Your issue is you seem to think Dolby Digital is 5.1 and 5.1 only, it's not.
Dolby digital is just AC-3 audio, and can be any number of channels up to 5.1. On some HD shows it will be 5.1, on others just 2.0. Both of these are STILL Dolby Digital. There is no point in time when a HD channel will not be broadcasting Dolby Digital audio.

That your amp isn't telling you it's Dolby Digital doesn't change the fact that it is.

Go to TV Guide press (9) for more then (5) for High definition and it is there. Seems strange though because it is in my TV Guide as normal.

Some people are trying to find it by going to the sports section in the TV guide, but it's not in there due to the way the VM epg works, at the moment a channel can only be in one category, so you'll only find the HD channels in the all channel and HD channel listings, as they can't be in both HD and sport for instance.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

I understood Dolby Digital was bringing your cinema experience to your home, and its at its best when used as a 5:1 system. And my amp does change instantly from Dolby Digital to pro logic or "stereo" on certain HD channels, so whether you are saying its not broadcasting a 5:1 signal on certain programs and thats why it changes, My point still being the sound is nowhere near as good as it should be, I thought HD was a 5:1 experience not 2 or 3.

zantarous 04-08-2009 16:40

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

The error is "You thought" ie you assumed. So you have several people tell you how it works. Believe it or not there was a time even DD 2.0 was used in the cinemas. DD 2.0 is way better then bog standard stereo that we have had to put up with on broadcast TV. It has far more fidelity.

No, the point of HD is that it can be 5.1 not that it is. But it must support Dolby AC-3.

For instance there is no point making a HD documentary in 5.1

It can only be a 5.1 experience on things that are produced with 5.1 sound though, and a huge amount of things aren't made in 5.1, simply because the cost of doing so is pointless as they don't need surround sound.

I noticed that too, makes it strange as to look up the ESPN channels you have to go to two different sections

But the sound is so much better

---------- Post added at 15:51 ---------- Previous post was at 15:47 ----------

I think we'll call it a day on this, I suppose I was just expecting everything to sound as good as a blu-ray by now on the V+, after 20 years ago of having the amp connected to the vhs in nicam stereo the sound has not improved as much as it should have.

The sound on Dolby Digital 2.0 is better than on an SD channel.

What you have to look at is what sort of programs actually benefit from surround sound, with most shows the picture that is infront of you is all there is going on, there's nothing going on behind you for you to be getting sound from, so you've only go sound coming from the front. With most TV it's like looking out of the window, you don't expect to look out the window and hear things going on behind you from things that you can see happening out the window do you? You just expect to be getting normal stereo sound.

It's pointless doing 5.1 sound just for the sake of 5.1 sound when it makes no sense in the context of the program.

I hate to be a killjoy - but could those wanting to discuss the merits and technicalities of Dolby Digital perhaps start another thread. I have just come home from work and had to plough through a couple of pages of discussion about Dolby (which doesent really interest me) in a thread about new channels comming to VM.

Obvioulsy I dont object to occasional questions and short discussions that are off topic but this one is getting a bit excessive.

Hey i have just asked virginmedia through twitter this :

devilincarnate0: @virginmedia have you got any plans to try and get the service of epix hd which seems that would suit your company and the customers ?

As this is a movie streaming via the net and also through cable but you need to have both to get the service and i got this reply :

virginmedia: @devilincarnate0 We certainly have plans to expand our HD offering, but due to confidentiality, we are unable to confirm deals until done.AA

I know that i have posted about this before but now epix hd have started to confirm deals and i know that one reply to my post earlier was that it seems to be a USA thing but they may be able to do it and then it would benefit the company and also the customers that have been wanting something like this for ages .

Someone stop me if iam going on a bit ?

the MLB game on last night looked like it was in HD and so did NASCAR now. there was loads more detail in the broadcast on ESPN HD especially in the MLB. all you need to do is switch back to ESPN to clearly see the difference.

if that was not HD last night then i a cant wait to see the true HD broadcasts as it looked as good as the stuff shown on BBC HD if not a little better.

Sky aren't going to want Living HD to be VM only. There could easily be a swapsy deal. 1 SKY HD channel for Living HD and the Obvious choice would be Sky1 HD.

Agreed.

Andrew, i don't think SS1 HD is a comparable channel to Living HD, hence why i think it will (if it happens) be Sky1 HD - it's almost like a like for like swap!

Also, i don't think it will be on any "Free package". I think it will be available on XL and maybe a stand alone channel on smaller packages.

The Simpsons is one of those shows that will hardly benefit from being in HD. Add to that it not being in HD on C4HD, and that Sky One has some great shows like Lost, 24, Bones etc., all which benefit from HD.

I would be delighted if one day VM manage to get Sky 1 HD, but obviously I'm not holding my breath.

Virgin should make it VM only just like sky have done with their channels and the way they have done contracts with other HD channels

Virgin get all the channels not owned by sky
then VM starts LIVING HD, VIRGIN HD, GOOD FOOD HD, BRAVO HD and then VM will have some power to get the sky channels.

It really doesn't matter what VM do. It will take Ofcom to force Sky to change and that isn't going to happen in a hurry, and probably not at all when Cameron is elected as a new Tory administration wouldn't want to mess with Uncle Rupert.

If that happened then it will go to the European court and Sky will get a far worse deal than ofcom would give them.

The European court would probably seperate the company into a content and platform division, and make sure that the content was freely available to all platforms for the same price as their own platform would pay. That's something ofcom has no desire to do, so it's in Sky's interests to eventually listen to the ofcom ruling (obviously after delaying it as long as is possible) because the other scenario for them is far far worse.

in a way even if it means another 3 years before we get sky stuff i would rather that happen, because in the end it will solv ethe problem in the long run anything sky develops will be avaible to all at te same price

but they also have to deal with sky and them paying large sums to keep stuff exculive to there platform too

I don't THINK we need Sky1 HD Media Boy (although i would rather like to watch the final series of LOST in HD) i just think that's a reasonable scenario... i'd rather have Eurosport HD myself... any news on that BTW?? :p

Virgin get all the channels not owned by sky
then VM starts LIVING HD, VIRGIN HD, GOOD FOOD HD, BRAVO HD and then VM will have some power to get the sky channels.

I don't think VM holding out from Sky is a good idea myself. Offering Living HD to Sky gives them a bit of leverage to ask for one of Sky's HD channels.

Also VM doing what they are accusing Sky of doing is not going to help re:Ofcom!

not if they are willing ot offer it to sky at easonable price, ther enothin wrong if they made it exculsive the point about sky is they amke them avaialble at uncommerical price

Yes a fair point but it's going to look like childish tit-for-tat.

If i were on VM board i would recoomend they offer Living HD for exchange OR at a reasonable rate - that would make Sky look even more money grabbing and unreasonable! lol...

The site now has a schedule available, although it's not yet linked to. It can be viewed here: http://www.espn.co.uk/schedule/ (Info was found by Nook29)

ESPN 2 is just an idea I have as ESPN has now got too much live sports at the weekend for the one Non America sport channel.

HD Channels on Virgin Media update:

I have been told to remove the information I has on my list on History HD and Eurosport HD.

When I get more info on any new channels - SD or HD - that are coming to Virgin Media I will let you know via this thread.

ESPN 2 would be a great way of broadcasting more live sport and showing repeats of previously shown live games. Setanta had two channels and showed a similar amount of sport, so I don't see why ESPN won't go for a second.

I think ESPN 2 will probably happen. After all, they are getting a lot of stuff right now and will probably get more before long and they won't have the room to show everything on a single channel.

I think getting ESPN 2 is a good idea, but don't forget the channel could come easy for ESPN, but trying to get it onto VM is like trying to build a house without the foundation, its hard.:)

isn't there a issue with getting EPG slots on Sky at the moment? Could ESPN Classic become ESPN2 over the weekends instead?

OR

ESPN can buy an EPG Channel from Setanta on Sky.
And Virgin can reuse Arsenal TV to broadcast ESPN 2.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

Well, I'm watching 4HD, Ugly Betty and for the first time ever, I have been amazed with a HD broadcast. The picture quality is absolutely stunning. People say "The picture looks like its coming out of the screen" and most of the time they are probably lying to justify an expensive TV purchase (Usually LCD) but really, the picture looks fricking real. Superb.

I have a plasma by the way, colour balance, richness, reality of image, second to none.

They re-brand ESPN Classic into ESPN 2 and show a mixture of live sport and classic games.

Surely they don't need a fulltime ESPN2 just for the weekend so they can simply just use the Classic on Saturday/Sunday and not go through the expense of buying another slot. Unless buying a slot from Setanta is not big $$$$

great news, a HD feed of both of eurosport's channels, i wish they would rename them tho to eurosport 1, eurosport 2, eurosport 1 hd, eurosport 2 hd. British Eurosport and Eurosport 2 makes no sense, that implies that there is a eurosport 1 by giving eurosport 2 it's name.

REALLY hope virgin can add both of the eurosport channels soon, i like to watch tennis and swimming on eurosport, it would be great in HD.

That what was reported that he said. We don't know what he actually said. But even if he did say it, it still doesn't make it an announcement.

The quarterly results come out later today. That is a report you can trust.

Media Boy UK 06-08-2009 09:36

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

Virgin Media's TV Results are out:

Virgin added 20,400 new TV customers.

During the quarter, Virgin added 56,600 V+ DVR subscribers to reach an installed base of 668,500. This represents a penetration level of just 19% of their digital subscribers which leaves significant further up-sell opportunities.

Quote:

We have announced the launch of six new HD channels from Channel 4, ESPN, LIVING, FX, MTV and National Geographic. These will be available for free to all subscribers of our top basic TV tier "XL" with our V+ DVR and Channel 4 HD will be available to all digital TV subscribers along with BBC HD. We plan to launch more HD channels with a focus on content which most benefits from being shown in HD. In addition, recent proposals from Ofcom, the UK telecoms and media regulator, would enable us to offer our customers certain Sky Sports HD and Sky Movies HD channels, which BSkyB would be obliged to provide at a regulated wholesale price. The detail of this proposal is now under consultation.
