them off now it makes big difference to the picture quality now when using TiVo.

I wouldn't be able to watch a fuzzy picture so i would send it back until it's sorted

Re: TiVo Picture Quality

Going from the correspondence on the Virgin's own TiVo customer site the SD problem appears to primarily affect Samsung screens. I have a Toshiba and the SD's good on both 720p and 1080i settings, marginally better on the former. I find that 720p is better for fast action and camera panning, whereas 1080i appears to have a little more HD 'sparkle'.

The SD problem also affects my Sony KDL-40EX403.
