'Few technical glitches' holding back two more channel launches on Virgin.
An Virgin viewer has told me today there's a few technical glitches Virgin Media need to sort out before launching two new channels (Rumoured to be FOX + and Disney Channel HD*) but they are coming and could be here as early as Thursday.

*Still waiting to get channel confirmed by insiders.

It's more a case of MB isn't usually around at the weekend to clarify these points, it's often easier to refer to his blog in his absence. The source of the rumours then becomes more obvious:

Testing on Virgin Media right now (Been confirmed by Asian Channel and two other viewers):

Disney HD
No doubt there will be much more to come, patience is a virtue. :D

Thursday is pencilled in for a launch. My guess is FOX+ and DisneyHD.
MGMHD has also popped up as a rumour to launch sometime in the Autumn.

RTE to launch UK Channel.

RTÉ plans to launch an RTÉ branded linear television channel – working title RTÉ Ireland. The channel will be made available free to air in the UK (England, Scotland and Wales) on Virgin Media.

It won't be the RTE channel as it appears in Ireland, it will be like BBC America, entirely seperate but showing mostly the same shows.

It's difficult to predict what it could show as RTÉ only has Irish rights to show most of their content. UK rights for most of their content is generally held by one of the UK broadcasters. There shouldn't be a problem with showing home grown Irish productions but that wouldn't be enough content for a fulltime channel. At a guess they could easily obtain rights for programmes they show, which UK broadcasters don't want.. Shortland Street springs to mind.

UK rights are considerably more expensive than Irish rights because of the relative sizes of the countries, so it could be quite expensive for them to start purchasing UK rights. And this is probably why the project keeps being shelved as too expensive.

Normally I would gloss over posts like this, but unless I am wrong, you went to Sky then came back to Virgin.

If I am correct, why ????

Virgin have given us quite a few channels this year, so can you please explain what you mean by "we have enough trouble getting other channels on VM"

or are you just ranting again ?

RTE not having enough programs? Please there is enough Rachel Allen Bake episodes to fill a channel so relax, joking aside this would be a good thing for the many Irish who live here who wish to access home grown programs like BBC world is to ex pat brits

If the idea actually gets off the ground, this is very good news. It would be nice to get other national TV stations from other English speaking countries as well, such as the US, Canada and Australia.

Rights issues are a real problem - we need a more flexible system! I'm sure it will come eventually (but whether it will be in my lifetime....possibly not).

If you want Fox News for the comedy then you really should be watching the Daily Show - they do a good job of picking out the funniest bits so you don't have to watch it 24/7.

Glad you stayed then !

I am sure Atlantic will be here one day, some people here see it as the holy grail of TV programming, but others see the channel as not as good as it once was.

I would like to know why we do not have it (the exact reason, not educated guesses), but we will never be privvy to that information.

Rumour: Media Boy been told the names of the two unknown channels that may launch on Virgin Media.

Can I take you back to August 29th when I posted on my blog.

Quote:

Also according to Asian Channel over on Digital Spy Forum the following channels are testing on Virgin Media:

Sky News Sports HD
Sky HQ Test (Sky News HD?)
An unknown test broadcast BT Sports 2 (HISTORY HD?)
An unknown test broadcast nothing (MGM HD?)
Disney HD
http://mediaboyblog.blogspot.co.uk/2...ls-set-to.html

I have today been told by an Virgin Viewer.

History HD and CI HD may launch soon on Virgin Media plus I was told Virgin are planning on bringing ALL the missing channels that UPC Ireland broadcast onto Virgin Media.

I have today been told by an Virgin Viewer.

History HD and CI HD may launch soon on Virgin Media plus I was told Virgin are planning on bringing ALL the missing channels that UPC Ireland broadcast onto Virgin Media.

We watch four of those five regularly in the M house, so they're good additions in my book. MB are these all possible launches this week?

The info on Sky News HD, Sky Sports News HD and Disney Channel HD testing in Virgin Media areas was from an post from Asian Channel 1st posted on August 28th on Digital Spy.

But I have been told by Virgin Viewers that both FOX + and Disney HD will appear soon on Virgin TV.

It now makes sense as to why MTV Classic wasn't added with the other Viacom channels, because I'm sure it's cheaper to port the channel over than it is to pay two bills, one for each company

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 4.

Interesting that the closure of Radio Caroline is mentioned, & Peter Moore's comments make interesting reading as regard to Sky's attitude to receiving channels without an EPG slot on their boxes. So much for Sky having an 'open' platform.

...we decided to take an Sky EPG (Electronic Programme Guide) but this did not give the expected increase in either listeners or advertisers and it was costing a fortune so we gave that up.

All we wanted to do was to revert to manual tuning as before. It was not known by us, nor our provider, that Sky had hardened their attitude to non EPG signals. We found that no Sky SD boxes would get our signal at all. Sky had nil interest in sending a software signal to make the boxes hear us. Then we found that each time they sent a general update to the HD boxes, this wiped the stored memory so that the listener had to go through the tuning process all over again and again....

I don't think it means they're just going to re broadcast the Ireland feed, just that they're going to aim for channel parity with UPC. It'll still be two deals and two bills, I'm sure. There would be rights issues otherwise.

Daft question, how do you know channels are being tested? Is it an facility that an non technical person or an lay observer can find or do you need a equipment?

If you have a DVB-C Compliant TV you can hook your Virgin Cable into it and they can show up that way, but it breaks Virgin T&Cs

Sadly unless vm have had a change of heart long wait on universal hd I'm afraid I was told in July they don't value it enough to obtain, total joke with all the new shows that are on/starting on it and that sd pq is one of the worst I've ever seen.thank god I can switch the sky box on and each in hd ;)

I sympathise if your pq is bad, but I don't know why you are experiencing this. We record a fair amount from Universal and the picture is fine. There may be differences between TVs but I wonder whether your signal is right. Might be worth raising it with VM to see if they can put it right.

Cheers bud, maybe its me just being a hd snob.to be honest I dont watch any of the sd channels they all look grainy to me anything i want to see on these channels I obtained hd versions by other means.some do look better than others and when I lve flicked it on its looked like one of the worse ones but that could be down to program thats on and how old I suppose

Isn't it about time they implemented a simple software drop to remove by option, standard def channels - can't stand hunting out the HD channel equivalents
