Hello all!

Been away in Dublin rather a lot during the summer (my Mum passed away in May) so lots to catch up on. Seen some changes to EPG this week but will look at the latest from MB for updates. Also quirky problem with box freezing at 01:00-ish but will have a search around for reports of this.

To those without audio on Eden HD...
Are you using Dolby or stereo?
What happens if you turn Audio Description on?

I had no sound on Eden HD. Turned Audio Description on and switched from Dolby to MPEG and the volume came back on. Still working 5 minutes ago, i'll just keep an eye on it and see how it goes.

 This is becoming more and more of a problem on HD channels. I've only noticed it over the past few weeks starting with ITV1 HD but Comedy Central is doing it too (well this morning it was)

It was this morning mate and was dreadful last night when i tried to watch Sean Lock Live last night...

The SD version on VM is not effected and is fine!

I'm not going to let this go as it makes the channel unwatchable IMO.

Its flagged as HD on Sky EPG not sure whether TIVO flags it as HD , usually on C5 it's HD if the DOG has HD after it , I can't say if this is the case with BB as I don't watch it :D , DF is your man here :D

clinteastman 07-10-2011 19:22

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.

If I remember rightly the reason some HD channels have audio sync problems is because the video stream takes a lot longer to encode than the audio stream, so the audio has to be delayed to get the timing right. That's the problem BBC HD had for a while (not getting the right delay) when it started.

Why don't you just SHUT UP and stop asking the same questions every flaming day, it's getting so boring, if you want more HD channels then there is a simple answer go and join SKY TV, maybe then we would get some piece and quite, and alow this thread to return to normal and let Media Boy do his work.

we could also get a lot of others channels in hd and a free month from virgin but until those with inside info or a statement from virginmedia is made it is pointless asking the same question time and time again.

it may be that a seperate deal needs to be done for on demand content and the channels. The only ones that know the real reason is the companies involved in the deal. may i politly suggest u contact the companies involved in any channel deals you wish to know about, start your own thread about it and stop cluttering up the "coming soon" thread with these type of questions.

well we can MM sky got a history of overcharging

why VM and bt win case about sky sports

why ofcom make sky lower price of sky movies

why woman in pub win batter about football on european channels

oh yes skys overcharging wasnt it

thats worse thing about sky is the overcharging and withholding Sky Sports 3+4HD when we paying premium HD charge

1 them overcharging
2 with holding sky sports3+4 HD

Surely one persons over charging is another man's fair price? It's up to Virgin to make their service more attractive to potential customers not Sky.

Viacom add Comedy Central HD (simply a HD version of a channel we already had in SD,) but to facilitate this remove two channels we no longer have access to in any form. This instead of taking extra capacity from what we would assume are a very close and important working partner. Meanwhile extra capacity was sought from Astra for the same channel meaning no removal of other services from the Sky platform.

CSC Media add their flagship "true entertaiment" channel. However to facilitate this have to remove their childrens offering from Virgin Media. Meanwhile when any CSC add channels to the sky epg they seek extra capacity from Astra.

CBS via Chello Media make a high profile attempt to join the UK market. They create two extra channels which quickly gain carriage on Astra, but now, two years since the channels were first announced, are no nearer appearing on Virgin Media.

BSkyB buy Virgin medias channel portfolio, part of the agreement is that Virgin will have long term access to Skys channels, and I rather foolishly thought this would also go for any new channel launches within a set time period also, however a matter of weeks later Sky launch a new flagship channel, which didn't, and hasn't since appeared on the VM Platform.

Premier Sports launch a new channel, which gains capacity on Astra with ease, but despite their insistence of continued efforts, get no nearer an agreement with capacity on the VM Platform.

Box Nation launch and seem confident of carriage from the off on both Astra and VM, even putting both platforms on their website... However, while the Astra capacity is not an issue, it all goes quiet on the VM front and all references to it are removed off the website.

Sony, a multinational corporation launch an english language channel in the UK... they, again, have little problem getting access to Astra and the Sky EPG, however despite their immense influence are unable to agree any carriage deal with VM.

PBS maker announcements of their intention to join the UK market with a new channel, which has already agreed carriage on Astra onto the Sky EPG, and are in discussion with VM. It doesn't take a genius to work out that if some of the worlds biggest media organisations can't agree anything for capacity with VM that PBS have very little chance of making it onto a platform that to all intents and purposes has been closed to newcomers for almost two years now. Even the recent addition of the +1 and HD channels was due to VM selling its stake in UKTV whilst inserting a clause for the carriage of the missing channels, and not an independent deal.

The evidence is just so huge it cannot be ignored, the problem has to lie with VM. And the sooner VM recognise this and try to address the problem, there is no chance of any new content being added to VM anytime soon, as I am sure they have very little else to sell in exchange for anything new.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.

or maybe VM simply has a policy right now of not adding any new non HD linear channels.

This topic is about what's coming soon to VM in terms of new Tv channels and whilst rumours are constantly doing the rounds, the only new channels in the last year have been Cinemoi, ITV1 +1 and the forthcoming return of two UKTV timeshift channels which were IIRC removed to make way for newly launched UKTV channels a couple of years ago.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.

Of course it is easy to get a EPG slot on Astra, the channels pay for it. To get carried on VM, THEY pay for it. The question they ask is will the revenue from commercials pay the price that the channel is asking or will people pay the subs.

The way I have always seem the situation is that VM are a company that supply broadband and phones services alongside TV. Sky supply TV and dabble in BB and Telephone.

If loads of extra channels are your thing get Sky. If you want a decent TV offering with good broadband get VM.

So can we get back on topic now ????

l think the fault lies with both of them as one will tell you one answer and the other will tell you another answer so l suspect the answer lies in the middle of that.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.

I know it's not an option for everybody, but in general it really is the case that Virgin and Sky should be seen as offering different solutions, each with different merits, rather than wondering why they're not the same. That might be frustrating for those who can't erect a dish, or for those who don't live in cabled areas, but that's unfortunately just the way it is. For those with a choice the options are simple-loads of linear channels, more of them in hd, and better value for money if you're into sports/movies or much better broadband, shed loads of on demand content and Tivo. All this "Sky have got this, why haven't we" stuff just completely misses the point.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.

Ive just moved from sky to virgin, sky have more channels and are cheaper, but virgin have the channels WE watch in hd, whats the point in 50+ hd channels if you dont watch them.
People need to choose between sky and virgin on what the provide. Sky internet is poor and for us thats just as important as a tv service. Best solution would be sky tv with virgin bb but then you would have no on demand as sky force you to have there sub standard internet service.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.

spot on Pau1200.

I appreciate that certain channels are important to certain people but even then, the majority will only watch the channels they want to watch whether in SD or HD.

I don't care if there are 30 or 500 HD channels on Virgin - I'll only watch the HD channels I normally would watch in SD.

I would expect BBC2 HD to launch after the Olympics so post August 2012, Autumn 2012 (September 1st to November 30th ) is the most likely time scale.

Not sure if package changes are appropriate for this thread but
Sky Arts 1, Sky Arts 2 (the SD versions) and Yesterday +1 have been added to the M+ tier.

I noticed the additions when I was messing about with the Set Favourite Channels menu last night and have confirmed the change on the Virgin Channel listing website where they are all now ticked in the M+ column. http://shop.virginmedia.com/digital-tv/channels.html
