Sky/Now TV offer something that Netflix don't; a large number of currently airing shows, and HBO/Showtime content. Sure there is overlap on the box set aspect, but there is enough of a difference for people to want both. I use both and I'm sure many other people do the same.

I doubt also that Sky will ever get Netflix as they'll want people going for Sky Cinema rather than elsewhere!

I don't know. I see no conflict, and if Sky reach the same conclusion, then it's possible.

More knowledge I doubt that , being honest Den I got the whole Netflix on pay tv boxes completely wrong.

If you remember I was of the opinion that adding it would be disruptive when many on here including Old Boy said it would be complementary.

Netflix is now positioning itself as a producer of high quality original content , year on year they are increasing their content spend on original commissions putting themselves in the shop windows of many of the pay TV platforms.

Adding Netflix to Sky isn't as easy as on the likes of VM and BT of that we agree because Sky produces many of its own shows and has a competing movie service that said it doesn't mean it can't be done. Comcast in the USA is the biggest cable TV provider and also own channels/content to and they've recently struck a deal , I believe satellite provider Dish Network also has a deal.

This is an interesting read.

Netflix show relatively old films (with a few exceptions). Sky cinema gives you access to the most recent released for streaming films.

The last line of the link you posted says "*This deal currently does not include Virgin Media customers" Hopefully a deal will be done by January.

It also said that PPV events will only be available as PPV - and HD subscribers will still get HD.

Thing is PPV events are currently free to BoxNation HD subscribers.

Yeah it's a complicated deal.

My understanding is that there will be PPV's next year for the likes of Golovkin Vs. Saunders and Mayweather Vs. Pacquaio II. Possibly 4 PPV's per year going forward for the biggest domestic and international cards.

Boxnation subscribers on SKY will get these shows included as part of their subscription at no extra cost on the Boxnation HD / Boxnation Box Office channel. Those who get Boxnation as part of the BT Sports pack, rather than subscribing directly from Boxnation, from January will not get these PPV shows as part of their package and will need to pay the PPV fee to watch.

"The ground-breaking deal will see a further ten events per year, including top tier pay-per-view events and other high-quality domestic shows broadcast, exclusively on BoxNation."

It's messy but clearly something will need to change on the Virgin Media platform to facilitate the PPV shows.

There was no commitment by Virgin Media to launch Amazon at this time. This story emanated from contributors to Cable Forum.

My personal view is that Sky should carry Netflix because this will give Sky satellite subscribers access to a bigger range of content from their box, making the whole service more attractive.

That certainly appears to be John Malone's view in respect of cable services, but I think Sky will be dragged kicking and screaming towards this same conclusion. The reason? Because other operators like VM and BT offer the service. Of course, Sky want to channel all their subscribers into watching Sky broadcasts, but competition will force them into accepting this inevitable step forward. They were latecomers to 'on demand' viewing for the same reasons. So my belief is that Netflix and Amazon will eventually come to Sky - the only question is how long can they hold out?

I don't see any conflict with Now TV, Den. That service is aimed at people who don't subscribe to Sky satellite services.

There is a fault with this logic. If their customers want Netflix, they will subscribe to it anyway. For example, my eldest daughter has Sky but also subscribes to Netflix and Amazon.

If Sky provided these services on their own box, it would be likely to attract more customers.

That will only last until existing rights Sky have with all the major film studios expire.

Netflix have a good range of original TV series as well as a back catalogue of films and TV programmes. The films aren't that old!

Sorry OB but that's your poor understanding of technology , the reason cable had On Demand long before Sky is the fact that cable is two way satellite is not. Satellite providers had more technical challenges to overcome before releasing an On Demand product.

Yes, I understand that, but a workaround was available via an internet connection. I believe that Sky chose not to pursue on demand more vigorously as it would impact on their advertising revenues. Eventually, they had to embrace on demand, otherwise they would have been left behind.

Ad revenues for them are miniscule when compared to subscriptions , there's only so much you can do on a slow broadband line. Openreach didn't publicly launch a FTTC product until 2010.

mm is spot on. Sky could only do VOD once enough of their customers had a suitably-fast internet connection and also Sky HD, which IIRC was their first box to have an ethernet port.

Well spotted. Hopefully the word "currently" carries some weight.

Maybe this is why Boxnation HD was never added to VM as we won't need it if it's carried on BT Sport?

Plus from 2017 you'll get 20 free BoxNation fights on BT Sport so things ain't so bad mate. :)

Hahaha yes! "we never want to rise prices but unfortunately...." This year many price increases with sod all to show for it. I got a questionnaire about virgin media the other day. I was quite polite to be honest but also said i hate price rises with nothing to show for it. At least in the past i could kid myself it was going up by a few quid for the sky HD channels or something. They claim the price rises are due to upgrades to their broadband. Since im on 150MB and during peak times I get less than 10MB and have reported it for over 3 years i dont really accept that as a good enough reason!

Maybe that's what the last price rise was actually for, so they can then claim not to have increased prices since it's addition?

I wonder if BT are following the path of Setanta (and VM to an extent) and will also be adding Premier Sports & Racing UK to their sports package?

They get to offer standalone channels at a bargain price, whilst the standalone channels benefit by having many small subs to their channels as opposed to a few large ones.

Their extra reach may also benefit their advertising rates too.

Do we get anything else from the deal? I know we are missing Boomerang and CNN International in HD, plus TruTV +1.

Does TruTV+1 actually exist as a proper timeshift channel?

Some of the +1's on Freeview are only placeholders until more capacity becomes available and run for something like 1 hour a day in the middle of the night!

Info from another thread:

Eurosport announced today that it is going to show Pro12 rugby.

For those on the M/Player package MB says that some games will be on Eurosport Extra (AKA Quest).

I never knew that Eurosport used Quest as an overflow channel (or to promote their offering), whichever is the case.

Interesting, thanks.

Isn't Quest usually ex pay TV Discovery material?

According to this tweet, Made in Liverpool will launch on sky on 9th January:

It isn't anything new - during 2015 they have Superbikes and Rallying. In 2014 they have a live football tournament with Newcastle and West Ham involved.

When Discovery won the rights to the Olympics there was a commitment to showing 500 hours on Freeview. Everybody assumed this would be achieved using the Quest and Quest +1 slots. However Discovery got a sizable offer from the BBC which they took instead. I think Discovery see Quest as a sort of ITV4 and will only further look to boost Quest with live sport due to its presence on Freeview.

4Seven HD is coming to VM, no word on Channel 4 +1 HD yet.

These channels were initially Freeview exclusives in order to help fill the two temporary HD muxes and to drive take up of Freeview HD boxes, so this must have now come to an end.

Cheers Itshim.

If you still spend a lot of time abroad, you obviously won't be able to get Freeview, so 4Seven HD will be useful if it's a channel you use.

Motors TV is to close it's SD channel on VM channel 545 (and all other platforms) from March 2017.

Thereafter, it will only be available via VOD in HD.

Is this the start of the shift to On Demand viewing that some have predicted?

I've not actually had time to analyse the last scans I received in much detail but I did notice that they show that Kix has been added to the SDT, no video, audio streams etc available at present.

It will be nice to see how this develops, the report is a bit vague. Maybe the new HD channel will be coming soon to VM. I guess March 2017 is "soon" as far as this thread is concerned. ;)

Well, that is the big question, Richard, although to be fair, the reasoning behind this move appears to be to improve accessibility to their programmes (ie through computers, tablets, etc). But having said that it does point to the thinking that I have set out in another thread that as on demand becomes the norm, there is simply no point in continuing to incur the additional time, effort and expense of running a linear channel unless the revenues from advertising continue to be sufficient to turn a decent profit.

I am not sure how much advertising there is on Motors TV, so I cannot be sure that this logic formed part of the reasoning behind the decision.

Well, they were in the French form of Administration, so I assume that cost cutting is a factor in this decision.

The bulk of channels on VM are encrypted, even if they are FTA elsewhere. 4seven is encrypted so it would be strange not to encrypt the HD version.

Although I still haven't had time to check through the last scans I received, I did a count check for "4sevenHD" and it only found 5 occurrences out of 68 networks, so it would appear that this has only been added in a limited number of regions at this stage of testing.

Only showing as present in the Network Information Table for 4 regional networks. The last time I checked these were:

TTA Knowsley DMC (Hayes_RHE)
NGRHEE Knowsley
NGRHEE Bromley
Code Download Test (Portsmouth)

So not available to the general public and still not "testing" across the national network.

Not sure there's loads as from what I believe those who like sport Will opt for sky sports rather than BT sports. I know if I was a sky customer I'd choose sky sports rather than BT sport unless I could afford both.

I'd call it a placeholder rather than a test until the actual video / audio streams appear across the national network. The Service ID for Kix is 1713 (Transport Stream 17) - it currently shows up in the NIT for:

TTA Knowsley DMC (Hayes_RHE)
NGRHEE Knowsley
Code Download Test (Portsmouth)
TTA Bromley DMC (Bromley RHE)

As we know from the situation with Fox News, placeholder channels can be around for a long time before the channels go live.

4SevenHD (SID 3503 TS ID 35) and Amazon Video (SID 4403 TS ID 44) show in the NIT for:

TTA Knowsley DMC (Hayes_RHE)
NGRHEE Knowsley
NGRHEE Bromley
Code Download Test (Portsmouth)
TTA Bromley DMC (Bromley RHE)

but as we know, video and audio streams have already been added to customer facing networks for 4SevenHD across the national network, NIT data and encryption should follow shortly.

Fox News (SID 2015 TS ID 20) shows up in the Network Information Table for the following regions:

TTA Knowsley DMC (Hayes_RHE)
NGRHEE Knowsley
NGRHEE Bromley
Code Download Test (Portsmouth)

The Worldbox related "Russian Tier" (SID 123 TS ID 1) is in the NIT for:

TTA Knowsley DMC (Hayes_RHE)
TTA Bromley DMC (Bromley RHE)

The French Tier (SID 119) and Polish Tier (SID 120) show up in the NIT for all networks but still no sign of any French / Polish Worldbox apps in the TIVO apps section.

There is still no NIT activity for:

Arabic Hafla
That's Solent

Indicating that test aren't taking place for these placeholders.

Over the last month or so:

TJC moved from TS ID 8 SID 801 to TS ID 19 SID 1916
4Music moved from TS ID 14 SID 1406 to TS ID 43 SID 4310
ClublandAkaChilledNow (the app) closed on TS ID 44 SID 4411 being replaced by Clubland TV TS ID 21 SID 2132 which also links to the IPTV streams app.
XXX Brits took the old XXX Mums space on TS ID 4 SID 415 & 415 (although it took the EPG slot formerly occupied by the My Ex Girlfriends channel)
My Ex Girlfriends was removed from the EPG and from TS ID 19 SID 1911. Although its NVOD service on SID 1907 has not yet been removed from the NIT.

Bay TV Swansea (TS ID 101 SID 10155) has been added. I don't have access to the ex-NTL part of the network so can't see if this has been added to the Swansea / Port Talbot network but it does show up in the NIT for the following "internal" networks (indicating that it may not yet be live):

TTA Knowsley DMC (Hayes_RHE)
NGRHEE Knowsley
NGRHEE Bromley
TTA Bromley DMC (Bromley RHE)

Other changes over the last month:

Minor changes to service names for temporary rebrands, which Media Boy covers in great detail elsewhere.

Bay TV Liverpool (TS ID 101 SID 10152) became Made in Liverpool
Big Centre TV (TS ID 101 SID 10153) became Made in Birmingham.

Frequency changes took place in the Ashford, Croydon, Gateshead, Hayes and TTA Knowsley DMC (Hayes_RHE) networks, to clear an extended frequency block for DOCSIS 3.1.

This information is for the ex-Telewest, ex-C&W, ex Smallworld parts of the national network, ex-NTL (Langley) NIT data doesn't show up in the scan data.

It's not that straight forward. For one thing, most football enthusiasts will subscribe to both if they can afford it, and if they can't, BT Sports is attractive as they are cheaper than Sky Sports.

BT also give discounts to attract customers - and before discount is about half the cost of Sky Sports.

And if you have BT broadband then it is very cheap - and you get BT Sport 1 free.

In 2013 BT Sport had 2m customers and I think it's more than double that now. So safe to say "loads".
